It feels so wonderful at this time of year when spring is,if not quite in the air yet then most definitely in the offing, and the world slowly starts to thaw around us. I abhor the

cold, and never leave the house without at least five layers of clothing on if I can help it so, when the wintry sunshine beginsto bring a little more warmth and tiny green buds start to appear on branches, it brings me infinite cheer knowing that spring and all its promise of new life and new beginnings is just aroundthe corner.

This month’s issue has plenty of inspiration to keep you going through the (hopefully) last few weeks of winter. Helen Chilton uses the latest set of Faber-Castell Gelatos in Steampunkshades to create the most scrumptious makes in Steampunk Glory on p.10. For home décor ideas you must have a look at Jenny Marples’ Vellum on a Vase(p.62), where she makesnot only a vase but also the beautiful flowers to put inside it,all from vellum!

March means it’s Mother’s Day, so with this in mind we’ve got exquisite makes that your mum will love from Elizabeth Borer (Mothering Sunday Suitcase, p.6), plus gift tags, bags and boxes from Lydia Brooke Evans on p.29. This month’s Distress to Impress on p.35 is a vintage-style card that’s simple to adaptto fit with your own mum’s tastes too!

Lastly, our Masterclass this month is all about getting more from your trusty glue gun, and Jaine Drake has come up with some amazingly creative ways to use hers to make stencils, embellishments and more. Turn to p.69 and be prepared to get a lot of extra glue sticks in so you can have a play too. I’ve already got mine!

Until next month, keep stamping!

Editor’s Pick – p.29It’s with great pleasure and excitement that we welcome back the very talented Kay Carley after a little hiatus. I know her unashamedly pretty and highly detailed card designs have been sorely missed, so it’s great to have her designing for us again!

Paint the whole suitcase, inside and out, with Island Sand paint, applying two coats if required. When the paint is dry use low tack tape to mask out stripes around the sides of the case. Mix Blueberry Crush with a little Snowflake to create a soft blue and paint the stripes. Line the box at this point if you wish.

Using the Flourish stencil and the soft blue paint mix, stencil the design onto the case in the corners as shown. Once dry, repeat the stencilling on the underside of the suitcase.

Stencil the crisscross design from the Gothic Romance stencil in Mushroom randomly all over the suitcase. (Only stencil through parts of the design to avoid creating straight edges.) Stencil small areas on the Island Sand stripes. Mix Space Cadet and Mushroom to get a soft green and stencil the circular design on the top and bottom of the case.

Stamp the smaller stamp from the Rosehip set randomly onto the top and bottom of the case, keeping the design around the edges. Use the same stamp to decorate the sides of the case. Stamp across the stripes, turning the stamp around so the design appears to come from the top and bottom.

Stamp the larger design from the Rosehip stamp in Jet Black Archival on top of the case as shown. Create a mask, then stamp the Butterfly Post stamp over the roses. Colour the roses, hips and leaves. Once dry, adhere the lace and ribbon on the diagonal (see main photo). Add crochet lace trim all around the top edge of the suitcase to create a neat finish.

Paint some white card with Island Sand. Stamp the larger Rosehip design once and the postcard design twice with black Archival ink. Colour and cut out one postcard and just the butterfly from the other. Colour and cut out a rose and some leaves from the Rosehip stamp. Attach the images as shown using Pinflair glue. Attach the flowers as shown.

W hen I started this project I had in mind a piece of home decor that could be given as a present to a special lady as

a Mother’s Day present. I decided that this little suitcase would be just the thing to put some lovely goodies into, and would still be a treasure to keep after everything inside was gone.

I often work with wooden blanks which always need sanding between layers to achieve a smooth surface to stamp onto. Paper mache is a lovely surface to work on because it needs no extra work other than painting! I always paint both sides of the piece that I am working on, because the paint seals the surface and if one side is not sealed it can absorb dampness and the whole project can then warp.

I lined the inside of the suitcase with patterned paper that complements my chosen colours, however you could just leave it painted, or for a really sumptuous finish it could be lined with a pretty fabric. If you do decide to line the inside, do so before decorating the outside to avoid damaging the final decoration.

The pretty paper flowers I have used in this project originally were not the right shade, so I have used Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in Fully Purple to colour them. Finally, don’t forget to decorate the back of the suitcase with the stencilling and the first layer of stamping. Although the back will not really be seen the project will feel unfinished if it’s left undecorated.

FURTHER IDEAS:

Butterfly Door HangerPaint the hanger with Blueberry Crush with a little white added, but slightly darker than the stripes on the main project. Use the Mushroom paint to stencil the crisscross design from the Gothic Romance stencil randomly over the surface. Mix Space cadet with Mushroom and stencil the circular design. Stamp the smaller of the two floral stamps as before using Eggplant ink.

Adhere lace and then a strip of crochet lace diagonally across the hanger and then stick paper flowers as needed. Finally, stamp two of the postcard design onto card painted with Island Sand and colour and then cut out the butterflies. Bend the wings of the butterflies to give dimension and attach them one on top of the other with Pinflair glue to the hanger. Rub Treasure Gold around the edges of the aperture and the outside edges.

Elegant CardPaint half of a sheet of white card with Island Sand and the other half with a mix of Blueberry Crush and Snowflake. Stamp the smaller of the two Rosehips around the edge in Eggplant on the blue card.Dry-emboss the yellow card, trim to size then rub Amethyst Treasure Gold over the raised areas.

Stamp and heat-emboss with gold powder the larger of the Rosehip stamps onto purple cardstock. Wrap a piece of wide gold ribbon around this and tie in a bow. Adhere to the dry-embossed panel using foam pads.

Cover the card blank with more purple cardstock before mounting all the decorated panels in place, then finish with some paper flowers.

Be inspired by the gorgeous new colours in this set of Steampunk Gelatos. By Helen Chilton

Steampunk Glory

Masterclass:

"All those browns,’ I hear you say. As you may know, I usually have trouble with brown, but as a set these Gelatos work and blend really well together,

and the purple just adds a touch of colour. I might be converted!”

Project: Stamping With Gelatos

• Sizzix Frameworks Border Die by Tim Holtz:Trellis

• VersaMark Ink

• Stampendous Fran-tage Embossing Enamel:Aged Bronze

• Tim Holtz Idea-ology Paper Stash 8 x 8: Menagerie

• PaperArtsy Grey-White Board: Heavy 8 x 8

• Light coloured, text patterned paper

• Sandpaper

• Copper eyelets

• Ribbons and fibres

Spritz the cog stamp with water, wipe off the excess, rub over with Cinnamon Gelato and stamp onto patterned paper.

Repeat with the other colours until the whole piece is stamped.

Choose your Tim Holtz paper and stick this to a piece of the 8 x 8 white board. Cut the top corners as shown.

Layer on the stamped piece and cut the corners at the same angle by jutting it up to the corner and cutting off the excess.

Stick the stamped patterned paper down and then get out the sandpaper and rough up the surfaces and edges.

Using the Frameworks die, cut some thin card grids to use as masks and start inking through with the VersaMark ink pad fairly randomly.

N ow you all know how much I love Faber-Castell Gelatos, so when they brought out a new set called Steampunk, I just had to make some projects with them! The colours are lovely, both their shades and names: Black Cherry, Cinnamon, Coffee and Iced Chai.

For the most part I've blended them and stamped with them. It was fascinating to see that you could stamp the much lighter Chai over the darker tones of the other colours and it still showed up.

For my stamps I thought I'd stick with the Steampunk theme and chose some lovely images from Chocolate Baroque, an A5 sheet called Steampunk Butterfly.

I've used scrapbook papers to start off my backgrounds – some 8 x 8 patterned paper by Tim Holtz, and the others are just a mixture of different text patterns on neutral backgrounds that I happened to have in the drawer. Just look through what you've got and see what you think will work well together.

The grids that I've used are cut from a Tim Holtz Frameworks die; these come in several patterns, and I've chosen Trellis. I decorated the white board first and then die-cut it, so that both the trellis and the negative ‘inserts’ were coloured and stamped. By cutting several grids and laying them one above the other, you can create a framework of any size; you're not limited to the size of the die. The inserts can also be used on their own as accents. For the bookmark, I've even used what was left behind after die-cutting to make my basic shape. With these dies, versatility is definitely the name of the game!

To add a bit of pizzazz, I've used the Stampendous Fran-tage Embossing Enamel in Aged Bronze. I love this range as each pot is a mixture of different colours and textures. In several places I've double embossed, reheating parts of the embossed image and sprinkling with the powder again.

DESIGNER TIP…

Stamping with the Gelatos produces a lovely watercolour effect. Just experiment to get the right amount of water

spritzed onto yourstamp.

Pour over the Aged Bronze Fran-tage. If it comes out too black, just heat again and dip into the more bronze-y bits of the powder and reheat.

If there are any parts you've applied VersaMark to by mistake, just brush off the powder with a paintbrush before heating.

Gelato and stamp a whole piece of 8 x 8 white board using all four colours.

Die-cut the white board with the Trellis die. Layer two up onto the tag, keeping some of the inserts in place and using the others separately.

Gelato some light coloured text paper and stamp and emboss your butterfly. Cut out to leave a thin border.

Re-emboss the butterfly by heating a section at a time and dipping back into the powder (see intro). Layer onto grid and add eyelets and ribbons to finish. Neaten up the back with patterned paper.

Apply acrylic paints with a sponge or piece of Cut-N-Dry foam in a swiping motion, taking care not to dislodge any of the masking fluid as you do so.

Once the paint has thoroughly dried, rub the masking fluid with either a finger or a soft eraser until it has all been removed.

Use the graphite pencil to fill in any of the white areas around the image where the paint didn’t reach. Add more pencil all around the outside edge of the stamped image and smudge and blend as shown.

Trim the card to fit the front of your card blank and draw a frame around it with the white paint pen. Doodle over this with the black pen to create the border.

Add a soft pencil line to the inside of the border and gently blend as shown. Mat the card to black cardstock, then adhere to the front of the card blank.

My crafting time is at a premium, and I’m always on the lookout for products that will save me time. I’m also not too keen on sitting and cutting out intricate images like these little characters from Stampotique. Imagine my delight when I came across a product called masking fluid at

my local craft shop – I could now stamp my image, cover it up, then create a background over it without wrecking it, or worse, having to fussy-cut it to go over the top of the background.

This technique is not only for time-poor (lazy!) people like me. It would also be useful for people with conditions that hinder their use of scissors, such as arthritis, movement disorders, hand injuries or impaired vision.

Firstly, the image needs to be stamped with a waterproof ink. Once the ink has dried, I applied the masking fluid with an old paint brush. I say old because the masking fluid will harden in it and it won’t be much good for painting with afterwards. The masking fluid doesn’t need to be applied in a thick layer at all – even a thin layer will protect what is underneath perfectly.

Once the masking fluid had set, I created the background. I applied the acrylic paint with a sponge – avoid anything too stiff as you don’t want to accidentally rub the masking fluid off. I allowed this to dry completely (the exact time will depend on the medium used to create the background). Allow to air dry and avoid using a heat gun to speed it up or it may melt the masking fluid.

After rubbing the masking fluid there may be some white gaps around the image where the masking fluid was applied ‘out of the lines’. These can be disguised a little with charcoal or water-soluble graphite pencil. This also adds a slight shadow effect, which is effective in grounding the image.

MaterialsMasked Characters

“I love the contrast when a black and white image appears on a brightly coloured background. I used to think the only way to achieve this look involved

hours of fussy-cutting. Then I added a product called masking fluid to my crafting arsenal, and now at last

my fussy-cutting days are over!”

FURTHER IDEAS:

I Am PerfectStamp the image and create the background as shown in the step-by-step section. For this design I have used different coloured acrylic paint (Lemon and Turquoise) to create a card that is more suitable for a boy. Trim the panel to slightly smaller than your card blank, mat to black cardstock and adhere to the front of the card blank.

Blue DaisiesBy Lynnda Worsnop

This is the sort of stamp set I love to explore and create different

backgrounds with. I designed it for kiss stamping with, so I just

had to include a little of that in my make too.

For the background pieces I have sprayed the card with the

Citrus Lime and the French Mint ink and once dry added second

generation stamped images in Powder Blue and Midnight ink

using the outline daisy and the word stamp. For the main piece

I have used the same inks in a bottle but with more Mint and

less Lime. I also blotted it with paper towel to get a softer feel.

This piece shows kiss stamping using the main daisy pallet

stamp. I added blue dots to the clean stamp using Midnight

Pigment Ink and one of the small stamps, and then gently

added a little more Midnight ink around the edge of the stamp. I stamped this twice on to

background, getting a second softer image before cleaning the stamp and starting again.

The decoupaged daisy was created by stamping the outline daisy on to stamping card

sprayed with Blue Jeans and water. I stamped in Midnight and used clear embossing

powder to create a strong image. The first daisy is cut out

as normal and then cut down the petals to the centre in

about six places. The second one was cut into segments

and the centre removed. The sentiment was stamped in

Midnight ink on to the same sprayed card as the daisy.

“The small stamps in the set are ideal for creating a textured look

or pattern on your project.”

Try out this sweet floral stamp set from Oak House Studio.Stamping

ContrastsTHIS MONTH'S STAMPSSpring is (almost!) in the air, so we’ve got some beautiful big blooms stamps for our designers to try out this issue. Oak House Studio Stamps are designed by the company’s owner Lynnda Worsnop, and she designed this particular set with stamp kissing (or is it kiss stamping, I’m not sure?!) in mind, where a solid design is inked up before stamping a background or texture stamp onto the inked stamp thus providing texture and pattern to the resulting image. With a sunshine-y sentiment plus lots of additional mini texture stamps, there’s plenty of scope for cardmaking and art journalling in this set.

The Double Daisy stamp set is available to buy for £14.99 from Oak House Studio, www.oakhousestudio.com

Sunshine Heart By Georgina Ford

I started by painting the heart with gesso and Fresco

Finish paints. Once dry I stamped the small lines stamp,

included in the set, to create a textured background.

I stamped three flowers and heat-embossed them as

I did for my notebook. I stamped the sentiment and

then attached all the elements to the heart. I attached

the top left-hand flower with foam pads for extra

dimension.

MaterialsSTAMPS: Oak House Studio – Oak House Studio Double Daisy set. INKS: Distress Inks – Walnut Stain, Dusty Concord, Milled Lavender; Archival Ink – Potted Soil, Leaf Green; VersaMark. OTHER: MDF heart and tag; paper mache book; hessian; PaperArtsy Fresco Finish paint – Tinned Peas, Guacamole; Distress Markers – Spiced Marmalade, Walnut Stain; Clear embossing powder; Gesso; Pencils; Buttons; Cord.

Take Note By Georgina Ford

I started by painting the tag, book and pencils

with Fresco Finish paints. Once dry I stamped small

stamps from the set onto the items with an Archival

ink pad. The stamps are ideal for creating texture

and pattern.

I stamped the solid flower first. I inked the petals

only of the outline stamp with a Dusty Concord

Distress ink pad. I coloured the centre of the stamp

with a Spiced Marmalade Distress Marker before

stamping it on top of the solid flower. I also stamped

the small circle stamp in the centre of the flower.

I stamped the outline stamp again with a VersaMark

ink pad and heat-embossed with clear embossing

powder. I stamped the sentiment and attached this

with the flowers and hessian to the book. I punched

a hole in the back of the book and attached the tag.

DESIGNER TIP…

Use a wet glue that dries clear

when adhering the hessian.

Double Daisy Background Card

By Clare Buswell

For both my cards I wanted to create an off-register printed effect using

this bold flower stamp to create a modern look.

I repeat-stamped the solid flower to create a pattern using Pear Tart ink

onto some white card, then when stamping the outline flower in Grey

Flannel ink I offset the outlines. To add a little more definition to the

centres I repeat-stamped the dots pattern in black ink.

I trimmed the patterned paper to fit the width of my card base, I layered

it onto some co-ordinating light green card and wrapped some baker’s

twine around it and tied a bow. I rounded the bottom corners of the card

base to fit with the modern feel and stamped the sentiment in black ink.

Single Daisy Card

By Clare Buswell

For this design I used a single flower as my focal point, using the same stamping

technique but this time cutting out the flower for a more dimensional look. I

stamped a second centre, cut this out and adhered using foam pads.

I layered the flower onto a square panel of white card with rounded corners,

then layered the square onto a card base covered with light green card using

foam pads. I stamped the sentiment centrally at the bottom of the card and

added some grey enamel dots. I added some baker’s twine to finish.

MaterialsSTAMPS: Oak House Studio Double Daisy set. INKS: Memento Luxe Inks – Gray Flannel, Pear Tart; VersaFine – Onyx Black. OTHER: Card – White; Core’dinations light green card; Grey and white baker’s twine; grey enamel dots; corner rounder.

DeSigner tip…

When stamping with large solid image stamps pigment inks work better at giving you even coverage for

better results.

“I loved stamping with this big bold stamp from Oak House Studio. You can create some

beautiful patterns using it and it would look great stamped on a gift bag or even on some plain paper

to create your own gift wrap to match your card.”

Matching Sunshine Envelope By Kim Dellow

I kept the matching envelope simple but you could embellish the

whole envelope with this stamp set. I used my flower in the corner

of a lined card to make the address label. Again I went for an offset

flower and grungey bordered sentiment to coordinate with the

card, but this time I also inked around the edges of the label for a

little bit of extra colour.

Sunshine Orange By Kim Dellow

This stamp set has both a shadow and an outline stamp, perfect for

an offset big bloom feature image. I inked up the shadow stamp with

the Ranger Archival Saffron ink first, then dabbed the Hero Arts Lime

Green and Orange Soda in spots. Once I stamped the image, I then

stamped the outline, in the Charcoal, slightly to the right and down from

the shadow. I had cut the sentiment stamp from the set quite roughly

so used this to my advantage and inked the edges as well to get the

grungey effect border.

MaterialsSTAMPS: Oak House Studio Double Daisy Large. INKS: Hero Arts – Orange Soda, Charcoal, Lime Green; Ranger Archival Saffron. OTHER: White cardstock; Kraft card blank and envelope; Lined card.

“It is great to have two versions of the same flower in one stamp set – it opens up so many

possibilities. I love the idea of an offset flower as it gives it an almost printed look.”

N ow it is probably no secret that I love to colour in, especially with alcohol ink markers such as Copics and Spectrum Noir; however for this project I have set those aside in favour of the Spectrum Noir pencils. These are a soft, creamy wax-based blendable pencil that allows for

either a soft result when applied in a light layer or a rich, more vibrant colour when applied thickly.

It is useful to know when using wax-based pencils that they work by gradually filling up the fibres of the cardstock; it is therefore often best to add colour gradually and in layers so that if you want to bring in another colour at some stage there are enough ‘fibres’ left to do this. Once all the fibres have taken up the wax-based pigment you cannot add any more colour to it.

When colouring the dragonflies on the card I began with the darker colours and then progressed to the lighter colours. To do this I first mapped my colours out on the dragonflies’ wings by putting a light layer of each colour down separately, not overlapping the colours at all. I used 82 first next to the dragonfly’s body, then I took 80 and put a little of this along the outer edges of the wings, with 78 I came into the wing a little more, with 61 I coloured part of the middle section and then 58 was used on the tips of the wings.

With each shade I coloured directly onto the cardstock; I didn’t have another colour underneath it. Then with my colours ‘mapped out’ I applied a second denser layer over the top using the same colours and in the same order, this time overlapping each slightly so that they gently merged into each other. By doing this I was able to achieve that richness and vibrancy.

However, if you want a softer look start by putting down a light layer of your lightest colour first all over the wing, then add your next colour over the top and so on; this method gives a softer look with different tones coming through each of the overlaid colours. This was the method I chose when colouring the leafy sprigs on the dragonfly card as I wanted these to appear softer, plus I only went with one layer of each colour to achieve a more muted effect.

Lightly sand a 10cm x 18cm (4” x 7”) Antique Linen panel with some fine grade sandpaper. Stamp three dragonflies onto the panel using the black Memento ink pad.

Begin colouring the wings of one of the dragonflies using pencils 82, 80, 78, 61 and 56 – applying just a very light layer and laying the colours next to each other.

Using the same colours add a second more intense layer of colour, this time overlapping each colour slightly to give a beautiful blended look to the wings. Add just a little 42 to the outer edges.

Colour the head and body of the dragonfly with 47, 58 and 56 using the same method as in steps 2 and 3. Add just a little touch of 120 to the round portions of the dragonfly’s body.

Repeat steps 2-4 for the other two dragonflies then add a little touch of 120 to where the wings attach to the bodies to all three dragonflies to give dimension.

Sponge individual flourishes to the background of the panel using a sponge wedge and Antique Linen, moving the stencil about so that you can position flourishes exactly where you want them.

Project: Spectrum Noir Pencils

Stamp and emboss the circles and flowers around the dragonflies using VersaMark and white detail embossing powder.

Using the white gel pen, trace over some of the design elements of the dragonflies, to make them stand out and also to bring some ‘lightness’ back into the imagery.

Adhere the panel to a larger folded white card blank then trace around the panel with the 0.3mm black pen. Lightly apply Crystal glitter glue to the dragonflies and Platinum glitter glue to the edges of the panel.

Draw in sprigs of leaves by positioning the Leaf Swirl stencil onto the panel and outlining with the 0.1mm black pen – again pick out individual parts of the stencil and draw in the leaves so that they go behind the dragonflies.

Join any gaps of the drawn-in leaves with the same black pen. Colour using a light layer of 107 first and then lightly add in a small amount of 58 and just a touch of 120 to create a main vein.

Add some shadowing around each of the dragonflies using colours 107 and 117 in order to make the dragonflies stand out from the rest of the imagery.

“When I first saw Leann (from Crafter’s Companion) demonstrating the Spectrum Noir pencils I couldn’t wait to get my hands on them! I was truly excited at what a difference they made when added over the top of images coloured with alcohol markers. However, these pencils are also a great colouring medium in their own right.”

DESIGNER TIP…

You can buy a special blending fluid to use with wax-based pencils which adds even more versatility. It’s great to use

when you don’t want to build up an intense, rich creamy look but rather a soft, blended, almost watercolour effect. It can also be used to quickly

smooth out the grainy look of the pencil when only a light layer

has been used.

FURTHER IDEAS:

Delightful DaisiesThis card is the perfect example of how your main imagery looks when you colour using the lightest shade all over the petal first before layering over the medium tone then the darker tone.

I lightly coloured the whole petal first with 78, then coloured approximately two-thirds down the petal using 80 and then about a third of the way down using 82. I then stroked a little 13 and 96 very lightly through the petals in order to achieve different tones and interest.

The centres of the daisies were also coloured using the light to dark method, as were the leaves and stems.

Regular: Distress to Impress

Apply Picket Fence Distress Paint directly to your background stamp. Use the nylon dauber to help spread the paint evenly over the raised surface.

Cut the white cardstock to size and gently lay this on top of the stamp. Carefully but firmly brayer over the card, ensuring you go over all the edges too.

Dry the paint with a heat tool. This will help to soften and even out any areas where the paint may be thicker.

Once completely dry, add Victorian Velvet Distress Ink all over the card using a blending tool, starting from the outside edges and blending towards the centre.

Add some Aged Mahogany Distress Ink around the edges, again blending towards the centre and in with the Victorian Velvet.

Allow the ink to dry completely, or heat-set with the heat tool if you’re impatient like me, then spritz kitchen towel with a little water and wipe the residual ink off the painted background.

R anger’s Distress Paints have some pretty amazing properties which make them very different to normal acrylic paints. Firstly they are very fluid, which on the whole makes them easier to stamp with as they are more akin to inks in this respect. Secondly, once dry they are completely permanent, even though they

are water-based and will react to water in the same way the Distress Inks, Stains and Markers do while still wet. And thirdly, when they are dry on a surface they feel smooth and flat, unlike traditional acrylics where you can still feel the slight raised texture and ‘chalkiness’ once dry.

All these qualities, along with the fact that they are opaque too (as opposed to the translucent Inks, Stains and Markers), make them perfect for creating easy resist backgrounds. Using the bright white Picket Fence means that you can make a stamped background really pop when blending any colour over the top, yet the overall effect is softer and more muted than heat-emboss resist techniques due to the lovely chalky appearance of Distress Paints.

I absolutely love this soft, dreamier effect the Picket Fence resist produces. It’s great for using in vintage-style projects as I’ve shown in my example. If I had clear-embossed the text background instead of simply using the Picket Fence on my stamp, the image would have been much crisper and sharper-looking: great for clean, more graphic designs, but not so much for when you want a softer, more delicate look.

I’ve also tried out this technique with Picked Raspberry, Peacock Feathers and Spiced Marmalade to great effect (individually, I must add, although now I think of it that colour-combo might look pretty good in my art journal!), so brighter colours work brilliantly here too. I can’t wait to try out some more!

To finish the project:Create a paper flower using the two smallest flowers from the Tattered Florals die, inking with Seedless Preserves and Aged Mahogany Distress Inks before gluing the layers together. Use dimensional glue and insert a brad for the flower’s centre.

Colour some scrap card with Scattered Straw ink, then stamp with butterflies in Wild Honey and Tea Dye inks. Fussy-cut the two butterflies leaving a narrow border. Colour more scrap card with Wild Honey ink and use to die-cut the ‘Love’ sentiment from.

Distress the edges of the Picket Fence resist background from the step-by-step section, then ink edges with Gathered Twigs. Mat onto pale pink card, distressing and inking the edges of this as well, before wrapping with ribbon and tying a bow to the front as shown. Adhere all the elements and mat the whole piece onto burgundy cardstock. Attach to the front of the card blank.

Y ou can use embossing powder to make really cool backgrounds especially when you use found items to 'stamp' your own unique patterns in the powder!

For this technique, I’m stamping impressions into the unheated embossing powder on my cardstock –when the powder is heat-set, I’ve got a shiny background with a totally customised design.

Found items are ideal for making patterns, so look around your craft room, kitchen or recycling bin for jars, lids, cookie cutters, caps, bubble wrap and other texturising media.

When choosing your found items, think about combining circular shapes with straight lines for visual interest. There are lots of easy-to-find tools that can make circles, while chopsticks or the eraser end of a pencil are idealfor making lines in the embossing powder.

It’s also fun to vary the sizes of your shapes. For example, here I’m stamping with the mouth of a glass jar to make large circles. Smaller circles are created with the lid from my embossing powder jar! And I have to confess that bubble wrap is really one of my favourite stamping items and is perfect for making little repetitive circles.

As you stamp, consider that you’re actually removing the unheated embossing powder from the cardstock. It’s therefore a good idea to have a tissue or baby wipe on hand to clean off the powder from your found item before re-stamping with it. For example, I stamped with the glass jar, wiped off the powder from the mouth, then re-stamped to lift more powder from another area. Otherwise you’re simply lifting off the powder, then pressing it back onto another area of your background.

Similarly, I’ve inked the bubble wrap with embossing ink before pressing it into the powder. This is because embossing ink is sticky and lifts the powder off the cardstock more easily. You can re-stamp the bubble wrap another time or two before cleaning it off, although the impressions will be fainter.

Ready to create your own unique backgrounds? Gather your found items and your embossing powder and let’s go!

Use the brayer to cover a sheet of white cardstock with embossing ink. Roll the brayer both vertically and horizontally for even coverage.

Cover the entire piece with Metalline Green embossing powder. Tap off the excess powder and return it to the jar.

Use the mouth of a glass jar to ‘stamp’ circles into the embossing powder, using a slight twisting motion. Use the lid of the embossing powder jar to add smaller circles in the same way..

Press a section of bubble wrap into the embossing ink then stamp this onto the cardstock. Lift and repeat.

Make straight lines in the embossing powder with a chopstick, then use the blunt end (or your finger) to remove powder from all four edges of the cardstock.

Tap off excess powder (but do not return this tothe jar) and heat-set.

Step–by–step... Creating a Patterned Embossed Background

1 2 3

4 5 6

To finish the project... Stamp the feather on the patterned background and emboss with Primary Ebony embossing powder. Take care to heat only the area with the feather so you don’t over-emboss the green background.

Mat the piece on pink, white, blue and black cardstocks. Insert a silver brad through each corner. Make a 15cm x 20cm (7¾” x 5¾”) white card blank, then mount the embossed focal on top. Tie a bow in pink ribbon and glue to the bottom of the feather.

Mini Mum Goodie Bag Stamp three of the smaller sunflower and a number of leaves onto white card and colour them with Copics (Y11, Y17 and YR04 for the petals, YG13, YG17 and G99 for the leaves and E15, E35 and E37 for the centres of the sunflowers). Once coloured, fussy-cut them so they can be positioned around the stamped circular 'Mum' sentiment.

The gift bag is really simple to put together; cut two of the die shapes and fold along all the score lines. Add adhesive to the flaps and bottom flap of one of the die cuts. Stick together by attaching one of the bag bottom flaps over the other, then fold everything up and stick the flaps to their corresponding edges.

Fancy Floral TagCut the larger of the Lawn Fawn tag dies from patterned paper and the smaller from white card. Stamp 'Mother' on the smaller tag and mount this as shown using foam pads for dimension.

It is so easy to make up sentiments with the alphabet stamp sets from Lawn Fawn; in the newer sets there are multiples of each letter so larger sentiments are quicker to make up with less swapping and changing of letters. Also each letter is closely cut and on a rectangular base making lining them up a breeze.

Scrape some acrylic paint across a card blank and leave to dry while you stamp, colour and cut out a camera image. Add a die-cut film strip to the card and stamp a greeting in one frame. Add the lens to the camera with gel glue and the camera to the card, also with gel glue for some added dimension.

Phone CharmBy Joanne Allison

So many people use their phones as cameras these days – why not have a phone charm to celebrate the fact?! Stamp the Retro Camera on shrink plastic and allow to dry thoroughly before colouring with alcohol-based markers. Don’t forget the colours will intensify significantly as the plastic shrinks so don’t worry if colours look pale as they go on.

Punch a hole through the ‘flash’ on the camera and shrink the piece according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Use split rings to add the shrink plastic charm and a couple of bead dangles to a chain on a phone charm loop.

MaterialsSTAMPS: Mama Elephant – Arctic Penguins, Everyday Greetings. INKS: VersaFine Onyx Black; Stampin’ Up! Real Red. OTHER: Inkadinkadoo Stamping Mask Paper; Prismacolour pencils.

Start by stamping all the penguins from the set onto the masking paper, then carefullycut these out.

Plan your design on a piece of scrap paper first. You can also use the masks you’ve made to help with this step.

Using the black ink, stamp the penguins onto your card blank remembering to apply their respective mask after each impression so as to avoid over-stamping with another image.

You need to start with the little fella in the foreground and work backwards through the group. Remember to leave space for your sentiment!

When you are happy with your group of penguins you can stamp the sentiment.

Add colour and shading to the scene using the colouring medium of your choice; I have used Prismacolour pencils.

Useful information... Making masks of stamps is invaluable when creating one layer cards. It can be a time-consuming process but if you’re careful, they can be retained for future use by attaching them to the plastic sheets your stamps are mounted on.

To create a single frame, cut two identical strips of card. The longer the strips, the larger the heart will be.

Fasten the strips together at the very ends. I have used glue, and secured the strips with a bulldog clip until dry. You could use a stapler!

Bend the strips over in a smooth curve, then glue(or staple!) the other two ends together.

Some of the best ideas come from very simple beginnings, and you really can’t get much simpler than sticking two bits of cardstock together! This method for creating paper heart frames has been around for years and years, but the challenge to all mixed media artists out there is just how

innovative they can be with those hearts once they’ve created them!

Once you have grasped the initial basic concept of how to create the hearts from paper, you can then move on to other substrates. I have used felt fabric for my ‘Love Grows’ plaque, with the hearts being created ‘en masse’ from one square of fabric rather than individually from two strips. I simply folded the felt square in half, then stitched by machine as close as I could get to the fold. I then opened up the fabric, turned it back on itself and stitched the open edges together; stitch closer to the fold to create small hearts, or further away for larger hearts. The felt was then cut multiple times into ‘slices’ to produce each individual heart. These fabric hearts can then be used in whatever way takes your fancy!

Larger paper or card hearts can be given a back, to turn them into heart shaped shadow boxes.I have found the easiest way of doing this is to simply glue your heart to the background, then cut around it once the glue is dry. This may give you jagged or messy edges, the solution is to cover these with either thin copy paper, or old book text. Once you have your neat finish, you can ink or paint it up to your heart's content.

Hearts are a very popular and common image in any mixed media work, and adding in 3D hearts such as these can only add to the originality of your art!

“I love creating lots of different ideas from a

single theme. Creating many different projects

using the same heart design as a starting point

was great fun, in fact I think I could have made

loads more, not just three!”

Step–by–step... Simple Heart Frames

To create the main item:

1 2 3

Butterfly Prince AssemblageCreate a heart frame as detailed in the step-by-step pictures, then glue to a painted background to provide a back to the frame. Once dry, cut around the frame. To neaten the edges, cover with old book text, then paint to decorate.

Stamp the boy image onto cardstock, then colour using paint and a waterbrush. Cut out, then add a text ‘hat’ as shown in the photo. Glue some moss into the base of the heart, then attach the stamped boy as if he is sitting in the moss.

Punch three hearts from scraps of painted card, then glue to wire stems. Glue the wire stems in the moss. Glue a length of blue pompom trim all around the edge of the heart frame.

Cover two wooden spools with book text, then paint. Add punched out red hearts to the front of each spool. Glue the heart frame in between the spools, letting the spools support the shape of the heart. Stamp butterflies onto scraps of card, cut out and glue to long lengths of wire. Wrap the wire around the left-hand spool, and bend to position the butterflies in their desired position.

FURTHER IDEAS:

Love GrowsCreate a painty background on the wooden plaque. Stamp the stars and text stamp using black ink. Draw black and white stripy stems onto scrap card, cut out and attach to the background as shown. Create some red felt hearts as described in the main introduction, then glue them in place at the top of the stems. Write the ‘love grows’ phrase using acrylic ink and a waterbrush.

To create a three layered heart: cut six strips of card, three identical pairs. The pairs need to be of varying length, a short, medium and long pair.

Glue (or staple) the strips together. The longer pair need to be innermost, with a medium strip placed either side, then a short strip placed either side of the medium strips.

Bend all six strips over in a curve, then glue (or staple) them all together.

Triple Layer Hanging HeartCreate a 3D heart from polymer clay. While it’s still soft, push a loop made from craft wire into the top of the heart. Bake according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Once cold, paint with red paint. Thread red cord through the craft wire loop.

Create a triple layered heart according to the instructions in the step-by-step pictures, using card that has been painted and stamped on both sides. While assembling, place the red cord in the card strip ‘sandwich’, then glue at the same time. This way, the cord will be secured. Tie a knot in the cord so it can act as a hanger.

DESIGNER TIP...

The thinner the card you use to create your hearts,

the easier it is to bend into a nice smooth curve. Experiment with different card weights to

find the balance between a sturdy frame and a

nice curve.

Sponge a piece of cardstock with the three Distress Inks. Flick on some drops of water and dab off the

excess with a paper towel. Allow to dry, then stamp the branches in orange and pink around the edges.

Punch or cut circles in three different sizes and sponge with the Distress Inks, but use only two colours

on each circle. Stamp the insects with black StazOn. Bleach away some of the colour from the insects

and with the pencils add new colours. Define the edges of the circles by sponging with blue ink. Glue the

circles to the card and mat as shown.

Black, and stamp the sentiment in line with the bottom of the image.

Colour the bees with charcoal and orange markers, going over the

orange at the sides for depth. Colour in the sprinkles with pink and

blue. Add pink strokes to the cupcake case then dilute and spread the

colour with a waterbrush. Add blue to the candle and dilute and spread.

Colour flame with orange. Add pale grey shadows to the bees’ faces,

wings, icing and grass. Add Stickles to wings and flame. Add a strip

of bright blue card underneath the white card, leaving a quarter-inch

showing, then mount onto a hot pink square card blank.

It’s A Boy!By Gea Leegsma-Vogt

This is a simple technique that will make a cute, but somewhat

different, card for a new baby. Die- or hand-cut a heart shape

from paper or card, and place the resulting negative shape over

white card. Ink the heart shape with Spiced Marmalade. Then

stamp the three ladybirds onto the card in Tempting Turquoise (for

the dad and baby ladybird) and Melon Mambo (for the mummy

ladybird). Stamp the text with StazOn on a separate piece of paper

and ink the paper with the Spiced Marmalade. Place enamel dots

randomly on the card, and draw some lines with a black pen.

Watercolour WingsBy Clare Buswell

For a quick and easy watercolour effect, stamp the dragonflies and

butterflies onto a piece of white card. Randomly apply droplets of water

using a paintbrush, and while still wet apply droplets of Distress Stain in

Salty Ocean, allowing colours to drip and bleed. Apply more droplets of

water if necessary.

Leave to dry, trim, adhere some ribbon and attach to a card base. Stamp

the sentiment in black ink onto another piece of card and adhere to the

card base using foam pads. Add a bow to finish.

This cute little hedgehog looked as though he should be

looking at something specific, so I added the bee from

bee stamp from the Botanical stamp set, stamp on to the

top area of the card with the black ink.

Paint a bottle cap with black gesso, put a torn circle of

book page inside the bottle cap and colour with the

different Distress Inks. Make the word FLY using a Dymo

machine and stick in the centre of the bottle cap. Add a

couple of folded pieces of pink ribbon to the back of the

cap and stick to the card.

Mega Flakes. Rub a tiny amount of Goldfinger Metallic

Paint to the edges of the bee. Stick to the card just above

the stamped grass. Mount on a black card blank.

Quit Bugging Me!

By Claudia Neubacher

First I applied tiny dots of acrylic colours directly from the bottles randomly

across a piece of A4 heavy white card. I spread the colours using a brayer,

lifting the brayer off the paper several times during the process. This way I

got oval shapes rather than long streaks. I also made sure to stop brayering

before the colours started to become too 'muddied'.

While the coloured card was set aside to dry I stamped my bug images onto

some white card using black archival ink. I cut them out and distressed the

edges. I glued the stamped bugs panels onto the brayer-coloured card and

cut them out again, leaving a frame around the stamped panels. The new

panels were distressed too and then arranged on a card blank.

Once I was content with my arrangement I glued all the elements in place

and rounded the card's edges using a corner punch. For a finish I partiallly

stamped some more bugs images directly onto the card's background. I love

how the fragility of the insects contrasts with the forceful dots of colour!

Dreams Have Wings By Joanne Allison

Although it looks like a one layer card, it’s best to

do this on a separate card front as the amount of

water is likely to cause it to buckle. Just use plenty

of adhesive to stick the finished piece to a card

base for a one layer look.

Heat-emboss the dragonfly and then spritz the card

generously with plain water. Use a damp paint

brush dipped into a little ink to add colour and

allow it to run on the wet card – this will give you

a lovely randomness so that no two cards will ever

be exactly the same. Some Wink of Stella gives the

wings a touch of shimmer to finish.

Embrace ImperfectionBy Elizabeth Robinson

My background was created with Distress Inks, starting on one side of the

card with Wild Honey and from the other side with Picked Raspberry, then

using Wild Honey again to blend the two colours together.

I stamped the sentiment, then added the ink spot circles to create a

border around the edges of the card. I then stamped out two sets of moth

wings, adding a stamped body to one set and a zipper embellishment to

the other.

I mounted the card panel to a black card blank, and added an assortment

of blue self-adhesive gems randomly to finish.

Sunshine In A JarBy Lydia Brooke Evans

First cut the panel using the smaller of the Femme Frames dies and stamp

the jar and the sentiment in place using the Hybrid ink. Using the Crystal

Clear Die Set 2, cut away the inside of the jar and then cut a piece of

acetate slightly larger than this piece.

To get the fireflies to fly in different ways I stamped two of them on one

side of the acetate, flipped the acetate over and then stamped the other

using the StazOn ink. To colour in the fireflies colour on the opposite side

to which you have stamped them, because both the Copics and StazOn

ink are solvent based so will 'bleed' into each other and give a dirty look.

Add the acetate behind the die-cut piece and add foam tape around the

whole piece on the back and fill with sequins to create a shaker.

Die-cut the lid using the other die set, and colour with Copics before

adding to the top of the jar. Some twine and a little tag finishes the card.

Punch paper circles out of firm paper with a circle punch. Tear strips of fabric. Make them 2.5cm (1”) wide and approximately 40cm (16”) long.

Cover the paper circles with double-sided tape. You could use Tacky Glue as well but in that case you should work very precisely to avoid stains on the fabric.

Make a tiny hole in the centre of the circle with scissors or a cutter. Just carve a small ‘cross’ in the centre without measuring.

Ialways try to incorporate different media into my art work. I love playing with paint, gel medium,

gesso, molding paste, stamps… and fabric. For these projects I created spiral flowers using strips of fabric. I really like the style of these ‘shabby chic’ flowers. I also made an art journal from scratch, as well as a card and a tag to show you how well my fabric flowers fit on different projects.

First I will explain how to make the front and back covers of the art journal. Apply a layer of gesso to both canvas boards and allow to dry completely. Stamp a variety of PaperArtsy stamps with black Archival ink onto tissue paper. Glue the tissue paper on the canvas boards with gel medium. Add pieces of cheesecloth randomly over the surface, then seal with gel medium. Add another thin layer of gesso on top after drying.

Use the JOFY PS007 stencil and moulding paste to add the bullrushes. Add dots with punchinella in the same way. Colour the surface with Gelatos by scribbling them over the surface then using a paintbrush and some water to spread the colours.

Stamp images and text randomly with StazOn Teal Blue and Sunflower Yellow over both covers. Add shadow with Gelatos and highlights with white paint. Cover the back of each board with patterned paper.

Create three fabric flowers from strips of gingham fabric as shown in the steps. Glue the fabric flowers to the front cover. Attach a torn piece of tissue paper underneath each flower. Use white ribbon to make the stems, glue them in place. Add five Prima Sculpture flowers to finish it off.

When you are ready to bind the journal, cut 24 sheets of 300grs watercolour paper to size for the inner pages. Remember to cut these slightly smaller than the covers. Watercolour paper is an ideal base for all kinds of techniques, however you can always use whatever type of paper you wish.

Punch ten holes in each cover and in each page with the Bind-it-All. Use black 1” wires to bind the book. If you don’t own a Bind-it-All and you are unable to borrow one from a friend, I would recommend simply binding the art journal with two metal rings.

Why not try applying this technique to a traditional wooden framed canvas? It would look fabulous onthe wall!

Step–by–step... Fabric Flowers

1 2 3

WHY NOT TRY?...

You can easily make fabric flowers like this with pieces of ribbon

instead of strips of fabric. The flowers will be smaller and flatter, perfect to use

inside an artjournal.

Flower TagFor the background of the tag again follow the same steps as for the journal covers. Attach a torn shipping tag to the top of the tag.

Create the flowers with the JOFY PS008 stencil and light molding paste.

Colour the background and the flowers with Faber-Castell Gelatos and stamp randomly.

Create a white fabric flower and stick it to the bottom of the tag. Put a piece of torn tissue paper underneath. Glue a small orange sculpture flower in the centre.

Add trimmings, cord, ribbon and a tag topper as shown.

DESIGNER TIP...

Light moulding paste creates a highly textured,

absorbent surface. I love the flexible, opaque and matte

finish! It works great in combination with the

Project: Lace Effect Stamping

Apply embossing ink through the stencil onto the vellum, cover with a white embossing powder and heat-set. Repeat to form long strips, ensuring they will be long enough to reach all the way around your jar.

Cut the embossed vellum into long strips and attach as shown around the outside of the clean, dry jar, using double-sided tape.

Stamp the flowers onto vellum using embossing ink (VersaMark). Carefully, add Red Geranium embossing powder to the outer petals and detailing as shown.

Pour Tree Branch embossing powder on the uncovered areas of the flowers, then heat-set and cut out each one.

Use a paintbrush and water to add Inktense colour to the flowers, allowing the vellum to wrinkle as you do this.

Add a garden wire stem to each flower by curling one end into a flattened coil then gluing it firmly in place (a wet adhesive is best for this). Once dry, arrange your flowers in the vellum-covered jar.

Having bought craft tools which have been designed with a specific season in mind I love to look for other ways to use them; this gives them added value. The Tim Holtz Holiday Knit Layering Stencil design

reminded me of vintage lace when I envisioned it separated into individual strips. In order to achieve that delicate look of lace with the stencil I decided to use a white embossing powder on vellum. A lace-covered vase in a magazine article gave me the perfect starting point for using my handmade vellum lace.

The real flowers displayed in the magazine were delicate spring blooms with deep, warm hues of red and fuchsia. Using vellum as the basis for recreating them worked well as it is a lighter weight than most types of card and paper, yet retains a strength that will withstand the use of mixed media on it. I also find that using embossing powder to outline delicate images on vellum can make them easier to cut out by hand.

When choosing a medium to colour the vellum flowers, I needed something that would provide a strong, deep colour. Inktense Blocks have a concentrated pigment that mixes well with water for easy application. Happily, as vellum tends to wrinkle when water is applied to it, this meant that it also gave a more realistic shaping and texture to the petals.

After creating the flowers I needed to find a way to add stems to them. In the October 2014 issue of Craft Stamper magazine Trish Latimer showed how to use wire to create a 3D wire stand (‘Stand Up For Your Art’, page 59). Using the same process with green garden wire, I produced individual flower stems. The coiled section of each stem was then glued to the reverse of the flowers, allowing them to be bent into shape once dry.

Get out the tissue paper and Soft Gel to make a charming stained glass-style window hanging. By Riikka Kovasin

Project: Stained-glass Effect

Start by making some patterned tissue paper. Use Archival Ink to stamp different designs on white tissue paper. You don't have to get a perfect impression as you are going to clip the tissue paper into pieces anyway.

Gather some different colours of tissue paper and cut into pieces as shown. Try to have different sizes. Keep the colour wheel in mind and try to avoid having complementary colours in your mix.

Put a sheet of white tissue paper on your non-stick craft sheet and start adhering the cut-up tissue paper pieces on top using the Soft Gel. Mix different colours and let the pieces overlap creating new colours.

When you have covered the area you want, put another sheet of white tissue paper on top and then give this ‘sandwich’ a coat of Soft Gel. This seals all the pieces inside and gives a lovely smooth surface.

Cut thin strips of black cardstock and arrange them on top of the ‘glass’ to resemble a stained glass window. Use Soft Gel to adhere the pieces in place. Let dry completely.

Cut the ‘stained glass’ to the size you wish, then frame it using thicker pieces of black cardstock. You can also add thicker cardstock or even chipboard on the reverse to make the frames more rigid.

Don't you just love it when a particular product gets your ideas flying and makes you want to explore all the possibilities it has? I adore that feeling! This project was inspired by just such a product – Soft Gel.

I fell in love with the effect this medium has on white tissue paper! It fades the edges of tissue paper completely, making the end result much sturdier than before. I started to think how I would use this property in a project. As the medium gives white tissue paper see-through qualities an idea started growing in my head – to make a stained glass window hanging!

Real stained glass designs have a lead or metal framework so I needed to find something to mimic this. Then I remembered doing a sort of faux stained glass craft in school. It also involved tissue paper but no media, so the end result was really fragile. What we used for the frame was black cardstock, thick enough not to let light shine through. For the window hanging I just cut thin pieces of the cardstock and arranged them to form a sunburst pattern.

If you want to mimic the stained glass windows even further, you could first sketch your idea and then cut the tissue paper pieces accordingly. But I'm a bit of an impatient crafter and found the free-form adhering of the pieces quite relaxing and soothing. The only thing you need to keep in mind, though, is the colour theory. As the pieces of paper overlap, the colours mix. So if you mix orange with blue, for example, you'll get a brown.

So get your non-stick craft mat out and start turning pieces of paper into glass!

Soft Gel Glass“I'm always on the lookout for

some fun handmade gift ideas for grandparents. I know that they love kids’ crafts, so I'm seeing a birthday

present possibility in this! And I know my kids love the idea of getting messy with ‘Mommy's media’!”

Glue gun glue is strong, flexible, water-resistant and can be manipulated into any sort of shape when melted in the gun. I can assure you that once you’ve read this Masterclass you won’t look at your glue gun in

the same way again; you’ll be itching to try out at least one of these techniques.

It all started with the stencil idea which came from a book by Traci Bautista on collage techniques. I saw some beautiful stencil designs all created with a glue gun, and being a lover of any sort of stencil I had to try it for myself. My poor glue gun had been neglected for so long and I found it lying in the bottom of my tool box, rejected in favour of less fussy, tacky red tape and gel glue with a super precision tip, and I almost forgot I had one. The glue is actually strong enough to make some pretty amazing things. Creating my first stencil was one of those magic moments which got me all fired up to find out what else this underrated little tool could do.

Twice during the course of experiments I had to go out and buy new glue refills, not only because I needed a whole heap of practice but also because I wanted to try out more and more ideas.

I did have a lot of fails too. For example, don’t try creating stencils or pearls on a cutting mat and expect them to come off easily because they won’t! And don’t try taking an impression of something which has a porous surface because it’ll stick to it… hard. It is glue after all! So here is what I came up with and the techniques for doing it so you can learn from my mistakes.

Technique 1: Making a stencil This is an absolute genius way to create your own stencils. It does require a steady hand and a bit of practice but once you master it you’ll be hooked. The end product is tough, can be used with all sorts of media and is washable too.

Using a white board marker or other sort of washable pen, draw a design directly on a heat-resistant mat.

Once the glue has gone milky it’s set and can now be lifted off the mat. Use it with sprays or paints and wash it with soapy water to use it again.

Follow the lines with the gun slowly and steadily. Any of the stringy bits can easily be cut away once it’s set.

DESIGNER TIP...

A heat gun will come in handy when creating

embellishments. If you make a mess of it the first time, the

glue can be re-melted with a heat gun allowing you

to try again.

Technique 2: Using glueas textureGlue as texture can be applied in a couple of different ways. One is to add the texture to a project then use it to resist water-based inks or paints; a second is to paint over it with gesso so it’s possible to paint over the glue completely.

Technique 3: MouldingMaking embellishments from textured items is so much fun and easy to do. It’s best to choose a non-porous item with an inverted or debossed design. It’s possible to use silicone moulds for chocolate making or FIMO clay for this too. Either the glue can be melted into the mould or the item can be pressed down onto the glue.

2

3

Draw a design if necessary on a piece of thick card or mixed media paper. Melt the glue over the design slowly. Allow to cool and set.

I found a broken piece of a brooch which was perfect to create an embellishment from. Smear Vaseline over the surface first to help the glue embellishment release easily once set.

Melt a pool of glue directly onto the mat, approximately the same size and shape of the piece you are using as a mould. Press this down onto the glue and wait a while before lifting it off.

Once cool (with metal this takes a few seconds longer) you can lift the mould off. The resulting embellishment can now be trimmed and decorated using Perfect Pearls.

Paint over the whole design with gesso, I used black gesso for a more dramatic effect. Leave to dry.

Paint over again with metallic paint and wipe the paint off some parts with a sponge.

Technique 4: Creating pearlsOh my goodness, these are so cute, you’ll never need to buy pearls again. It takes a while to master the technique to get them perfectly round so don’t be discouraged if they don’t look perfect first time.

Technique 5: Creating a printing plateThis won’t give you a perfect stamp unless you’re very lucky. The surface of the design will be a bit bumpy and uneven as the glue comes out of the gun, but by flipping it over onto the mat or re-heating it with a heat tool it’s possible to flatten out the surface of the glue to be able to use it successfully as a stamp or printing plate. It can be used with paint as well as ink; both will give you different results.

Drop a little blob of glue down and, before lifting the gun off, just wind the stringy bit around the blob a little, creating a round shape. Using a piece of cardboard as a base, draw a design first to use as a guide

for the glue.

Leave to cool then use Perfect Pearls to brush over the surface and give them that pearly look.

Melt the glue over the design working slowly and carefully.

You can also create the little pearls directly on the mat and colour them with alcohol pens. They can be saved and added to projects later on.

If the glue is still hot, flip the whole thing over onto the mat to flatten the bumps off, or if the glue has already set, re-heat with a heat tool to make it a bit softer before flipping it over onto the mat.

TweetOn a piece of mixed media paper, draw out a block pattern which you will follow with the glue gun. Carefully and slowly doodle the lines with the gun. When it’s set, gesso the whole page in white (Technique 2) which is a good base to add colour with spray inks and a baby wipe. Allow the spray to puddle in the boxes.

Stamp the birds, cage and sentiment on a piece of scrap paper and cut them out to glue onto the arrangement.

Pick out the raised portions of the glue with a finger and some black paint. It’s best to use a finger for this as you really get better accuracy that way. Add a few pearls (Technique 4) and some felt hearts to finish.

FlySpray through the stencil you’ve created (Technique 1) a few times at random across the page with Tattered Angels sprays. Stamp the bird cages over the page and add the love birds to one of the cages. Draw a line from the top of the cages to the top of the page.

Use a piece of jewellery or a clay mould to create wings with glue (Technique 3). Brush these with Perfect Pearls to give them shimmer. Write the word ‘Fly’ on a heat-resistant mat and follow the lines with the glue gun. When the glue has set, lift it off and paint it with black gesso (Technique 2). Use Picket Fence Distress paint to pick out the highlights on the wings and word.

Ironically, glue gun glue is too thick to use to glue the elements onto the page, so I actually used gel medium for this. Finally, add a few pearly blobs directly on the page too.

One Stamp, Three Ways

We all want more from our stamps, so in this regular feature we put their versatility to the test by challenging one designer to use one stamp in three different ways! By Alix Merriman

INKognito Butterfly

“I love butterfly images and I love the INKognito range of beautiful, artsy, splattery images, so selecting this single stamp to use in my cards was an easy choice. This, as well as the rest

of the INKognito range, would look fab in an art journal too.”

Live Laugh LoveI wanted to accentuate the gorgeous splatteriness of the butterfly stamp’s design by creating a watercolour effect. This was achieved by spritzing it with spray inks, quickly stamping once onto scrap paper, then spritzing the stamp with a mini mister and stamping again to make a second generation impression. The Dylusions ink sprays and new Distress Stain Sprays are both wonderfully rich and vibrant and heavily pigmented, so the spritzed water allowed the different colours to meld and blend together perfectly without watering down the colours too much.

I used the free cover stamp from our July 2013 issue(also designed by Visible Image) to make a striking and bold background which contrasted nicely with the colourful and ethereal-looking watercolour butterfly. The background was then coloured with blended Distress Inks in coordinating shades.

Main Pic: Create Your FutureI adore the look of alcohol inks on acetate, so shiny and pretty and strokable! It’s fun to just choose three or four colours, squeeze a few drops of each onto your ink applicator along with some Blending Solution, then dab and daub away over a sheet of acetate; you never know exactly what the result will be but it almost always looks great and is always such fun to do!

I didn’t have the right shade of turquoise in my alcohol ink collection so I improvised by mixing bright green Botanical with the bluer Stream (just by squeezing one ink on top of the other on the felt applicator pad) and the result made a good match with the Peacock Feathers I have used in the other two cards.

Once I was happy with my glossy background, I turned it over and stamped on the reverse with black StazOn ink, then trimmed to fit my card blank. To avoid using potentially messy and unsightly adhesive, I attached the acetate using mini decorative clips from my scrapbooking stash. Simples!

DESIGNER TIP...

Remember to turn over your alcohol-inked acetate

and stamp on the reverse side; as you need to use a solvent

ink on acetate, this would rub off any alcohol ink already

applied and ruin your beautiful background.

Irresistible CreationI can’t get enough of resist techniques at the moment, the magic of wiping off and revealing a clean stamped image beneath a colourful layer never gets old for me! For this design I applied Matte Mod Podge to my stamped butterfly using an old fine paintbrush, allowing it to dry completely before overstamping with some inked and water-spritzed bubble wrap. Once that had dried, I removed the overstamping from the butterfly with a baby wipe to reveal the crisp image beneath the beautiful coloured blobs.

I tore the edges around the butterfly by hand as I thought it would look too neat if I used a ruler to make a perfectly straight line; its neatness would have jarred with the delightfully messy appearance of the ink-splattered butterfly. Using one of the torn strips in the bottom left corner of the card blank offset the balance of my design just right.

WHY NOT TRY...

using some artist’s masking fluid as a resist

instead of Mod Podge, like Teresa Abajo has done for her cute and quirky Stampotique project

Regular: All in the Details

Get a bit more up-close and personal with some of this month’s amazing makes. Here’s where we get to show you some of the gorgeous details that you might miss at first glance…

All in the Details

Journal Your Art Out on p.58Up close you can appreciate the beautiful texture of the moulding paste when layered on top of the cheesecloth strips on Anneke’s handmade art journal cover. Just gorgeous!

Mothering Sunday Suitcase on p.6See the beautiful, delicate painting of the stamped images that adorn the top of Elizabeth’s decorated mini suitcase! Notice her use of shading and highlights on the butterfly’s wings for added realism.

Heart to Heart on p.46Don’t you just adore Trish Latimer’s fresh and funky colour combos? I wish I could be as bold as she is when it comes to choosing shades for my projects, the woman is a veritable colour virtuoso!

Distress To Impress on p.76Here you can see the brilliance of Distress Paints in action: the white stamping appears textured and you can see the variation in pigment, yet it’s also obvious from this angle that the paint has dried completely smooth and flat. Amazing!

Vellum on a Vase on p.62Check out how Jenny’s use of vellum to create her flowers has really added to their realism; their softly crumpled appearance and the curve of the vellum petals make them look so much like the real thing.

Dragonflies & Daisies on p.29You can appreciate Kay’s clever layering technique when colouring with Spectrum Noir Blendable Pencils from this photo. Her use of textured and sanded cardstock highlights the delicate shading to a tee.
