Annual Report 2017humanities.org
Creating public spaces
where diverse ideas and
dialogue flourish
Letter from our Executive DirectorDear friends,
I am writing to you from a coffee shop, next to which sits an inconspicuous piece of the Berlin Wall—a souvenir from a different time and place that serves as a warning to us today. This battered, spray-painted chunk of concrete is a monument to the great—and desperate—lengths some in power will go to build physical and ideological barriers in an attempt to divide and separate us. In America’s current cultural moment, the need to bridge our differences is perhaps more profound than it’s been since the Civil War.
Humanities Washington strengthens our communities by creating “public squares” where people exchange ideas and explore and appreciate the full range of perspectives and experiences of their neighbors. These interactions connect us to our community. They help us develop a sense of the common good and build social trust, making it possible to discover shared solutions to tough problems.
More and more of you are hungry for these kinds of opportunities to come together with your neighbors, to engage in positive dialogues, and to explore new ideas. In 2017 our total program audience increased by an incredible 30%. I encourage you to invite a friend to a Humanities Washington event. And please also let us know what social and cultural issues are top of mind for you and your community. We are inspired by your passion and we look forward to serving even more of you in 2018 and beyond.
The Berlin Wall has now been gone for longer than it stood. Let it be a tombstone on a history of divisiveness, and let us look toward a future that celebrates our unique perspectives, traditions, and experiences.
In gratitude,
Julie ZieglerExecutive Director

We show up where people already gather, partnering with hundreds of organizations and
communities across Washington State to deliver our programs. These partnerships form
the backbone of our work—without them we simply would not have the reach and
impact that we do.
