Seeding is underway in many parts of the province this week, with seven per cent of the 2020 crop now in the ground. This is just below the five-year average (2015-2019) of nine per cent for this time of year. A slow start to spring has delayed field operations in areas of the province, but most producers have indicated they will be out in the field within the next few weeks as fields dry up and soil temperatures rise. The southeast region of the province is the most advanced with 10 per cent of the crop in the ground. There is nine per cent seeded in the southwest, seven per cent seeded in the west- central, two per cent seeded in the east-central and northwest regions and less than one per cent seeded in the northeast. Rainfall was reported this past week throughout the province, particularly in the southeast and east-central regions. The Indian Head area received the highest amount at 37 mm. Eleven per cent of the field peas, 10 per cent of the chickpeas and durum, nine per cent of the lentils and oats, four per cent of the spring wheat and two per cent of the canola have been seeded to date. Winter wheat assessments are continuing as fields green up and temperatures rise. Cropland topsoil moisture is rated as seven per cent surplus, 81 per cent adequate, 11 per cent short and one per cent very short. Hay and pasture land topsoil moisture is rated as two per cent surplus, 77 per cent adequate, 19 per cent short and two per cent very short. Farmers are busy getting ready for seeding, combining last year’s crop, spraying, applying fertilizers, harrowing and seeding in some areas. One year ago Seeding was underway for many producers, with 13 per cent of the crop seeded. Cool weather had delayed field operations across much of the province, but many more producers expected to be in the field in the coming week. Southeastern Saskatchewan: Crop District 1 – Carnduff, Estevan, Redvers, Moosomin and Kipling areas Crop District 2 – Weyburn, Milestone, Moose Jaw, Regina and Qu’Appelle areas Crop District 3ASE – Radville, Minton and Lake Alma areas

Some producers in the region have been able to start seeding. Ten per cent of the crop is now seeded, which is below the five-year average (2015-2019) of 12 per cent for this time of year. Producers in some parts of the region are still waiting for their land to dry up before they can start seeding. Twenty-four per cent of the field peas, 14 per cent of the lentils, 10 per cent of the durum, nine per cent of the barley, eight per cent of the oats and six per cent of the spring wheat has been seeded to date. There has been scattered rain showers throughout the region, with some farmers reporting hail and snow flurries. The Indian Head area received the highest amount of rain at 37 mm. The Lampman and Kisbey areas reported five mm, the Moosomin, Whitewood and Broadview areas six mm, the Wilcox area 16 mm and the Odessa area 29 mm. Rain showers and cool weather throughout the week have slowed down field work in some parts of the region. Grass is greening up in some areas and spring winter wheat assessments continue. Cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 15 per cent surplus, 75 per cent adequate, nine per cent short and one per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as four per cent surplus, 74 per cent adequate, 19 per cent short and three per cent very short. Farmers have been busy applying herbicides, combining the remaining 2019 crop and getting ready or starting seeding in some areas. Southwestern Saskatchewan:

Crop District 3ASW – Coronach, Assiniboia and Ogema areas Crop District 3AN – Gravelbourg, Mossbank, Mortlach and Central Butte areas Crop District 3B – Kyle, Swift Current, Shaunavon and Ponteix areas Crop District 4 – Consul, Maple Creek and Leader areas

Nine per cent of the crop is now seeded, which is behind the five-year average (2015-2019) of 17 per cent for this time of year. In some areas fields are still wet, but most producers have been able to start field work such as spraying, harrowing, rock picking and harvesting the 2019 crop. Ten per cent of the durum, barley and field peas, eight per cent of the canola and lentils, seven per cent of the spring wheat and five per cent of the mustard has been seeded to date. Most the of region received a small amount precipitation, which was welcome, especially with the drying winds that occurred over the past week. The Vanguard area received the highest amount of parcipitation at 14 mm. The Bengough and Big Beaver areas received

12 mm, the Mortlach, Eyebrow and Gull Lake areas eight mm and the Hazenmore, Cabri and Tyner areas six mm. Grass is turning green and some producers have been able to move their cattle into pasture or plan to soon. There are reports that some fields have winterkill damage in their fall seeded crops. Cropland topsoil moisture is rated as five per cent surplus, 82 per cent adequate and 13 per cent short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 80 per cent adequate, 19 per cent short and one per cent very short. Farmers have been busy combining the 2019 crop, applying herbicides, fixing fences, harrowing and seeding. East-Central Saskatchewan:

Crop District 5 – Melville, Yorkton, Cupar, Kamsack, Foam Lake, Preeceville and Kelvington areas

Crop District 6A – Lumsden, Craik, Watrous and Clavet areas Cool temperatures in the region have prevented seeding from beginning in most areas. Currently two per cent of seeding is completed in the region, which is on track with the five-year average (2015-2019) of two per cent for this time of year. Most of the crop that has been seeded is field peas, as well as some spring wheat and lentils. Farmers have been able to continue harvesting the 2019 crop and start field work such as harrowing and applying fertilizer, while others are waiting for their fields to dry. Farmers have indicated that moisture levels are good for seeding and fields have been drying. The Rocanville area received the most rain this week at 26 mm. The Foam Lake area received 14 mm, the Earl Grey and Holdfast areas nine mm, the Raymore area seven mm and the Elfros area six mm. There is some weed emergence in the region. It is still too early to estimate the condition of winter cereals in areas where they were able to be seeded last fall. Cropland topsoil moisture is rated as four per cent surplus, 79 per cent adequate and 17 per cent short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as one per cent surplus, 70 per cent adequate, 26 per cent short and three per cent very short. Farmers have been busy getting machinery ready, harrowing, applying fertilizer, combining last year’s crop and, in some areas, starting seeding.
