IntroductionPenn Law’s curriculum is cross-disciplinary at every level. In our own classrooms and in the ability to engage in course content throughout the University, we offer our students exposure to other disciplines, enhancing their critical thinking and enabling them to participate at the highest level in the important issues, legal and other, of our time.

Our faculty, interested in examining legal issues from a broad array of perspectives, bring their educational backgrounds and intellectual interests to infuse their courses with ideas and analyses from other disciplines. Members of the faculty develop courses, seminars, and clinics that draw together multiple fi elds and co-teach courses with faculty from other schools and departments in the University. Our physical proximity to the University’s other renowned departments and schools also provides a tremendous advantage when bringing together faculty and students to explore contemporary issues.

Students interested in more formal immersion in another discipline have the opportunity to take classes elsewhere in the University’s esteemed graduate and professional schools. At some point in their Penn Law careers, close to 60% of our students do so either by gaining approval to register in classes at other schools or by taking classes taught at Penn Law by faculty from other Penn departments.

At the next level, Penn Law students also have the opportunity to pursue one of our certifi cate or joint-degree programs with other schools and departments at the University of Pennsylvania. These programs have proven immensely popular and successful. For example, 25% of the Class of 2009 received a Certifi cate of Study in Business and Public Policy at the Wharton School.

All of these paths allow Penn Law students – and students from throughout the University – the opportunity to integrate knowledge from different disciplines and professional perspectives. Penn Law’s interactive, cross-disciplinary curriculum instills in our students a deep and diverse understanding of the legal issues they will face as professionals.

If you have questions about a specifi c joint degree, please e-mail us at [email protected].

Within the three-year JD program, students have the opportunity to earn a Certifi cate of Study in one of several disciplines. Typically, these programs require that the students take three or four courses in the granting department and one or two courses from a prescribed topic area at the Law School. There are no admissions requirements: all students who successfully complete the requirements are granted the Certifi cate. Students who complete a Certifi cate will be charged a nominal administrative fee.

Environmental StudiesEnvironmental Policy in the Environmental Studies InstituteEnvironmental Science in the Environmental Studies InstituteStudents interested in environmental studies can take either of these two Certifi cates, with the Policy Certifi cate intended for those studying issues in environmental regulation and the Science Certifi cate for those who would like to keep current their hard science background in the environmental fi eld. Students take fi ve courses approved by Environmental Studies, with up to two of these possible at Penn Law.

Middle East and Islamic Studies/Middle East Center (MEC)Certifi cate of Study in Middle East and Islamic StudiesThis program allows students to delve into contemporary research on the modern Middle East or study the area’s ancient and medieval languages and civilizations. Students interested in this Certifi cate must successfully complete four courses in the general area of Middle East and Islamic Studies. Three of these courses are taken in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GAS) and must be primarily related to the study of Middle Eastern or Islamic societies. The fourth course is taken at Penn Law and will ordinarily include a component involving Islam or the Middle East, but may be in the area of International Law.

School of Social Policy & PracticeCertifi cate in Non-Profi t/NGO LeadershipStudents who aspire to utilize the law as a tool for social change, and who hope to lead such change through non-profi t organizations or NGOs can participate in an exceptional interdisciplinary course of study that includes exploring diffi cult social problems with students from other schools to generate innovative solutions that can transform communities. This program offers an opportunity to enhance leadership skills and to foster collaboration between disciplines that can well supplement your legal education. The Certifi cate requires a total of fi ve courses: three from the School of Social Policy & Practice and two from the Law School.

School of Social Policy & PracticeCertifi cate of Study in Cross-Sector InnovationStudents interested in the management and/or creation of non-profi t or non-governmental organizations in their long-term professional goals will learn about leadership, cross-sector collaboration, organizational structures, and social movements. The certifi cate requires a total of fi ve courses: three courses taken in the School of Social Policy & Practice’s Non-Profi t/NGO Leadership program and two at Penn Law. As part of the certifi cate program, students may earn a Leading Social Change Fellowship.

As one of the world’s greatest research institutions, the University of Pennsylvania is home to an array of superb graduate and professional schools. These schools sit together on the University’s campus, and all are engaged in the integration of knowledge across disciplines.

Each year, our students build on their law degrees with complementary degrees in one of these fi ne graduate or professional schools. Penn Law has formal joint- or dual-degree programs that are available to students.

Students seek admission to the other program independent of the JD application and, in most cases, can apply to that second program either contemporaneously with their application to Penn Law or while in their 1L or 2L year. Because Penn Law and the sister school grant credit for a certain number of the other school’s courses, students typically save one year by doing both programs concurrently. Students who choose to pursue a joint degree will appreciate a signifi cant opportunity cost benefi t by reducing the length of their studies, sometimes by as much as a full year. Students should note that there will be corresponding fi nancial costs – an administrative fee for all joint degree students, and tuition charges where the second program requires more than the four courses for which students can receive Law credit.

JD/MA/MS CriminologyDepartment of Criminology

Students in this program earn either a combined JD/MA or JD/MS degree, based on which program in Criminology best suits their interests and expectations. The program is a cross-disciplinary dual degree program that is unique in the Ivy League, combining the historical tradition and legal scholarship of Penn Law with the longest continuous program of research and teaching of criminology of any American university. It produces future lawyers who are not only well versed in the law and legal tradition, but who also possess a robust understanding of social science and the use of evidence-based approaches.

Students can earn both degrees in three years. Penn Law gives credit for four approved courses in Criminology toward the JD. The Criminology Department requires the student complete eight courses, including – depending on the program – two or three courses from the Law School curriculum.

Students must apply and gain admission separately to each department. Applications to the Criminology Program are welcomed contemporaneously with the Law School application or during the 1L or 2L year. The LSAT is suffi cient for both departments; no additional testing is required.

Here is a typical track for completing the program.

“The interdisciplinary focus at Penn is genuine, not lip-service,and since I am interested in the way in which many areas of study interact

with law, I wanted to be at a school where I could bene t from students and faculty who were already thinking that way.”

JD/MESInstitute for Environmental Studies

The aim of the JD/Masters in Environmental Studies program is to train leaders who can blend the professional concerns of law and environmental studies. Graduates acquire valuable tools for understanding the interplay between environmental issues and the law at the local, state, national, and international levels. Students in this program are prepared to assume positions of leadership in environmental law and policymaking in both the public and private sector.

Students can earn both degrees in three years. Penn Law gives credit for four relevant courses in Environmental Studies toward the JD degree. MES students complete twelve courses from a list approved annually by the Institute; these include the four courses that will be counted toward the completion of the JD degree, and may include additional Law School courses.

Students apply separately to each department. Applications to the MES program are welcomed contemporaneously with the Law School application or during the 1L year. The LSAT is suffi cient for both departments; no additional testing is required.

JD/AM Islamic StudiesDepartment of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations

The JD/AM in Islamic Studies prepares students to engage in high level decision making in policy and law. The degree, which requires fl uency in Arabic, allows its graduates to develop new tools and strategies applicable to fostering cooperation and understanding between diverse legal and fi nancial systems and cultures, as well as to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration in research, planning, and policymaking.

Students can earn both degrees in four years. Penn Law gives credit for four approved courses at the School of Arts and Sciences toward the JD degree. The AM curriculum requires students to have or attain fl uency in Arabic and complete the AM coursework, which can include courses taken toward the completion of the JD.

Students apply separately to each department. Applications to the AM program are welcomed contemporaneously with the Law School application or during the 1L year. The LSAT is suffi cient for both departments; no additional testing is required.

JD/MAJoint Degree in Global Business Law

The Joint Degree in Global Business Law (JD/MA) program is sponsored jointly by the Université de Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne Law School (Paris 1) and the Institut d’Études Politiques (Sciences Po). The program allows Penn Law students to graduate with both the JD and French Master degrees after spending their 3L year studying in Paris.

The JD/MA is a multi-disciplinary program that provides a small number of lawyers and students with an in-depth theoretical and practical acquaintance with the nature and needs of the global market by synthesizing law and political science.

Penn Law JD/MA participants typically study in Paris after having already fi nished two years of legal study in Philadelphia. Upon successful completion of their year in Paris, and assuming prior satisfaction of all Penn Law-related requirements, students receive both a JD and the French Master.* Successful completion of the program provides participants with the academic training required to take the bar exam in a U.S. jurisdiction. While it also provides an academic credential suffi cient to qualify graduates to take the bar examination in France, they would realistically need substantial additional preparation before doing so.

JD students apply to the JD/MA program during their 2L year and must receive formal approval from the Penn Law Offi ce of International Programs. They then apply for acceptance to Paris 1/Sciences Po, which gives preference to students with a working knowledge of French. To be eligible to apply to the JD/MA program, JD students must have taken the required 1L program and, in their 2L year, be on their way to completing a minimum of 31 of the 55 upper-level semester hours required for graduation.

In Paris 1/Science Po (where some classes are taught only in English, others only in French), students take a prescribed course series, including General Introduction to Law, Contracts, Torts & Restitution, Corporations and Agencies, International Trade, Antitrust and Competition, International Contracts, and WTO Litigation. Students are also required to take two optional courses from a list of electives. Students should note that the program’s academic calendar differs in some respects from Penn’s.

Once at Penn Law, students will be invited to information sessions provided by the Offi ce of Graduate and International Programs to learn more about this program and the application process.

JD/PhDDepartment of Philosophy

The JD/PhD Program is designed to train the next generation of legal philosophers, who will teach legal and political philosophy in law schools, philosophy departments, departments of government, specialized graduate and undergraduate jurisprudence programs, and legal studies departments.

Students in this program have the opportunity to earn a combined JD/PhD in a condensed time frame while complementing their studies in each fi eld with knowledge and research in the other.

Students can earn both degrees in six years. Penn Law gives credit for up to six approved courses in the Department of Philosophy toward the JD. The Philosophy Department requires that students complete all PhD coursework, which may include several courses from the Law School curriculum.

Students must apply and gain admission separately to each department. Applications to the Department of Philosophy are welcomed contemporaneously with the Law School application and vice versa.

Most often, students spend their fi rst two years in the Department of Philosophy and their third year at the Law School completing the traditional 1L curriculum. The next two years are spent in combined coursework in the two departments, followed by dissertation writing. On occasion, for the exceptional candidate, some other arrangement of coursework may be possible.

Graduates who obtain academic positions following their completion of both degrees receive full funding for their work at the University. The Philosophy Department offers accepted candidates support through teaching fellowships and other support, and the Law School provides a loan to students for Law tuition, forgivable upon the acceptance of qualifying academic employment.

Students interested in this program should contact the Penn Law Admissions Offi ce as early as possible in the application process. We will evaluate your candidacy for this program and, as appropriate, connect students with faculty in your areas of interest.
