In the younger years ’news’ and topic talks are prepared and delivered in all classrooms. We also have a public speaking interest group that runs at lunchtimes for students who need or would like to improve their confi- dence in speaking in front of their peers. Our Stage 2 & 3 classes have had a focus on public speaking this term. Students had the option of undertaking a topic for the Multicultural Public Speaking Competition, with the opportunity of continuing beyond the school level in this competition or completing a chosen class topic. Representatives with a multicultural topic were chosen from each class to present their speech at a Stage Assem- bly. The quality of all the speakers and the content of their messages was very high. Congratulations and good luck to the students below who were the successful stage final- ists going through to the Local Area Multicultural Public Speaking Competition on Thursday 27 June at Homebush Public School. Stage 2 Finalists Taj Gupta - 4D - ‘Multiculturalism in the media’ Constance Liang - 4S ‘Watch your language’ Stage 3 Finalists Xavier Chalise—‘It’s complicated’ Canice Lei‘Human rights or wrongs’ Senior Band Camp The Senior Band spent a cold and blustery day at the Newingon Armory at the combined school's band camp in Week 6. Our students joined Five Dock Public and Burn- side Public Schools to make a combined band of over 100 musicians. They performed 3 songs, Havana, Dark Odys- sey and I Feel Good and sounded fantastic together! The band are congratulated for their outstanding behaviour and work ethic. Attendance Regular attendance at school is essential for students to achieve quality life outcomes Schools in partnership with parents are re-sponsible for promoting the regular attendance of students Parents of children from Kindergarten to Year 12 must ensure their chil-dren attend school every day On occasion your child may need to be absent from school Justified reasons for student absenc es may include

being sick or having an infectious disease

having an unavoidable medical appointment

being required to attend a recognised religious holiday

exceptional or urgent family circumstances eg attending a funeral

Parents must provide an explanation for absences to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence Where an explanation has not been received within the 7-day timeframe the school will record the absence as unjustified on the studentrsquos rec-ord

Each term our school attendance register is checked by our Home School Liaison Officer (HSLO) On a whole attendance rates at Newington PS are very good If attendance falls below 85 the HSLO assists the school in developing strategies and plans to i m-prove attendance This may include

meeting with the classroom teacher executive or principal

a referral to the schoolrsquos learning and support team

a referral to the Home School Liaison Program

Principals may request medical certificates or other documentation when frequent or long term absences are explained as being due to illness Principals may also seek parental permission to speak with medical specialists to obtain information to collabora tively de-velop a health care plan to support your child If the request is denied the principal can record the absences as unjustifie d

Families are encouraged to travel during school holidays If travel during school term is necessary an Application for Extended Leave will need to be completed Absences relating to travel will be marked as leave on the roll and therefore contribute to your childrsquos total absenc-es for the year

Biggest Morning Tea Last week many of our staff put putting their baking skills to the test and provided a sumptuous breakfast and morning tea as part of the Cancer Councils fundraising efforts through the Biggest Morning Tea Through the baking bacon and eggs rolls raffles and donations the staff raised $435 towards cancer research efforts Some staff have current and past personal and family connections to this disease and we were very happy to raise funds which goes towards researching future treatment care or even cure Another $375 was raised through the sale of lsquobeanies for brain cancerrsquo Special thanks to Woolworths Newington for their kind donations
