Chief Executive’s WelcomeWelcome to the ACOSVO 2015 Annual Conference this year centring on

the theme of, ‘Creative Leadership – Innovate! Integrate! Inspire!’

As leaders we are well aware of the need to be able to respond to complex situations and be adaptable and resilient to change. What is perhaps more challenging is the ability to recognise, promote and utilise creativity within your organisation.

Being a creative leader does not mean having all the ideas, but rather having the ability to develop a culture where everyone can contribute and feel that they’re valued. Creating this environment and building the relationships that encourage and nurture this creativity can be a much bigger shift than first anticipated.

This years’ conference is chaired by ACOSVO member and Scottish Sport Association Chief Executive, Kim Atkinson and speakers include: Josh Littlejohn - Founder of not-for-profit enterprise Social Bite; Chief Executive of Creative Scotland, Janet Archer;

Deputy Chief Constable Stephen Allen who is currently seconded to the Scottish Government to develop their collaborative leadership work; and among many other accolades, Founder of Dare2Lead and winner

of ‘Outstanding Youth of the World 2013’, John Loughton.

With plenty of opportunities to network with peers and share ideas, this conference promises to showcase examples of good practice in order to ensure your organisation is always in a position to maximise its potential and performance.

As ACOSVO celebrates its 15th year, we would

like to thank all our funders, especially the Third Sector Unit at Scottish Government; our supporters; our Board of Directors; and most importantly our members who have worked with us throughout this period. You continue to

inspire us to excellent third sector leadership in Scotland and a thriving sector that is well led and able to perform to its full potential for people and communities across Scotland.

Pat ArmstrongChief Executive, ACOSVO

Being a creative leader does not mean having all the ideas, but rather having the

ability to develop a culture where everyone can contribute and feel that they’re valued.

Developing and harnessing an effective Board

Discussion will focus on the leadership required by Chairs and Trustees in providing leadership within a Board - to the CO, to the organisation, to the staff, so that the relationship with the Board works best for the organisation. Real examples will add context. Participants are encouraged to discuss their own experiences, relationships and best practice.

MemberStephanie FraserChief Executive at Bobath, Scotland

Differentiating your organisation from others – is your USP fit for purpose?

In commercial marketing, defining a product’s USP (unique selling point) is crucial to business planning and development. Do/should charities think of themselves and their services in this way? What is the point of a USP for a charity? Does your organisation have a USP? Is a USP only for fundraising or can it define design of service delivery? During the discussion participants are encouraged to create a USP. We will discuss strengths and weaknesses and how these might change over time.

3

MemberFraser Hudghton National Manager at Institute of Fundraising Scotland

Charity fundraising - the way forward

In light of recent fundraising reviews, what should charities do to maintain public trust whilst ensuring income to meet beneficiary needs? Do novel means of fundraising offer the best chance to secure a solid foundation for your charity? Will charities have to rewrite their fundraising strategies? If you have suddenly had to be creative when it comes to your organisation’s fundraising, and have had to learn fast, this opportunity to meet with peers to discuss how best to face the future is for you.

Stepping up: an exploration of the challenges and opportunities of leading an organisation for the first time

Join me for a discussion around being in a visible position of leadership for the first time and how to manage the rollercoaster ride of emotions this invokes. How can leaders best support each other within the third sector so that stepping up to a leadership role isn’t a daunting and lonely experience?

Encouraging Intrapreneurship and Innovation

“Intrapreneurs can transform an organisation more quickly and effectively than others because they are self-motivated freethinkers, masters at navigating around bureaucratic and political inertia.” - Harvard Business ReviewIntrapreneurship is used by many leading companies to increase impact and sustainability. It is a process that encourages creativity, develops and tests new ideas, producing valued innovation. Intrapreneurs are increasingly seen as amongst the most valuable asset a large organisation can have, helping it prepare for the future. The Lens is supporting Intrapreneurship in mission driven organisations across Scotland. If you see intrapreneurship as something you want to develop, this discussion is for you.

360 Appraisal for Leadership

Very often 360 appraisals are helpful in identifying strengths and weaknesses as perceived by our peers, direct reports, our managers or indeed our customers. However, when it comes to the behaviours associated with good leadership, are they as effective? It’s a very sensitive and subjective subject – should you take these views into account? What if the people filling in the survey don’t know what good leadership looks like? In this table discussion we will review one particular tool that purports to overcome this problem and provides valuable input regardless of the perception of the assessor. We will then discuss some of the issues, pros and cons of this approach generally.

Creativity takes courage: Telling the story of who you are with your whole heart, positively impacts your bottom line – so let’s get personal

Creativity is about originality of thought. The journey of experimenting with new thought often means stepping into the unknown – this takes courage. In an increasingly business focussed third sector where leaders are encouraged to achieve more with less, the pressures of self-sustainability can grow fear, shame and isolation - ultimately breaking connections with those around us. This discussion will take you through the steps to connect with purpose and meaning to produce a creative drive your organisation and team will embrace... and if this sounds ‘fluffy’ be aware that ‘Resonate Together’ is self-funded, expanding and is energising community momentum with those who are sharing the journey!

Benefits vs Risks of employing young people new to the workforce

There are risks for all businesses but are they risks the third sector can easily take? What does new, young blood bring to you and your team? Can you afford it? Do you need to train? Do you have time? If you’ve already taken on young employees what are you doing to inspire them, to retain them, to maintain their interest and enthusiasm? How are they integrating into your team? Could you be doing more and gaining more? I look forward to sharing my own experiences and some case studies with you.

Change Management or Change Leadership – how leaders creatively engage their teams to deliver change in an organisation

“Leadership is about managing change. Things change and you get creative.” Change is constant in all organisations, whether it be a result of internal or external forces. Yet many leaders see change as a top down function rather than operationalising the requirements for change. Change Leadership requires absolute clarity in purpose, focus and action across all levels of an organisation. In this session Michelle will introduce a simple model which can help leaders review their change approach and discuss ways this is best delivered.

Innovation and inspiration from an unusual source

Tax is regarded as complex and burdensome so opportunities to minimise liability are frequently overlooked by Third Sector (TS) organisations. Using everyday language, we will explore how tax rules can help TS organisations increase income, make cost savings and improve their position, highlighting where/how the Charity Tax Group is improving the system for TS organisations. Your attendance may help shape the future of tax in the UK for the TS and hopefully save your organisation money.

11

Strategic PartnerEline LofgrenInvestment ManagerTilney Bestinvest

A more creative approach to charity reserves

Discussion on reserves is often reduced to a box-ticking exercise, only dealt with alongside annual accounts. Trustees have a tendency to adopt a conservative attitude, preferring preservation over active management, whilst grant-makers prefer funds to be put to direct use. The discussion will tackle issues such as how much should be held and what are the most important decisions to consider. Communicating the purpose of reserves is important - charities should not feel pressured to defend their existence, but be inspired to explain their purpose.

Strategic PartnerGareth McKnight,Managing Director & Wendy Meiklejohn Associate Director, HR Projects at Navigator Employment Law Ltd

Make change happen - lead effectively to unlock creativity and innovation in the workplace

Creative leaders achieve change through promoting a shared vision, inspiring and influencing employees and the wider organisational culture. This discussion will consider:• whether creativity today is an optional extra or a strategic necessity;• the barriers to creative leadership (including our own!) and how these

can be tackled; • shared experiences and thoughts on what makes an effective and

creative leader.

“Effing the ineffable?”* How does your organisation encourage and nurture creativity without measuring it to death?

Creativity is becoming prominent as an organisational advantage – Google/IDEO set benchmarks for groovy offices with phone boxes, slides and ping pong tables. The challenges facing public services in Scotland can’t be met without creative collaboration – how do we do it when resources are tight? Does your organisation’s culture and practice encourage creativity? The Scottish Government’s Creativity Team will share some of its work on creating cultures of innovation, sharing tools and methodologies, and looking to you for inspiration!*“Let’s think the unthinkable, let’s do the undoable. Let’s prepare to grapple with the ineffable itself, and see if we may not ‘eff it’ after all.” ― Douglas Adams, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency
