Especia l ly in the Nor th where the class ic r igorous and s imple archi tec ture is charac ter ized by the f low of l ight , and where , among other s , the tr adi t ion wi thin des ign is based on the play of l ight . At the same t ime hal f of the hour s in a year are dark , and therefore many Nordic archi tec ts and des igner s are increas ingly mak ing use of the poss ib i l i t ies , wi th in the recent developments of in -novat ive l ight ing solu t ions . As an example , they use i l luminated sur faces and ef fec t s in ways that s imul taneously ref lec t s today ’s l i fes t y le , emphas ize or ig ina l ideas and set t les into the Nordic tr a-di t ion and ident i t y. Today compared to ear l ier, i t a lso might be the user s of the archi tec ture , the urban space and des igns that are taken into cons iderat ion . The solu t ions , including the l ight , have to be meaning fu l to people and communicate exper iences and atmospheres . The use of colored l ight is one of the re lat ive ly new oppor tuni t ies implemented in the Nordic countr ies , and exac t ly colored l ight is an excel lent tool to create scenes and ef fec t s , which for example can be adapted to speci f ic events .

Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam chose LED l ight ing as it brings out the unique fea-tures of each work of ar t , out l ining the visual contrast , and the atmosphere in the paint ings . The l ight ing design is made with a strong focus on the visitor experience and the conservat ion of the ar tworks. The ideal solut ion should create ef fects and visual contrasts that would imitate the color rendit ion of natural dayl ight as far as possible .

ISS moved into their new global Headquar-ters in Søborg, Denmark, in the fall of 2013. The building has been redesigned to suit the needs of ISS. One of the central elements in the new HQ is the ISS University. The walls of the round room are covered by Philips Luminous Textiles panels. The panels are showing ISS´ services and brand identity. It attracts attention and leaves visitors with a memorable impression of ISS.

Every year, VIPs and members of the Royal family at tend the spectacular Dubai World Cup at the Meydan Race Course. The VIPs and the royal family access the race course by crossing a special route over the Mey-dan VIP Bridge and its extension, the Royal Bridge. In order to elevate the prominence of this route and to create an architectural landmark in the city, i t was decided that the bridge should be i l luminated. The i l luminated bridge , seen by mil l ions of vis itors , creates a spectacular display of blue r ibbons against the night sky, and serves as a special VIP en-trance for the royal family and their guests .

Parking lots rarely get much attention, however in Finland it is worth making an except ion. In Tampere which is located almost 180 km from Helsink i , there is a park ing lot that has re-ceived two awards for design and ease of use . The focus within the design has been for the l ight to be both funct ional and decorat ive .The two diverse awards also emphasize the uni-f icat ion of funct ional ity and aesthet ics in the project . One award is from European Park ing Associat ion and the other is the Finnish l ight-ing price; Valosta Award, where P-Hämppi won the prize for best indoor l ight ing project .

Grass LED does more than jus t i l l uminate – the f ixture emphasizes the green concept of the area with its organic look and low energy consumption. Stavanger Forum is situated close to the water and characterized by strong westerly winds. All f ixtures have been posit ioned in one direct ion so that they “bend” by the wind and give the impression of them being sculptures , blending in natural ly in the area .

The Be l l a Sk y Comwel l Hote l , located in Copenhagen, Denmark , is not only an archi-tectural ly beaut i ful hotel; i t is also one of the largest in Scandinavia . In order to draw at-tent ion to the new bui lding , the bui lding was f loodlit af ter dark , to temporar i l y i l l uminate the exter ior o f the hote l . The hotel chose to have the f ixtures display six colors . Each color was displayed for 30 seconds , with a seven second transit ion to the next color in the sequence.

As the largest and newest indoor sta-dium in Sweden, Friends Arena required a l ight ing design that would highl ight its substant ial structure and complement its eco-fr iendly goals . A par t of that expe-rience is the l ight ing , which provides a visual spectacle for guests to admire be-fore they even walk through the doors. Color schemes and light shows can easily synchronize with whatever is occurring at the arena . For example , the l ights can coordinate with the colors of opposing football teams that are playing at the arena. On nights when no events are scheduled, the arena of fers a basic , sof t l ight ing scheme.

Schougens Bridge leads traf f ic from Östra Förstads-gatan in towards Drott ing torget in central Malmö. The City of Malmö wanted to improve traf f ic safety and increase the security of those crossing Schougens Bridge. They wanted energy-ef f ic ient l ight ing which would meet the i l luminat ion requirements whilst also having a long service l i fe . The City of Malmö wanted an unobtrusive instal lat ion on the bridge , which is 34 m long and 18 m wide. They wanted uni form i l lumina-t ion using white l ight ing and good color reproduct ion. The possibi l i t ies for modif y ing the exist ing instal lat ion were l imited. I t is an unobtrusive , aesthet ical ly pleas-ing l ight ing solut ion which completely blends in with its environment , even during dayt ime hours.

The l ight source is hidden behind an opal cone.

Søndermarken has for more than 150 years been one of the most popular gathering and act iv ity areas in Copenhagen and Frederiksberg. There was a request for the project to integrate intel l igent l ight to make it extra fun to run or walk the route. This would give the runners an individual , colored l ight to fol low, as it moves around the path at the speed rate desired by the person. The white LED-l ight gives a natural and precise per-cept ion of the surroundings during the dark hours , and at the same t ime it s igni f icant ly reduces the pow-er consumption and the carbon emission.
