This elegant design by Caroline Palmer gives a

fresh, natural look to a cushion you can make as

a Christmas treat and use all the year round

    C

    ombining different colours and

    techniques, Caroline has created a

magnificent design. Caroline tells us a little

about how the design came about, I liked the

purity and simplicity of the white Christmas rose

for this design, which also allowed me to

concentrate on their lovely elegant shapes and

pretty centres, which Ive made richer and more

luxurious with gold threads and beads. I hopethis will become a classic Christmas favourite to

brighten the home for many winters.

Qualityshines out from every stitch of this design with gold beads in the flowercentres complementing the exquisite botanical flower representations

    Meet the designer...Caroline Palmer

Ive contributed two chapters to a new David

& Charles book. Its in the shops now and its

called Cross Stitch Countryside Collection. My

two designs are Bluebell Woods, which

features an inviting, winding path runningthrough pretty green woods, and Summer

Skies, which shows a cheerful picnic beneath

a sky filled with colourful hot air balloons.

Both designs were inspired by the lovely

    Somerset countryside.

Stitching the designThe fabric size given in the shopping list for the

cushion is enough for the back and front, so first

you need to cut it in half to make two pieces

16x16in (41x41cm). Put one piece aside to use

later for the back and bind the edges of the other

piece to stop them from fraying whilst you are

stitching. You can do this with a machine zigzag

stitch or by folding masking tape around the edges.

The cards and the cushion designs are all

worked in the same way. Fold the fabric in half

both ways to find the centre, as this is the best

place to start stitching. The design is worked in full

cross stitch so although there are several colour

changes of similar shades you will find it grows

quickly. Work all the cross stitch first using two

strands of stranded cotton over two threads ofthe linen fabric.

Adding the detailsWhen you have completed all the cross stitch you

can add the details and embellishments. The

to make upThese extra charts make perfect cards for any

occasion, with the beads sparkling beautifully

Make a Christmas rose cardWork the cross stitch using two strands of cotton

over two threads of the linen. Add the backstitch

and beads, then mount using the guide on page 70.

Binding cord tipTwisted cord can unravelquite easily so you must

bind both ends. To do this

    wrap matching sewing

    thread tightly around the

end and work a few small

    stitches through the cord

    to secure it.

Get twisted cord fromPartridge and Pear TreeThis luxurious twisted cord comes from Partridge and Pear Tree.

They sell a range of fabrics and Wendy Cushing trimmings,

including the 10mm cord in bottle green and old gold, which

comes from the Vienna Collection, ref 39893-08. Call % 01769

574976 or visit the website at www.partridgeandpeartree.com.

backstitch is all worked in one strand: very dark

    green for the leaf and stem outline and details;

brown for the flowers outlines and details and gold

    for the flower centre details.

For a wonderful three-dimensional quality to

your design, add beads for the flower centres.

These are gold seed beads and are attached using

matching thread with a half cross stitch on top of

the already worked cross stitch. Refer to the chart

for the exact positions of the beads.

Making up the cushion1. Cut your stitched linen to 15x15in (17x29cm)

    with the design placed centrally.

    2. Cut the other square of linen you put aside

earlier into two pieces 8x16in (20x41cm)

    3. Insert the zip between the two cushion backpieces along the longer edges. Undo the zip a

    little way.

    4. Place the cushion front and back right sides

together and stitch all the way round.

    5. Hand stitch the braid all round the edge using

small neat stitches and binding the ends to stop

    them fraying

    6. Turn the cushion cover right sides out, press and

insert the cushion pad to finish.
