You already know this…If it takes 2 cups of cheese for half a pizza,

How much cheese will it take for a whole pizza?

Think about it……

Cups of cheese 2 ?

pizza ½ 1

x 2

x 2

Cups of cheese 2 4

pizza ½ 1

2 1

Look for a pattern in the following problems.

Divide this

Cups of cheese 2 ?

pizza 1/3 1

x 3

x 3

Cups of cheese 2 6

pizza 1/3 1

Look for the pattern.

Divide this

Cups of cheese 1 ?

pizza 1/5 1

x 5

x 5

Cups of cheese 1 5

pizza 1/5 1

Do you see a pattern?

The pattern lies with what we multiply by to get the solutions.

How is the number we multiply by related to the fraction we are dividing by?

The number we multiply by is the RECIPROCAL of the fraction we are dividing by.

Reciprocal

a number that you multiply by so the result equals 1.

The easiest way to find the reciprocal of a fraction is to just flip the fraction over.

1/2 X 2 = 1

1/4 X 4 = 11/3 X 3 = 12/5 X 5/2 = 1

Determine the algorithm

• What are the “rules” for dividing fractions?

– Take the reciprocal of the fraction you are dividing by

– And multiply
