Learn to ‘surf the net’ with Sedgefield Borough HomesSedgefield Borough Homes (sbh) is hosting a week of internet taster sessions for people in south Durham, as part of a national campaign to get an increased number of older people online. The aptly named ‘Silver Surfer’ sessions are being held free-of-charge by the housing provider and are aimed at local residents aged 50 years or older who would like to find out more about computers and using the internet. Six drop-in sessions will be held throughout the week, commencing, Monday 16th May between 10am and 1pm at Spennymoor Library and 1.30pm – 4.00pm at the Cornforth House Partner-

ship. This will be followed by additional sessions on; Tuesday 17th May between 9.30am and 12.30pm at Newton Aycliffe Library and 1.00pm – 4.30pm at Shildon Library, Thursday 19th May between 9.30am – 12.30pm at Trimdon Library and 1pm – 4pm at the Ladder Centre in Ferryhill. Malcolm Gray, improving communities co-ordinator, for sbh, said, “The sessions are aimed at complete beginners and are open to anyone, not just tenants of sbh. We will provide all equipment and tutors will be on hand to offer one-to-one advice and show people how to get

started using the internet. We want our communi-ties to know sbh is here to help.” The taster sessions are being held to celebrate Spring Online with Silver Surfers’ Day (16th - 20th May), a national campaign which helps give older people and other less confident users a taste of the digital world. Research shows that one in five people aged 55-64 have never used the internet and this rises to three in five of those aged over 65.For more information contact Malcolm Gray on 0845 505 5500 or e-mail [email protected].

A talented Shildon teenager has earned the title of County Ladies’ Golf Champion, after entering the championships at Wearside Golf Club last weekend.Fifteen year-old Rebecca Horner, from Rosedale Crescent, entered the competition two years ago and did remarkably well - reaching the semi-final. This time, Rebecca won her semi-final game 5-4, propelling her into the final after breezing through the first two rounds.Rebecca won the first hole of the final and halved the second, but she later

went one hole down. She soon started winning again however, and was two points up coming off the 14th green.Standing on the 17th tee Rebecca was two up with two to play. Her tee shot went flying down the middle, whereas her opponent’s landed in the trees. By the third shot, Rebecca’s ball was close to the hole while her rival hit hers off the back of the green and missed her fourth and fifth shots. She then conceded the game, handing Rebecca a well-earned 3-1 win.Rebecca said, “I would like to thank my caddie Rob Jones, also from Shildon, who never let me down over the six rounds of golf. Also my coach Ralph Given from Stressholme Golf in Darlington.”

Rebecca Horner is the County Ladies’ Golf Champion.

Last season Marsden Cricket Club played in the Durham Senior League but was relegated to the Durham County League, so the teams were meeting for the first time ever in a league fixture. Shildon 1st XI found batting difficult at the sea-side, as the ball moved about and the innings was interrupted by rain. The visitors compiled a credible 165 all out, with Carl McGregor top scoring with 51, Matthew Brown (36) and Tyler Temple (24) adding vital support.

Marsden rock RailwaymenThings looked good for Shildon as Marsden were reduced to 55 for 5 but a fine undefeated knock of 74 by P. Jackson turned the tide in the Seasiders favour and Marsden ran out winners by five wickets. At the Sportsfield Marsden, with an eye on the weather, declared their innings after 39 overs with the score at 204 for 4. Shildon’s bowlers had toiled with little success, Dan Richardson taking 2 for 64. In reply several Shildon batsmen made good starts but none

managed to go on to make the big score needed and the innings finished 31 runs short of victory. The home side were all out for 173 runs with Lee Douthwaite (37), Matthew Summerbell (33) not out, skipper Dave Coglan (29) and young Thomas Moss 27 being the main contributors. So both senior sides have each lost their opening three league fixtures but some consolation can be taken in that performances have been of a decent standard.

With only two games of the season remaining and a mid-table place secured, there wasn’t too much to play for in a typical end of season game for Shildon Grey Horse.Fifteen players were available as manager Dougie Grant and assistant Kev Wild were to give all players a good run out.Penshaw, who are to be relegated from the division at the end of the season, had to win to avoid finishing bottom and they looked the hungrier and more focused side in the early stages. In a scrappy first half the Grey Horse never really got going, Penshaw taking

the lead on 25 minutes when slack marking by a lethargic-looking back four let in the Penshaw forward to score easily.Team captain Neil Bannister got Shildon back into the game within five minutes, however. After a midfield tussle, the ball fell kindly to him and he had the composure to tuck the ball away past the oncoming keeper. An early 2nd half goal saw Penshaw take the lead for the second time but again within minutes the Grey Horse equalised, this time through Dougie Grant who had only been on the field a couple of minutes as a

second half substitute. It wasn’t to be the Grey Horse’s day though, as two late Penshaw goals and a score of 4-2 did flatter them, but the Shildon side hadn’t played well as it appeared that most of the team had gone on their holidays early.A spokesperson for the club said, “Thanks over the course of the season to Brian Stoker for his sponsor-ship by means of a meat draw and to the Sportsfield committee for allowing use of their changing facilities whilst the council-ran ones were out of use and of course to Neil, Susan and Lucy at the Grey Horse for their excellent hospitality.”

Shildon Town Bowling Club got off to a great start with three wins in the first week of the new season. The ladies’ team beat Darlington Woodlands by 2½ points to 1½ points at home on Wednesday. The men's VET's travelled to Sherburn where they beat their B team 8 - 0 andin the Darlington & District

Men's League, the town team won 4 - 1 at Barnard Castle.A club-drawn pairs com-petition was played on Saturday 7th May for the Dickinson Memorial Trophy, the winners being Colin Blood and Anne Camp who beat Beryl Airey and Colin Baxter in the final.

Grey Horse play final game

Sharron Hedley Memorial match On Sunday 1st May Old Sharron club entertained Shildon Athletic in a match sponsored by Shoey’s Taxis played in memory of Sharron Hedley. Just under a year ago, Sharron lost her battle with cancer and passed away. Her sons Martin and James arranged this match, which they plan to make an annual event. The match started evenly with chances at both ends. Shildon Athletics Kevin Kavanagh came close with a free header, but the half time whistle blew with ‘keeper Gareth Davies doing well to keep honours even at 0-0.The second half was an entirely different story,

with goals galore. Man of the match Anthony Moss netted a hattrick for Old Sharron, with Lee Davies (2), Robert Wilson (2), Kev Wilson, Lewis Whensley and Paul Whensley all bagging goals. Kevin Gerrard netted twice for Shildon Atheltic, taking the final score to 10-2 and a nice victory for Old Sharron.Captain Paul Whensley proudly received the Memorial Sheild at the after-match presentation, with all players being very pleased to have been involved. All of Sharron’s family would like to thank everyone who turned up to pay their respects and make the day a huge success.

Heighington Boys seek coachHeighington Boys AFC is one of the fastest growing youth setups in the area and is looking to further bolster its management and coaching staff with the appointment of a new

manager/coach.The vacancy is for the U15 team who play their football in the TJFA League Division One and applicants should ideally be level 1 qualified and CRB checked

through Durham FA. This could be facilitated however, once an ap-pointment is made. Any interested parties should contact club chairman Mel Oakes on 07775 855352.

Shildon Railway under 13's cricketers enter-tained Mainsforth in their opening home fixture of the season.Mainsforth batted first and posted 85-4 from their twenty overs. A feature of the innings

was some excellent fielding, with two run outs and two good catches held by the Shildon youngsters.Shildon opened their reply under leaden skies with opening batsman M. Claydon top scoring, with 19 runs from a total of 34

Rain stops playfor 0 from seven overs. Unfortunately, a heavy rain shower ended the match with Shildon in a good position. Match drawn. The Under 13’s next fixture is away to Tudhoe on Sunday 15th May at 10am.

Jubilee FC make finalA busy recent schedule has seen Shildon Jubilee FC progress to the final of the Paul Stephens Cup, beating some high flyers in the division above to make sure of their appearance on cup final day.On Sunday 24th April they took on Tudhoe and managed to turn the tie around to win 3-1, after going 1-0 down early on. Danny Thomas grabbed two goals (one of them an absolute worldie Jeff!) with Jamie Scaife getting the other. Shane Taylor picked up the man of the match award.Tuesday 3rd May saw

the semi-final fought out against Half Moon FC, another higher league opponent – but this didn’t phase Jubilee. They ran out 3-0 winners with goals from Anthony Gillan (2) and Luke Ingeldew. Shane Taylor again picked up man of the match, turning out another superb perfor-mance.What an achievement for Jubilee FC, who a year ago didn’t even have a team. They will now be playing in the final at Coxhoe Football Club on Sunday 15th May. Bring it back to Shildon lads!
