THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX

The phrase “think outside the box” is used a lot in English. Most people do not know

where this saying came from, but some say that it started with the “9 Dots Puzzle”.

It teaches a very important lesson about thinking critically and creatively. This puzzle first

appeared in a puzzle book in 1914 and has become very popular.

Here is the puzzle :

You must draw through all of the dots with 4 straight lines without picking up your pen.

TRY IT!

Most people find this to be very difficult because they do not realize that the simple

solution is to draw a little ‘’outside of the box”. The lesson to be learned is that you

should not limit yourself but should try to think outside of the box. Do not limit yourself

with one way. Ask questions and make guesses, be a critical thinker.

The questions on page 5 were the ones that really made you think. The answers could not be found in

the paragraph on page 4. You had to use what you read in the paragraph to help you think of the

answers.

THESE questions are questions that make you use your CRITICAL THINKING skills!

Critical Thinking is …

1) to compare 2) to ask other questions 3) to be creative 4) to think “outside the box” 5) to solve a problem

Let´s see how we can use Critical Thinking to solve problems and think about things in a new way…

Read the questions carefully and remember to think outside the box.

CRITICAL THINKING

If it takes six men one hour to dig six holes, how long does it take one man to dig half a hole?

How many seconds are in a year?

You are running in a street marathon and you pass the person in 2nd place. What place are you now?

What five letter word becomes shorter when you add two letters to it?

A boy was rushed to the hospital emergency room. The ER doctor saw the boy and said, "I cannot operate on this boy. He is my son." But the doctor was not the boy’s father. How could that be?

Today, we live in a world that is full of technology. Every single day, we all use many kinds of machines

to make things easier for us, to help us communicate, to help us work in a better way, or to entertain us.

Think about the technological items that you and your family use every day or several times a week.

Write them in the chart below.

Then rate these according to the time you spend on them every day.

The Smith family is thinking about turning off their TV for 7 days, but they have some questions and want

your advice. Talk to the other members of your group and see if you can help the Smiths. Write one or two

sentences in the box below each question.

1. Danny Smith (11 years old) asks “Why turn off the television for a whole week? Can’t we do it for just one day?”

2. Sally Smith (13 years old) asks “Is all TV bad? What about the Discovery Channel?”

3. Mindy Smith (15 years old) asks “Do we have to plan a family activity every night?”

4. Mrs. Smith says, “I need some peace and quiet time in the evening. The television keeps the kids busy while I prepare dinner. How will they spend time?”

5. Mr. Smith says “I can't afford to take the whole family out for some fun activity every night. That would

be very expensive. What are we going to do?”

OR

- Create a board game related to the dangers of too much TV and how we can use our time with

better options. Be ready to present it in class.

For this challenge make one of these products: - Make a poster about why we should not waste time with Social Media and

what other better activities we can do instead. Be ready to present it in class. OR - Interview 2 people and ask them questions related to our topic. (you may use

the questions on page 12.) While interviewing these people take notes about their answers and write these in your own sentences on your note cards. (Be careful: If you don’t have any note cards while your presentation , your project is not completed.)

3 – NO rechargeable devices at home and wherever you are for 48 hours. Devices with

rechargeable batteries such as laptops, ipads, cell phones, ipods etc..use a lot of energy and put bad chemicals into the environment when we throw them away. DO NOT use or charge any of these devices for 48 hours. For this challenge this should be your product:

- Make a poster about the environmental danger of rechargeable batteries. OR - Prepare a brochure about the negative effects of rechargeable batteries and how we can make them use less.

TURN IT OFF PROJECT __________________________________________________________________ CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING CHALLENGES BELOW:

1 - Watch no TV or anything similar, such as a video downloaded on any other electronic device and play no iPad games for 48 hours. Be ready to talk about this experience. (Was it difficult? How did it affect you and the people around you? How did you feel? What makes you say that? Do you think you gained something? ) For this challenge make one of these products: - Make a poster about why we should not waste time in front of TV / i-Pads and what other better

activities we can do instead. Be ready to present it in class.

2 – Do not visit any social media site or app for 48 hours. Do NOT post any status updates or upload any photos to social media sites for 48 hours. Do NOT check or comment on any photos or statuses for the given time period. (no Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Skype, musically, etc.)

EARLY FINISHER TASKS - WHY TURN IT OFF ?

Turning off the TV is a great way to improve your and your family’s health.

Watching less TV helps you to get more exercise and eat a healthier diet. When you watch too much TV or spend too

much time on i-pads , you sit still for long periods of time. And all those television commercials for fatty, sugary,

salty foods also encourage an unhealthy diet. One study found 8 commercials for unhealthy foods during every 10

minutes of TV time.

Read the questions and discuss with your partner.

Write and be ready to share the answers.

1) Why is the idea ‘turning off TV’ important?

_____________________________________________________________________________________

2) What kinds of commercials do we see on television?

_____________________________________________________________________________________

3) Do you think the commercials on TV make you eat unhealthy foods? What makes you say that?

_____________________________________________________________________________________

4) Thinking about how much TV is watched, what is the situation in Turkey? In your family? How many hours

a day do you watch TV?

_____________________________________________________________________________________

Did you know?

98 percent of American households have at least one TV.

The average adult, by the age of 65, will have spent 9 years watching TV!

Children in USA watch an average of 27 hours of TV a week. By age 18, the American child has spent more

time watching TV than time in school.

Studies show that children who watch a lot of TV are more likely to be overweight or obese.

(DANGERS OF SOCIAL MEDIA) Reference : https://smartsocial.com/negative-effects-of-social-media/

Negative effects of social media

Anxiety & depression: Research suggests that young people who spend more than 2 hours per day on social media are more likely to report poor mental health, including psychological distress (symptoms of anxiety and depression).

Sleep: Numerous studies have shown that increased social media use has a significant association with poor sleep quality in young people. Using phones, laptops, and tablets at night before bed is also linked with poor quality sleep.

Body image: Body image is an issue for many young people, both male and female. Studies have shown that when women in their teens and early twenties view Facebook for only a short period of time, body image concerns are higher compared to non-users.

Cyberbullying: Bullying during childhood is a major risk factor for a number of issues including mental health, education and social relationships, with long-lasting effects often carried right through to adulthood.
