BROTHERSHIP STRENGTH COURAGE INTEGRITY

Saline Men’s XC 2007 Season Summary

The 800 mark of the Jackson Invite, which was

two days after the grueling “Oliverio” workout.

For Saline Cross Country, the season begins the Wednesday following the team banquet. That is when the team meets to plan for the following year and the runners commit to running hundreds of miles. Fresh off a historic performance at the State Finals, this year‟s meeting had a tone which had not been heard in Saline since the days of Dustin Voss and Neil Atzinger. In 2007, the team would not be aiming for a “top ten” finish in the state finals, as is tradition. Instead, after reviewing the returning runners from around the state and Saline‟s potential, the runners decided to make a bold set of goals: 1

st in the State

1st in the “Legion”

All runners PR by Jambo #1 “Build a Bridge” between Varsity and JV More committed team

Finishing in the top three of the state finals seemed almost a given, but winning the state meet meant beating Pinckney, which had a returning team that would earn them a national ranking before they had ran a single race. Regardless of the seemingly impossible odds, the runners agreed on the audacious goal of unseating the most talented returning team seen in many years. And so it began…

Summer Conditioning

The 2007 track season saw some amazing results from Saline‟s distance crew; several runners under 10:30 in the 3200, four runners at 4:31 or better in the 1600, and the third fastest 4x800 in school history. This was evidence that the winter training was paying off, and after a reappearnce at Nationals, the summer training began.

Despite a smaller team, thirty to forty runners showed up on a regular basis to prepare for the season. They ran 400‟s, 800‟s, 1000‟s, 1200‟s, and miles at vDot, fast, quick, and tempo pace; they ran to and through Brecon, People‟s, Wilderness, Mill Pond, and Curtis Parks; they did circuits, 4-minute abs, Sherer Strength, and 10:00 with the captains. All of this for a set of team and individual goals that most outsiders considered impossible, even after the great track season.

All of this hard work was balanced with fun and relaxation. After each workout, the runners indulged in gatorade, slush, Butterfingers, Starbursts, and Flav-Or-Ice. They would then flock to the bowling alley for borrowed shoes and free games. On Saturday‟s, they met for Ultimate Frisbee and ice cream at Mickey‟s, and on one occasion, Pinckney came for a series of great games.

Leadership & Team Camp

The Senior Leadership Trip has been a staple of Saline Cross Country. It cements the bonds that bind a class, and for 2007, that leadership trip would include a tour of the Midwest. The runners hung out with Olympic distance runner Tim Broe at the USAT&F Nationals in Indianapolis. The next morning, the runners visited the home of Carmel XC, a high school program that has consistently produced some of the nation‟s top high school distance runners. The runners then headed south to Mammoth Cave, and then back north to Chicago. The trips to Hancock Tour and Navy Pier were interesting, but the purpose of the trip was not sightseeing. Saline Cross Country Alumnus Joe Hart and Sam Bender accompanied the runners as chaperones and helped the runners realize the great task that they were undertaking. The class of 2007 had no shortage of leadership ability, but they also faced several massive challenges. How would the team look after combining the Varsity and Reserve teams? Would the loss of many runners because of the

new time limits negatively affect the team dynamic? How would the runners handle the pressure of so much potential? All of those questions were asked and discussed over a week‟s time. The answers would come during the season, but what was obvious then was that the seniors of 2007 were ready to face any challenge. In July, the XC parents and athletes loaded up the cars, vans, and pickups and trucked out to Warren Dunes State Park in western Michigan for a four day team camp. The athletes rose in the morning to a run, and then ran again in the evenings. Workouts included dunes, trails, and rainy black top parking lots. On their own, the seniors demonstrated their leadership and set the tone. They would demand commitment to the team ideals of integrity, hard work, and faith in the team goals while welcoming a new group of comrades. With the “last hurrah” over, they returned to Saline with only a few days remaining before the start of the season.

Annual Five-Mile Time Trial

In early August, one of the most promising teams in the nation met in the high school commons. That team was Saline Cross Country, and fifty-seven young men were determined to become part of that group. The guidelines were set then, and whether new or returning, the runners learned that expectations were high for all athletes, not just the top groups. There was no more “Junior Varsity” cross country for Saline and all runners were joining a Varsity team which was contending for a State Championship. Not all of those present had what it would take, but those that remained by mid-October would take the program to new heights. First though, there were steady-state miles and time trials…

The Time Trials The two major time trials of 2007, the three mile and five mile, would be shocking contrasts of each other. The three mile time trial, ran on the campus of Saline Middle School, saw a virtual rewriting of history as the runners posted seven of the fastest times in the history of Campus Loop. Even more telling, for the first time since 2001, the team had no runners over 26:00! It was clear that the entire team was responding to the high expectations that filled nearly every conversation. Compared to the success of

the three-mile, the five-mile was a miserable failure. No one cracked the top-ten list, most of the runners

missed a turn and were lost on the course, and all of the runners had a tough time in the heat and hills of the historic home of the five-mile trial. The difficulties were put aside and the runners celebrated as the five-mile jersey was passed on to Blake Johnson.

Saline Men’s XC 2007 Season Summary

JohnsonBl & Conn at Jambo #2

SEC Jamborees

Jambo #1: On the tough Rolling Hills course, Saline took control of the race and the red division of the SEC by scoring one less point than Pioneer. The race was too close for comfort, but it helped the new runners understand the impressive strength of the SEC. The reserve race saw a reversal of fortunes, and the race ended with a

“big purple mark” on the reserve team‟s win-loss record. Robin Green, Chris Dunn, and Andrew Barnett each managed top-ten finishes, but the excitement of the day was the huge PR‟s from Mark Pressler and Jack Ritchey. The day ended with neither the Reserve nor the Varsity being completely pleased with the overall performance. With that, the team went about preparing themselves for the next level of competition.

Jambo #2: On their home course, Saline would produce a dominate performance. Led by individual winner Blake Johnson, Saline easily outdistanced all other teams. Even more impressive, Saline‟s top four runners made history, each landing on the all-time top ten list for Saline

runners at Mill Pond Park. Fresh off a win at Ypsilanti, where the reserve team beat ten other varsity teams, Saline‟s runners had a new boost of confidence. For the first mile, it looked like Pioneer was in charge of the race, but after just one trip up Toboggan Hill, the entire race changed. Eventually, Senior Adam Swenson would take the individual win, while seven of the top-ten spots went to Swenson‟s teammates. The “big purple mark” had been erased by a gutsy home-course performance!

Jamboree #3: Wind, rain, heat and the return of Pioneer‟s #1 runner were meaningless to Saline as they marched towards an undefeated SEC Season. For the first time since 2003, Saline celebrated team and individual championships in the SEC. Even more exciting, the boys would share their excitement with the girls‟ team, which had matched the boys‟ individual and team win. Tommy Hunt earned his second All-

Conference award, while Brian Conn earned his first. Brian Hernandez earned 2nd Team All-Conference recognition as the 8th finisher in the race. In a rematch of Reserve teams, Pioneer and Saline would again face off. Robin Green led the way for Saline this time, finishing 2nd overall. His efforts were supported by another dominate performance, as Saline took 4 of the top 10 places in the nine-team race. Again, Mark Pressler would have an excellent day as measured by the fact that he was the only Saline runner to PR in the tough conditions.

Invitationals

For years, Saline has sought out the most competitive invitationals, and in 2007, that would remain true. The only difference was that this year, Saline‟s attendance is what made an invitational competitive. Instead of lining up next to great teams, other teams were lining up next to a great team from Saline. It was a change, but the idea remained the same; To be the best, you have to race against the best. At the Michigan State Invite, the most competitive early-season meet in Michigan, Saline finished 3rd of twenty-three teams in the elite division, while Blake Johnson posted the fastest time of any D1 runner. With solid performances from all of the top seven,

Saline had earned a varsity trophy for the first time in several years. Saline‟s reserve team competed in the Holly Invite, and running a “second string,” the Hornets finished roughly in the middle of a very competitive field. Despite a terrible course, it was a successful outing for the Hornets as almost every runner earned a significant PR, including Townsend‟s one-shoed 1:25 improvement!

At Jackson, it was the first of many great days for Saline Cross Country. The boys finished second, but closer than ever before to Pinckney, while the girls‟ team took top honors with a narrow victory over Brighton. At Ypsilanti, the Varsity A was forced to run without the help of most of the top 7 athletes. Despite the loss of those athletes, Saline was the class of the field, beating two teams that would go on to win their Regional Championships! In the reserve race, it was nearly a perfect sweep, with Saline runners taking 2nd thru 10th! At Portage, the runners faced oppressing heat and long delays, but the race eventually went off. Again, Saline was in a very competitive field, and again, they would close the gap on Pinckney. It was another one of many “runner-up” performances for Saline, but one that allowed them to see what would be necessary to win a State Championship. The final invite was Gabriel Richard, where Saline would finish ahead of Dexter and just behind Pinckney, but only because Saline had held back their top runners for the first mile. The Varsity B ran well enough to finish 8th of 15 varsity teams, again demonstrating the amazing depth of Saline Cross Country.

The Post-Season

Tradition dictates that the weather is terrible for the Regional Championships, and 2007 kept that tradition alive. The larger challenge facing the runners was the two Ann Arbor schools, both of which featured strong teams that could come up to beat Saline. At the gun, Johnson charged to second place. Too far back from Heck and too far ahead of Woodhaven‟s #1, he would remain in that spot the entire race, finishing 20 seconds behind the favorite for the individual state championship. Not far back was Conn, running in a small pack that, after the mile, quickly began to dissolve. Conn moved to the front and began mowing down other runners and stringing out those that tried to hold on. Hunt and Hernandez found themselves stuck in traffic early on, and were not out quite as expected. With no other options, they began moving through the pack together. Finally, the 5-6-7 runners, which had nearly been our undoing in the conference meet, were moving forward and in far better position than we had seen just a week earlier. From that group of three, Harper and

Filipsson would separate, and eventually Filipsson would take control and finish 19th in 16:54.

Saline Men’s XC 2007 Season Summary

The “Big Four” after the Regional Championship

The race looked good, but it was obviously going to be close between Saline and Pioneer. “Results” poured in from spectators and newsmen, each reporting a different outcome. The final scores would be settled in a meeting between the coaches at the results pavilion. There Coach Spina, and shortly thereafter the runners, learned that Saline had finished two points behind a team they had beaten all year. The runners met on the traditional hill, and the disappointment of the loss was quickly overcome by the realization that they were still in the hunt for a State Championship. On a small hill alongside the course, where the team has met for three years to discuss disappointment, expectations, and success, the runners resolved to keep fixed on the grandest prize.

All-Region: Blake Johnson 2nd, Brian Conn 5th, Brian Hernandez 10th, Tommy Hunt 12th

With Saline in box 3 and Pinckney in box 29, the two best teams in the State Finals were separated by the remainder of the field. In the end, those two teams would make it a duel between them for the championship, but for now, 5,000 meters separated the runners from the finish line. At the gun, Saline executed a perfect start that put the runners at the front edge of the race, allowing them room to move. At 800 meters, the runners were all running well. At 1.5 miles, the race had changed. While Johnson was sitting on the lead pack and Conn was running in 30th place, Saline‟s #3 and 4 looked to be in trouble. Hunt was showing the tell-tale signs of too early discomfort, while Hernandez was struggling behind him. Further back, Filipsson was moving aggressively through the crowded field, often relying on hockey skills to push his way through crowds of runners. Lipa and Harper looked to be out well, but mid-race, it was obvious they were in trouble. Past two miles, Johnson had moved to the front of the race and made sure no one would be settling for a fast kick, while Conn was holding his ground near 30th spot. Hunt had pulled himself back into the race and over the last 800 meters he would close the gap on Conn. While not moving up, Hernandez was not fading back, holding his spot in the seventies. Filipsson continued to pass runners and was now just behind Hernandez, whom he would overtake in the last 600. Lipa would salvage a great last mile, but was too far behind to help with scoring. In the last 100, it was an all-out battle. The top three runners pulled away from Johnson, but he held on to a fourth place finish, and third in the team race. Conn fought off a huge pack to pick up one of the last All-State spots and finished just under 16:00. Hunt was just ten seconds behind, finishing in a nine second PR, but just out of All-State range. Filipsson

Saline Men’s XC 2007 Season Summary

continued to pass at every opportunity, while Hernandez mustered a massive kick that would put him and the Swede side-by-side in the finish chute. After the race, nothing was obvious except that it would be a close battle. While Pioneer had dominated the early stages, the runners each could recall passing their runners in the final stages of the race. Pinckney looked strong in the top spots, but their 3, 4, and 5 runners blended into the field. Saline had a solid race, but finish places were nearly impossible to know. Filled with the emotions and sensations of a great effort, the runners headed off to put closure on the season while their finish place would remain a mystery… Several hours later, Brian Hernandez and Blake Johnson happily hoisted the wooden trophy overhead. Saline‟s team had turned a huge field that included an “unbeatable” team from Pinckney into a dual meet that was too close to call by any cross country veteran. The final results had the Hornets down by just 17 points, but well ahead of every other team in the field.

Saline Men’s XC 2007 Season Summary

SO WHAT MAKES A CHAMPION?

Many athletes grace the fields of high school, collegiate, Olympic, and professional sports but

only a select few will ever rise above all the rest of their competitors to become champions. Few will have what it takes to persevere through adversity and to handle the privilege of victory in order to become champions. Few will give that little bit extra just when they think they have nothing left, just when they think they are about to break to become champions. It is said that heroes are made every day when average men are faced with challenges or trials and respond in heroic ways. Heroes aren‟t born, they are made. So it is with champions! So what does it take to be a champion? It takes vision. A man must set his sights on a goal and work toward it always keeping it in his mind even when it is far away. A man must be able to dream and not let himself be put into a box by others or by his current situation. It takes believing. A man must believe in himself even when no

one else does, even when the goal seems unattainable he must always BELIEVE. A man must have friends who believe in him as well and who encourage him on the way to his goals. It takes hard work and perseverance. No great goal can be attained in an instant or with little effort. Life is not at all like a lottery. A true champion must work hard every day. He must put in the time and energy when he feels good and when he feels bad. And, he must be patient enough to be willing to wait for his goals to be attained. It takes discipline. Every man who would be a champion must first discipline himself in small things. He must discipline his body as well as his mind and spirit. The world is full of over-talented underachievers who have the gifts but lack discipline. It takes character. No man who lacks character can ever be a true champion. He may find himself in the limelight at some time but soon he will stumble and may cause more scandal than he caused honor for himself and for his sport. A life without character is like a fine mansion built upon sand. For all the fine things put into it, even if it is made of the strongest materials, when the storms come it will have no foundation and will crumble to the ground.
