About Ysgol Craig y Don
Ysgol Craig y Don is a community, co-educational primary school in Llandudno, a beautiful coastal town resort known as the “Queen of the Welsh resorts”. The school, on its current site, was established in 1977 and prides itself on the high standards of teaching and learning attained by pupils and staff.
We aim to provide vibrant and relevant learning experiences which will equip each of our pupils for any challenge that the future brings.
Ysgol Craig y Don is a Language Category C Bilingual school and our aim is to provide between 25% and 50% of the learning experiences through the medium of Welsh. Welsh is the everyday language of the school.
Our mission statement is “Enabling all to thrive and blossom as successful and complete individuals.” We aim to deliver this within a happy, secure and stimulating learning environment, where the contributions and energy of all members of our school community are welcomed and appreciated.

Parent Information – Statement of General Aims
The aim of the school is to provide our pupils with a learning environment in which each individual will feel known and valued for what he/she brings to us. We should see him/her not only as a pupil in school but as a member of the community of the school and of the larger community beyond.
We must also remember that he/she is a member of a family and that much of what he/she does in school is influenced by his/her life outside school. With this in mind, we set ourselves he aim of working closely with parents.
The main aim of the school is to create a pleasant learning environment – one which will enlarge the pupil’ knowledge, experience and imaginative understanding and lead to an awareness of moral values.
To this end, we try to look at the child in the whole and endeavour to ensure that for each individual pupil, the time spent at Ysgol Craig y Don will be an enjoyable experience – one which enhances his/her physical, mental, social and emotional development.
When the time comes for pupils to leave our school, they should have had a firm educational foundation upon which to attain their full potential and, in time, become active participants and confident contributors to an ever changing society.
At Ysgol Craig y Don the aim is to try to ensure that the education provided enhances the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of each pupil and that the nature of the complete curriculum is varied, expansive and balanced. In order to fulfil these needs the class organisation will at times be flexible.

Schoolcomms – The School Communication System
Schoolcomms is a system that allows a school to communicate with parents (those classed as Priority Number 1 on the pupil’s data record on the school’s SIMS computer) by e-mail, text and Apple/Android App Message.
This means that Ysgol Craig y Don can communicate easily with parents helping to reduce school administration time, costs and improve parent/school relations. It is also possible for parents to text/e-mail the school. The number to text the school via Schoolcomms is 01492233018. However, please ensure you telephone the school with urgent messages.

Parents can access the school Calendar via the website. The calendar is updated

days, PE days, fruit club arrangements and an overview of activities for the academic
year. The Gallery Sections contain photographs of children undertaking school activities
(provided parents have consented to this) and examples of their work.

Parent Information - Admissions
All School Admissions are handled by the Admissions Officer at the Education Department in Conwy County Borough Council. Contact 01492 575592. Further details are also available on the CCBC website.
Ysgol Craig y Don has a predefined catchment area – available on our website.
New Nursery Intake
Children start school on a part-time basis in the Nursery class in the September following their 3rd birthday and will attend full time school in the Reception class in the September following their 4th birthday.
Forms are available from the School Office at the beginning of November for the following Academic Year and must be returned normally before 18th December to ensure that your child is considered for a place in the school.
Following a formal offer of a place in Ysgol Craig y Don, parents will be invited along to a Parents Evening in the July before their child/ren start school in the Nursery Class in the September.
At this meeting, they will be advised whether their child has been allocated a morning or afternoon session and given the dates of the staggered entry during their child’s first two weeks in school.
Parents and their child/ren will also be invited to the Nursery New Intake Teddy Bear’s picnic which will take place in the week following the Parents evening mentioned above.
Reception Class
Please note that acceptance to the Nursery class will not guarantee admission to the Reception class; parents need to apply formally for a place in the Reception Class (full time). Forms will automatically be given to those children already attending our Nursery Class. Forms for new children wishing to start Reception Class in September will be available from the School Office from the end of October prior to the children starting Reception the following September.

Parent Information – School Uniform
We are lucky that parents make such a great effort for their children to look smart in their school uniforms. Clothing our children has become such an expensive business and we want to help parents/guardians ensure that the uniform they have purchased comes home at the end of each school day in good order. Therefore, we ask you very kindly please, please to put your child’s name on the labels inside their clothes using permanent marker. Names on labels solves so many problems. GENERAL UNIFORM

- Your child must bring a towel and waterproof coat.
- Please ensure that any long hair is tied back.
- No jewelry should be worn including earrings. Goggles are not necessary as children are encouraged to swim without them. No shampoo/shower gel is needed.

Parent Information – The School Day & Teaching Hours
The school hours are as follows –

Breakfast Club
There is no charge for Breakfast Club as this is a Welsh Government initiative. Children must arrive between 8.20am and 8.40am. It is not possible for children arriving later than this to enter Breakfast Club.
Cereal with milk, toast, fruit and juice or water is available.

Infants MUST be signed in by a parent/carer – Junior pupils are not allowed to sign in younger siblings who are in the Infants Department (Nursery to Year 2)

The Chasebell After School Club is a private business set up within the school grounds. Sessions are as follows.

Parent Information – Attendance & Punctuality
Good attendance is essential in order that pupils can make good progress and reach their full potential. There is clear evidence that good attendance and punctuality go hand in hand with educational progress and attainment. We know that on the whole, our families here at Ysgol Craig y Don make every effort to ensure that their children attend school regularly and punctually.
Absences due to illness are understandable and cannot be avoided but please make every effort to ensure that your child attends school regularly.
In the case of your child’s absence from school, contact the school on the first morning of the absence informing us of the nature of the absence and the likely duration.

Our daily monitoring of the school’s attendance figures is a very useful tool for us in many ways. We can recognize patterns of absences and lateness, we can check if pupils are absent without reason and this monitoring enhances our child protection procedures. For example, if a child is absent in the morning without a message from a parent or guardian, then that is a cause for concern because we do not know where that child is. Therefore, every time your child is absent from school, you must contact the school and leave a message with a member of staff in the office or on the answering system by 9.30am. If we do not receive a message then we will contact you by text message asking for an explanation why your child is absent. If we do not receive a reply from the text message, we will telephone the contacts listed on the child’s records.
Our attendance figures are monitored by the Authority’s Education Social Work Service. Any regular patterns of absence or lateness, or if a child’s attendance dropped beneath 85%, are picked up by them and queried with us.
If you bring your child to school late, as is occasionally inevitable, please report to reception and your child will be registered there.

Punctuality is also essential as lateness has a negative impact on a child’s learning and the rest of the class as a whole.
We monitor attendance and punctuality very carefully and will liaise with Conwy’s Education Welfare Services if a pattern of absences or lateness causes concern. Parents/guardians must bring late children to school via the main reception.
Leave of Absence form/Holidays. We encourage everyone to organise family holidays during school holidays. A list of school holiday dates is available on the Conwy County Borough Council website at www.conwy.gov.uk however please consult the Calendar on our school website to check Training Day dates.

Parent Information – School Morning & Afternoon Procedures
It is vital for the safety of pupils, staff and other adults that we all adhere to the following arrangements for bringing pupils to school in the morning and collecting them at the end of the day.
Pocket Money/Valuables - It is recommended that pupils do not bring any money to school other than that which is needed for a specific purpose. In such cases, pupils are asked to give the money or other valuables including mobile phones to the class teacher for safe keeping in order to avoid complaints concerning losses from pockets, trays, desks etc. The school can not accept any responsibility for lost property.
Arriving in the Morning
We have staff on duty on the school premises from 8.50am. Only pupils who are registered with and actually attend the school’s Breakfast Club will be supervised before this time. The gate at the junior end of the school will be open for pupils to attend Breakfast Club from 8.15am. Any other pupil must wait until 8.50am.
The gate to the infants yard will be opened at 8.15am. Again, pupils will be supervised by school staff from 8.50am only.
Once the gates are locked, late arrivals, both juniors and infants, should arrive via the main reception entrance. There will be no access for pupils to the school via reception before 9.00am.
At the end of the school day – Infants
Infant pupils finish school at 3.00pm. Parents/Guardians of pupils in Infant classes can gain access onto the infant playground area via the gate at the infant end of the school. Please do not gather at the door and windows of the classes. Teachers and pupils require the time at the end of the lesson to reflect upon the learning of the day. It is very distracting for them if people are peering through the windows or talking loudly immediately outside the class. We appreciate your patience and co-operation in this matter.
Parents/Guardians will be able to receive their children from the infant staff outside their classrooms. Once Parents/Guardians have collected their children from the infant classes they should then leave the school premises via the gate at the infant end of the building. This is very important.
The school grounds are an extension of the classrooms and are important teaching areas. Parents/Guardians with infant pupils must not remain on the premises between 3.00pm and 3.30pm in order to wait for children who are in junior classes to finish school.

We ask very kindly that you adhere to this arrangement as it is a matter of child protection and health and safety. It is also extremely distracting for pupils and teachers who are still in lessons (in classes and on the yard/school field) until 3.30pm.
At the end of the school day – Juniors
The gate at the junior end of the school will remain locked until 3.30pm. We ask you very kindly not to gather around the gate onto the pavement at the end of the day. Please keep the area around the gate clear to enable pupils to exit the school grounds safely. Avoid obstructing the pavements with bikes and scooters etc. Please do not feel offended if you are asked to move to clear the gate area. Junior pupils are old enough to make their way to the gate on Clarence Drive and meet their Parents/Guardians there. Older siblings, parents and guardians should wait at the gate and not walk down the ramp to the school grounds as this causes congestion which makes it difficult and potentially dangerous for our pupils to leave the school via this route. It also makes it more difficult for staff on duty to monitor and supervise the pupils. Parents/guardians will be asked, politely to remain at the gate to collect their children.
We kindly ask that you avoid causing an obstruction on the pavement immediately outside the gate.
Visitors
Any visitors to the school must report to reception immediately upon arrival. If you wish to meet your child’s teacher, you must come to reception in the first instance. Your request will be dealt with by the receptionist.

Parent Information – School Meals & Healthy Schools
The school meals, cooked and served in the School Canteen, follow our healthy eating food project guidelines. The present cost is £2.10 per day for Infants and £2.15 per day for Juniors.
Copies of the menu are available from Reception or on our website.
Dinner money should be paid in advance on a Monday morning for the week. Please place the dinner money in an envelope marked with your child’s name and class. School Meals can also be paid in advance on a termly basis. Cheques should be made payable to Conwy County Borough Council please.
Dinner Money Arrears
Any dinner money arrears which remain unpaid, are taken by the local authority from the school’s budget. This is money that is lost to the school which should go towards paying for educational resources for all pupils.
This means to the school, two weeks dinner money for a pupil in Key Stage 2 amounts to £21. This money soon adds up and, unfortunately, there have been incidents of outstanding amounts of money remaining unpaid over several months. This is unacceptable.
Therefore, having sought advice from the Local Authority, any parents who have two weeks outstanding payments for school dinners will have to provide a packed lunch for their child until the arrears are paid in full. We have to be strict with this policy. Any parent who has incurred unpaid dinner money arrears who then sends their child to school without a packed lunch will be telephoned by the Headteacher and reported to the Education Social Worker if deemed necessary.
Thank you to all those parents who do always pay for the dinner their children receive at school promptly every week.
Free School Meals
Application forms are available from Reception.
Packed Lunches
Pupils may bring their own sandwiches to school but parent are asked to follow the school’s healthy eating policy, as what the children eat may affect their concentration, behaviour and learning potential during the afternoon. All drinks must be in a leak proof plastic container. Hot drinks/food are not allowed. Glass bottles are not permitted.
Healthy Schools

Ysgol Craig y Don is a healthy school and we run initiatives that raise children’s awareness of the nutritional value of food.
The Eco-Council organise a fruit club for the Juniors (Years 3 to 6). Pupils take responsibility for purchasing their own fruit during morning breaks.
Snacks in the form of fruit only are permitted. No sweets are allowed in school.
The BOBS scheme is run in conjunction with the school cook for Year 5 pupils and children get a chance to cook good food in the school kitchens.
Year 6 pupils also have the opportunity to partake in a 6 week afterschool Cookery Club run by the school cook.
The school encourages children to use active forms of transport to school such as walking and cycling. The school has covered cycle parking and offer various cycle/scooter training.

Parent Information – Security – Health & Safety
Illnesses / accidents at school
We have qualified First Aiders and Emergency First Aiders in school.
Please ensure that school is notified in writing of any health/medical/allergy details. It is extremely important that this information is up to date and that we have current emergency contact details. During September, parents/guardians receive their child’s PLASC details which include medical information – parents should ensure that they check and amend this information and return the form to school as soon as possible.
Illness. If a child is unwell at school, First Aiders will be consulted and if deemed necessary, we will contact those listed on the child’s contact details. This will be by telephone and/or text message using the Schoolcomms system (text messages can only be sent to contact details set as Priority number 1 on the Schoolcomms communication system).
Injury. Any minor cuts/bruises will be treated by our First Aiders and an explanation slip will be sent home with the child. If a child receives any type of head injury, it is our policy to contact the parents/carers of the child and ask them to visit the child so that they can decide if the child needs to see a medical practitioner. An explanation slip will also be provided. If it is suspected that a child may have a more serious injury such as a broken bone, the child’s parents/carers will be contacted. The Headteacher (or Deputy) and First Aiders will decide whether the child needs urgent hospital treatment. In this case, the Headteacher (or Deputy) and another member of staff will take the child to Llandudno Hospital. In the rare event of a medical emergency, an ambulance will be called.
Administering Medication
Teachers are not permitted to administer medication. In most cases, parents are expected to visit school to administer any medication for example, at lunch time. Please contact the Headteacher if you have any questions.
If your child has a particular medical issue e.g. needs an epi-pen due to an allergy or diabetes, an Individual Health Plan/Action Plan will be in place for your child. Any medicines/equipment needed in an emergency will be kept in a lockable medicine cabinet in school.

Pupil Safety
Every child must remain on the school premises at all times.
PARKING OUTSIDE SCHOOL – parents must adhere to the parking restrictions outside school.
Pupils arriving and leaving school routines – morning and afternoon.
Please see the Pupils arriving and leaving school routines in previous section. It is vital for the safety of pupils, staff and other adults that we all adhere to these arrangements.
Staff Car Park
The blue main school gates will be closed from 9am. They will be re-opened at lunchtime and then closed until 3.30pm. Delivery vans should not enter the staff car park during school hours.
Visitors
Any visitors to the school must report to reception immediately upon arrival and sign-in.
Where possible, maintenance work is carried outside school hours.
If a parent wishes to meet their child’s teacher, they must do so via the school reception – their request will be dealt with by the receptionist.
Parents are not allowed to enter the school during school hours unsupervised.
The doors leading from Reception to the School are locked.
CCTV
The school has CCTV cameras covering the outside area of the school as well as one camera in the ‘link’ area outside reception.

Parent Information – Complaints Procedure
The school recognises that, despite best efforts, people may sometimes wish to raise
complaints.
The school has a procedure for handling complaints which is outlined in the Complaints
Policy. This procedure sets out the steps that will be taken to ensure complaints are
properly investigated and dealt with in a timely manner.
If you wish to make a complaint you should, in the first instance, make an appointment
with the Headteacher to discuss the matter. If this does not resolve the issue, the next
steps are defined in the school’s Complaints Policy available on the school’s website or
on request from the school.

Teaching & Learning - Curriculum
In accordance with the requirements of the Education Act 1986, the Education Authority has formed, and intends to review regularly, a written statement of policy regarding the secular curriculum. The requirements of the National Curriculum will be interpreted in the light of the Authority’s present policies and philosophy.
Quoted below are the introduction and general aims of the statement as seen in the Education Authority’s document:
Introduction
The aim of an education system is to create situations and provide resources that will enable each child to develop a full personality, to develop and exercise all his or her abilities, to provide for the pupil in accordance with his/her age, ability and aptitude, so that he/she is able to become a responsible member of a bilingual society, able to contribute to that society and benefit from it, and to live in peace and fraternity with fellow men.
There are three inter-related aspects to the general statements, i.e. the need:
to enable each child to develop his/her full potential. to ensure that each child is introduced to his/her Welsh heritage. to give an opportunity for each child to develop as a full member of a rapidly
changing society.
General Objectives

It is necessary for every school to prepare and develop a comprehensive plan based on the Education Authority’s document. This plan will include details of the education course and the way it is operated in order to ensure that the education given to the pupils meets fully with the aims of the document.
Religious Education
Ysgol Craig y Don has no direct or formal affiliation.
The religious education provided is based on the agreed syllabus. Suitable arrangements can be made for children whose parents object to them receiving religious instruction or attending religious services.
Sex Education
Health and sex education is provided as part of a continuing programme throughout the infant and junior years. The governing body has decided that sex education will be provided for all children in a manner appropriate to their age and development as part of a wider teaching programme, which emphasizes the importance of family life and personal relationships. At Foundation Phase and lower Key Stage 2 all the health and sex education is of a very general nature. In upper Key Stage 2, Years 5 and 6, the human reproductive system is taught and linked to Science, Personal, Social and Health Education. Our approach is continually under review to take account of pupils’ differing needs.
Parents/carers have a right to withdraw their child from sex education. Please contact the Headteacher if you wish to discuss this.

WELSH LANGUAGE – STATEMENT OF INTENT
General Aims
The Conwy County Borough Council operates a bilingual policy in all its schools.
The aim is to develop the ability of pupils within the county so that they may become confidently bilingual and can be full members of the bilingual society of which they are a part.

All educational establishments within the county should reflect and reinforce the language policy in their administration, their social life and their pastoral arrangements, as well as in their academic provision. It will be the responsibility of the Authority (in conjunction with the Head and the School Governors) to ensure that competent teachers are available in order that the proportion of time allocated to the teaching of both Welsh and English is in accordance with National Curriculum requirements.
Schools or units where Welsh is the main medium of instruction will be available, within reasonable travelling distance, for all children whose parents desire such provision. Children in such schools will have regular and frequent instruction in English throughout their time in the Infant and Junior Schools.
Specific Aims
A cross-county representation of Conwy headteachers are members of the County Welsh Working Party. The main aim of the group, with the support of the Athrawon Bro, is to ensure that the provision and support for the development of the Welsh Language meets the needs and requirements of schools.
Nursery Education
Our aim is to ensure, through sensitively structured provision and organisation, that each child receives a firm foundation in Welsh in order to enable him/her, in due course, to attain the aim of full bilingualism.
Infants
Our aim is to build on the Welsh language foundations laid through Nursery Education; to consolidate and develop the mother tongue of children who are Welsh learners; to extend the competence in English of children from Welsh speaking homes.
Juniors
Our aim is to consolidate each child’s capabilities in Welsh and English, both active and receptive so as to progressively develop his/her skills in speaking, reading and writing fluently and confidently in both languages. (Special provision will be made for Junior late-comers)
English As An Additional Language (EAL)
The School works closely with the EAL service provided by Conwy County Borough Council.
Pupils with Additional Learning Needs
Ysgol Craig y Don has well established arrangements for identifying and providing for individual pupils’ additional learning needs. It is our policy to assess pupils’ needs as early as possible. The Code of Practice provides for close monitoring of this provision, which can be in the form of in-class support, short term withdrawal for support or simplification of the curriculum to enhance basic studies.

During all stages in the provision for a pupil’s special needs, we seek to work closely with parents, and emphasise the importance of good working relationships between the school and home.
Pupils with Disabilities
Our school aims to be an inclusive school. We actively seek to remove the barriers to learning and participation that can hinder or exclude individual pupils, or groups of pupils. This means that equality of opportunity must be a reality for all our children, and this of course includes pupils with disabilities. We will ensure that pupils with disabilities have the same opportunities as non-disabled pupils to benefit from the education our school provides.
Our Accessibility Plan details the changes required to our buildings and to other aspects of our school, so that we fulfil our legal requirements, and remove barriers to inclusion for all pupils and staff with disabilities.
Sporting Activities
Wherever possible, the school will support pupils with sports club outside of school. If
necessary and reasonable, pupils will be allowed time away from school to represent
and/or train with sporting squads and organisations. General attendance levels will be
considered and any decision to allow time for such activities is at the discretion of the
Headteacher.
The school encourages all pupils to participate in physical activities and sports. The
focus within the curriculum is on the development of Physical Literacy which provides
pupils with the necessary skill set to participate in sports. Extra curricular clubs are an
opportunity to pupils to develop skills within sports, both individually and in teams.

Teaching & Learning – Additional Activities
Music Lessons (Years 3 to 6)
The school encourages the children to play many varied musical instruments including harp, guitar, drums, brass, woodwind, keyboard and violin. Peripatetic music teachers visit the school to and provide lessons for a fee. Children/Parents are asked in July if they wish to start/continue music lessons the following September. Parents/Carers are expected to agree to pay for a full year’s tuition and will be invoiced by Conwy County Borough Council each term (3 terms per year). Further details available from Reception.
School Choir
The School Choir rehearses once a week during school hours.
Urdd Participation
The school takes part in the Urdd Eisteddfod. Children can compete in various competitions such as singing (individual and group), reciting (individual and group), choir, arts and crafts, and Action Song. Further details of the Eisteddfod dates can be found on the Urdd website.
BOBS/Appetite for Life Programme (Year 5)
This gives children an opportunity to share healthy good food practice with their peers and take part in food hygiene training, presentation skills and practice and cooking/sharing food cooked from simple raw ingredients.
Parents will receive a consent form for their child to take part in this scheme.
Formula One Challenge
Year 5 and 6 pupils have the opportunity to take part in this exciting initiative. F1 in Schools is a unique challenge to deliver STEM subjects both in and out of the class room, and is rewarding for pupils and teachers/parents alike. Pupils have the opportunity to develop key skills such as communication, presenting and team work.
National Standards Cycle Training (Year 5)

This is organised by CCBC and is offered to Year 5 pupils.
Parents will receive a consent form for their child to take part in this scheme. Children need to bring their bike/helmet to school on the cycle training days.
Big Pedal Challenge 2016
The Big Pedal is the UK’s largest inter-school cycling and scooting challenge that inspires pupils, staff and parents to choose two wheels for their journey to school.
PrePedal
PrePedal – provided free from CCBC for Reception Classes in 2016 – is a new and exciting way of teaching early years children how to ride a bicycle and will take place within the school grounds. Consent forms will be distributed to parents.

Teaching & Learning – Homework
The school has a formal policy on homework and the main points are listed below –
Homework is considered to be a very important link between the home and the school. It can be a way of assessing a pupils’ progress by the parents as well as supporting work which has been done in school.
The school should consider the following points when homework is set:
A child’s age. The amount of homework to be set. The number of nights which are allowed for the homework to be completed. The relevance of the work in relationship to the work which is being undertaken in
the class. An individual child’s ability to complete the homework. Homework should be progressive and consistent both in quality and quantity. Homework should be marked on a regular basis.
Examples of Homework which may be set:
READING AT HOME SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED ON A DAILY BASIS FOR ALL CHILDREN.
For young children this might involve ‘paired reading’ with an adult whereas for older pupils a more formal reading record of the book and the number of pages read should be encouraged.
Handwriting exercises should be encouraged.
Learning of mathematical tables (up to x10) might be considered appropriate, but this should only follow a thorough understanding of the meaning of tables.
Homework may involve conducting some research work which will support class studies.
Spellings will be presented to the Junior Classes and this will normally involve having up to twenty words to earn on a Monday in preparation for a test on Friday.
From time to time a particular activity requires information by parents, relations and neighbours, or requires interviewing and research work by the child. It is appreciated that the child is the responsibility of the home during these hours and parents’ willingness or unwillingness to co-operate will be understood in view of this responsibility.
Occasionally a particular teacher may ask a child to do additional work in order to overcome some weakness or to concentrate on a special aspect of work. At such times it is hoped that the full co-operation of the home will be forthcoming together with encouragement to the child to do the work.
It is considered that, because of the obvious educational value of homework, each child will be expected to complete the work unless a letter is received from the parents stating their wish that homework is not set for their child.

In the Foundation Phase, parents are encouraged to read regularly with their children and revise spelling lists set by the school.

Teaching & Learning – Discipline & Promoting Good Behaviour
If we are to sustain a happy and proper learning environment in school, it is very important that we establish appropriate discipline procedures. The school depends on parents’ support in this matter and requests that parents/guardians sign a Home School Agreement when children start school.
We have school rules which must be followed. These rules ensure that no child is allowed to misbehave or disrupt the smooth running of the school. These rules also ensure that the vast majority of children, who want to work and learn, have a right to an effective education.

Teaching & Learning – Pupil Deprivation Grant
Since 2012 the Welsh Government have been providing additional funds for schools to tackle national priorities for education.
The three national priorities are:
1. Reducing the impact of poverty of pupil attainment. 2. Raising standards in literacy. 3. Raising standards in numeracy
The Pupil Deprivation Grant (PDG) is allocated to schools in Wales to enable them to reduce the impact of poverty on pupil attainment and to address the three priorities above. Each school is allocated a sum of money based on the number of pupils who are entitled to free school meals (eFSM) or are Looked After Children (LAC).
The grant is to be utilised to overcome any additional barriers that learners from disadvantaged backgrounds face which may prevent them from attaining as well as their peers. Each school is required to draw up a plan and publish how this grant is utilised on sustainable interventions to improve the attainment of children who may be disadvantaged due to family financial circumstances or background
At Ysgol Craig y Don we have agreed to undertake the following three steps:
– identify the target group of pupils, its characteristics and needs – plan interventions which make the most effective use of resources – monitor and evaluate the impact of resources
In 2015-16 Ysgol Craig y Don received £50250 PDG funding and this allocation will be used to:
provide support programmes including a nurture group, Catch –Up Literacy, speech and language support, focused small group language and maths activities and Guided Reading Groups.
develop leadership capacity across the school with a view to more effective recognition of the needs of the target groups and the monitoring and assessment of the delivery of programmes to meet their needs.
provide in-class support for identified groups of pupils monitor the attendance of identified pupils and to work with them and their families
to improve attendance rates. Make effective use of tracking data, CAT4 tests, FFT profiles and teacher
assessments to monitor pupil and progress and to focus interventions more effectively.
Invest in resources and staff training in creative use of media technology to enhance and enrich the learning experience of the target groups of pupils in literacy and numeracy.

Ysgol Craig y Don took part in the Conwy School Sport initiative to enter a short film competition – Our Story: Physical Literacy in Our School in 2016. The purpose of the competition is for schools and pupils to share what physical activity means to them and what it looks like in school.
We are delighted that Ysgol Craig y Don were winners of the competition! The school won a Go Pro Hero 4 and kit worth over £400.

We welcome your child as a pupil to our school. From now on, his/her happiness at school and general development will benefit from a successful partnership between home and school. We appreciate that parents are the first educators of their children and fully realise the importance of the early years in a child’s development.
Many activities included in the Foundation Phase take place outdoors in all weather! We have a stock of wellingtons and waterproof clothing in the classroom but would appreciate your co-operation by ensuring that your child has appropriate warm clothing during the cold weather. We would also like to ask you as parents and guardians to please send your children to school with shoes that do not have laces e.g. Velcro so that your child can become more independent changing into Wellington boots.
Autumn Theme 2016
The Nursery Class are learning all about Elmer the elephant. He is a multi-coloured patchwork elephant and we use his stories to learn the names of colours and shapes in English and Welsh. We begin with stories about Elmer – explore autumn colours, rainbows and prisms, go for colour and shape walks and build and play with 2D and 3D shapes.

The morning session in the Nursery Class starts at 9am and finishes at 11.15am.
The afternoon session starts at 12.45pm and finishes at 3pm.

Fruit Club
After playtime each day we have a drink and milk (or water if preferred) and a piece of fruit. The under 5’s have a weekly fruit club at the cost of £1 and your child will receive a healthy fruit snack every day for that week. Please send the £1 into the classroom (in an envelope marked with your child’s name) every Monday. Alternatively, parents can pay for fruit in advance for the half term.
School Dinners – £10.50 per week
Dinner money must be paid on a Monday, in a named envelope given to the class teacher.
PE sessions
PE sessions are held are every Wednesday. Please provide black shorts and white t-shirt in a small bag – all with names on. These can be kept in school and sent home at the end of every half term. During Summer term, weather permitting, PE sessions will take part outside – your child will therefore need pumps/trainers in their bags as well as shorts and t-shirts.
Reading Bags
Reading Bags are sent home every Tuesday and are to be returned on the following Monday. This will include either a story book to read and share with your child or a very simple, structured reading book for your child to read. Reading books are chosen carefully by the teacher in accordance with their contents. This supports the shared and individual reading strategies that are used in class to develop each child’s reading at an appropriate pace.

We are learning about changes in the environment which occur during the Autumn
term. Our topic is introduced mainly through the medium of stories and includes aspects

Please notify us IMMEDIATELY if there is a change of address, telephone contact numbers or medical needs. We also need to know who is collecting your child from school and if there is ever a change in these arrangements.
FRUIT CLUB
Please send the £1 into the classroom every Monday morning in a clearly marked envelope and your child will receive a healthy fruit snack every day for that week. This is essential so that we can buy the correct amount of fruit for the week. Unfortunately, if monies are not received on a Monday, your child will not be included in the Fruit Club for that week. Alternatively, payment can be made per half term.
Please help us by labelling all items of clothing clearly with your child’s name. This includes hats, scarves, gloves, coats, sweatshirts, cardigans and shoes.

Spellings and homework will be given out on MONDAYS to practise for a test on FRIDAY. Please ensure that your child’s homework book is returned to school every FRIDAY ready for new spellings and homework.
PE
We have two sessions of P.E. a week, therefore please make sure that P.E. kits are brought in every MONDAY and left in school until FRIDAY. PE sessions will be on Mondays and Wednesdays/Fridays.
Reading Books
We would like READING BOOKS in every day. Please can we remind parents/guardians to sign the reading record on a regular basis.

Welcome to the Year 4 page!
There are many exciting lessons and events planned for Dosbarth Llywelyn and Maelgwn, which will enhance the learning experience of the children.
HOMEWORK
Maelgwn: Homework will be given out on Wednesday, to be returned the following Monday.
Llywelyn: Homework, spellings and times tables will be issued each Monday or Friday in preparation for tests on Fridays. Please encourage children to practise writing each word more than once in their ‘Joined up handwriting book’. This task will help them learn to spell each word carefully. Research work and projects will also be given during each half term.
READING
The children have been issued a book and a reading record to take home and return to school each day. They may have to change their book as soon as they have finished it. Parents are encouraged to read regularly with their children. If your child wishes to take a llyfr Cymraeg home to read, he/she may do so.
PE
PE kits are needed on the following days – no football tops please. Please ensure all items of clothing are labelled.

AUTUMN TERM THEMES 16/17
This term our topic will be based on Earth and Beyond-
This will involve ‘Recycling, reducing, reusing and repairing’, Global Warming, Tidal movements linked to the Moon, Endangered Species and visits to the North and West Shore beaches.
Studies will be based on the storybook ‘George Saves the Day by Lunchtime’ and teachers will be asking children to bring items that can be recycled into class.
A representative from the Conwy Recycling Department will be coming to talk with them about Carbon Footprints.
Children will be asked to look in newspapers/magazines for articles relating to Earth and Beyond – they will be encouraged to bring them into class.
We are hoping that an Astronomer will be able to visit the class to talk about their work and findings and also to discuss the ‘supermoon’, expected at the end of September 2015.
We will also be looking at the history of Maelgwn,’The Dragon of Anglesey’, the King of Gwynedd in the 6th Century. A trip to Llanrhos Church, which is said to lie on a site of a Church built by Maelgwn, is also planned.
SPRING TERM THEMES 15/16
The themes for this term will be Light (work based on the Greek story of Icarus and Daedalus) and Sound, and the Castles of Wales.
We have already enjoyed an overnight stay in Glan Llyn where the children received many memorable experiences including canoeing, orienteering, wall climbing, bowling and swimming in a Welsh environment. Photographs from Glan Llyn can be seen in the Flickr tab.
Numerous children are actively involved in competing at the Area Urdd Eisteddfod being held this Saturday, February 27th. Children will be taking part in singing and reciting. The Arts and Crafts Urdd competition will take place on February 29th.

Our topic will be based on The Victorians and Forces for our science work. This will involve-
Studying Children during the Victorian era: work, school, home life. Visit to Llanberis Slate Museum to experience Victorian life. Study class novel Street Child by Berlie Doherty. Drama ‘The little Match Girl’ Charles Dickens – Oliver. Techniquest trip – Forces workshop Science: Forces. What are forces? BOBS – pupils will continue to have the opportunity to take part in these
sessions. They create healthy meals in the school kitchen and provide taster pots for other pupils to try!
Swimming lessons on a Tuesday morning

We would like to welcome all pupils to year 6, their final year in Ysgol Craig Y Don. This is a year in which we consolidate all previous learning and encourage pupils to perform to the best of their ability in preparation for secondary school.
