Box Hill is best known for its cultural diversity with its strong specialisation in Asian cuisine and retail. It is a bustling centre with shops, offices, housing, hospitals, education, transport and services.

is BOOmING

6

BOX HILL

It is a popular destination for business in Melbourne’s east and includes a bustling central business district with approximately 146,000 square metres of office space.

Recent developments in Box Hill:

• $120 million development at 913 Whitehorse Road, Box Hill will be the new home of the Australian Tax Office (pictured opposite page). Accommodating approximately 1250 staff, the building will also include retail space and 300 car parking spaces for tenants and the public.

• The $447.5 million redevelopment of the Box Hill Hospital has seen the construction of a brand new development containing all acute clinical services, designed to accommodate future growth in Melbourne’s East.

• Aqualink $30+ million redevelopment is one of the most modern and innovative aquatic and leisure centres in Australia.

In a report commissioned by Council, it was highlighted that ‘Box Hill is firmly established as the pre-eminent growth centre for Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. This growth is spread over housing, jobs, health, education, retail and commercial development’.

Box Hill is a success and could be even better.

Box Hill transport interchange was opened 30 years ago and it is time to make it better.

Whitehorse Council is working with the local community and businesses to build support for an overhaul of the transport interchange.

People travel to Box Hill every day to visit the renowned market and restaurants, to work, to visit the Box Hill Hospital or Epworth Hospital, to improve their knowledge and skills at Box Hill Institute and Deakin University or just to enjoy the vibrant community.

The feedback that Council has received from residents, public transport users and business is clear. The interchange is hard to use, especially when changing from trams to buses or buses to trains. The bus interchange is old and needs better places to wait. Disability and pram access is poor.

30 years after it was built we can do better.

KEY FACTS ABOUT

BOX HILL • Box Hill is the most significant activity centre in Melbourne’s east

• Well established with diversified growth in jobs, health, education, retail and housing

• 26% population growth in five years

• 2300 new dwellings approved in the last four years

• 26,000 jobs and growing

• Over 60,000 students

• Busiest transport hub in Melbourne’s east

• 20,000 train passengers every day + tram + bus commuters

BUILDING AN EVEN BETTER

BOX HILL

Down to Business Edition 3 2014

“Box Hill Central is an impressive complex combining retail shops and commercial office services with a transport centre serviced by trains, buses, taxis and private cars – all under the one roof.”

WHY

BOX HILL Transport Interchange needs renewal

• 30 years old and out-dated

• Substantial growth projected in use

• Difficult and time consuming interchanges from bus to train or tram

• Poor disability and pram access

• Train, tram and buses poorly connected

• Bus station is cold and windswept

HOW DO WE BUILD AN EVEN BETTER

BOX HILL Over the next year, further community and stakeholder consultation is planned to work together towards a better Box Hill.

• Whitehorse Council is working cooperatively with business, land owners, government and the community

• Harness commercial and residential development to renew the transport interchange and surrounding area

• Develop a business case to present to the Victorian Government

Fixing the transport interchange is the last big step in the renewal of Box Hill. It would capitalise on the significant investment in new residential and commercial development, the redevelopment of the hospital and the improvement of popular leisure facilities and public spaces.

Over the next year we will be talking to the community and working towards a better Box Hill.

Box Hill is firmly established as the pre-eminent growth centre for Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.

Whitehorse Tertiary Business Skills program 2014Whitehorse City Council and Deakin University’s Faculty of Business and Law recently celebrated the completion of the Whitehorse Tertiary Business Skills program for 2014.

Participating students and businesses were acknowledged and presented with

certificates at Deakin University’s new Corporate Centre located at the Burwood

Campus.

The program’s objective was to provide mutual benefit to both students and

local businesses. For businesses, they could access the skills and abilities of

the students studying within the Faculty of Business and Law, to deliver

valuable outcomes. For the students, they received an opportunity for hands-on

and practical workplace experience in an area relevant to their tertiary studies.

Businesses were able to specify the types of skills they sought, with effort made

to link them with students that possessed those specific skills. Because the

work formed part of the students’ curriculum, participating businesses were

not required to pay any remuneration expenses.

Box Hill Institute:

Council is conducting a stocktake of all Council-provided business bins between October and December 2014. As part of the stocktake, Council will visit businesses and apply stickers to all Council- provided bins.

The visits will also assist Council in planning the features of the waste and recycling

service offered to businesses in future.

The first step of the process commenced in October with a survey sent to businesses’

street addresses, addressed to the business manager. If your business uses Council-

provided bins and you did not receive a survey please contact customer service on

9262 6333 to arrange a visit to your business.

From July 2015, Whitehorse City Council’s rubbish and recycling trucks will only empty

stickered Council-provided bins.

Further communications about plans for Council’s business waste and recycling service

will be forwarded to your business’s nominated contact after the stocktake is completed.

A-B ProgramAre you a tradesperson, or do you know

of one, who is thinking about, or has

recently started a new business?

For tradespeople to operate a successful business, they need more than just hands-on, technical capabilities. They require business management skills to not only grow the business, but to navigate the sometimes burdensome array of regulations, as well as manage various obstacles that business owners encounter regularly.

Box Hill Institute’s Business Enterprise Centre is designed to help prospective business owners. Their Apprentice to Business Owner Program is designed to help eligible tradespeople in developing their business management skills.

The program is fully funded by the Federal Government and is free for eligible participants.

Terms and conditions do apply. For more information, phone Box Hill Institute Business Enterprise Centre on 8892 2002 or email [email protected] of

Think local and buy local to support businesses in your neighbourhood and boost the local economy this festive season.

The importance of supporting your local businesses can go far beyond the counter transaction. Here are some of the positive differences you can make when you think local and buy local.

• Money circulating throughout the local region can lead to a more prosperous community.

• The convenience of shopping close to home. You may even choose to walk or ride to the shops.

• If local businesses are making good trade, they are more likely to continue to employ local people, keeping jobs within the local community.

• Shopping local can reduce your carbon footprint as you won’t be travelling very far to purchase your goods.

• Having a vibrant, busy, unique shopping strip can have a very positive impact on the character of the local community.

Beginning in 2009, the Think Local Buy Local campaign has made a difference to many local businesses in Whitehorse while helping to improve job security for local employees, generate new employment opportunities and reduce the community’s carbon footprint.

To show your appreciation and support for our local businesses simply look out for the Think Local Buy Local sticker while you are shopping.

Businesses who would like a sticker, can phone Council on 9262 6333.

Whitehorse City Council is an accredited Fair Trade Council and encourages all local businesses to be involved.

Residents and traders can participate by purchasing products with the Fair Trade label as well as supporting organisations that are accredited Fair Trade companies.

Fair Trade is a growing international movement that ensures farmers and producers within poor and developing countries receive a fair price for their produce. The Fair Trade philosophy is not about stopping the sale of non-fair trade products, but increasing the sale of products produced in an ethical and sustainable manner from developing countries.

There are a number of local businesses and organisations that supply and promote Fair Trade products. These businesses are listed in Council’s Fair Trade Guide, which can be found at Council’s Customer Service Centres in Box Hill, Forest Hill and Nunawading.
