GENTLE REMINDERS Our focus is now on building class routines and school community. The safety and well-being of our students is of highest concern and we need your cooperation and support. Please be mindful of:

● When your child is going to be late/absent, please call the automated Safe Arrival system before 9:00am to ensure that it is registered on time.

● When picking up children after school, please wait outside the school doors. ● When picking up children during school hours, please continue to communicate this in your

child’s agenda and be mindful of the time, NOT between 2:45 – 3:30 pm, as it is disruptive to student learning. This is a busy time for staff and students as they prepare for dismissal.

● When crossing, please use the designated crosswalks. Please do not run between busses to exit and please use the school parking lot or Kiss N Ride.

● When dropping off children, please use the Kiss and Ride Lane. The parking lot behind the Kiss and Ride Lane is closed as there is no supervision.

● Do not drop your children off before supervision begins at 8:55.. Thank you for your assistance in our efforts to keep staff, students, and parents/guardians safe.

Congratulations/Felicitations to our winners for the

NEWS FROM THE GYM LOCKER

* Activities Club: Our grade 1 and 2 Activities Club was a very popular and well attended

club this term. Over 200 students participated in equipment games and activities in the gym at recess times. A special thank you goes out to Mrs. Sakai for coordinating the schedule and all of the fun play for our students. Bravo! * Congratulations to the Credit Valley soccer team who played very well and finished in second place at the Thomas Street Indoor Tournament on December 9th, 2016. Our season began in September, and we alternated between indoor and outdoor matches. Thank you

to all grade 5 students for playing soccer this fall! * Grade 5 Skating: Our grade 5's (and Mrs. Whyte's grade 4/5 class) will be skating at Vic Johnson Arena on January 18th and January 31st/2017. Permission forms were sent home and should have been returned to Credit Valley prior to leaving for Holidays. In addition to their skates, students will need to wear approved helmets (no bike helmets, please) on the ice. If your child is renting skates and helmets, they will be delivered either one day prior or on the morning of the skate day by Canadian Skate Rent. * United Way '21" Basketball: Interested grade 4's will be playing the staff in a fun, basketball shooting challenge called, "21" on January 19th, 2017 (the first player who scores 21 points wins their match and plays a new opponent). Permission forms will be sent home in January and we are asking players to donate a loonie or toonie (optional) to help benefit the United Way of Peel. *Running Shoes Reminder: Now that the winter weather has arrived, we'd like to remind families to please ensure that your child wears running shoes/sneakers to gym to allow for safe participation. Sandals, slip-ons, boots and hard soled shoes are not safe and acceptable footwear for the gym. Thank you for your consideration.

From the Library Learning Commons Thank you to everyone who visited our Book Fair. Your support is greatly appreciated. So far this year students have checked out 8,280 books! WOW, that is awesome, that’s

1,440 more than last year. The Mitten Tree Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Mitten Tree and a big THANK YOU to the students in Grade 1 who worked very hard organizing the mitten and hat drive, making posters and writing announcements. All the hats and mittens have been donated to the Eden Food Bank to support families in need in our community.

A random selection process system is used to identify students gaining entrance into the grade 1 FI program. All students who apply by the deadline will be assigned a rank using a computerized random selection process. Once students have been assigned to all available spots, remaining students will be placed, again in rank order, on the school's waitlist. Each school has its own waitlist. Conference helps parents make a difference in numeracy and beyond The Peel District School Board is hosting its annual parent conference on Saturday, April 1, 2017, at Mississauga Secondary School in Mississauga. Once again, the conference will focus on numeracy—25 out of 60 workshops help with math. Parents will still have the opportunity to attend workshops on other topics, including literacy, special education and science. This free learning event is open to Peel parents of students at all grade levels.

Registration opens Feb.1, 2017 Stay up-to-date! For more information, look out for the conference flyer at your child's school or visit www.peelschools.org/parents/conference. Winter bus safety The following winter school bus safety tips will help to keep your child safe throughout the winter months.

● Allow extra time to get to your bus stop. ● Wear bright clothing so the bus can see you in the early morning and late evening. ● Stand away from where the bus stops. Buses need extra room to stop when there is

snow and ice. ● Use the handrail when boarding or exiting the bus to prevent slipping on wet or icy

steps or road surfaces. ● Dress properly—winter clothing, hats, and boots will keep you warm. ● Don't throw snowballs at the bus or other children waiting for the bus. ● Don't slide on the snow or ice patches in driveways or on the street. ● Don't push or shove around the bus. Someone could fall down on the ice and get hurt. ● On very rare occasions, buses are late because of weather conditions or mechanical

problems. Talk to your child about what to do if the bus is late. Here are some suggestions:

● When possible, wait with your child for the bus. ● Make sure your child knows a phone number where he can reach you or another

trusted adult. ● Teach your child how and where to get help. Talk to your child about what a "safe"

stranger is. ● Help your child set up a bus stop buddy system so your child has someone to wait with for the

bus.

Help your family stay warm this winter Peel Public Health recommends the following cold weather guidelines for preventing cold-weather injuries:

1. Reduce amount of time children (grade 8 and under) spend outdoors when the temperature is –20 degrees Celsius or colder, with or without the wind chill.

2. Keep children indoors when the temperature is -25 degrees Celsius or colder, with or without wind chill. Some medical conditions may increase sensitivity to cold. Parents should consult their physician (Source: Environment Canada).

3. Allow indoor breaks if children say they are feeling cold or during extreme temperatures. 4. Ensure children are dressed warmly, covering exposed skin: insulated boots, winter weight coats, mittens,

hats, neck warmers. 5. Change wet clothing or footwear immediately. 6. Although these conditions are unlikely to occur during the school day, ensure that all staff are able to

recognize and treat symptoms of frostbite and hypothermia. Given plenty of warm fluids to prevent dehydration.

7. When children are outside, be watchful for shivering or signs of numbness in faces, ears, hands or feet.

8. Educate children in dealing with cold weather: drinking plenty of fluids, dressing warmly, and recognizing signs of cold injury.
