■ Cranberry juice appears to be efficacious for theprevention of urinary tract infections (UTIs), but onlyin certain patient subpopulations, according to theresults of a Cochrane review and systematic meta-analysis. Data were assessed from ten randomisedcontrolled trials (total participants 1049) evaluating≥ 1 months’ treatment with cranberry juice or anothercranberry product. Meta-analyses found that cranberryproducts were associated with a significant reductionin the incidence of UTIs, compared with control, overall at 12 months (four trials; RR 0.66; 95% CI0.47, 0.92), and among participants with a history ofUTIs (two trials; 0.61; 0.40, 0.91). However, therewere no such benefits observed among elderlypatients or those requiring catheterisation.Jepson RG, et al.
