As I jotted down notes for my talk, I suddenly realized that every major part of my adult life had some connection to CREW. So here’s the story: I was living in Dallas working for a real estate developer. At the time, real estate in Dallas was booming and every week there was a new building being announced. As our company started to grow, I met a recruiter at a CREW luncheon named Lisa Boyer. Lisa and I began working together hiring my staff. About five years later, Lisa called me and mentioned she had “the perfect job” for me. After several weeks of interviewing, I called a CREW member who had become a mentor to me and asked her opinion. Her advice: “…look what this will do for your career.” I took that job, which was managing the tallest building in Dallas at 72 floors and over 2 million square feet. On the first day of my new job, I met a man, who four years later, I would marry. (And yes, I also met my wedding planner through CREW!) From CREW Dallas I moved with my husband and joined CREW Chicago and then CREW Denver. In Denver, I met a broker who later asked me to work part-time with her firm. The timing could not have been better, as I was six months pregnant. I worked there part-time until and after my son Matthew was born. During that time, I met another future employer, whom I worked with for 13 years prior to moving to Albuquerque. CREW New Mexico had just received its charter when I interviewed with Dan Newman at CBRE in Albuquerque. He knew Jane Pilger and Barbara Morgan, along with other members, and I think he was impressed knowing the caliber of the CREW NM founders. Connections, jobs, mentors, friendships and a husband -- what more could anyone ask from CREW? So why share this now? It’s a great time to get more involved with CREW! In October, we install our 2012 Board Members. Committee or board participation helps you develop your leadership skills and to develop new business relationships. You will certainly meet people who share similar interests. Showing commitment and competency as a board or committee member will demonstrate to your peers that you will do the same in business. What better reference could you have? Committees are gearing up for 2012! If you have questions, please call the Committee Chair, President-Elect Martha Carpenter, or me. A couple of years ago, as the Membership Committee was planning the CREW Informational Social for new and prospective CREW members, I was asked if I would talk about my “CREW connections.” A handful of you have heard this story so I thought I would share it with the rest of you.

Her advice: “…look what this will do for your career.”

I took that job, which was managing the tallest building in Dallas at 72 floors and over 2 million square feet.

Connections, jobs, mentors, friendships

and a husband -- what more could anyone ask from CREW?

So why share this now? It’s a great time to get more involved with CREW! In October, we install our 2012 Board Members. Committee or board participation helps you develop your leadership skills and to develop new business relationships. You will certainly meet people who share similar interests. Showing commitment and competency as a board or committee member will demonstrate to your peers that you will do the same in business. What better reference could you have? Committees are gearing up for 2012! If you have questions, please call the Committee Chair, President-Elect Martha Carpenter, or me. Martha has assembled an impressive group to lead us through 2012 and I know that her vibrant energy and vision will ensure our long-term success.

CREW NM Social Event at Seasons

On the last day of summer, September 22nd, about 30 CREW members and guests met on the roof-top patio at Seasons for CREW NM’s Summer Social Event. Over appetizers of shrimp, calamari and bruschetta, members were able to network with new and prospective members.

Julie Baldridge was promoted from Senior Portfolio Manager to Director of Property Management for Grubb & Ellis|New Mexico. She also passed her CPM exam in September and will be the Executive CPM for Grubb & Ellis|New Mexico, as it is an Accredited Management Organization firm.

Marguerite Haverly and Danelle Brennan have been selected to participate in Leadership Albuquerque’s Class of 2012.

CREW Member-to-Member BusinessAmber Sanchez, director of broker administration at Grubb & Ellis|NM, has a big thank-you for Michelle Dux of Service Master Performance. Michelle organized the cleaning of the carpet in the office of Grubb & Ellis|New Mexico, which had to be completed in a timely fashion and included eliminating several “challenging” stains. Michelle was able to juggle the work to meet Grubb & Ellis|New Mexico’s schedule and communicated promptly. “We are extremely grateful for her superb service and flexibility,” Amber said.

Justine Meehan of Wells Fargo Business Banking and Diana Stoneberger of Fidelity National Title closed a loan together for the construction of the Fan Tang Asian Restaurant in Nob Hill. The client was Justine’s and she referred him to Diana as the escrow officer on the transaction.

Jane Pilger, Grubb & Ellis|New Mexico and Debbie Dupes, CBRE, recently signed a 6,000 SF lease for Walgreens’ District Office at 7770 Jefferson NE. Walgreens is represented nationally by CBRE. Tiffany Gaede’s company, AIC Construction, is completing the tenant finish for occupancy mid-November.

Natalie Leathers, Cauwels & Stuve, and Debbie Dupes, CBRE, recently completed a three-year renewal for Schneider Electric at 6001 Indian School Road. Schneider Electric is represented nationally by CBRE.

In September, Kathy Gallegos with IronStone Bank and Martha Carpenter of NAI Maestas & Ward closed a deal for $550,000. Martha also closed a deal with Diana Stoneberger of Fidelity National Title worth $2 million.

Michelle Dux of Service Master Performance has been honing her “Social Media” skills since July and has a big thank you for Stephanie Skaggs of Asset Financing, who provided assistance. “Stephanie has taken me to the next level!” said Michelle. “Stephanie is always there to provide information and support.”

Member SpotlightMarguerite Haverly, Senior Associate, Grubb & Ellis New Mexico

How did you get started in the business? I got started in commercial real estate brokerage when I moved to Albuquerque in mid-2007. Albuquerque is such a unique market that is still in growth mode and, as someone new to this area, I was determined to participate in this growth. Commercial real estate was that opportunity and Grubb & Ellis has provided me with an incredible platform from which to do so. For example, earlier this year we completed lease negotiations for Wayland Baptist University to expand and relocate its Albuquerque Campus to the Uptown area. We also recently represented two new restaurants to the area: Desert Fish and Jazzbah. If you could do anything else what would you do and why? Prior to joining Grubb & Ellis, I worked for an interior design firm in Atlanta, GA and managed the firm’s model home merchandising division. I must admit that I truly do enjoy interior design – especially working with fabrics and furnishings. Design is something that has been a part of my life since I was young. What is the most challenging aspect of your business? Real estate is our business and PEOPLE play a large part in that. Today, more than ever, it is important to understand your client’s objectives. In your spare time, what do you love to do? I have already mentioned that I love interior design - part of that love is the need for me to have a creative outlet. Since moving to New Mexico, as many people know, I have started making jewelry, and while I have not had a lot of time to devote to this lately, it is a pastime that I really enjoy. Can you tell us why you continue to be a member of CREW NM and help with Community Outreach? Our local CREW chapter is such a diverse group of people that I have enjoyed getting know and have enjoyed working with. I value the relationships that I have made -- and the deals that I am able to get done -- with these women. The Outreach program, aside from being rewarding in and of itself, has been a great way to get to know other CREW members who also care about giving back to the community.

A relative newcomer to Albuquerque, Marguerite has still had quite an impact on commercial real estate. Earlier this year she was promoted to Senior Associate at Grubb & Ellis|New Mexico. In 2010 she was honored for facilitating the largest number of lease transactions within Grubb & Ellis. She is a graduate of Tulane University’s A.B. Freeman School of Business and is married to attorney Brian Haverly.

In July, CREW NM’s Lunch & Learn event featured Trish Hoffman of the Albuquerque Police Department talking about common sense self-defense techniques for women. Hoffman, who has 16 years in law enforcement, spoke to about 20 CREW NM members in the conference room at CBRE and said most attacks on women are perpetrated by someone the victim knows. Women, more so than men, must be constantly vigilant when out in public. “Don’t be a target. Don’t be vulnerable. Look behind you and look around,” Hoffman said.

She offered several measures women can take to prevent being attacked while shopping, walking to and from stores, pumping gas, at the bank, or while crossing parking lots. Parking lots can be especially hazardous because an attacker can strike and wrestle a woman into a car before bystanders can react.

Here are some of Hoffman’s other do’s and don’ts:See danger, sense danger, and do something about it.•If accosted, fight, fight, fight. Don’t get into a car or a van without a struggle.•Leave your strong side hand open when walking. Carry your keys, your purse or •cell phone in your weak side hand. If you are right-handed, your strong side is your right one, if you are left-handed, your strong side is your left one.Avoid talking on your cell phone. It signals to a possible attacker that you aren’t •paying attention and makes you a potential victim. If attacked, do what you have to do to get to a safe place. Carry pepper spray, a •small knife or other self defense item in your purse or pocket. Use it.Change your routine. Leave or return from home, the gym or office at different •times and by different routes.Change your stance. Walk with your head up and look ready for anything. You •won’t look like a victim.

FREE 8-week self-defense classes for women are offered by APD throughout the year on Monday nights.

Ann Lerner, who heads up the City of Albuquerque’s Film Office, was the speaker for CREW NM’s regular August meeting. Lerner spoke with us about what movie and TV production in New Mexico means for our state, and in particular Albuquerque as it relates to jobs and income to the City and State. With Albuquerque’s urban cityscapes and suburban small-town looks, prairie land and forest, old Victorian homes and ultra-modern dwellings, the city can easily double as Anywhere, USA. In fact, MovieMaker Magazine ranked Albuquerque at the #1 “Best place in America to make movies and to call home.” A division of the City of Albuquerque’s Economic Development Department, Ann offers free dependable assistance to filmmakers.

If you are interested in being an extra, Ann offered a few tips:

Q. Do you need to be beautiful to be an extra? •A. No, movie extras come in all ages, sizes, shapes, colors •and looks. Q. If I can’t swim, but they are looking for swimmers, •should I say I can in hopes of getting the part? A. No, don’t lie. •Q. Can I talk to the director/lead actor/actress/ or can I ask •for autographs? A. Never! •

On September 12th, approximately 20 CREW members displayed their cooking skills and hosted a Mexican Fiesta for the residents of Casa Esperanza (House of Hope). Tacos, beans, rice, homemade guacamole and salsa, along with a

few other Mexican dishes were served to families of cancer patients undergoing treatment at nearby hospitals. One resident we spoke with was there with his wife who was undergoing cancer treatment and his father who was having bypass surgery…however, just that day his wife had received very good news about her prognosis…and they were ready to celebrate!

Outreach Committee members Jasmin Sanchez and Ann Jarrell coordinated the event and it was amazing how 20 women worked so well together in one kitchen! As we left, the residents expressed their sincere gratitude with a huge applause. Casa Esperanza expressed their gratitude for “such a lively bunch of women” and for the wonderful meal that was served.

A huge thank you to the Outreach Committee and the members who were able to participate! CREW Members Lia Armstrong and Justine Meehan are both Board Members of Casa Esperanza. www.casaesperanzanm.org

On August 3rd, 24 CREW members gathered at the Albuquerque Public Schools Title 1 offices to fill backpacks that went to students before the start of school on August 16. The backpacks were handed out to students from kindergarten through the 12th grade. APS Title 1 students receive services through the Title I Homeless Project. Four CREW NM members at a time worked one-hour shifts to sort supplies and stuff backpacks with notebooks, rulers, pens, colored pencils and other necessities for the school year.

“Welcome to the Power Center” was the theme for this year’s 2011 CREW National Convention held at the Gaylord Convention Center in Washington D.C, and what a powerful convention it was! Joining me at the Convention from CREW NM were Kathleen Gallegos, Martha Carpenter and Sherry Read. The Convention got off to a great start on Thursday, September 15th with a networking wine and hors d’oeurves partyfollowedbyaLiveandSilentAuctiontobenefittheCREWFoundation.CREWNew Mexico’s Nambe auction items were a big hit! CREW Network did an incredible job with their choice of very poignant speakers throughout the Convention. Sheila Johnson, co-founder of BET (Black Entertainment Television) and President of WNBA’s Washington Mystics, told an amazing and inspiring story about her rise to the top, the challenges she faced along the way and how she continues to advance her career while giving back to the community. Another speaker who was both educational and on point (considering the challenges facing the U.S. economy) was Chief Economist Diane Swonk. Two other noteworthy speakers were Norah O’Donnell, contributor to 60 Minutes, and author Andrew Ross Sorkin, of “Too Big To Fail. There were also many great breakout sessions including sessions ranging from commercialrealestateupdates, financingtransactions, healthcarereformandtheimpact of real estate to interpreting the new lease accounting rules and a session on women on public company boards. Aside from all the great programming, this Convention was a great opportunity to meet CREW members from all over the US and Canada. I left the convention with many business cards and new friends, some of whom I hope to see when Albuquerque hosts the Winter Leadership Development & Council Meeting this February! A very special THANK YOU to Campbell & Wells, P.A. and Insight Construction who are CREW’s 2011 Scholarship Sponsors!
