CREATING AN OUTLINE FOR AN ESSAY

Step 1: Plan it out.

Identify the main points of the unit that will support the essay.

Where would you find this information? Organize those points so that they make

sense to you. Can you group any together into a larger

point?

Step 2: Flesh it out.

Put points into an outline form: Make them into a clear, 1 sentence summary.

Now find supporting details Look through notes and Anticipation Guide Find at least two summary sentences or

detail sentences that you can use to explain your topic

Fill those in.

Step 3: Knit it together.

Look over the outline. Think of how each piece will fit together

to help answer your essential question. Write a transition sentence to connect

each main point to the next (make this the third point under each heading).
