Local Motion is being delivered by Durham County Council and aims to promote sustainable travel within the south Durham area, particularly around Bishop Auckland, Shildon and Newton Aycliffe. Sus- tainable travel is any means of transport with a low or reduced impact on the environment and natural resources. The scheme is funded by the Department for Transport (DfT) through the Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF) and the County Durham initiative will link into a successful similar scheme, which has been operating in Darlington for the past five years. Cllr Neil Foster, Cabinet member for regeneration and economic develop- ment, said, “Transport is an important part of modern life and how you travel is even more crucial. With a little bit of thought it is easy to be healthier, save money and make a difference to the world around us. “Local Motion is here to offer information and tips to help residents think about how they get to wherever they are heading. “My message is simple; come and join the Local Motion and help us make our county even better.” A launch event will be taking place on Saturday 26th May, between 9.30am and 4pm at Market Place, Bishop Auckland. Among the organisations attending will be Durham Police, Hartlepool Cycle Clinic and a face painting and balloon modelling company, as well as Local Motion Travel Rangers. Jubilee Fields Community Centre has been granted almost £80,000 in funding from BBC’s Children in Need. The money will enable to Centre to continue the employment of the Playstaff team (who provide three, weekly Junior Club sessions for youngsters aged between 5 and 13 years) until May 2015. A spokesperson for Children in Need commented, “We are delighted that we have been able to award another £10.9 million in this grant round, helping support projects like the Jubilee Fields Community Centre. It really is going to make a huge difference to the lives of the children and young people, not only in Shildon, but across the UK. A spokesperson from Jubilee Fields Community Centre said, “We are absolutely thrilled that we have been successful in gaining funding from BBC Children in Need for the children of Shildon. Jail for ‘three strikes’ burglarA Shildon man has been sentenced to two and-a-half years in prison after receiving ‘three strikes’. Durham Crown Court heard how one of Clinton Ross’s recent burglaries was at a house in Henry Street on 16th April where he stole £100 in cash and a model.Another was at the con-venience store underneath his flat in Church Street, where he stole chocolate and other items of confec-

tionary.Dan Cordey, mitigating, said that as a result of his arrest the 31 year-old was recalled to prison to serve an unexpired part of a previous sentence and that his client was aware he stood to receive a mandatory three-year sentence. Durham Constabulary is always looking at innovative ways of ap-prehending and identify-ing criminals who target motor vehicles to either steal or steal from. To help them with this, Shildon Neighbourhood Police Team has deployed a number of vehicles onto our streets which are sometimes referred to as ‘sting’ or ‘rat trap’ vehicles. These vehicles have state of the art technology fitted to them which enables police to either apprehend the offender at the time of committing the offence, or identify who is responsible and arrest them at their home addresses.

When asked about this ongoing initiative Neigh-bourhood Police Inspector Mark Hall said, “Let me reassure our communities that we are using every available means to initially prevent and, where necessary, detect crime. The use of these ‘rat trap’ vehicles across our streets is only one of our many different ways in which Durham Constabulary is tackling crime in your local area.”The police also want the community to assist in the prevention of vehicle crime. A vast majority of these types of offences are committed by op-portunist thieves who see items of value being

left on visible display within vehicle. Durham Constabulary want to work with communities in the prevention of vehicle crime and Inspector Hall went on to say, “We urge the public to remove from their vehicles any items of value while your vehicle is unattended, or if this is not possible then to place these items out of view.“It is not only the initial loss of property and damage to the motor vehicle which affects us as individuals but the bigger picture is that if we have to make a claim on our individual motor vehicle insurance policies then we find that future monetary premiums tend to increase.”

Timothy Hackworth School has recently become involved in the Sustrans "Bike It" initiative. Sustrans is a leading UK charity which makes smarter travel choices possible, enabling people to travel by foot, bike or public transport for more of the journeys we make every day.A representative from Bike It has been working with the children giving safety advice and promoting the

possibility of cycling to school. On Friday 11th May children and their parents were invited to cycle to school and partake in a free breakfast together. This was very successful with over 50 families taking part. From Monday 21st May, all Timothy Hackworth children, with the consent of their parents, will have the opportunity to cycle to and from school

with cycles being stored securely during the school day. Bike It will continue to be involved giving safety advice and tips on keeping cycles maintained correctly. If you have any unused Lego and/or board games such as Ludo, Snakes & Ladders etc, Timothy Hackworth School would be grateful to receive them for use at breakfast club and lunchtimes.

Plans submitted to knock down local pub

The Flag and Whistle has stood empty since August 2011.

The Flag & Whistle Pub on the corner of Strand Street and Mill Street, could be knocked down if plans are passed by Durham County

Council. A Mr. Bob Levin has submitted the ap-plication, which proposes the erection of five, two bedroom homes on the

plot. The pub closed last August due to a combina-tion of high overheads and lack of support from locals, say the previous landlords.

Jail for man who burgled his sisterAnthony Hall, of John Street in Shildon, has been jailed for three years after being found guilty of burgling his sister. The 32 year-old took a games console, games, an MP3 player and a laptop computer from his sibling’s home in Darlington, before

boasting about his crime to a friend. Hall also robbed a man in Newton Aycliffe of £2,000 worth of belongings on Christmas Day, after the man had given Hall a place to stay over the holidays. The Judge at Teesside Crown Court, Recorder Felicty Davies, jailed Hall for three years and four months saying, “The most significant factor is the victim is your sister and you went in through an insecure door knowing she was out. What makes the second offence so unpleasant is it was committed on Christmas Day. The victim was a man who took you in.”

Shildon Running and Athletics Club provided some excellent athletes who excelled at the North East Counties Track and Field Championships over the weekend of 12th and 13th May. The club's junior women in the sprint group set the standards on the 1st day of competition, with Laura Walker (gold) and Rachel McHugh (bronze) dominating the junior women's 200m final with respective season's best and personal best (pb) performances. Laura and Rachel continued to excel against the best junior athletes the region can muster on a cold second day of competition. Laura completed the sprint double in the 100m final, blasting her way through the strong headwind like a cannonball, after which she battled her way through her least favourite event, the 400m, to earn the silver medal in a pb time. Rachel followed this up by winning the Triple Jump, leaping 11.44m (pb), a result which now ranks her in the

Shildon Railway Cricket Club’s matches in the Readers Durham County League fell foul of the weather for the second week running when the whole of the league’s fixture list was abandoned last weekend. “Hopefully the weather will improve and we can get some matches played at last,” said a club spokesman.” Our ground,

despite hours of prepara-tion, has not been able to cope with the rain but we have, thankfully, fared better than some other clubs,” he added. This weekend sees the 1st XI at home in the league on both Saturday and Sunday to title hopefuls Brandon and Crook Town respec-tively. The second team will be away in the reverse fixtures. Shildon Railway Cricket Club Under 18s side enjoyed an emphatic victory at home to Langley Park in their Readers Durham County League fixture. Batting first, on a gloriously sunny evening, the home side set a target of 155, losing three wickets

New record standin doing so. The highlight of the innings was a terrific third wicket partnership of 131 between Brett Upton (64) and Ellis Horner (57 not out), which sets a new league record. In reply the visitors reached 94 for 7 in their allotted twenty overs.

looking for new players at all levels. Juniors at Under 13, Under 15 and Under 18 age groups and both senior sides would welcome additions to their squads. national top 10 for her age group. Under-17 Georgia Hirst, ran to a proud bronze medal in 2.25.80 in the 800m final, whilst younger middle distance girls Lizzie Cramb and Gabrielle Suffield ran 2.35.42 and 3.02.23 respec-tively. Lizzie was delighted with her first major event bronze medal. The club's U15 boys strove to match the older girls’ standards, with both Josh Mclay and Connor Barras both winning through to the finals of both the 100m and 200m, with lightening runs despite running from the bottom end of the age group. Connor lowered both his 100m and 200m pbs in the process, whilst Josh reinforced his growing reputation within the club by leaping to an excellent silver medal in the long jump. However, the middle distance squad proved to be amongst the best of the rest, with the Under-20M Cameron Boyek reaching gold medal with a season’s best over the 800m with

1.53.07. Close on his heels was Michael Bleasby with 1.58.83 and a silver medal in the bag. During the 1500m under-20 M races, there was lots of jostling and it appeared to suit Matthew Coulthard who ran to a new pb of 4.15.49, whilst Michael Bleasby dominated the race to win in 4.07.01. Meanwhile the club's U15 girls, again competing from the bottom end of the age group, put in excellent per-formances through Courtnie Mills and Emily Gledhill. The girls finished 4th and 6th against the region's best long jumpers, despite having relatively little experience of competition. Both girls improved their personal bests by some margin and in future years will surely go on to excel further in this event. Kate Avery was a force to be reckoned with as she hurled herself around the senior women’s 1500m, in an amazing pb of 4.20.75. Amy Etherington was just outside her best performance in the 3k, and finished 2nd with a silver medal in 10.49.77.
