PASTORAL LETTER Dear Readers, The editor has decided to run a special issue of Cross Country during the Coronavirus crisis. Most of us are engaged in social distancing and for many that means isolation, which can be painful, nerve – wracking and itself a cause of anxiety. Below is an extract of a letter from our diocesan Bishop, Robert, which might be a source of encouragement and strengthening in this difficult time. It is addressed initially to the clergy, but much of it is applicable to the wider Christian community. ‘For many who live in the South-West, no matter the headlines and no matter what the Government says, it all feels rather unreal, like a ‘phoney war’. The sun is shining, Spring is all around us, and the vast majority of us are not witnessing the devastation that this virus can and will cause. But we need only to look at Italy and Spain, or now London, Kent and Hertfordshire to hear the heartfelt pleas from NHS staff and relatives to do all we can to stop this virus escalating out of control, and to stay home. We have this one window of opportunity to slow down the transmission of this virus. Thank you for all you are doing in so many different ways…It is what you are doing locally in terms of … helping people to pray in their anxiety, and reaching out to the fearful and sick, that all speaks so powerfully of the love of Christ crucified. “Nails were not enough to hold God-and-Man nailed and fastened to the cross, had not love held him there.” Catherine of Siena “Lord Jesus Christ, may your body, outstretched upon the wood of the cross, give wings to my soul, which is often weighed down, and make it rise up to you.” Isaac of Nineveh

Please be assured of my prayers for you as together we endeavour to serve our communities and be faithful to Christ… + Robert

GOSPEL READING AND HOMILY FOR MAY 3rd Cited from the Living Word worship resource published by Redemptorist Press

Gospel John 10:1-10 HOMILY “I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture.” (John 10:9) Moira was a city dweller. But for one summer her job took her to the heart of the countryside, to live and work in a rented cottage that overlooked sheep fields. Her woolly neighbours were endlessly fascinating, and Moira often found herself looking up from her work and becoming absorbed in their antics. She liked to take a walk in the light evenings, and often ended up leaning on a gate in a country lane, watching the sheep. She found it particularly interesting to think of the Bible stories about sheep. In her diary she wrote: “Sheep often behave exactly as their stereotype suggests. They follow one another, unthinking, into the most terrible scrapes. They fall over. They get stuck in hedges, or push their way through the hedges and wander into the road. They are, from my observation at least, foolish, a bit grubby and rather vulnerable. When the Bible, or hymns, suggest that sheep need protection, a townie like myself might assume that they need protection from predators or thieves. My conclusion, from the time I have spent watching them, is that sheep need protection most of all from themselves.” The biblical images of shepherds paint them as people of wisdom, care, comfort, reliability, fortitude, sacrifice and protection. In the psalms, the Lord, as the shepherd, protects the flock, carries sheep and lambs, feeds and waters them, gathers them into the fold and fends off anything and anyone that could harm them. In the Gospel parable, it is the shepherd who searches for a single lost sheep, leaving ninety-nine to find it, who lays it across his shoulders and carries it home. Jesus tells this parable relying on his hearers knowing that this is how a shepherd would behave. 3

Page 6: CROSS COUNTRY MAGAZINE · SOME INSPIRATIONAL POETRY . R. S. Thomas writes mainly about the rural people of his native Wales and some critics suggest his style reflects its harsh and

The image of Christ the Good Shepherd is one to ponder, to meditate on, to sing about. Many people, reflecting on the recent or distant past, will acknowledge a sense of God’s gentle presence, of being carried through difficult circumstances, or healed and soothed. We have been guided and protected, even in the most difficult times. And when we have behaved foolishly, wandered off and got ourselves stuck in a tricky situation, God has gently guided us back to the right path. Jesus then presents himself as the “gate”, the one who both liberates the sheep to find fresh pasture and also encloses and protects them. The Gospel presents us with a challenge, especially when set alongside the other readings. We might reflect on how we have been vulnerable, lost or foolish from time to time in life, and how Christ has called us home. But we ought also to acknowledge those times when we have been called to be shepherds rather than sheep. If Christ is the pattern for our life, then surely, as he is the Good Shepherd, we might strive to be shepherds too. We can be shepherds, caring for others. This means deliberately

having a care for those in real danger in our world, having compassion for people who are fearful about life for whatever reason, and being kind to all in need, without limit. We might also be gates, called to offer the liberation of Christ to others. Our words and our deeds can give others a sense of being led to find “pasture”, nourishing

their spirit and giving life in abundance. We might be encouragers, the openers of eyes and hearts and minds, as well as protectors and people who offer warmth, welcome and safety. We do this because we believe that God, in Christ, cares for us and has done so throughout our life. We believe that God, in Christ, is our liberation, our life in abundance. We might also acknowledge those people who, practically and literally, have guided us, cared for us, encouraged us, nourished our souls, healed us and protected us. People who have, like shepherds, looked out for us. We have been cared for, we are cared for, and so, in turn, we care. We are Christ’s sheep. But we are also co-shepherds – called to care for those who are vulnerable and offer guidance, that all may dwell safely in the fold. 4

SOME INSPIRATIONAL POETRY

R. S. Thomas writes mainly about the rural people of his native Wales and some critics suggest his style reflects its harsh and rugged terrain. James F. Knapp of Twentieth Century Literature comments "the poetic world which emerges from the verse of R. S. Thomas is a world of lonely Welsh farms and of the farmers who endure the harshness of their hill country. The vision is realistic and merciless." Thomas's poems are ultimately life-affirming. "What I'm after,” explains Thomas, "is to demonstrate that man is spiritual." I have seen the sun break through to illuminate a small field for a while, and gone my way and forgotten it. But that was the pearl of great price, the one field that had treasure in it. I realise now that I must give all that I have to possess it.

Life is not hurrying on to a receding future, nor hankering after an imagined past. It is the turning aside like Moses to the miracle of the lit bush, to a brightness that seemed as transitory as your youth once, but is the eternity that awaits you.

CANCELLATIONS As you know all church services and social events are either cancelled or postponed until further notice. Coldridge have postponed the Village Fete until next year and Nigel Fidock writes ‘I anticipate that the next main event will be The Harvest Festival. We will be especially thankful for the Harvest and our farmers and suppliers working long hours to keep the community and the nation fed.

Village activities have also been suspended. The planned Skittles Evening on 27thMarch was cancelled, but will hopefully be rearranged for the autumn. The Village hall’s Annual Summer Fayre is/was planned for Saturday 6th June. If this should go ahead, then it will probably be a hastily put together event and will need support from all the village to put into action.

Hildegard of Bingen: a German Benedictine abbess. Her dates are 1098 – 17

September 1179. She was a writer, composer, philosopher, Christian mystic, visionary, and polymath. She is one of the best-known composers of sacred medieval music as well as the most-recorded in modern history. She has been considered by many in Europe to be the founder of scientific natural history in Germany. This poem, written hundreds of years before the homily on earlier pages, reflects the same feeling and offers similar challenges.

God’s soul is the wind rustling plants and leaves, the dew dancing on the grass the rainy breezes making everything grow. Just like this, the kindness of a person flows, touching those dragging burdens of longing. We should be a breeze helping the homeless, dew comforting those who are depressed, the cool, misty air refreshing the exhausted, and with God’s teaching we have got to feed the hungry: this is how we share God’s soul.

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK 10 – 16 MAY This week usually sees many of us organizing fund raising events. Sadly, due to the Coronavirus Pandemic we shall not be able to support in the normal way... In these very difficult and trying times we need to remember those who have no homes to be shut into, those with no clean water to drink at the turn of a tap and those who

have no food to stockpile. The message from Christian Aid is … Even in the darkest moments, love gives hope. Love compels us to fight against coronavirus alongside our sisters and brothers living in poverty. Love compels us to stand together in prayer with our neighbours near and far. Love compels us to give and act as one. It would be a loving act to set aside a sum designated for Christian Aid to be donated in a manner appropriate to our current situation. Do, please, support if it is at all possible for you to do so. 9

WALKERS … WITH OR WITHOUT A DOG Some thoughts for you too, written by Macrina Wiederkehr My morning stroll has taken me further than I had intended. Sauntering up the hill, wading through the autumn leaves, I breathe in the crisp morning air. It is just dawn. Standing still for a moment, I see the first rays of sunlight shimmering through a silver maple tree. It is truly a moment of wonder, resplendent with light. I stand gazing as one in the midst of a vision. Suddenly I am uncertain whether those golden arms swaying in the morning sunlight are tree branches or angel wings. Such shining I find overpowering … I have never been one to limit God to the Scriptures, though the Scriptures have nourished me well. My god is not imprisoned anywhere, nor in the Bible not the tabernacle. Real Presence is everywhere, and those with the hearts of children revel in it. So much that I do not blush to call divine is revealed to me each day. The Word and the Bread! That’s all there is. They continue becoming flesh. A crumb at a time.

A RECIPE FROM SUSTAINABLE CREDITON Rhubarb and Meringue

Instead of a pie or crumble, try rhubarb with meringue 500g (1 lb) rhubarb cut into bite sized chunks a slice of lemon 50 – 75g (2 – 3 oz) sugar 2 large egg whites 100gm [4oz] caster sugar Cook the rhubarb gently with the ordinary sugar and lemon. When tender place in a pie dish and allow to cool. Make the meringue by whisking the egg whites and gradually adding the caster sugar. Continue whisking until the mixture is firm. Spoon on top of the rhubarb and sprinkle with a little more sugar. Bake in a moderate oven until the meringue is crisp, and a pale golden colour. This is good with Devonshire cream custard made from the 2 egg yolks, vanilla extract, 250 ml (1/2 pint) milk, 25g (1 oz) sugar and a teaspoon cornflour. Whisk the egg yolks together with the sugar, cornflour and vanilla extract. Pour on the boiled milk – stirring well. Return to the saucepan and bring to the boil stirring thoroughly. Remove from the heat and finish with a couple of tablespoons of double cream. Paul Cleave 11

A MESSAGE OF HOPE One day People will touch and talk perhaps easily, and loving be natural as breathing, and warm as sunlight; and people will untie themselves, as string is unknotted, unfold and yawn and stretch and spread their fingers; unfurl, uncurl, like seaweed returns to the sea. And work will be simple and swift Like a seagull flying; And the clocks will stop, and no-one will wonder or care or notice, And people will smile without reason, Even in the winter, Even in the rain. ASJ Tessimond

SOME PRAYERS Lord, steady our feet when the world tries to rock and shake our faith. When materialism beckons with coy hands, steady our feet. When fear tugs at our kneed, steady our faith. Show us your goodness, and steady our hearts in You. Amen God help us to change. To change ourselves and to change our world. To know the need for it. To deal with the pain of it. To feel the joy of it. To undertake the journey without understanding the destination. The art of gentle revolution. M. Leunig

FOR ROGATION God our Father, you never cease the work you have begun and prosper with your blessing all human labour: make us wise and faithful stewards of your gifts that we may serve the common good, maintain the fabric of our world and seek that justice where all may share the good things you pour upon us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen Almighty God, whose will it is that the earth and the sea should bear fruit in due season: bless the labours of those who work on land and sea, grant us a good harvest and the grace always to rejoice in your fatherly care; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. 13

DEVON HISTORIC CHURCHES DAY 2019

This is a belated but extremely warm thank you to all our 35 Cadbury Deanery Churches for your fantastic performance last year in aid of the maintenance Devon’s wonderful churches.

You came 1st out of all 22 Devon Deaneries, by a huge margin of £2414.34. You raised £6494.34, of which ‘a one off’ £3000.00 came from an unbelievably generous donor, who wanted to support our churches. Had it not been for this large contribution, we would still have come a very respectable 2nd. In the last four years we have come, 3rd in 2016; 1st in 2017; 2nd in 2018; and 1st in 2019. This from our churches, both large and often very small. So all you do is enormously appreciated by the DHCT and also by me, your Deanery Representative. With very best wishes and fingers tightly crossed for 2020!! Christopher
