Match fixing in cricket is an everyday affair nowadays across the globe.Although there are certain countries that are blamed for this sort ofcrime in particular, most of the star teams have been involved in spotfixing in cricket some time or the other. In an organized sport like Cricket,

match fixing or spot fixing takes place when a match is being played.

The result or partial stage of the match is pre-determined which iscertainly against the sports ethics as well as the laws.

There are times when games are lost intentionally or teams do not playtheir best to score as high as they could as a part of gamblinginstructions. This is no doubt the most sneering association for theplayers, team officials, umpires and anyone involved in this affair.

Generally match fixing takes place via agents who are popularly knownas bookies. . People who intend to bet on specific games apply through thebookies that act as mediators and often negotiate deals with the teams and

their managers on behalf of the big players.

Now these big players are no doubt the father of all fixing and bettinggame. They are the ones who run this worldwide profitable business of fixingand betting matches. Some of the big shots from the underworld,

international business and even the sports world could be involved in thisnetwork; however they are never caught or detected. Only people who oftenget hooked in this trap are the bookies and players.

Money invested in betting or sport fixing in cricket comesfrom the gamblers betting on their favourite teams acrossthe globe.

It is a large network funded by common men who indulge inbetting for fun, pleasure or money making.

Cricket being the most popular game with globalrecognition has the largest number of scandals associatedwith spot fixing.

In 1999-2000, during the South Africas India tour, Delhi Police capturedconversations between Hansie Cronje, the South African captain and ablacklisted bookie.

They learnt that Cronje accepted money to throw matches.The SouthAfrican government refused to allow any of its players to face the Indianinvestigation unit. A court of inquiry was set up and after Hansie admittedhis crime in front of the South African jury, he was immediately bannedfrom all cricket for good.

He also namedSaleem Malik (Pakistan), Mohammed Azharuddin and AjayJadeja (India).They too were banned from all cricket.

Cronje exposed the dark side of betting, however with his untimely deathin 2002 most of his sources also have escaped law enforcement agencies.Two South African cricketers, Herschelle Gibbs and Nicky Boje, were also

listed as wanted by the Delhi police for their role in the match fixing saga.

information to "John the bookmaker. The report by Rob O'Regan , concluded that cricketers

were not fully informed about the dangers ofinteracting with bookmakers, and although no further

Many think that the bookies fix matches. Thats not true aspunters in Dubai are the ones who call the shots. For any India-Pakistan clash, especially in Sharjah (the hub of match-fixing, saybookies), Dawood control betting syndicates and bookies, as anunwritten rule get caught. And Dawoods influence extends toplayers as well.

There are numerous other instances where players havevoluntarily been involved in betting with an aim to earn big bucksin short time. However there are occasions wherein the teammembers and officials are threatened to take part in sport fixing incricket. The involvement of underworld and international mafia inthe scene makes things even for complicated and intimidating forthe players.

The sole reason why match fixing and betting is in full swing till date isbecause there is no strict law associated with this issue. In India, thegovernment is yet to chalk out precise laws to give strictest punishmentto the players who indulge in cricket betting. Also the ICC and BCCI has

major role to play when it comes to putting a stop on match fixing.

The ICC was slow to react, but did eventually in 2000 set up an Anti-Corruption and Security Unit headed by Sir Paul Condon, former head ofLondon's Metropolitan Police. It claims to have reduced corruption in

jail terms announced for Salman Butt has served as thewarning call for some cricketers, there is a lot more todo in order for eliminating this practice for good.
