DEAR PARENTS/CARERS: Creative Play at Craigie Heights If you visit the school during lunch and recess times you can see a wide range of play activities in place. Students will be involved in traditional games such as basketball, cricket, soccer and football. They also use the existing equipment to build body strength by swinging on the monkey bars, climbing up the walls and ladders and sliding down the slides. The Playable Landscape is also very popular over near Seabird Place. There they can climb Mt Craigie and through the tunnels as well as improve their balance on the stepping stones. On the stepped area outside Rooms 8 and 9 there are many different sized wood blocks and students have turned them into forts, jails, cakes, powder factories and houses amongst other things. These blocks were simply fallen branches that we cut into a variety of sizes and lengths. Between the Dental Therapy Unit and Room 9 students are actively creating all sorts of wonderful inventions. They make awesome cubbies and I have seen clever water systems and gardens. This area needs new bits and pieces from time to time so if you are building or in a trade where you cast off materials that kids might be able to build with we’d love to have them and reuse them please. (milk crates, plumbers pipes, light wood, tarpaulins etc etc). There is a plan coming to fruition to introduce some yard games into the courtyard to cater for the students who might need a quieter activity from time to time. All these play activities foster imagination, collaboration and negotiation. They also promote fitness in a natural way and connect children to the natural world. There is a great stimulus to solve problems and work and play together in harmony as outlined in our school vision. National Schools Opinion Survey We are required to run this survey biennially with students, staff and parents. We use the information in our planning to improve all aspects of the school’s work so your feedback is highly valued. From the last survey we sought further information on bullying, acted on it and further implemented the positive Behaviour Support Program. The PATHS program was introduced because a need for Social Emotional Learning was indicated in the survey. We love to hear from parents – the good and the to be improved - and would really appreciate the time you put into it. It should not take more than five minutes. HAPPY KIDS WEEK—WEEK 8

CRAIGIE HEIGHTS RECOMMENDED AUTHORS

As part of the Happy Kids Week in Week 8 of Term 1, on Friday 23rd March 2018, all students in Years 1 to 6 will attend an incursion, funded by the City of Joondalup and Healthway as part of their Act-Belong-Commit Co; Education Program. The show is called “Paper, Scissors, Rocket!” and will be performed by the Co3 Dance Team. The performance lasts for 20 minutes. The dancers will then conduct 1 hour workshops for students in Years 4, 5 and 6 throughout the day. We are lucky to get this chance as, I believe, only 6 schools had the op-portunity for this event to be fully funded. Looking forward to a fun event. Mrs Massey, Music Teacher.

HONOUR CERTIFICATE WINNERS

WEEK 6 TERM 1

Congratulations to the following students who

received Honour Certificates last week for Being

Respectful, Being Responsible, Being Safe or

Being Achievers:

PP to Year 2: Talon, Violet, Otto, Luke, Ethan,

Lily, Elias, Ella, Bodie, Emily, Isla, Reed

Year 3 to Year 6: Jack, Lily, Hiroshi, Koby, Kian,

Sasha, Holly, Phoebe, Casey, Maison, Kayla,

Lily, Lachlan, Matilda

Room 12 are Achievers!!

Last week’s assembly was performed by Mrs Bardsley’s Year

4 class. The song “I’m Gonna Show Respect“ was written by

Mrs Bardsley and reminded us all of some important

messages about our PBS expected behaviours. I really liked

how they linked the positive behaviours to positive

consequences. For example, when you are respectful to

others, you make friends. A wonderful assembly Room 12!

Room 4 are Responsible!

Every week when I go to pick up Room 4, to take them to the library, they are

super organised with their pencil cases and library bags. They are also so

quiet when walking past other classrooms, that other classes don’t even

know they are there. Very responsible and respectful Room 4!

Peter-Ray, Summer, Lucas, Reilley

and Madeline are being Respectful!

These students are being respectful by

looking after our new Outdoor Reading

Area. They are following the rules. The

rules are there so that the equipment

can last and be enjoyed by everyone.

Well done to all of you!

Members of the Running

Club are being Achievers!!

Every Wednesday morning, Mr Searle and our

dedicated parent helpers coordinate the running

club. Many students are dedicated members and

turn up every week and train well. Congratulations

to all our runners on their efforts!

The National Young Leaders Day Last Friday I had the pleasure of accompanying our Year 6 Student Councillors to The National Young Leaders Day. This is a student leadership conference that the Halogen group runs every year. Our school has been involved in this special day for the last 4 years and every year the students get so much value out of it. The event consists of keynote speakers, multimedia presentations and interactive learning that develops strong leadership values in young Australians. Our MCs included DJ Raf who energised the students at the beginning of the day and between speakers. The councillors enjoyed all 4 speakers who included the following, and were able to identify their key messages: John Coutis – Without the lower part of his body, John delivers an amazing story of overcoming adversity. He follows the Golden Rule in Life: ‘Treat people the way you wish to be treated.’ He believes a leader should lead by example and everyone should take responsibility for themselves, know what is right, know what is wrong, and make good choices. Dr Fiona Wood – Dr Wood is a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon specialising in burn care, trauma and scar reconstruction. I liked her statement that she felt ‘privileged that she can help people whose lives change in an instant.’ Her message to our leaders was that a seed of knowledge can change someone life and not to hold back: explore your potential, be the best that you can be and share your gift. Andrew Embley – A former West Coast Eagles premiership player, who was with the club for 15 years. His message of developing confidence was an important one: you need to have belief in yourself and preparation is important. He believes that your mind is your most powerful tool. To help him reach his goals he would write it down, read it every day and put it into action. Rick Ardon – Rick has been presenting the news on Channel 7 for over 30 years. His key messages to students was to listen to your teachers and be inclusive, get to know everyone and know that everyone has their own story. He believes that if you make a mistake it is best to admit it and learn from it. Thank you to Mrs Nielsen who also attended the day with us. Well done to our Student Councillors. They did a great job of representing our school and their enthusiasm is to be congratulated. Mrs Robinson—Deputy Principal

HAPPY KIDS / HARMONY DAY—MONDAY 19TH MARCH

Craigie Heights PS will be conducting its Happy Kids/Harmony Day on Monday 19th March. This is a day to promote our positive PBS / PATHs messages and an opportunity to remind ourselves of the richness of diversity and the importance of cultural respect. The day will focus on issues such as— healthy food choices, healthy minds and resilience education. This event will include: an incursion – School Performance Tour (K-6), rotation activities (P-6); and a family picnic lunch. Students are encouraged to wear bright coloured clothes. This includes socks, tops, shorts/skirts and hair ribbons. Please refrain from using face paints or hair colour. Families are welcome to set up a picnic lunch on the oval at lunch time (1:00pm). Parents of Kindy and Pre-primary students will need to collect their kids from their classrooms. There will be a sign out and sign in sheet at each Kindy/Pre-primary class. If signed out, the Kindy and Pre-primary students will be under the care of their parents during the lunch break. The cost of the performance is $4.50. Please return the permission slip and payment for the incursion to the office by Wednesday 14th March. For more information, please see Mrs Carroll, Room 14.

KINDY SCIENCE DAY

Miss Leach's Kindy Room 3 had an exciting Science Day! The students participated in water colour changing experiments, ice cube painting and we even caught ice cubes using salt! We have a great day and learnt so much.

CHAPLAIN’S CHATTER

CHAPLAIN’S CHAMPION

We all have moments of high anxiety and worry in our lives. Hopefully as we mature we learn how to manage these moments but sometimes it can be helpful to have some strategies to fall back on. Here are some tried and tested ideas you could use yourself and talk to your kids about. These come in handy not just when we are worried but also when we feel frustrated and/or angry. Quick Ways to Calm Down: Imagine your favourite place - it’s like taking a mini vacation wherever you are

Think of your favourite things

Name animals alphabetically (alligator, bear, cow, dog, etc…)

Squeeze Something (play dough, clay, silly putty, your fists, a stress ball)

Get a Cold Drink of Water

Jenny Palandri

The Chaplain’s Champion from our week 6 assembly was Ella, from

Miss Hodge’s Year 6 cohort. Ella is a happy, friendly student whose

huge smile brightens up the day. She shows concern for the welfare

of her peers and uses her initiative to help in all aspects of learning

and classroom routines. Ella shows she is a responsible student by

seeking feedback on her learning and encourages others to follow

the expected behaviours. She always ensures she is well organised

and strives to achieve her personal best in all that she does. Ella

consistently chooses to be kind when solving problems and uses the

golden rule (treat others as would like them to treat you) in and out of

the classroom. Ella is an asset to our classroom and the wider school

community. Congratulations Ella.

Crazy Hat Day for Popy

For several years now, our school has supported Popy from Bangladesh. In a recent letter Popy, wrote…

Over the past year I’ve been participating in a children’s club, a vegetable gardening group, a peer education group, a child led learning group and I’m a leader at my children’s club. Along with other children in my community, I’ve also been studying at my local school. I’m currently in Year7. My family have been involved in a parent teacher association, a savings group and other community activities. Our closest safe water comes from a public borehole, which takes us less than half an hour to walk to and from home. We collect water there every day.

At Craigie Heights Primary School we hold one donation day each term to support Popy. This term, for the donation of a gold coin, everyone in our school community is invited to wear a Crazy Hat to school, on Thursday 15th March. Please remember you still need to bring your sun-smart hat to wear at recess and lunch time and for Phys Ed.
