Cranbrook’s very own MasterChef Canada contes-tant Danielle Cardozo is hosting a viewing party for the series’ first episode on Monday, Jan. 20 at the Heid

Out Restaurant and Brew-house.

Cardozo, who works as a sous chef at the Heid Out, has made the Top 50 and will appear in at least the opening episodes of the new Canadian series, which will

air on CTV.After deciding to watch

the series at the Heid Out with friends and family, Car-dozo thought she would take it one step further and invite Cranbrook to join in for a viewing party.

“I knew I was going to be serving my signature dish to the public at some point. So I thought, why not serve it up during the show?” said Cardozo.

Her boss, Heid Out co-owner Heidi Romich,

agreed to have the restau-rant host the viewing party.

“I talked to Heidi about airing the show at the restau-rant that week and she was on board. Heidi is a for-ward-thinking business owner and is really looking

at moving forward in the food scene. We thought this would be a great opportuni-ty to try out some dishes that might be new to her pa-trons.”

Elkford’s deer cull has been suspended for one week after the con-tractor was caught trap-ping during daylight hours, in violation of permit specifications.

The permit specifies trapping is to take place in pre-dawn hours.

“We take permit vio-lations very seriously,” said John Krebs, Re-gional Manager, Recre-ational Fisheries and Wildlife Programs, Koo-tenay Boundary Region of Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Re-source Operations. “We suspended the permit yesterday afternoon (January 7) for a period of one week over con-

cerns with the timing of cull operations.

“The Conservation Officer Service will com-plete an investigation to gather information and determine if enforce-ment action is appropri-ate. We will review the suspension in one week to assess next steps.”

The District reported that 10 deer were har-vested on Jan. 6 and 7. All were mule deer in apparently good condi-tion. Two were males and the rest female, with an approximately 50/50 mix of adults and juve-niles. The meat will be processed into ground meat and provided to local food banks.

Fifty years before Jack Kerouac began to travel

across the roads of America, author Louis Hémon was doing the same in Europe.

Born in France in 1880, Hémon preferred a life of rootless wander-ing over the legal studies his parents had planned for him; so he tramped around France and En-gland, supporting him-self by penning newspa-per articles about his journeys.

Feeling he had ex-hausted Europe of any further adventures, Hémon headed to the wilderness of northern Quebec.

Arriving in the Sa-guenay-Lac-Saint-Jean area, Hémon found the ‘habitants’ there out of step with much of the world; a community which felt as discon-

ents’ farm. Her only place in life is to marry a local boy, bear him chil-dren, attend church, and — most importantly — keep the (no longer French but not quite Quebec) traditions alive. Yet hope arrives for her one day in the form of Francois Paradis, a hard-drinking and foul-mouthed outsider who has no time for church or traditions. Francois and Maria fall deeply in love with each other, and he promises to re-turn to her village during the Christmas holidays.

Of course Francois never does return, and Maria is forced to live the bleak life that is ex-pected of her, not the one she wanted. Only later is it revealed that Francois’ body had been found just outside of Maria’s farm. He had indeed come back for her, but froze to death before he made it.

After completing the

novel, Hémon hiked to the closest post office and mailed the manu-script to his publisher in France. Since then, “Maria Chapdelaine” has been translated into 20 languages, gone through 200 separate printings, and has been filmed three times. Un-fortunately, Hémon didn’t live to see any of this. After mailing off the novel, Hémon began the long trek through the Quebec wilderness to get back home, and was struck and killed by a train when he was crossing a set of tracks. This has led to a century of speculation, wonder-ing how he didn’t hear the train in the silence of the wild — was he drunk, was it a suicide, or did something sinis-ter happen to him?

Of more significance may be whether Ker-ouac ever read “Maria Chapdelaine,” or knew of the restless wander-ings of its author. It seems unlikely that the French Canadian com-munity that stayed in Massachusetts would not have been very fa-miliar with a book which described them so expertly — but Ker-ouac, who would list all the books he read at the Lowell Public Library, never mentioned it. nected as he did. The residents there were de-scendants of Quebec residents who had abandoned their farms for a better life in the U.S. — only to return after discovering life there was equally as hard.

Hémon found this community spoke with a peculiar dialect. It was recognizably French Canadian but with a

hint of American from the generation that relo-cated there. (One family who chose to stay in New England were Jack Kerouac’s parents, who raised him in Lowell, Massachusetts. When-ever he felt over-whelmed or stressed, he would unconsciously start speaking in this di-alect, earning him the nickname of “Dumb Ca-nuck.”)

And like Kerouac, Hémon began to write about all those around him in his new home, resulting in the novel “Maria Chapdelaine.” Published in 1913, “Maria Chapdelaine” remains one of the fin-est reflections of Cana-dian life ever written.

Council Procedure BylawAmendment

PUBLIC NOTICEPursuant to the authority of Section 124(3) of the Community Charter, the City of Cranbrook hereby gives notice that it intends to repeal the “City of Cranbrook Council Procedure Bylaw No. 3644, 2009” and amendments, and give consideration to “City of Cranbrook Council Procedure Bylaw No. 3786, 2014”.

The proposed bylaw will change the order of proceedings and business of the Council agendas to enable consideration and give priority to bylaws, new business items and Committee recommendations earlier in the meeting. Minor typographical errors have been corrected and a clause has been added regarding consideration by the Mayor pursuant to the Community Charter.

The Council Procedure Bylaw No. 3786, 2014 may be inspected at City Hall, 40-10th Avenue South, Cranbrook, British Columbia, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, with the exception of statutory holidays from January 7, 2014 to January 17, 2014. For the viewing party, the Heid Out will serve the dish that Car-dozo makes on the show: a pan-seared mi-so-glazed rainbow trout, served with ponzu mushrooms and citrus miso broth.

“I’m looking forward to serving it at the Heid Out on the 20th,” she said.

Because Cardozo plans to watch the show herself that night, she will prepare the Heid Out’s chefs the day be-fore to serve the dish on Monday.

“Though you can guarantee I will be in and out of the kitchen ensuring the dish is just so,” she added. “I’m a bit picky and controlling when it comes to put-ting my name on a dish.”

Everyone who at-tends the viewing party

will also be treated to an “amuse bouche” when they walk through the door.

“Amuse bouche liter-ally means mouth amuser. It is a bite-size sample of a creation made by the chef. So each Monday that we

air the show, customers will be treated to a small sample of a future dish we are interested in in-troducing onto the menu or as a feature dish.”

Cardozo has ar-ranged for two celebrity foodies from Calgary to

make the trip to Cran-brook for the event.

Chris Shaften was a competitor in the third season of Top Chef Can-ada. Dan Clapson is a food writer who co-founded eatnorth.ca, writes for the Food Network and appears

on Global Television.Cardozo said she

met Clapson when she auditioned for Master-Chef in Canada. He was also auditioning, but didn’t make the top 50.

“I am pretty confi-dant it’s not because of lack of personality or

cooking ability. I think he was just a little too connected to the food scene,” said Cardozo.

She met Shaften through Clapson. The pair are best friends.

“I got to know Chris as he told me all about his Top Chef Canada ex-perience. It was nice to listen to someone talk about an experience that I could relate to,” she said.

“I am constantly going to each of them for culinary, promotion-al, and career advice. They’re exceptionally supportive. And they’re really just nice guys.”

A letter from the province looking for comments on expense limits in local govern-ment elections brought up a bit of discussion in council on Monday.

The Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development sent out the letter which included a dis-cussion paper on spending limits for local elections.

Currently in B.C. there is no spending limit.

By contrast, in On-tario the limit for a mayoral candidate is $7,500 plus 85 cents per elector, and $5,000 plus 85 cents per elec-tor for council candi-dates.

Mayor Wayne Stets-ki said the letter and accompanying discus-

sion provided some good points.

“Right now as you know, it is limitless,” Stetski said. “If you wanted to spend $1 million to get yourself elected in a local mu-nicipal election, there is nothing preventing you from doing that currently. Personally, I think this would be a good idea, to put ev-erybody on the same playing field.”

Coun. Gerry Warner wondered whether there were spending limits on the federal electorate.

“Sauce for the goose and sauce for the gan-der,” Warner said. “They are the senior level of government and they should maybe lead by example.”

Coun. Angus Davis said this was a perfect example of govern-

ment run riot. Davis said it was

wrong that the UBCM was partnering with the province to tell mu-nicipalities how to run an election.

“I think that’s wrong,” Davis said. “We’re paying UBCM to represent us in Vic-toria and the provincial government is paying them to represent the government to us. That is lousy.”

Davis said in the Southern Interior over expenditure doesn’t happen.

“I bet you if we all looked at every elec-tion that was held here in the last 50 years you are so close to the bot-tom that it would make your head spin,” he said. “All we need is more government peo-ple telling us what to do. This stinks and I think we should tell

Some Elkford residents do not agree with the District’s choice to exe-cute a deer cull to lower the approxi-mate 78-148 mule deer that are inhab-iting the town limits. Environmental groups are also voicing their concerns.

“The contract violator had killed 10 deer and should not be permitted to continue to get permits. The permit should be revoked permanently!” stat-ed Peter Hamilton, Lifeforce Founda-tion, founding director.

B.C. Deer Protection Coalition are holding a spotlight on the Elkford deer cull, making statements that the cull contractor was killing deer in daylight.

However the District of Elkford feels “the urban deer harvest is pro-ceeding well minus the unfortunate issue with the contractor trapping in the daylight.”

“Unfortunately the contractor did harvest in daylight contrary to the per-mit requirements,” said District CAO Curtis Helgesen. “Due to the extreme cold at the time, the deer were not moving at night and in the daytime they spent less time in the traps. It was felt this was more humane.

“This was an incorrect decision based on the permit requirements, and the District is cooperating with the province as they investigate the issue.”

Any animal cull is controversial as

the District of Elkford is finding out.“The community has mixed feel-

ings,” said Helgesen, “but as before the harvest, the majority appears to be in support of the operation with phone calls and emails of support, while the minority is being more vocal on social media.

“Unfortunately the facts are suffer-ing due to the exaggeration of the is-sues by outside interests, but we are confident that most in Elkford support this operation as being what is best for the urban deer population in the long term.”

The District of Elkford began cull-ing mule deer under the licence is-sued by the B.C. Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Opera-tions.

The license allows the District to kill up to 50 mule deer with the use of a clover trap and bolt gun with several guidelines and legislation attached to the 14 page permit.

As the permit holder, the District must maintain an up-to-date record of the deer harvested. Information re-quired is an ID number, species, date the wildlife was taken, location, gen-der, age, health status and the use of the carcass. A final report must be submitted to the Permit and Authori-zation Service Bureau within 21 days of the permit’s expiry on March 10, 2014.

A Canadian online travel guide has placed Cranbrook in the top three most popular B.C. communities.

This year, Cranbrook placed third in popular B.C. communities, after Victoria in first place, and Courtenay in sec-ond place.

The award is based

on the number of online travellers who visited that community in 2013 on the ehCanadaTravel.com website.

brook RCMP executed a search warrant on a Wallinger Avenue resi-dence Wednesday and arrested a 21-year-old man. Further arrests may be pending after lab tests on an “un-known white substance” found on another man.

Cpl. Chris Newel of the Kimberley detach-ment says that upon ar-rival at the home, seven people were inside.

“A search located a quantity of cocaine and marijuana along with items associated with drug trafficking,” Newel said.

“Police are recom-mending charges of Possession of a Con-trolled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking against a 21-year-old male. An unknown white substance was seized from another male. This will be ana-lyzed and depending on the results further charges may be consid-ered.”

Newel said the indi-vidual was of particular concern to police as they had received re-ports of him selling indi-rectly to young people in the community, cre-ating a considerable risk.

While Newel did not

say what led them to suspect this particular address, he did say that, “We always have to have

something to point us in the right direction, very rare would we ever just start watching a house. “

On the evening of July 17, 2013, our daughter Geneva age 33 finished her 28 month battle with breast cancer at the Cranbrook Regional Hospital. We wish to thank and acknowledge the doctors, nurs-es, and support staff for their excellent care that she received during this very trying time. Thank you for being so caring and thoughtful to our family’s needs.

Most stays in palliative care are fairly brief. Ours, however, started on June 24 and ended on July 17. During this time several things came to our attention which show the lack of foresight and planning on the part of the Cranbrook Regional Hospi-tal, under the Interior Health Authority (I.H.A.).

To be fair, we acknowledge that every-one is doing the best they can with the tools they have in regards to palliative care. This being said, we feel that Cran-brook citizens, Cranbrook Regional Hos-pital and I.H.A. need to have their atten-tion drawn to the following situations.

Cancer patients are valiant and strong but when coming for treatment they have to walk past the palliative care rooms. To them there is hope on one side and fear on

the other, if their treatment fails. This is such a psychological downer at a time when they need to stay positive so that they can continue the fight for their life.

We also feel concerned for the parents and their children in the pediatric ward who are walking past the palliative rooms which are on the same floor. We have asked ourselves what must be going on in the parents and their child’s mind, and is this the best area to have these families walking? It must be difficult for the par-ents to explain who the people are in the palliative rooms.

Also, due to the shortage of long term care beds there were long term care pa-tients parked nearby the nursing station both day and night, which we found taxed the work load of the care staff and didn’t allow them to be focused on palliative patients’ care. We found it puzzling that our seniors are overflowing onto the med-ical/palliative floor when to our knowl-edge there is room for either our seniors or our palliative patients on the fourth floor which is not being used to its full capacity.

There are always growing pains in con-

version from a small hospital to one of re-gional status, and so many people are try-ing to do their best in a challenging situa-tion. Volunteers, committee members of Hospice, and staff are working tirelessly to effect change to help the patients and fam-ily members who are dealing with so much in a time of such great sorrow and stress.

Cranbrook is an exceptional communi-ty when it comes to supporting people and causes. We need to get behind those in the trenches and let them know that they are not alone.

Many communities have a hospice house available to the palliative patient and the family members in achieving end stage life goals. This could be an option other than the hospital and gives a person a third choice if home or hospital care is not an option. There are many medical professionals just waiting to give assis-tance in this area and it is becoming a greater need in your community. Let’s get involved because you never know when you may be facing this journey.

T he winter of 1949-50 was harsh by any

standards. What had been a mild December began to turn as the New Year approached; one foot of snow soon became two while the temperature dropped from -9 F (-23 C) on Jan-uary 1 to -37 F (-38 C) by January 3. The snow continued to fall, even-tually reaching a depth of four-and-a-half feet. Although there was a full moon in early Janu-ary, few ventured out to see it.

And so it was, in the cold, dark, early morn-ing hours of Friday, Jan. 6, that a local freight en-gine pulled out of the CPR yard heading west. Its first destination was the nearby railway sid-ing of Fassiferne, about seven kilometres west of town to await the scheduled passing of passenger train No. 12, heading through Cran-brook from the west.

The train was helped along the climb out of the Cranbrook yard by a “pusher” engine, al-though the term “pull-er” would have been more appropriate as the extra locomotive was at the front of the train. Once the freight was in place along the side track the pusher would be released and return to town.

Arriving at the siding on schedule, trainman Rowan, a six-week grad-uate from “student” to “qualified trainman,” stepped into the black-ness to cut the pusher free and switch the west line. At the same time, trainman Myles closed the rear end switch. The freight train was now safely on the siding with the passenger train cleared to pass on its way into the city.

Myles made his way to the front of the train to join Hutton and Lin-ton in the cab while conductor Larson stayed in the caboose to do paperwork. Rowan entered the engine soon after.

“Is the switch lined up?” asked Linton. “Yes”, replied Rowan.

It was not long before Hutton realized the eastbound train was ap-proaching. He could clearly see the headlight reflecting in the sur-rounding air. Rowan also spotted it and cried,

“Here she comes,” as he jumped down from the cab between the two tracks to spot the pass-ing engine number. Hutton went to the left door of the cab to do the same. He later recalled the approaching head-light “was like the sun shining in my face.”

Passenger train No. 12, approaching from around a sharp curve to the west at a speed of about 35 mph, could see little as the train neared Fassiferne. Fire-man Fortier could not spot the switch lamp nor could he see the switch “target” used to visually designate the switch setting. He was not alarmed until engi-neer Killins suddenly threw the brakes as the switch came into view. Killins had spotted the switch target signaling the wrong direction and hit the brakes about fifty feet away. Then, “I hung on,” Killins stated. Forti-er wasted no time in jumping from the rac-ing engine through a side window.

Something had gone terribly wrong. The heavy passenger train followed the direction of the switch and

plowed into the front of the idle freight locomo-tive, driving itself direct-ly into the freight loco-motive’s oil tank and instantly killing engi-neer Linton. The flam-ing oil forced from the freight locomotive fire-box enveloped train-man Myles as shock waves shattered the boxcars to the rear.

As the passenger train slowly ground to a halt, the body of a bag-gage car behind the en-gine slid off the tracks into a ditch to the left, leaving its wheels on the tracks. A second bag-gage car behind the en-gine landed on the east side of the tracks while a mail car ground relent-lessly forward, eventu-ally coming to rest jut-ting high into the frozen air. It was a rude awak-ening for many of the passengers, among them the Trail Smoke Eaters hockey team travelling to Kimberley for a weekend pair of games. Accompanying the team was their med-ical trainer who imme-diately set the players to work attending to the shocked and injured passengers. Unusual as it may seem, it was nec-essary to awaken pas-sengers at the rear of the train who were com-pletely unaware of the accident.

Fireman Fortier, suf-fering only minor inju-ries, returned immedi-ately to the locomotive to find engineer Killins unharmed but trapped in his seat. Fortier passed him a crowbar

and then rushed to the freight engine where he unsuccessfully attempt-ed to extinguish the flames with a fire extin-guisher. Killins pried himself free and imme-diately went to help pull Myles from the wreck-age and place him in the snow to extinguish the flames. William Myles died on the scene.

Hutton, one moment standing in the doorway with “the sun shining in his face” awoke hanging by his feet from the en-gine, relatively un-scathed. Rowan, on the ground at the time, re-gained consciousness while being tended by a Trail hockey player and was soon removed to the Cranbrook hospital suffering from leg and foot fractures. Medical teams soon arrived from town, having been called from a line tele-phone by conductor Larson immediately fol-lowing the impact. Pas-sengers, none of whom were severely injured, were ferried to town by Star Taxi.

Within the week a Cranbrook coroner’s jury concluded: “We, the jury find ... that the accident resulted from an open switch and we attach negligence on the entire crew of train No. 73 [and further] that the west switch at the Fassiferne siding be re-moved to a site where greater visibility is as-sured.”

And so it was in the cold, dark, early morn-ing hours of Jan. 6, 1950.

Bu� alo Sabres hire Tim Murray away from Senators

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Senators assistant general man-ager Tim Murray has been hired to take over at Buffalo Sabres general manager, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Thursday.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the team has not revealed who they will announce as their new GM at a news conference later in the day.

Murray has spent the past seven seasons working for the Senators, and has 20 years of NHL experi-ence after breaking in as a scout with the Detroit Red Wings in 1993. He is the nephew of Senators general manager Bryan Murray, who has mentored him throughout his career.

Murray emerged as one of four finalists for the job last weekend in newly hired Sabres president Pat LaFontaine’s two-month search to replace Darcy Regier, who was fired in November.

The final step of the process was for the candi-dates to be interviewed by Sabres owner Terry Pegu-la, who was in Buffalo on Wednesday.

Elway has found the right mix of veterans to bolster Broncos’ Super Bowl run

Wes Welker and Louis Vasquez helped transform the Broncos offence into the highest-scoring team in the Super Bowl era, and a bevy of defensive signings helped rescue a unit that was hit hard by injuries and illness.

Vasquez, a fifth-year right guard lured from AFC West rival San Diego, earned All-Pro and Pro Bowl honours after anchoring an offensive line that al-lowed the fewest sacks in the NFL (20) this season and produced a league-high six games without al-lowing a quarterback takedown.

OTTAWA - There’s no “figure” at the Canadian figure skating champi-onships this week.

Skate Canada re-named the event the National Skating Cham-pionships, marking the first time in the event’s 100-year history that “figure” hasn’t appeared in the title.

It’s a marketing move by Skate Canada to give the event a name that is more in line with figure

skating’s national gov-erning body.

“It’s a just a way of creating a more focused consistent brand mes-sage for Skate Canada as the governing body and as a Skate Canada event,” said Skate Cana-da CEO Dan Thompson.

Whatever the reason, it’s been a long time coming according to three-time world cham-pion Elvis Stojko.

“I thought it was a cool idea, because hon-estly I thought about it

years ago, because there’s no figures in it,” Stojko said. Compulsory figures were dropped from the sport 23 years ago.

“And figure skating has a stigma to it. Some people who are into other sports say ‘Oh fig-ure skating,”’ Stojko said, exasperatingly drawing out the word ‘figure.’

“We don’t have it anymore, it’s just free skating. It’s just artistic or free skating.

“Figure skating, it’s

had that image for a long time, guys who were in hockey were like, ‘Figure skating, I don’t want to watch fig-ure skating.’ So you take the name out then you add that extra dimen-sion to it.”

Stojko admitted he took grief in school for being a figure skater.

“Oh totally. . . ‘You’re a figure skater? Come on twinkle toes, what’s going on?’ I always got picked on in school for that.”

VANCOUVER - The Vancouver Canucks had a December to remem-ber.

Since the calendar flipped to 2014, it’s been a very unhappy new year.

After compiling a 10-1-2 mark last month that put some distance be-tween the teams chasing them in the Western Conference wildcard race, the Canucks have lost five in a row, includ-ing four straight to start January.

The latest setback came Tuesday, when the Pittsburgh Penguins scored twice in the final 1:11 of regulation with their goalie pulled to tie the game before win-ning 5-4 in a shootout.

All told, the Canucks have given up six goals in five games this season when opponents have their goalie on the bench for an extra attacker.

“Late in games, I al-ways talk about situa-tional play,” Canucks head coach John Tor-torella said after Thurs-day’s practice at Rogers

Arena. “Situational play is a mindset and we have not totally grasped that. That’s a mental tough-ness, to me. I believe you can develop that type of mental toughness - to play in the (hard) areas at certain times, at cer-tain (moments) of games.

“I think at times we’ve done it this year, and obviously of late here, we haven’t.”

Tortorella said the only way to deal with blown leads is to get back on the horse.

“You hope you’re leading again 3-2 in the third period ... and you find a way to get it done,” he said. “You need to grasp something.”

Tortorella said that for him, the most fasci-nating part of coaching is the mind, adding that it’s his job to make sure players learn how to be tough mentally game in and game out.

“I tell the players they’re screwed - if I see it once, I know it’s there,” said Tortorella. “When you show signs you can

do it, then you need to demand yourself to do it more consistently. That’s a big part of our responsibility. I’ve seen us play stiff enough to handle situations.

“When you’re devel-oping an identity of a hockey club, it falls on the coach to demand it and keep it there. I’m in it with them as far this little slump here.”

Vancouver’s current losing streak includes road defeats to the Los Angeles Kings and the Anaheim Ducks. The

Canucks currently sit in the first wildcard posi-tion, but they host the powerhouse St. Louis Blues on Friday before travelling back to Los Angeles and Anaheim as part of a three-game roadtrip.

“The schedule’s not getting any easier,” said Canucks defenceman Kevin Bieksa. “We’ve got a lot teams that are ahead of us in the stand-ings that we’re playing. These are the teams we have to beat if we want to catch them.”

Dear Annie: My relationship with my mother has always been challenging. When she could no longer grab me by the hair and shake my head, she adopted inappropriate behavior with my boyfriends, called me stu-pid, worshipped my brothers and sister-in-law over me, and much more. The final straw came in a telephone con-versation. My mother said she was tired from being out the other day with a friend. She asked, “Do all old people get tired when they go out?” I didn’t want to compare her with my father, who works hard and had visited me earlier that week. I replied, “All old people age differently.” My mother then commenced some heavy and deliberate sighing that lasted the remainder of the call while I tried to make conversation. I politely said goodbye. When it was time for me to make my an-nual call to her, I picked up the phone and started to dial but hung up before reaching the last number. I have not called my mother since. That was three years ago. My mother is now 83. I do not believe I am holding a grudge, although that has been suggested to me. I am just so hurt and ashamed that my own mother would reject me the way she has. When is it OK to say enough? -- Don’t Miss Her Dear Don’t: The final straw was a phone call where Mom mostly sighed? And after three years, you are still angry. We recognize that Mom mistreated you when you were younger, but you spoke to her only once a year. It’s not a grudge so much as an inability to deal with Mom’s behavior, and it remains unresolved, which mostly hurts you. Ask yourself how you would feel if Mom died without any further contact. If that bothers you even slightly, please talk to a profession-al and find a way to work through this, what-ever the outcome. Dear Annie: My wife and I have been mar-ried for 15 years. It seems that if I don’t ini-tiate sex, we never have any. I have told her what I would like, but she shows no interest. She just lies there and neither moves nor makes a sound. I don’t know whether I am giving her any pleasure. I have discussed my concerns with her and have asked what she would like in the bed-room, but she always says, “Everything is fine. I like what we do.” I am frustrated. I really love my wife and don’t want to end the relationship, but I have been having thoughts about finding another lover who will fulfill my needs in the bed-room. Please help. -- Not Sure What To Do Dear Not Sure: Your wife may feel inhibited about sex, which is why she is silent in the bedroom and won’t discuss her preferences. It’s also possible that she doesn’t enjoy sex, for physical or emotional reasons, and has no interest in working at it. Instead of talking about likes and dislikes, tell her that her sto-ic reaction to sex saddens you and that it is threatening the stability of your marriage. Ask her to go with you to see a marriage counselor or a professional sex therapist. Dear Annie: I read the letter from “Working Hard,” who futilely complained to her boss and human resources about a fellow em-ployee who isn’t doing his share of the work. Everywhere I have ever worked, there are people who do more than asked and people who do so little it’s maddening. I have come to the realization that complaining about lazy co-workers is a waste of time. Manage-ment would rather put up with a poor em-ployee than admit they made a mistake in hiring or promoting that person in the first place. -- W.C. I recently returned from a Caribbean cruise which had a couple interesting ports of call and

were places I had not yet visited.

Although I was only in these ports for one day each, it did provide a sample of what they have to offer, and al-lowed me the opportu-nity to decide whether I might like to return for a longer visit someday.

Roatan, Honduras is the largest of the Bay Is-lands, just off the coast from the mainland city of La Cieba, and is a lush, hilly island with some great white sand beaches.

It is 77 kilometres long and eight kilome-tres wide. Coxen Hole is the major village, with a

smattering of others throughout the island – French Harbour, West End and Sandy Bay.

The official language is English. This makes it a popular destination for tourism.

The native islanders are descendents from Africa and the Cayman Islands.

But the real draw here is the proximity to the largest barrier reef in the Caribbean.

Scuba diving and snorkelling are world class, with many dive sites complete with shipwrecks and huge coral reefs. As well, you can find ziplines, glass bottom boats, and an eco-walk suspension bridge.

Tropic Air operates a frequent schedule from

Roatan to Belize City, and there is a catamaran ferry to La Cieba on the mainland.

Roatan is becoming a more popular cruise port and the facilities are improving all the time. But you still feel like you are a bit off the beaten track as far as cruise ports go.

The other port of call was Belize City. I had not heard very positive things about Belize City, so I decided to visit the beautiful island of Am-bergris Caye for my day in port here.

Upon arrival on the mainland in Belize City, it was just a short taxi to the airport and a quick 20-minute flight to San Pedro in Ambergris Caye.

about 200 metres above the sea is an amazing coral flightseeing ad-venture in itself!

Ambergris Caye is the largest island of Be-lize, 40 kilometres long and 1.6 kilometres wide. It is basically a ring of white sand surrounding a mangrove swamp in the centre.

Scuba, snorkelling, caving, sailing, fishing, and skydiving are popu-lar activities here, but the most popular activi-ty is relaxing in front of your beach hut with a great rum drink in your hands! This place is pretty laid back.

Tropic Air and Maya Air operate regular flights to the island; the mode of transport on the island is golf cart or bicycle.

PROVO, Utah — A 58-year-old U.S. woman is set to give birth in a few weeks — to her first grandchild.

Julia Navarro is serv-ing as a gestational sur-rogate for her daughter and son-in-law after the couple struggled with fertility problems.

Navarro’s daughter Lorena McKinnon said she began trying to have a baby with her hus-band, Micah McKinnon, three years ago.

The 32-year-old, from Provo, Utah, said she’s had about a dozen miscarriages, with the longest pregnancy last-ing 10 weeks.

After several tries, the couple began look-ing for a surrogate. McKinnon said a friend and sister both consid-ered carrying her baby, but ultimately decided against it.

That’s when her mother offered to step in.

“As a family, we have to help each other,’’ Na-varro told The Salt Lake Tribune.

Navarro had to un-dergo hormone shots for three months before an embryo fertilized by her daughter and son-in-law could be im-planted. Because of her age, doctors had warned there was only a 45 per cent chance the implan-tation would be suc-

cessful.But the procedure

was a success, and Na-varro said she’s had a smooth pregnancy car-rying a developing baby girl.

As with other surro-gacy arrangements, the couple and Navarro needed three months of counselling.

“The psychologists wanted to make sure we knew what we were get-ting into — that we were mentally prepared,’’ McKinnon said. “Most-ly, surrogacy contracts are with people you don’t know. It was weird to have a contract with my mom.’’

It’s unclear how rare it is for a woman to carry her own grandchild, but recent news reports have detailed similar re-lationships.

Last year, a 53-year-old Iowa woman gave birth to her twin grand-daughters. And in 2012, a 49-year-old woman in Maine gave birth to her grandson.

McKinnon said she was grateful and over-whelmed by her moth-er’s offer, which eases some of the obstacles and financial burdens for parents using a ges-tational surrogate.

According to Utah law, surrogates must be

21 or older, financially stable and must have already given birth once.

Couples must be married and are al-lowed to offer a reason-able payment to a sur-rogate.

On average, a couple can spend about $60,000 on procedures and pay-ing the surrogate, but McKinnon said her mother’s offer to help is saving the couple about half of that.

Both she and her daughter said they’ve bonded over the experi-ence.

The baby girl is due in early February.

COPENHAGEN, Den-mark — Easy on the cinna-mon! That advice from Den-mark’s food authority has rankled pastry chefs whose cinnamon rolls were found to violate the European Union’s spice rules.

The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration re-cently discovered that Dan-ish cinnamon rolls and twists contained more coumarin — a chemical compound in the most common variety of cin-namon — than EU rules allow. Excessive intake of coumarin can cause liver damage.

So the agency asked Dan-ish bakers to reduce the

amount of cinnamon they sprinkle in the dough for sweet treats like the “kanel-snegel’’ (cinnamon roll) and “kanelstang’’ (cinnamon twist).

Danish bakers protested, saying the EU limit is too strict, and would make it hard, if not impossible, to make their cherished pas-tries.

“A grown man like me could eat like 10 ‘kanelsne-gle’ every day for several years and not even get near the limit of what’s dangerous to my liver,’’ said Anders Grabow, a spokesman for the Danish Bakers’ Association. “I would probably get too much sugar in my body be-fore that.’’

The EU limit for so-called “fine baked goods’’ is set at 15 milligrams of coumarin per kilogram of pastry. The Dan-ish agency found last year that more than half of the 74 food samples it took from bakeries, supermarkets and importers contained more coumarin than that.

The Danish bakers noted

that their colleagues in neigh-bouring Sweden can get away with more than three times as much coumarin in their cinnamon rolls because food authorities there classify them as “traditional and sea-sonal bakery’’ for which EU rules are less strict.

The Danish food agency didn’t use that classification because it didn’t consider the “kanelsnegle’’ as a pastry sold primarily for Christmas or other holidays, said agen-cy spokesman Henrik Niel-sen.

Officials will meet with the bakers’ association next month to review which baked goods can be considered sea-sonal or traditional, he said.

Let me begin with a report about my New Year’s resolutions. I

have made progress in keeping some of them, particularly the first one—I have already made some mistakes. It’s probably the first time I’ve ever kept part of a New Year’s resolution so quickly and easily.

I was also delighted to find a wonderful Franciscan blessing on-line.

I had heard about it before, and I’ve seen versions of it. I was de-lighted when I finally found a copy of the whole thing. (At least, I think it’s the whole thing. Who knows? It may be another mistake of mine!)

“May God bless you with discomfort at easy answers, half–truths, and superficial relation-ships so that you may live deep within your heart.

“May God bless you with anger at injustice, oppression, and ex-ploitation of people, so that you may work for justice, freedom and peace.

“May God bless you with tears to shed for those who suffer pain, rejection, hunger and war so that you may reach out your hand to comfort them and to turn their pain into joy.

“And may God bless you with enough fool-ishness to believe that you can make a differ-ence in the world, so that you can do what

others claim cannot be done to bring justice and kindness to all our children and the poor.”

I love this blessing. It reminds us of the fragili-ty of life.

Our lives are pre-cious and fragile things. We are given life as a gift. We don’t own it. We don’t control it. Some days, we don’t even manage it very well.

It reminds me of John Lennon’s quota-tion that “life is what happens while you are busy making other plans.”

This blessing helps us learn to be discontent with things as they are, and to be hopeful about the possibility of the re-newal of life in the midst of the pain and whole-ness, sorrow and joy that characterize our lives on Earth.

That’s the thing about New Year’s reso-lutions as well.

There is nothing magical about 1/1. It is not really different than 12/31. Yet what matters is that we have decided to count 1/1 as a new start.

We make a choice to wipe the slate clean and begin with a renewed sense of hopefulness. We face the future with a new resolve.

Part of the hope in this for me is the possi-bility that I might grow and change, and that we might all grow and change.

So we bless this sense of discomfort. We face

forward; we have a re-newed sense of digging deeper; we make a new commitment to seek to see beneath the surface of things.

We will choose to not be satisfied with easy answers, and we will seek to understand life more deeply.

When we become uncomfortable with the way things are, there is a natural anger at the in-justice and exploitation that we see all around us.

We can name that ex-ploitation in so many

ways, but the results of it are all around us: home-lessness, the increasing gap between rich and poor, the ruination of the environment, and so on.

Therefore, the anger is accompanied by tears. Anger without sorrow leads to arrogance. Sor-row without anger leads

to hopelessness. Anger and tears together hold out the possibility that we might work humbly and faithfully to restore life.

I read a wonderful post a few days ago about a young man preaching his first ser-mon.

He had decided, in all his late teenage wis-dom, to preach about hell. He wanted to warn people about the conse-quences of an unfaithful life.

In the midst of his sermon, he had an “a-

ha” moment, an epipha-ny.

In the midst of his first sermon, he had a powerful sense of God’s compassion, and he began to weep.

Instead of damna-tion for evil in the world, he had a vivid sense of the pain that our sorrow causes in the heart of God.

He ends, “I could go on with this list of what hell is like, this list of torture and horror and pain and say, ‘This is what God is like.’ Or I could go with my break-

ing heart, I could choose the tears. ‘This, this ache of love, this is what God is like.’ I chose the tears.”

And in the midst of those tears, we bless the foolishness of thinking that we might actually be able to make a differ-ence.

We can. Truly.This, for me, is faith-

ful Christian living.
