Michigan State won 42-28. BY THE DAILY NEWS TRAVERSE CITY — Mason Coun- ty Central’s Zac Benham and Chase Barnett finished one-two on Satur- day to pace their Spartans boys cross country team to a second- place finish behind division-one Plymouth Salem in the 12-team Traverse City Central Invitational. The Spartans girls team also took second with Leta Larsen running in eighth place. The Central gals were also topped by a division-one school, Traverse City Central. “It was a beautiful day,” said Spartans coach Ed Sanders. “But the course was a tough one. It has a very steep hill that the runners have to climb twice during the race, once just before the first mile and then again after the second mile. It made the times probably about 30 seconds slower than they might have been.” Benham finished the course in 16 minutes and 35 seconds. Bar- nett, just getting back into action after an injury, took 17:06. “This is the first time all season that we have had our full team run together,” added Sanders. “We are still not fully healthy, however.” “Zac was strong as he always is,” said Sanders. “Chase had a very good kick at the end. Drew Griffis had an outstanding run, also.” BOYS TOP FIVE TEAM RESULTS: 1-Plymouth Salem 30. 2-Mason County Central 53. 3-Big Rapids 99. 4-Traverse City Central 100.5-Grand Rapids Union 105. Eddie Lacy rushed for 120 yards to fuel the Packers’ first road win of the season. Green Bay (3-2) took a 16-3 lead into the fourth quarter and was up 19-10 with 4 minutes left, but the Ra- vens (3-3) kept coming back. Rodgers went 17 for 32 for 315 yards. Spartans defend home turf against Indiana EAST LANSING (AP) — Michi- gan State has already improved in one respect since last season — the Spartans finally won a con- ference game at home. That’s more than they could say in 2012. Michigan State recovered from an early defensive breakdown Saturday, beating Indiana 42- 28 in the 500th game at Spar- tan Stadium. Jeremy Langford scored four touchdowns in the homecoming victory, which left the Spartans as one of only three teams that are unbeaten in Big Ten play. Penn State beats No. 18 Michigan 43-40 in 4OT STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Bill Belton ran for a 2-yard touchdown in the fourth over- time to lift Penn State past No. 18 Michigan 43-40 in maybe the biggest win in coach Bill O’Brien’s two seasons with the Nittany Lions.

TRAVERSE CITY — Mason Coun-ty Central’s Zac Benham and Chase Barnett finished one-two on Satur-day to pace their Spartans boys cross country team to a second-place finish behind division-one Plymouth Salem in the 12-team Traverse City Central Invitational.

The Spartans girls team also took second with Leta Larsen running in eighth place. The Central gals were also topped by a division-one school, Traverse City Central.

“It was a beautiful day,” said Spartans coach Ed Sanders. “But the course was a tough one. It has a very steep hill that the runners have to climb twice during the race, once just before the first mile and then again after the second

mile. It made the times probably about 30 seconds slower than they might have been.”

Benham finished the course in 16 minutes and 35 seconds. Bar-nett, just getting back into action after an injury, took 17:06.

“This is the first time all season that we have had our full team run together,” added Sanders. “We are still not fully healthy, however.”

“Zac was strong as he always is,” said Sanders. “Chase had a very good kick at the end. Drew Griffis had an outstanding run, also.”

BOYS TOP FIVE TEAM RESULTS: 1-Plymouth Salem 30. 2-Mason County Central 53. 3-Big Rapids 99. 4-Traverse City Central 100.5-Grand Rapids Union 105.

“Our top four girls ran well once again,” said Sanders of his Spartans girls squad. “And Jessica Allen ran a strong race to get our fifth spot.”

BALTIMORE (AP) — Aaron Rod-gers threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Jordy Nelson, Mason Crosby kicked four field goals and the Green Bay Packers held on to beat the Baltimore Ravens 19-17 on Sunday.

Eddie Lacy rushed for 120 yards to fuel the Packers’ first road win of the season. Green Bay (3-2) took a 16-3 lead into the fourth quarter and was up 19-10 with 4 minutes left, but the Ra-vens (3-3) kept coming back.

Rodgers went 17 for 32 for 315 yards.

Spartans defend home turf against Indiana

EAST LANSING (AP) — Michi-gan State has already improved in one respect since last season

— the Spartans finally won a con-ference game at home.

That’s more than they could say in 2012.

Michigan State recovered from an early defensive breakdown Saturday, beating Indiana 42-28 in the 500th game at Spar-tan Stadium. Jeremy Langford scored four touchdowns in the homecoming victory, which left the Spartans as one of only three teams that are unbeaten in Big Ten play.

Penn State beats No. 18 Michigan 43-40 in 4OT

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Bill Belton ran for a 2-yard touchdown in the fourth over-time to lift Penn State past No. 18 Michigan 43-40 in maybe the biggest win in coach Bill O’Brien’s two seasons with the Nittany Lions.
