Amanda Nicholson, WCV: 806! Let's do it!

Comment From jeanUK:

Once upon a time .....

Randy @ Wildlife Center: The Bear Story

Congowings: Last? Mr Huwa . . .

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Randy’s Bear Story begins on Saturday, July 4, 2009. That morning, I received a call from the

Wildlife Center about a Black Bear cub. The cub had been up in a mulberry tree at a farm

in Rappahannock County – about 30 miles from our home in Madison County.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: While there was a bit of uncertainty about it, it seemed that this cub had been separated from its

mother – for how long, not sure?

Randy @ Wildlife Center: At any rate, an effort was going to be made to capture the cub. Wildlife rehabilitator Amo

Merritt –who’s terrific and is very experienced -- was going to the scene to get the cub

out of the tree – and I was on standby to transport the cub to the Center.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Ten-four. Reporting for duty. Ready to serve.

Amanda Nicholson, WCV: Randy is such a helpful transporter.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Late that afternoon, I got a call from Amo.

Comment From Susan in KY:

That's where NX is hanging out now !!!

Randy @ Wildlife Center: No go. They couldn’t coax the cub out of the tree … and there was no way to climb up the tree.

Comment from Anita in MD:

Type, man, type!

Randy @ Wildlife Center: The plan was to try again on Sunday, July 5.

Page 8: Critter Cam Chat Special Guests: Randy Huwa “The Bear Story”€¦ · Made a quick trip (walk ) to Subway for my healthy salad and am waiting for the STORY!!! Yea Comment from

Randy @ Wildlife Center: [patience is SUCH a virtue]

Comment from GN:

Great story Now tell the funny one.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: I talked with Amo again late Sunday morning. Again – no cub.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: AOK … standing by. Ready to serve.

Comment from Linda in Suffolk, VA:

I'm having to remind myself to breathe!

Comment from Guest:

We're hanging on your every word

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Late on Sunday – another call from Amo. The cub HAD been captured. A VDGIF biologist and

someone from Animal Control in Rappahannock got the cub down. How? Not sure.

Comment from Lydia, PA:

Guess they had no melons either

Comment from Shaunna:

A DART AND A NET?????

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Anyway, Amo had the cub … would I be willing to take the bear to the Wildlife Center on

Monday morning?

Comment from Texas Lavender♫:

Randy.....how tall was the tree??

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Significantly taller than you, Ms. Lavender

Congowings:

Were the berries in full bloom?

Comment from GN:

Do bears make nests?

Comment from ThumNail:

I can see and hear Caleb’s children giggling right now.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: So ... Amo's question ... could I pick up the cub?

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Yes, ma’am. Experienced transporter here. I know how to drive to Waynesboro.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: We arranged a rendezvous spot – the McDonald’s on Route 29 in Madison. About 50 miles to

Waynesboro. We synchronized our watches and planned to meet at 0800 – that’s eight in

the morning.

Comment from Priscilla-NJ:

Was the cub heavy when you picked it up?

Comment from Lydia, PA:

But what were you taking the bear in--a car seat????

Amanda Nicholson, WCV: I don't think he even HAS the cub yet.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Monday morning – July 6, 2009 – 0745, and I report to the parking lot at McDonald’s.

Amanda Nicholson, WCV: But I bet he stopped for a fish sandwich.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: I might have ordered a biscuit – I DEFINITELY ordered a Diet Coke.

Comment from Texas Lavender♫:

Did you get the bear a "Happy Meal"??

Comment from majdwj in NoVA:

Did you get the bear a fruit parfait at MickyD's??

Comment from Priscilla-NJ:

Oh My a bear in MickieD's parking lot???

Comment from Carol in Oregon:

Must have been for a huge cat.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: I eye it a bit nervously – it’s a cat carrier, will that work – but Amo knows her stuff and I’ve

transported before and how bad can it be?

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Oh no. No sedation.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: I might have had a little Rescue Remedy but that's all.

Comment from jakermo:

omg, now I can't stop laughing!!

Comment from ThumNail:

The cub was back seat driver........

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Like some other people I know.

Amanda Nicholson, WCV: Oh, snap!

Randy @ Wildlife Center: At that point, the cub begins scratching in the carrier. Not like it’s itching or something – some

SERIOUS scratching.

Comment from Barb in NJ:

Cat carriers are not that sturdy'

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Scratch scratch scratch SCRATCH SCRATCH SCRATCH SCRATCH.

Comment from Lydia, PA:

Sounds a bit like Congo’s squirrel transport story--scratch scratch

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Nothing. All fine. No claws extended from the carrier or anything like that.

Comment from Deb in SD:

I'm sure he just wanted to see the sights along the way.

Comment from bw:

Cub wanted the front seat! With you!

Comment from lochuck:

I can't stand the suspense!

Randy @ Wildlife Center: I mean, I can’t really give the carrier an inch-by-inch inspection – there’s a BEAR CUB inside,

for heaven’s sake – but it seems fine.

Comment from Wings on a Dove:

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Crate is blanketed -- but it's not a blanket of steel!

Comment from Saandi Rock:

Actually, Randy, Texas Lav is fun to travel with. I'm her Mom and lots of fun trips.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: I start to plot a new strategy. Maybe I should stop someplace and pick up a bigger carrier .. and

Randy @ Wildlife Center: You know, build something like those Russian nesting dolls. The cub might break out of one

crate … but there would still be two more containment vessels.

Comment from Wings ♥♥♥♥ ♥:

How did the cub behave every time you stopped to check on it??? Did it growl at you???

Comment from Jadine TX:

Oh Randy, it's just a little bear! How bad can it be? LOL

Randy @ Wildlife Center: I figure out stops. There’s a veterinary clinic … there. There’s a Lowe’s … up THERE. I’m

trying to figure out what might be open this early

Comment from jakermo:

Clearly men and women would go about this differently.

Comment from Deb in SD:

Maybe an armored car!

Comment from Shaunna:

Randy, your story should be a book! Income for WCV:)

Congowings: uh huh!!!

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Maybe I should call Lowe’s and explain that I have this bear cub and I need them to bring three

carriers – medium, large, extra-large – and could they bring them out of the curb and

would it be okay if I didn’t pay for them but returned them later?

Comment from MaryJane-LakeGeorgeNY:

Was the bear muzzled?????

Comment from Mary Lou:

This sounds like a job for Nasa

Comment from Deb in SD:

Break out the Visa card, Randy!

Randy @ Wildlife Center: I pull over one more time … to check the carrier. Intact. Bear ... looks at me quietly. And no, the

bear was not muzzled.

Comment from katiesmom:

and cubs sound like human babies crying.....

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Combine a human baby’s cry with a goat’s bleat … blend up heart-rending pathos and sorrow …

and that’s the sound.

Did you try paying music for it?

Amanda Nicholson, WCV: Yes, but worse than human babies.

Did you cry along with the cub, Randy?

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Oh dear God he’s hurt himself. He’s caught his paw on something or has tried to bite the carrier

door and has broken all of his teeth or he’s impaled through the head with something and

he’s dying and this is the sound that he makes.

Comment from Dorie:

Were you crying, too?

Comment from Carol aka Carewolf:

When did you give it the "Rescue Remedy"? Or did you take it-I would have about then

Comment from Sandy from Edinboro:

I'd cry too if I was being kidnapped (bearnapped)

Comment from Amy in PA:

I'm crying............

Comment from Doris:

Poor baby!!!!!

Randy @ Wildlife Center: ANOTHER stop. All okay.

Comment from Me:

Now you sound like us imagining all the awful things.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: This sequence repeats itself … scratch rock wail. Scratch rock wail. Scratch rock wail.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: And then ...

Randy @ Wildlife Center: total silence

Comment from Louise from Nor Cal:

Stop Stopping!!!

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Ok that’s it, he’s dead. He’s gone into shock … or he’s broken out to the carrier and is crawling

around in the back of the Subaru.

Comment from Me:

Oh no, always have to fear the silence.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Why isn’t he making noise?

Comment from Amy in PA:

Whaaaaaaaaaaat?????

Comment from Dorie:

Oh geez!!

Comment from katiesmom:

Did you call the center - or someone!!!

Randy @ Wildlife Center: First, I’d have to leave the cub in the car for a few minutes, and it is pretty hot … and that’s not a

good idea

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Second, what if the cub gets out of the carrier while I’m inside? I can just imagine calling

VDGIF … or Dr. Dave … or Ed … or AMANDA?

Comment from judyy:

Don’t you let him lose!

Randy @ Wildlife Center: I ain't scared of much ... but I AM scared of Amanda!!!!

Randy @ Wildlife Center: “Hey, it’s Randy, I’m at Whole Foods in Charlottesville and there’s this bear cub that’s loose in

my car and I’m not really sure if I can get in without him getting out so that’s kind of a

problem?”

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Ok … no Whole Foods today.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: And then we begin … the Grand Traverse.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: It’s about 25 miles from Whole Foods to Waynesboro. On Interstate 64. Up over Afton

Mountain.

Comment from Guest:

I think the bear had his full attention.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: On Route 29, I had LOTS of options for stopping.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: On the Grand Traverse – not so much. I gather my courage … and we launch off.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Clear as a bell. I think.

Comment from Texas Lavender♫:

How’s the best way to give to the Center? Check, or PayPal, or credit card. I want to make sure

that the Center gets the most money!

Comment from Mary E in NC:

Thanks, Randy - your story was worth the wait!!

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm ... okay ... let's see ...

Randy @ Wildlife Center: There are pros and cons for all of these. We pay a small transaction fee for PayPal and for credit

cards, but it’s quick and easy to make a donation that way – no postage and it’s almost

instantaneous! – and it’s quick and easy for us to receive the funds.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: For a check – a bit more administrative work for us – we have to pull together a bank deposit and

take it to the bank – and we do pay a small fee based on the number of transactions.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: It really comes down to what is easiest for the DONOR !

Comment from Trish D:

How can we note that due to your story telling ability, we donated.

Chat with Randy Huwa 38 7/6/12

Randy @ Wildlife Center: If you're using PayPal, just use the SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS field

Randy @ Wildlife Center: or send us an email

Comment from Lydia, PA:

I think Randy prefers the DONATE button myself

Randy @ Wildlife Center: we'll figure it out

Comment from Laurie Edmonton Canada:

But international donations (including Canada) should only be via PayPal or credit card to avoid

really stiff bank handling charges, correct?

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Yes, please!

PayPal works REALLY well for international donations.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: And you don't have to have a PayPal account to use our DONATE button.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: We use PayPal as our online bank -- you just need a credit card!

Comment from Mary:

Would you prefer donations made for a particular project – like a piece of equipment or the bear

enclosure – or a general donation?

Randy @ Wildlife Center: BOTH are important and critical. And it’s really up to the individual.

We need to acquire new equipment … and put up new outdoor enclosures … but we also need

general donations to pay salaries, keep on the lights and a/c, buy supplies, food,

medicine, etc., etc., etc.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: This week ... that money for air conditioning is REALLY appreciated

Randy @ Wildlife Center: In 2011, thanks to the help and votes of Critter Cam folks, we received $200,000 in Big Idea

funds from Chase Community Giving. We used ALL of that money to purchase “stuff”

and services – new medical equipment, construction of new outdoor patient enclosures,

trenching to set up our new webcam network, setting up a web-host for Critter Cam and

the moderated discussion, etc.

Page 39: Critter Cam Chat Special Guests: Randy Huwa “The Bear Story”€¦ · Made a quick trip (walk ) to Subway for my healthy salad and am waiting for the STORY!!! Yea Comment from

Chat with Randy Huwa 39 7/6/12

Randy @ Wildlife Center: We didn’t use ANY of the Big Idea Chase funds for salaries, or project development, or

overhead, or any ongoing programs – it was all for special “new” things!

Randy @ Wildlife Center: But we couldn’t operate the Center very long with only money for special “new” things.

Comment from Guest:

so are you saying that just general donations are better sometimes?

Randy @ Wildlife Center: I have a special fondness in my heart for general donations ... because the Center can use them

for anything!

Randy @ Wildlife Center: but BOTH kinds of gifts are important ... and appreciated!

Comment from Anne in NoVa:

It's so nice to know how our donations help out the center. Other places I donate to are just so

impersonal.

Comment from KJ:

Randy, had to read back, arrived late....:-( loved the your bear story. Will hit the donate button

for WCV to use where they need most in honor of your story!!!! Thank you so much.

Comment from ThumNail:

Mr. Huwa, how about Buddy, is his care covered only by donation?

Randy @ Wildlife Center: EVERYONE's care is covered only by donations!

Amanda Nicholson, WCV: Your donations pretty much cover everything we do here!

Comment from tinksmom/MO:

Good deal, general is it then, thanks for the information Randy!

Comment from nef in ME:

Does money from the gala go to the general fund?

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Yes, indeed.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: And my wife and I attended an Open House.

The worst part of your job must be the decisions to end an animal's life....especially when you try

SOOOO hard to save each one.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Hmmmmmm ... I'm not a vet, so that's not part of MY hard decisions but ... yeah, that can be a

difficult one.

Comment from Priscilla-NJ:

Sorry I can't give money, but I hope the ropes, twines and tapes I send make up for it. Maybe

someday.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Ms. Priscilla, you bet!! There are LOTS of different ways to help the Center ... including helping

with in-kind gifts ... and spreading the word ... and voting in Chase competitions ... and ...

Comment from bj in UT:

Randy... you are a definite asset to WCV and are also a VERY GOOD storyteller :o)

Comment from Regina, IL:

I wish I worked there but then I wouldn't have this cushy job with my brother and be able to

"listen" to Randy's story while I "work" and watch the 3 bears. Thanks for all you guys

do.

Comment from Me:

Sending a special package to Mr. Huwa tomorrow. Hopefully, it will arrive by next Friday.

Comment from Pataz, Phoenix AZ:

Donate button works in Phoenix! Thank you so much not only for today's story but for all the

work and education the Center does both for wildlife and educating people!

Comment from Lydia, PA:

What will be the subject for your NEXT story hour Randy? I vote for Randy's Story Hour to be a

monthly feature on the Critter Cam Discussion. What say you CN?

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Do they need to be TRUE stories?

Amanda Nicholson, WCV: That's what makes them funny, Randy.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm ... okay.

Randy @ Wildlife Center: Well, not sure about every month but ... I'll coordinate with Ms. Amanda.

Comment from ThumNail:

May be story about our sweet Amanda.......

Amanda Nicholson, WCV: Noooooooo ... no stories about Amanda.

Comment from CB in Louisiana:

Yeah, a true one about Amanda

Randy @ Wildlife Center: we'll see.

Comment from Guest:

No, they don't need to be true - just funny (and if Amanda gets ragged on a bit, even better!)
