I ’ve just dusted off my stamps, realised I desperately need some new inkpads and I’m really excited to be back editing Craft Stamper again. It’s been quite a while but I’m here for a few issues to make sure the
magazine remains in tiptop shape while we recruit and train up a new editor. Last time I was here I was pregnant with my daughter (who’s now 6) and so sad that I couldn’t take on Craft Stamper permanently as I was about to go on maternity leave. Almost 7 years later I return after a second maternity leave with my son, who is now almost 18 months, hasn’t time flown!
I’ve worked for Traplet for 14 years editing Practical Crafts, Scrapbook Magic, Beads & Beyond, Sewing World and more recently working on the website and special issues. It’s funny how my latest craft craze directly relates to the magazine I’m working on, so now it’s time to move the fabric and beads aside and get back to some serious stamping, it feels like a home coming, my craft career started over 20 years ago working for a rubber stamp company as a designer! I even designed a project for the very first issue of Craft Stamper!
I’m so excited by the great products featured this month, we have a letterpress project on page 26 where Lydia Brooke Evans uses a simple kit to create the deeply embossed look of traditional letterpress. On page 42 Liesbeth Fidder has used an adorable die cut to create cute mini milk carton boxes, I can think of so many uses for these, I’m sure you will too! And Brushos! – Wow where have they been all my life! Take a look on page 10 to see how Kay Carley has created beautiful summer skies with these little pots of magic, more to come on Brushos next month too!
We have a great Masterclass on Texture paste, beautiful Ocean inspired Ready Set Stamp cards and be sure to check out Jenny Marples stunning stitched journal cover, it sure is a neat idea, you can slip the cover off when working on the pages inside so that you never get accidental spills and spats spoiling your cover artwork. Sewing is so popular at themoment too; it’s great to combine simple sewing and stamping!
Happy creating!

Distressed Shadow Stencilling & Stamping
Distress to Impress:
Create a clever shadow effect with double
stamping or stencilling to give 3D looks without the bulk.By Anna-Karin Evaldsson
“I love to give dimension to my projects and the shadow stamping or stencilling technique lets me do that without
adding any bulk. It is amazing how a simple shadow can create such a three dimensional look. The technique is also easy and
works with a large range of stamps and stencils.”

Position the stencil over a piece of kraft cardstock. Sponge Antique Linen through the stencil with a mini round Ink Blending Tool. Avoid having too much paint on the tool so that it doesn’t seep underneath the stencil.
When the paint is dry, position the stencil again, making sure you move it a little bit to the side and down, so that you get a shadow. Sponge embossing ink through the stencil.
Cover with clear embossing powder and pour the leftovers back into the jar. Melt with a heat gun.Now you will clearly see the cool shadow effect.
Ink the edges with Walnut Stain and distress them with a paper distresser tool. If you want a less distressed look, skip this step.
Mix a tiny bit of water into Cracked Pistachio paint and splatter on the background. Pick the paint up with a paintbrush and tap the handle of the brush to create the splatters.
For even more texture, use the Spritzer tool and a Black Soot marker to airbrush black ink here and there on the background. Wipe the ink off from the embossed areas.
S hadow stamping or over-stamping is a favourite technique of mine, which can be done in several different ways and using various inks and paints. It works great both with stamps and stencils, as I will show you in this article.
Shadow stamping is a great technique that creates texture and dimension, without adding any bulk. The shadow effect makes the image or letters appear almost three-dimensional. It is also very easy to do and you probably already have the supplies needed at home.
Because of the time of the year, I made two Father’s Day cards, but if you change the sentiments, the cards can work for many occasions. Or try the techniques in your art journal or on a scrap-booking page. I used stamps; stencils, ink and paint by Tim Holtz, but you can try the technique with many different types of stamps and stencils.
If you use wood or cling mounted stamps, particularly if they are detailed, a stamp positioner is a great help for this technique. With a stamp positioner you can easier control the second stamped impression and make sure that it ends up where you want it to be. With clear stamps, bold stamps and stencils, you don’t need a positioner, and sometimes the unpredictability of the second impression might be just what you are looking for.
The backgrounds here are done on kraft and manila cardstock, but the technique works well on many different surfaces. Experiment to see what you like the best. If you are working on a light surface, stamp the shadow with darker ink as in the second example, instead of heat embossing it with clear powder, which might not show so much on a light paper.
I’ve done some heat embossing on these cards and, as always, please take care when you use a heat gun so that you don’t burn yourself.

Distressed Shadow Stencilling & Stamping
To finish the project:Die-cut labels from manila cardstock and stamp with images using Jet Black ink. Colour and ink the images and labels with Distress Ink and finish by spritzing Black Soot ink on them, as for the background. Distress metallic gears and a number brad with Cracked Pistachio paint. Layer the stamped labels, Industrious stickers, and metallic pieces on the background and mat on kraft-core cardstock. Distress the edges of the cardstock, as well as of the folded kraft-core cardstock base. Use a Chit Chat sticker as a sentiment.

FURTHER IDEAS:
Remember the nowFor this card I have used a stamp instead of a stencil. Smear Distress Inks on a craft sheet, mist with water and press the manila cardstock into the ink. Leave to dry and die cut a Postage Stamp from the inked paper. Stamp the number stamp twice with embossing ink and heat emboss with white embossing powder. You can also stamp it with paint, as in the first example; just remember to immediately clean your stamp. Use a stamp positioner for exact placement and stamp again with Pumice Stone ink, giving a shadow to the right and below. Stamp the background with a postage stamp image and Cracked Pistachio ink. Add texture with the Spritzer tool.
Die-cut two labels from the inked manila cardstock and stamp with a sentiment and a hand. Stamp an inkbottle on another piece of cardstock and cut out. Adhere the postage panel on folded and distressed kraft-core cardstock and embellish with the die cut labels, gears, a Game Spinner and Industrious stickers.

Project: Stamp and Die Cut
Place the Cloud stencil at the top of a 10cm x19.5cm watercolour card panel. Choose one of the cloud formations and sponge VersaMark ink through it. Thoroughly emboss with Crystal embossing powder.
Sprinkle a little of the Prussian Blue Brusho overthe top two thirds of the panel then heavily spritzit with water. Use a wet paintbrush to move the paint around.
Whilst the panel is still wet sprinkle a tiny amount of the Lemon Brusho onto the base of the panel. Spritz with water and spread it out with the paintbrush that still contains Prussian Blue from the last step (these two colours will mix together to form a nice light green).
Dry the panel with a heat gun and if necessary blot with kitchen towel to either lift off excess water or paint. Position the Wildflower stencil so that the tall wildflowers are in the bottom right corner and sponge through Weathered Wood and a little of Bundled Sage ink.
Stamp the tall flower along the base of the panel using Bundled Sage and lightly colour with HB1, HB3, CT2 and LG2. Colouring them so that they are behind the sponged wildflowers.
Stamp two images of the tall flower and one image of the row of flowers onto watercolour card using Bundled Sage ink then use the corresponding dies to cut them out. Colour these flowers using the Spectrum Noir pens.
E arlier this year Sheena Douglass launched her Perfect Partners rubber stamp sets and corresponding dies – not only can you use them separately you can also team them together to speed up the cutting out process. This project features The Country life set with matching dies, Willowherb and
Loosestrife.
The normal way of using stamps and dies together is to stamp your image, place the die over the top and run it through a die-cutting machine, however with these Sheena recommends die-cutting your image first, inking up your stamp and placing it on the table rubber side up and then placing your die-cut down onto the inked surface and pressing with your fingers, as it’s easier to line it up perfectly this way. So although in my instructions I’ve said to stamp your image and then die-cut it you may actually prefer to do it the other way around to achieve a better alignment. Try it both ways and you decide!
You may have already noticed that there are no black or brown outlines to the stamped images and this is because I wanted the flowers to look as if they had been painted as opposed to stamped. This was achieved by stamping the flowers with the Bundled Sage inkpad and then colouring over this ink with Spectrum Noir markers. I also chose not to blend my inks in order to give an ‘impressionistic’ feel to the flowers.
All of the stamping, colouring and painting was created on watercolour card which you don’t normally associate with alcohol markers. But as I wasn’t trying to achieve a smooth blend with my colouring it meant that I could still use my favourite colouring medium and combine them with my current love of Brusho which works fabulously on watercolour card!
Brusho are little pots of watercolour powders and are just such fun to use – many of the pots have a few different colours of powders within the one pot which give the most amazing effects. For this project I used Prussian Blue, Lemon and Violet and these have just one colour of powder in the pot.
Summer Skies “Having never used matching stamps and
dies before when I saw the new Perfect
Partners stamps and dies by Sheena Douglass I
couldn’t wait to try them out! I am normally quite good at cutting out, but
even I would think twice about tackling that row of flowers (Willowherb) so to have such a detailed corresponding die is
fantastic!”
Step–by–step... Stamp and Die Cut

DESIGNER TIP…
When using Brusho only sprinkle a small
amount of powder, you’ll be surprised how little
you need! You can always add more if
you need to.

To finish the Project:Trim the wording panel to size, edge it with Weathered Wood ink and add to the flower panel. Layer this finished panel to a slightly larger black panel and adhere to a folded card blank.
Using the two green Spectrum Noir pens add some freehand grasses to the base of the panel to give the flowers somewhere to sit then stamp a couple of birds into the sky area using Weathered Wood ink.
Sprinkle Shabby Green embossing enamel around the base of the panel and heat it from underneath. Stick the tall flowers to the right side of the panel, snip a few flowers from the row and stick these to the left side.
Stamp the wording with black Versafine onto a piece of watercolour card, sprinkle a small amount of Prussian Blue Brusho and move it around with a wet paintbrush. Blot with kitchen towel if needed and dry with a heat gun.
FURTHER IDEAS:
7 8 9
All In A RowThis is the simplest card of this set as this one doesn’t contain any die-cutting or layering of imagery. Begin by stamping the row of flowers at the base of a watercolour panel using Bundled Sage ink, then colour the flowers, grass and base of the panel with Spectrum Noir markers. Sponge and emboss some clouds into the sky area as in step one of the main card and then sprinkle a small amount of Prussian Blue Brusho onto the top third of the panel. Heavily spritz with water and use a wet paintbrush to bring some of the blue down over the flowers keeping the intense colour at the top. Whilst the panel is still wet, sprinkle a tiny amount of Lemon Brusho just under the clouds and use the wet paintbrush to blend it.

Project: Stamp and Die Cut
Additional materials...• Brusho: Violet
A Field of FlowersFor this card not only did I want to elongate the flowers but I also wanted to create a slightly denser look. Begin by sponging and embossing the clouds onto your panel and then adding the Brusho watercolours, this time adding Violet Brusho to the bottom third of the panel. Stamp two rows of flowers onto watercolour card, die-cut them and colour with Spectrum Noirs. Cut one of the rows of flowers into a few pieces, avoiding cutting the overlapping flowers. Place the uncut row onto the base of the panel (roughly in the middle), and then arrange the larger cut pieces to either side of it and the smaller pieces behind some of the middle row. When you are happy with your arrangement stick into place. Don’t feel that you have to use all of the flowers.
Tall and SmallWith this creation I started off in the same way as ‘All In A Row’ but took it a step further by bringing in the tall flowers too. Once you have stamped and coloured your row of flowers, sponged and embossed your clouds and added the Brusho watercolour, stamp one of the birds with Weathered Wood and then dab over it with a damp paintbrush to fade it into the background a bit. Stamp three images of the tall flower with Bundled Sage ink, die-cut them and colour with Spectrum Noirs then add them to the panel.

BookmarkThis is really just a smaller version of the main card, but I wanted to show that you can still add quite a bit of imagery to a small panel without overpowering it if you do it in a harmonizing way. After preparing your background with the clouds and Brusho watercolours, take the Wildflower stencil and sponge through some of the small flowers using Bundled Sage ink. Add just a few freehand grasses using the DG3 marker. Stamp, die-cut and colour the flowers and just snip a couple of the flowers off the row and add these to the bookmark allowing the tall flower to take centre stage.

“I wanted a vibrant and exciting journal cover that would look great and also inspire me to create more art on the pages inside. It’s great that this cover
is sturdy, flexible and easily removable too so that there is no danger of me ruining it when more inks, paints, pastes and sprays come out to play!”

Project: Stamp and Stitch
After cutting a piece of pre-washed and ironed calico (larger than your journal cover) apply black gesso to honeycomb edge stamp using a piece of Phat Foam and a spatula.
Stamp horizontally along both of the longer edges of the calico in a random pattern. Repeat this process using the stitched edge design (having bent it on the stamping block).
Mix some of the first colour of paint with a little water, then paint onto the calico following the stamped lines. Repeat using the other two colours creating uneven stripes.
Spray the surface of the painted calico with water and allow the painted lines to blend into each other. Where they blend new colours will be created. Allow to dry.
Randomly stamp large, medium and small honeycomb and open circles onto the dried calico (using the method from Step 1) with the same paint colours as the painted stripes.
Cut wadding to the same size as the cover, andcut a piece of the painted fabric slightly larger.Pin together, stitch using black cotton followingthe stamped stitched lines.
W hen you get a new journal it's fun to personalise the cover, but when you start working on the pages inside there’s a danger that this decoration may get damaged. It’s also better to be able to have the journal lying flat when using the inner pages. So I decided to create a removable, padded, stamped and stitched fabric cover for mine.
I love how acrylic paints blend together and bleed into each other to create new colours when you add water to them, even when applied to fabric. And why choose to use calico? It’s readily available, affordable, and with a close weave to it, those finer images will show up much better when stamped.
I made sure the calico was washed before I got started to remove any size (coating) that might adversely affect the application of paint. The calico was also ironed flat as you are likely to get imperfect stamping if the surface is wrinkled or creased.
When adding the mount board sections to the reverse of each side I deliberately allowed for a gap along the centre of the cover. This meant the spine remained as flexible as possible to help the journal close properly and make removing the cover much easier too.
Adding wadding to the reverse of the cover gives your journal extra protection from those knocks and bangs when you’re out and about. Using it on the reverse of the stamped circular embellishments gives them extra dimension and added texture too.

To finish the Project:I cut lettering from the spare mount board and painted it with black gesso. The letters were then glued to the front cover.
Stamp honeycomb and open circles onto a separate piece of calico using the same colours used previously. Stitch each one to some separate wadding and cut out these circles.
Stitch or glue your choice of trims and the circles onto the front and add further paint splatters. Fold the excess painted calico onto the reverse side of the wadding and adhere with glue or stitching.
Cut two pieces of mount board cover sized. Cut four pieces of elastic. Sandwich the elastic between board and fabric, going diagonally at each corner and glue the stitched piece to the mount board.

FURTHER IDEAS:
Sew Lovely CardI glued the leftover painted and stamped fabric onto some plain black card and stitched through the layers (as in Step 6). Using the ATC die, I cut three shapes from this fabric covered card and another three from plain black card (alternatively you could cut simple rectangles and finish with a corner punch). I stitched buttons to the fabric shapes, then layered with the black card and glued to the card blank. Splatters of the same paint were used over the whole card. The lettering was cut from mount board covered in black gesso and attached.

Cut two arched windows and two arched aperture frames out of grey board, also cut two arches out of glossy white card to fit.
Stamp the two main images in black StazOn onto glossy card and colour with the Spectrum Aqua pens. Add highlights in white pen.
Colour one of the large stamps quickly with the Spectrum Aqua yellow and stamp several times onto glossy arch.
Repeat with the yellow pen and then rub over quickly with a wet wipe to spread the colour.
Next colour the stamp with red, stamp off onto scrap paper once and then stamp all over background. Do not rub over with a wet wipe this time. Repeat with the blue pen.
Ink up the Lattice stamp in black and press through the Moroccan grid stencil to create a rough pattern.
A s soon as I saw the latest Lynne Perrella stamps I knew I had to create something with them. The designs follow a stained glass theme, which naturally makes you think of arched windows, jewel colours and lots of texture.
I've coloured the stamped images in as if they were made up of separate pieces of glass, but they work equally well coloured and blended more randomly. I've stamped on glossy card to create a glass effect but stamping on acetate and colouring on the back or allowing the background to show through also works very well.
For the background I've used a very simple technique: stamp the main image over and over again in different colours until the whole area is covered. I used Spectrum Aqua pens, which have got a lovely broad nib to colour on my stamps, starting with yellow, then red, then blue. The same colours were used to colour the focal image. By creating a background like this, you know it's going to match the main image in design and colour palette, keeping it all well coordinated. I then added some stencilling with the coordinating Tando Moroccan stencil just to tie everything in.
As for the arches, wow, I had fun. I used a Tando grid, Moroccan design, all pre-cut for you, tissue paper, brads and wire, and I covered the lot with Mod Podge and Stampendous Frantage embossing enamel in Aged Silver. This embossing powder is very textured as it's made up of several different powders of varying colours and consistencies. I don't have the recipe for it, but just looking with the naked eye I could see silver, flecks of gold and finer black powder. When you add heat it melts to different degrees according to how long it's under the heat gun.
To hold all the layers together, I used staples, which worked very well as the arches are quite heavy and need a strong bond. As the staples are silver they just disappear into the background, especially if you add some embossing powder over the top.

Sprinkle quickly with Aged Silver embossing enamel, tap off the excess, return to the jar and heat to emboss.
Lay the stencil over again and draw sketchily round the shape using a fine permanent black pen.
Take the Moroccan chipboard grid and start cutting it into smaller sections to fit around the frame.
Tear strips of tissue paper, crumple and crease it up to add texture to your frame. Stick it all down with Mod Podge or PVA glue.
Do the same on the other frame so they look like this. Remember to leave room for the brads where the arches are going to be hinged together in the centre.
When you are happy with the look, coat the whole frame in glue and emboss it with the Aged Silver enamel.

Stamp the backgrounds in the same way but use two colours only on each arch: red/blue, red/yellow and yellow/blue. Stamp the small faces, colour in using the background colours as the main shades and highlight in white. Add Moroccan chipboard fragments and tissue paper to frames as before and emboss in silver. Staple it all together and then add wire hinges and decoration. Neaten with patterned paper on the back.
To finish the Project:Stick the main images to the background. Staple the frames, glossy card and backboards together. Add brads. Hinge using the silver wire. Add touches of embossing to hide the staples and cover the brads if you want to. Neaten up the backs with patterned paper.

Open up the Letterpress and place the piece of card to be inked on the base piece. Add some of the included foam spacers to the sides of the card piece so it stays in place.
Place the adhesive-backed floral printing plate on the 'lid' of the Letterpress. Use the grid lines on both the base and the lid to make sure that the base card piece will be fully covered by the printing plate when the letterpress is closed.
Add some of the gold letterpress ink to the included ink block. Use the brayer to roll back and forth through the ink until the brayer is evenly coated.
Roll the inked up brayer over the floral printing plate until it is evenly covered with the gold ink.
Close the lid of the Letterpress, and run the whole piece through the Big Shot or other die cutting machine. Remove and leave to dry.
Cut a circle window from the letter-pressed piece using the largest of the circle dies. Cut the second largest circle die from a piece of turquoise card. Add the turquoise piece behind the window in the gold letter-pressed piece.
L etterpress wedding stationery is very popular, but very expensive. You can get the same look at home with this letterpress starter kit, and it’s a lot more friendly on the pocket too! All of the equipment that is needed to get started is included in the box and there are lots more
beautiful printing plates available to add to the system. You can create beautiful letter-pressed stationery easy and quickly in your own home just using the products in the box.
You can create any kind of stationery or cards using this kit, if you are after wedding stationery,it can do everything from the invitations, place settings, and thank you cards to everyday greetings cards and writing sets. When I first came across this product I was so excited that I could quickly create lots of wedding stationery and card sets that I could give as gifts.
Although you can use the Letterpress with normal cardstock you will get better results and a deeper impression using letterpress cotton paper. This paper has a softer and thicker texture and is just prefect for the deep embossing of the letterpress and has a luxurious feel. Letterpress ink is very sticky so make sure your workspace is clear around your ‘ink base block' and brayer. There are some cleaning clothes included in the starter kit but I advise you have some baby wipes on hand for quick clean up if needed. If extra cleaning is needed use some clear stamp cleaner (like the Hero Arts Ultra Clean Clear Stamp Cleaner) and a micro-fibre cloth.

Top Heavy LetterpressTo cover just part of your card with the letterpress design, simply alter the position of the printing plate so that when it is closed the bottom part of the card will not be covered. Ink up the printing plate in the same way as for the Thank You card. Add a strip of turquoise card just above the bottom of the gold letterpress pattern and stamp the sentiment. Create the flower as before and attach to the card.
A Little LetterpressFor this variation move the printing plate so that when the Letterpress is closed the plate will only cover the bottom third of your card. Ink up the floral printing plate as before. Add a strip of turquoise card where the gold letterpress pattern ends and stamp the sentiment above it. Create the flower as before and attach to the card.

Project: Stamped Canvas and Cards
To finish the project...Glue the number squares to the canvas with Matte Multi Medium. Die-cut arrows from Grungeboard using the Artful Arrows die, paint them red and coat with Glossy Accents. Stamp a sentiment with black ink on a die cut label. Also die-cut stars and a heart from cork. Matte a photo on white cardstock, or use a stamped or vintage image instead. Glue everything down on the canvas with Matte Multi Medium.
Cover a canvas board with white gesso using a palette knife. Use the lid of a Distress Paint bottle to make some circle impressions into the gesso. Leave to dry.
Paint the canvas with slightly watered down Tumbled Glass and Broken China Distress Paint. Start with the lighter colour and drop in the darker shade. Leave to dry.
Add tissue tape to the canvas, and stamp rows of stars with Stazon Jet Black ink. Dry brush Black Soot paint around the edges for some punch.
Cut the Specialty Stamping Paper into 6cm x 10cm rectangles and stamp the numbers with bright Archival Inks. I used seven colours of ink, but you can use less too.
Ink an alphabet stamp with embossing ink and press randomly on the numbers, hold the cling stamp in your hand (not on a block) to get just patches of the image. Heat emboss with white embossing powder.
Distress the edges of all the rectangles with an edge distress tool to add great additional texture. Specialty Stamping Paper looks lovely with distressed edges.
I t can be such fun to go really bold and bright with your stamping, get out those big chunky stamps and the brightest coloured inks. Bold stamps can sometimes be a little hard to use, since they easily take over a project and become the focal point. But you can also use them to create a background. Or how about
making them the focal point, let them be bold and really shine?
Bright colours always make a project look happy and cheerful, something that works great for summer stamping. This project uses Ranger’s Archival Inks that come in a wonderful range of colours, they are permanent and waterproof. I stamped on Specialty Stamping Paper, which is a great matte coated paper, but you can use any other smooth papers too. Smooth papers work much better than textured papers with bold stamps as they often have a large solid surface, which you’ll want to stamp clearly and solidly.
For this tutorial, I made a canvas board using bold number stamps by Tim Holtz to create a background. Because the numbers are so bright and bold, not much more is needed to complete the canvas. I used a photo as a focal point, but you can instead use a stamp, a vintage image, die-cut or anything else you can think of. The same techniques would look great on a scrapbook page too, or use the numbers to make a background in your art journal.
I’ve also done some heat embossing on top of the stamped numbers, for extra texture. Since I’ve used Archival Inks and wanted the embossed text to remain white, I stamped with Archival first and then heat embossed with a second stamp. Always be careful when using a heat gun so that you don’t burn yourself.
These bold number stamps are great for birthday cards too, where the number really can be the focal point. This works especially for men's or boy’s cards, when you may have less image stamps that are suitable. My variation projects show how the numbers can steal the show!
“I often reach mainly for my black, brown
and neutral inks when stamping, but the
brightly coloured inks really give punch to a
project and are so fun to use. By going bold and bright you can create
very happy and cheerful projects, perfect for
summer time.”

You Are The Best By Rikka Kovasin
For my first project I created one of my typical cards – a mixed media styled background, layered papers and stickers and the stamped image on top.
First I added some purple acrylic paint to a kraft colored card. I also added a few splashes of mist and pencil doodles. Then I started to layer pieces of patterned papers and random stickers using this month’s color palette. I also added a few pieces of washi tape.
I stamped the lady onto a piece of white cardstock and coloured her using Copic felt pens. For the strong yellow locks of hair I also added touches with a crayon. I then added the image to the card using 3D foam dots. I finished the project with a stamped greeting.

Kiss Kiss By Rikka Kovasin
I kept my second card quite simple just using a few mediums and one layer.
First I stamped the lady onto a white card. Then using the edge of a piece of paper I created the rays around her. I placed the paper on top of the card and used Distress Ink in two colours, ‘Spiced Marmalade’ and ‘Mustard Seed’, inking along the edge of the paper. Thus the other side of the ray is more heavily coloured than the other. I moved the paper after every ray and went over the whole card.
After I finished the background I then coloured the stamped image using Copics including the purple to her hair. To finish the card I added a few stitch lines with a black thin felt pen and stamped the greeting.
Fleur de Lis LadyBy Rikka Kovasin
For my third project with the stamp I created a miniature canvas. For this piece I used just the face of the lady and created the hair using different buttons and charms.
As the first step I painted the tiny 4x4 inch canvas using acrylic paints and mists. On top I then added a dress cut out of a book page. I stamped the face first to a piece of cream cardstock and then cut it out. I covered the face with a layer of Soft Matt Gel to prevent the colour mediums I was planning to use on her hair from soaking into the face.
Using Gel Medium I then glued different bits and bobs and embellishments to form her hair. I used buttons, a coin and also a flower. After the medium had dried I then added a few squeezes of mist. I also added some Micro beads placed a big “fleur de lis” embellishment to her dress. I then finished the piece with some drawings using Stamper’s Big Brush White pen, pencil and black felt pen.
“It was unbelievable to be able to design a stamp for the magazine! I’ve been doing mixed media ladies for a while now andnow I’ve made one of them into a stamp.
Really amazing! I hope you find the stamp inspiring and find use for her! I can’t wait to
see the stamp in use!”

Warm HelloBy Christine Stokes
The hair on this lady’s face reminded me of petals and so I stamped it twice in Versamark, embossing in gold and rotating through 180 degrees to make a flower shape.
I added some pearls, coloured with an alcohol marker, to make the centres. The image was used in its original form, also embossed in gold and cut with a stitched tag. A simple sentiment was added. The ribbon was coloured with the same alcohol marker to match the flower centres.

To make the Bokeh background, I spritzed a piece of card with water and added drops of Aqua Tints in yellow, orange and purple, using a pipette and allowed the colours to mingle. When dry, I stamped circles of white acrylic paint through a stencil to produce the dappled light effect. Some small circles were added merely using the sponge dauber. When totally dry, the face image was stamped with Versamark and gold embossed.
The background mount was coloured with an alcohol pen and then stamped with Stampin’ Up Gorgeous Grunge splats and also embossed in gold. The ribbon was coloured with the same marker. The small tag from Lili of the Valley was attached to the ribbon and kept in position with a dimensional pad.

Gripping either end of the corn, roll the sweetcorn in the paint.
Roll the sweetcorn over your already prepared background, taking care not to slide it!
Baby sweetcorn works too! Roll the corn inthe paint.
Roll the baby sweetcorn over the background. This gives a smaller design.
Once you have finished, you can then decide which bits of your background you like best, then cut out and stamp!
A dding that extra little detail to a background is always something I love to do, trying to find something fun and unique that will give
my backgrounds a different look! I was looking for interesting things to print with, and I suddenly had a ‘lightbulb’ moment! Sweetcorn! It’s already cylindrical (sort of), so it would be easy to roll straight onto the project, and the pieces of corn have a great geometric shape to them. I definitely think paint works best for this technique, you need a nice big area of colour to roll the sweetcorn around in first, before you print with it, which would be tricky with an ink pad. The consistency of paint works well too, ‘sticky’ enough to give good coverage over the sweetcorn, which then means you get a nice opaque print onto your chosen background.
I decided to use a masterboard for this idea, creating a background on an A4 sheet of card. As the sweetcorn printing can be a bit hit and miss, if you use a masterboard you can choose the best bits of your printing to use in the actual project! Have a go, it’s really fun!

Project: Stamping Milk Cartons
Cut the milk carton box net out of white cardstock using the Sizzix die and your die cutting machine.
Sponge some areas with Wild Honey ink, use plenty of ink to create a beautiful bright intense colour.
Sponge the remaining areas with Picked Raspberry ink, let the colours overlap a bit so you create a third colour (in this case orange) where the two inks are applied.
Spray a little bit of water into your hand, and clap your hands above the paper. Dab the water drops off with kitchen paper, wonderful drip spots will appear.
Stamp the entire piece with the key images, use the same two Distress ink colours as used for the sponged background to keep the effect subtle.
Stamp the castle image twice along the bottom and the text image at the top, all using black StazOn ink.
T his Thinlets Die from Sizzix makes the cutest little milk carton, just 5cm square on the base and about 9cm tall, they make great gift boxes for smaller presents or fabulous treat boxes for parties or a wedding.
The Thinlets Dies are chemically etched carbon steel and hence you can get a lot more detail in the die. The thing I really love about this one is that it not only cuts the shape but it also creates the score lines so it is such a doddle to complete the box. If you struggle to get the die cut shape out of the die, add a piece of waxed paper between the die and your card before cutting, this will help the cut die slip out easier.
Paint, stamp and decorate your flat box net straight after cutting, don’t be tempted to fold first as this will give you an uneven surface for stamping. If you’re not to worried about design placement you could also decorate the card first and cut when fully dried.
To add some highlights to my stamped images I’ve painted areas with bleach. I prefer to load a water brush with undiluted bleach for this as it is easy to control and you don’t have to worry about knocking the open dish of bleach over. Always take great care when using bleach and remember to fully wash out your brush when you have finished.
I’ve added a sisal string and a mini peg as my closure at the top of the box, but ribbon or yarn also looks lovely. For a more industrial look you could staple the box closed, or use wire or sandwich bag ties. For a sleek line use a single large brad through the top lip to close the box. Now carefully paint some parts of the images with undiluted bleach. Don’t use too much, as you don’t want to make everything snow white, just some accents. I always work with a bleach-filled water brush. Dry well.
Fold on the score lines and add double-sided tape on the tab as shown. Fold into a tube. Glue or use double-sided tape to fix the bottom of the milk carton and fold down the shaped top.
Holding both sides together, punch holes in the top edge and finish the piece with a string and a mini peg.

M ama, why did you have your artwork in the freezer? asked my daughter as I madethis card. Because she is used to craft activities taking over every room in the house,my response of "Oh, I’m just doing some cracked glass stamping” seemed to make
perfect sense.
The cracked-glass embossing technique is easy, fun, and the process might even catch the attention of your family members! More important, it’s a great way to give an old-world, vintage look to just about any stamp design.
For this technique, you’ll start with a stamped image and add layers of clear embossing powder on top. I experimented with a few and found the most effective to be the Clear Gloss Ultra High embossing powder from WOW. Because it’s ‘ultra high’ you get nice thick application right away.
A few more tips I discovered along the way are to cut or die cut your stamped image before you apply the embossing ink and powder. This ensures that you’re not wasting powder on a large piece of card, only to cut it down later.
Second, I experimented with both matte and glossy card and both work perfectly. For this project I used glossy card as I wanted to create a really soft sepia-toned background with Distress ink. The little hints of colour on the woman’s gloves and hat add a touch of contrast. Be sure to do all of your inking and colouring before you start embossing, and be aware that the colours will be slightly less vivid underneath all the layers of melted powder.
Lastly, pop the piece into your freezer right after you finish the last blast with the heat tool. Wait a few minutes then remove it and bend it gently, repeating the process until you have the look you like. It’s easy and you’ll have mastered a technique that will intrigue all that see it.
Stamp, die-cut and colour the image. I’ve used Tea Dye on glossy card, stamped with Walnut Stain and coloured with Distress pens.
Press the embossing inkpad on the stamped cardstock, covering the entire surface.
Immediately cover with Clear Gloss Ultra High embossing powder. Tap off the excess powder and return it to the jar.
Heat-set the image. Let the piece cool for a moment as it will be too hot to handle. Then apply more embossing ink.
Repeat the process three more times to build up a thick very layer of melted embossing powder.
Place the piece in the freezer for five to ten minutes. Remove and bend gently to achieve a cracked look.

To finish the project... Paint the white matte card with Bora Bora; when dry, sand the edges and surface. Mount on red card. Attach washi tape to white card, trim and glue vertically on the right side. Stamp and emboss “carte postale” with Bark on a Tea Dye coloured piece of glossy card. Stamp and emboss “simply beautiful” with Bark on kraft card. Glue them to the painted background as shown; add a small piece of washi tape below. Mount the cracked glass embellishment on a red circle die cut, using foam tape.Add a gingham bow at the bottom.

Lace PlaqueEmboss your card and stick it to the front of the MDF plaque. Paint with Lake Wanaka paint mixed with a little Space Cadet. Once dry, rub Treasure Gold over the raised areas, also around the edges of the plaque. I always paint the back of items like this too. The paint acts as a seal on the wood and the final finish is nice.
Fray the edges of the hessian and paint with two to three coats of Gesso and dry. To add the design to the hessian stamp it onto tissue paper and colour the tissue paper with pencils. It's better to colour the back of the paper so that the design remains crisp. Tear the excess tissue away from the design. The tissue can then be attached to the hessian by painting a layer of Matt Glaze onto the hessian and laying the tissue carefully onto the glaze. Paint a coat carefully over the tissue to seal it and to spread out any wrinkles. Wash areas of colour around the tissue with colours from the palette.
To complete the plaque add lace to the top and bottom. Glue on the hessian panel using Pinflair glue then finish the design with a metal butterfly.
Butterflies and laceThis stamp is large enough to cut up and use in smaller pieces, using parts of a stamp design can create interesting effects and extend its use. Create the background by embossing a piece of card, painting it with a Lake Wanda and Space Cadet mix, then rub Treasure Gold over the embossed areas as before. Then cut the card into three equal strips to fit across the card base. Cut strips of pale blue lace to fit across the card in between the embossed card.
Stamp the design twice onto card painted with Nougat paint. Cut out the parts of the design you want to use and colour the flowers with pencils. Draw around the edges of the card with the gold leafing pen.
Cut out squares of hessian slightly larger than the card and fringe the edges. Paint the hessian with two to three coats of Gesso and when dry rub some treasure gold onto the fringing. The stamped card squares can then be attached to the hessian and then stuck onto the card base as shown. Add two butterflies and some pearls to finish.

Floral DreamTo create the main part of the card cut a square of white card and paint it with Nougat paint. This creates a wonderful smooth background to stamp onto and a warm background colour. The stamp is used twice in opposite corners to fill the square. I have found that the easiest way to stamp across two corners is to place the uninked stamp face down onto the card where the design should be. Then press the stamping block over it so that the edges of the block line up with the edges of the square. It is then easy to ink the stamp and line up the design into two opposing corners as I have done here.
Colour the roses and leaves with pencils, then use washes of Lake Wanaka, Guacamole and Rose around the design to add colour.
Stamp your chosen word onto another piece of card painted with Nougat and then wash the same colours onto the card as before. Emboss the card and paint it with Lake Wanaka with a little Space cadet mixed in to create the background. Once the paint is dry rub Treasure gold over the raised areas.
Finally, the whole card can be assembled as shown adding lace, ribbons and pearls as needed.
DESIGNER TIP...

absorbent sheet. The gesso soaks through the gaps
between the threads and can stick to the surface
behind it

I 've chosen some of the latest stamps from Prima for these projects: they're collages with quite fine line areas, scribbles, text, and grids that lend themselves well to using watercolour markers and repeat stamping. Stamp them several times in different colours to add to your card.
Rather than stamping in black, I've coloured the stamps with the broad nib of Spectrum Aqua pens. This is an old technique that I'm revisiting, but I'd forgotten what fun it was. The benefits of colouring directly on the stamp are that you can pick out exactly the areas you want for each colour and you can also easily just colour and stamp a part of the collage – it makes it very flexible. I've also picked out the focal points by outlining them with the dark grey pen.
I then wanted to use the pens to stencil with, so I coloured over the stencil and then, placing the stencil over my card, spritzed it with water and then blotted with kitchen towel. At first it looks as if you've removed all the colour, but as soon as you lift up the stencil you can see you've created a lovely watercolour effect. I found the best stencils for this were ones with an overall repeating pattern so that when it gets a bit blurry, the eye already knows what the pattern should be. I've used two main colours on each project with touches of a contrasting colour here and there. As well I've used two shades of grey, the darker for outlining and the lighter for building up the background.
I also got out my clear embossing powder and embossed over whole sections of the image to create a focal point. Emboss it two or three times and you get a lovely glossy finish that goes well with the glossy cardstock. I'd forgotten what fun embossing was – I must get my heat gun out more!
To finish the project...Stamp the main images again, adding a touch of contrasting colour (in this case the orange)and emboss over whole image with clear embossing powder. Cut out and add to panel.Add embellishments and layer onto card. Spritz some seam binding with water, colour with thepens and crumple. Staple roughly to the card.

Place your stencil on some scrap paper. Use the broad end of a Spectrum Aqua Red Violet pen to colour over the stencil.
Place the stencil over one corner of the glossy card, hold down firmly and spritz lightly with water.
Leave it for a few moments to let the colour from the stencil bleed a little onto the glossy card and then blot with paper towel.
Lift off the stencil and you'll have a watercolour stencilled pattern. Repeat in opposite corner and then use the Bud Green pen to stencil the other corners.
Colour the Butterfly Collage stamp using the Violet, Green and Slate pens, outlining the butterflies with the Charcoal pen.
Stamp centrally onto the glossy card and then add extra bits of background stamping in the Slate Grey.

Project: Stamped Clay Jewellery
Soften the white Fimo and roll out as a thick sheet and press the stamp firmly onto the clay. Use a knife or cutters to cut out the shape for the pendant and make a hole at the top using a cocktail stick.
To make the beads, roll small balls of Fimo and flatten slightly. Make holes through the beads with a cocktail stick and thread onto the stick while stamping. Re-shape the bead and remove fromthe stick.
Place the pendants and beads on the ceramic tile and bake in the oven at 110oC for 30 minutes. Leave to cool.
Pour a little Fimo liquid onto some kitchen foil. Place a few drops of alcohol ink onto the Fimo liquid and mix together using a cocktail stick.
Wipe the coloured Fimo liquid onto the baked Fimo using your finger to create the faux glazed effect. Remove any excess liquid with a clean finger or a baby wipe. More than one colour of Fimo liquid can be added to the baked piece.
Bake the glazed pieces again on the ceramic tile at 130oC for 20 minutes. Leave to cool before threading onto leather cord.
L iquid polymer clay is an intriguing material to work with.It has quite a few different applications and it can be used with regular polymer clay (e.g. Fimo) or with other materials. It can
be used as a glue, or for image transfers, or as a paint as it can be coloured with lots of different mediums. It can be baked on its own and can even be combined with fabric.
In this project Fimo Liquid is coloured with alcohol inks and used as a glaze to create a faux ceramic effect. Ceramic pendants and beads can be beautiful but can feel a little out of reach from most crafters as the process of using and firing clay can be time consuming and expensive. This faux ceramic technique is a fantastic, simple, quick method to create a similar effect. The use of stamps in this project results in beautiful intricate details easily added to the finished jewellery.
When creating the pendants and beads it is easier to create quite a few in one go, as the coloured glazes will be mixed and ready to use. Soften the clay and play around with the stamps to make patterns that are pleasing before cutting out different shapes. After the stamped bases are baked and cooled, it's fun to try out different colour combinations, as well as single colour glazes, for different effects.

“I love the look of ceramics and enjoy working in three dimensions
but I have found clay difficult to work with in the past. My projects were
always the ones that exploded in the kiln at school! I love working with Fimo polymer clay due to its bold colours and ease of use. This faux ceramic technique combines the
beautiful look of a ceramic glaze with the handiness of polymer clay.”

Boat On The Waves By Angela SimpsonCut the A5 white card to size (11cm square). Stamp the boat onto a Post-it note and cut out to form a mask. Stamp the boat using Archival ink onto the white card and cover with the mask.
Position and fasten the stencil onto the card so that the boat looks as if it's riding the waves. Using Post-it notes mask out the areas of the stencil you don't want to use. Stencil the sea using stencil brushes and a mix of Coastal Cabana, Marina Mist and Pacific Point ink. To add depth pull the colour from the stencil onto the card using a make-up sponge. Remove the stencil and using the cloud mask add the sky using Marina Mist and a stencil brush.Add the birds using Archival ink.
Remove the boat mask and colour the boat using Marina Mist and Soft Sky marker pens. Using a black Sharpie pen add a fine line around the card edge and then layer onto complementary card before adhering to the card base.
Big FishBy Susan WherryUse the Distress Inks to colour one piece of 14cm white card.Stamp compass and shells with Momento Teal Zeal as shown. Draw two curvy lines (to make the waves) and stamp the ship with Midnight StazOn. Colour waves with the pencils. Stick this piece onto card base.
On the other square of white card draw a further seven waves. Stamp seagulls and rope with Staz-on as shown. Colour waves as before and cut into two sections and use dimensional sticky pads to decoupage onto base.
On a scrap of card stamp ship, gulls, fish and rope with Staz-On ink, cut out and colour with the pencils. Decoupage these, tuck the fish behind one of the waves. Finally, use white gel pen to define the waves.

Happy Birthday, Old SaltBy Joanne AllisonStamping the focal image and sentiment on a die cut oval keeps this card quick to make and lends to the crisp, nautical feel.I wanted a very fine line to accentuate the oval so used a fineline marker to draw round it. Keeping the pen perfectly upright as you go round the shape ensures an even thickness line. A few clear droplets make perfect embellishments for a watery feel – you could use clear Dew Drops or Zoomz if you have them in your stash or do what I’ve done here and squeeze a few beads of Glossy Accents onto the card, just don’t be tempted to poke them too soon to find out if they’re dry!

Moonlight Over the OceanBy Anna-Karin EvaldssonThis colour combination works great for a monochromatic night time scene set at the sea. Stamp the scene with Jet Black Archival Ink on glossy cardstock, starting with the lighthouse. Continue with the boat, rocks, moon and sea. Use a small wave stamp to build the sea around the boat and to extend the sea.
The scene was coloured with dye inks, using a Colorbox Stylus Tool and Ranger’s Craft Nib. Start with the lightest shade of blue and gradually build up darker colours. The darker colours are easier to apply if you already have a lighter shade underneath. Leave some of the paper white for highlights and to give life to the scene. Use a white gel pen to add additional highlights. Dry-brush white pigment ink around the moon for shine, and at the rocks and lighthouse for mist. It is easy to use a Q-tip for this, dabbing it off on scrap paper first. Mount the scene on white cardstock and finally on folded dark blue cardstock.
Make Waves & DreamBy Denise van DeventerWhen thinking about the ocean, I always think of walking along the beach, picking up shells and sitting and watching the waves. The ocean allows me tothink and be quiet. So this was the tie-in to Life onthe Ocean Wave.
I incorporated my ephemera bits, with my cut-out stamped pieces. Firstly I stamped the word stamps and then placed the torn corrugated board in the centre of the card, over this. I then positioned my items along the torn edges of corrugated board and coloured around them, using a paintbrush and pigment ink.The flower was stamped with StazOn and thencoloured again with pigment inks and a paintbrush, and some white acrylic paint.

Sea StoriesBy Claudia NeubacherCut some thin, wave shaped strips from printer paper to use as masks. Spread the first blue acrylic colour on the Gelli Plate using a brayer. Place wave strips as masks over the colour and pull your print. Pull the ghost print and put aside. Remove masks and add another blue colour to your Gelli plate. Put masks back on plate – this time in slightly different places – and print a second, overlapping layer of waves. Repeat the process with two more colours and the masks in different places.
Cut finished and dried print to size and cut off the upper part of the print along one of the waves lines. Stamp your sailing ship in black archival ink on a piece of card and cut out. Cut a wave shaped line into the ‘sea’ to insert and glue in the ship. Use one of your ghost prints as the sky. Distress the edges and glue onto a panel of white card. Add texture to your waves with partially stamped scripts. Add tiny dots using a white Sharpie. Stencil ‘Sea Stories’ with white acrylic paint and sponge. Add stamped and cut out ‘sea’ word panel. Distress the finished panel's edges and glue onto a white greeting card.
All At SeaBy Jennifer MullensWater-coloured brushstrokes make the perfect nautical background especially in these gorgeous blues along with some quick and simple paper piecing to make the boat stand out from the background. The stripes of colour also remind me of painted wood so I thought the bold brushstroke sentiment would be a good choice to layer over them too.

Sail AwayBy Lydia Brooke EvansStamp the boat onto the acetate and also onto white cardstock. Colour the boat on the white card stock using Copic Markers – B00, B02 and B05 for the sails and B24 and B26 for the body. Cut the coloured boat pieces out and attach them to the outline stamped onto the acetate, then cut this out. This means that the ropes will be seen on the acetate piece and give a more realistic look.
For the waves cut these out of blue card stock using the Scalloped dies, but upside-down. This gives these fabulous wave shapes. Add to panels of white card stock onto the card black leaving a strip of empty space. To this strip add the die cut waves and then add the boat between the wave layers.
Carpe DiemBy Kerstin-Inga PetersMix together White and Bird Sand Gesso and spread over a wide area with a palette knife as your background, to represent structure sand, waves and sky then dry with hot air gun. Use colour spray inks (light and dark blue) and water to represent the sea waves. Stamp the main motifs with clear stamps and StazOn black ink, using the silver ink pad for the motif in the background. Cut out a vintage sailor picture and glue onto your card.

A Little Hello By Chrissie StokesStamp the birds onto the card and paint with Rubber Cement to create a mask and dry. Apply the Distress inks in horizontal bands, using sponge daubers. Sponge the sky with Soft Sky ink, dry, then stamp in VersaMark, using the Sky background stamp and emboss with Sparkling Snow powder. Sponge Tumbled Glass ink over the top and then clean the embossing with a baby wipe. Stamp over the sea using Gorgeous Grunge splats with white ink and emboss with Clear Hologram Sparkle powder. Over stamp the stripey Gorgeous Grunge stamp with Salty Ocean Ink.
Remove the rubber cement with an eraser. Cut the front frame with rectangle dies and stamp the sentiment above the smaller rectangle. These dies have the ‘stitching’ on both sides of the cut line and so are perfect for both panels and apertures.

Texture PasteMasterclass:
Get messy and try these fantastic techniques using texture paste! By Trish Latimer

“Texture paste, in one form or another,is definitelyone of my ‘go to’ products. From the basic ‘use
through a stencil’ idea, right through to creating an entire piece of art with the stuff, I just love it!
Messy crafting at its best, right up my street!”

Creating texture in your art work is just one of the techniques you can utilise to create design features, interest and detail. Using texture paste is probably the simplest way to achieve this! The results from applying texture paste to your art are
far too numerous to mention. From a bold, almost artex look with thick chunky texture, to the complete opposite, delicate and detailed texture than can be achieved by applying the paste through a stencil.
Texture paste is essentially a gloopy, plaster like substance, so whatever patterns and shapes you create with the paste will be rock solid once dry. The dry paste can then be painted, inked or sprayed to suit your project.
Texture paste is designed to be used straight from the pot, but of course crafters are renowned for their experimental genius, so why not try colouring the paste, or adding your own inclusions such as glitter or microbeads to see the effects?
The sheer variety of pastes out there on the market is vast; coloured paste, glittered paste, paste with fibres, beads and sand included, the list goes on! My advice would be to get a couple of basic pastes from differing brands to see which you get on with best. Some people like runny, gloopy paste to work with, some like thick paste they can use almost like plastering a wall! I have preferences depending upon what I’m doing with the paste. For small embellishments, I love PaperArtsy’s Grunge Paste, for stamping into I prefer the ‘mousse’ like consistency of the Faber Castell Whipped Spackle. It's all a matter of playing and experimenting, something all crafters just love to do!
DESIGNER TIP...
It is best to use a thin layer of texture paste if
you wish to stamp into it, too much paste seems to ‘clog up’ the stamp and
detail is lost.
p70-75_REVISED_MASTERCLASS_CSJUNE15.indd 71 7/4/15 10:07:24

Technique 1: Texture Paste with Moulds Small embellishments can be created by adding texture paste plus paint to a mould.
Add texture paste (I have used PaperArtsy Grunge paste) and acrylic paint to a small dish. Use around twice as much paste as paint.
Fill a small mould with the paste/paint mixture and leave to dry.I left this heart on a radiator for 3 days to ensure it dried out completely. Remove and use on your art!
1
3
Mix the paste and paint together. The paint helps to stop the paste from crumbling when it has dried out, as well as colouring the embellishment.
2
Texture PasteMasterclass:
DESIGNER TIP...
If you have used acrylic paint (or any other permanent colour) as your
background for stencilling, any mistakes can be simply wiped away! Baby wipes will remove
any unwanted stencilling, then you can simply dry off
the project and have another go!

Technique 2: Stamping into Texture PasteDetailed design can be added to texture paste by pressing stamps into it!
Technique 3: Cling Film TextureBig, bold texture can be achieved by using household items such as cling film.
Spread a thin layer of texture paste onto your substrate.
Press the stamp firmly into the paste, then remove and wash immediately before the texture paste dries on it!
1
Wet your stamp so it doesn’t stick too much to the paste. A light spray with water will work, or a rub with a wet baby wipe, as I have done.
2
3
Spread a thick layer of Texture paste onto your substrate. A thick layer means we can really press down into it and get some deep grooves.
Paint or colour your finished piece of texture.
1
3
Scrunch up some cling film, then unfold and press into the wet texture paste. Leave to dry. My piece took four days on a radiator before the paste was solid enough for me to remove the cling film. Be patient!
2
p70-75_REVISED_MASTERCLASS_CSJUNE15.indd 73 7/4/15 10:08:44
74 www.craftstamper.com
Technique 4: Stencilling With Texture PasteThe prefect way of adding crisp, textural detail is by applying texture paste through a stencil.
I am applying coloured paste over a finished background, so my first step is to create the background! If you wanted to colour both the background and stencilling at the same time, then jump straight to step 2!
Scrape the paste through the stencil, then lift up carefully and set aside to dry.
1
Position the stencil over the background, and tape it down to prevent messy ‘paste going under the stencil’ accidents!
2
3
Technique 5: Using Texture ToolsBig, bold texture can be achieved by using household items such as cling film.
Apply a layer of texture paste to your substrate. Wet, gloopy texture paste will not hold detail as well as the lighter, more air filled brands, so experiment.
Once dry, if you find the substrate shows through where you have scraped deep into the paste, simply cover with Gesso to even everything out before you colour the finished piece.
1
3
Use your chosen implement to make marks in the wet paste. I have used a Ranger Texture Tool, you could use anything at all!

All Loved UpSmear paint on a cardboard square to create the background. Use red paint through a stencil to create a dotty effect, then overstamp using white paint. Apply black embossing paste through parts of the “This Is Love” stencil, and leave to dry. Glue on the Grunge Paste heart to finish.
Cover a piece of cardboard with text paper, then give it a wash of gesso. Create texture by stamping into texture paste on three areas, and using different texture tools to scrape designs into paste on the edges. Once dry, cover the whole piece with paint, blending the colours here and there to give a colourful background. Once the paint is dry, add small areas of stamped detail. As the surface is not flat, add these details by gluing stamped tissue to
the background, rather than trying to stamp on top of the texture. Once the glued tissue has dried, stencil part of the ‘Dandelion Pods’ design onto the background using black embossing paste. Once this has dried, add in the ‘wish’ word, again using stamped tissue. Add extra detail to the pods using punched out circles, tiny paste hearts and some printed dots.

“To achieve the retro look for my blocks of inked colour I wanted them to have rounded corners. This is tricky to do without using the negative space of a die cut, I was also able to make the rectangles longer than the die allowed to by extending the negative space.”
MaterialsSTAMPS: Lawn Fawn – Stay Tuned, Clark’s ABC’s; Paper Smooches – Happy Birthday; Every Elle – Merry & Bright. INKS: Distress Inks – Broken China, Stormy Sky, Wild Honey, Spiced Marmalade, Rusty Hinge; Versafine – Onyx Black. OTHER: White Gel Pen; Woodware – Mask it.
Using the middle sized die from the set cut a mask from the Mask it paper. To increase the length of the rectangle you will need to move the die along, making sure you keep the edges aligned, and pass it through your machine again.
Adhere the mask to the front of your folded card blank, making sure it is level, centred and positioned at the top of the card.
Cover all of the card blank with scrap paper or Post-it notes so you don’t accidentally transfer ink to other areas of your card. Start to apply blue ink using a round ink applicator tool or sponge.
Remove the mask carefully and place it onto your craft sheet or a scrap of paper. Wipe off the excess ink with a paper towel; this will stop the transfer of blue ink to your next colour block.
Re-apply the same mask, ensuring it’s aligned with the first, but lower on the card and apply orange ink as in step 3. Allow both colour blocks to dry.
Stamp the TV and radio in black. Arrange your letters and stamp out the sentiments and diamond accents too. Add highlights with a white pencil or white gel pen.

Useful information... When inking with masks you have to be extra careful you don’t transfer unwanted ink smudges onto the white areas of your card. Wipe off the excess ink on the mask and always keep your hands clean to avoid stray marks.

Regular: All in the Details
There is so much more to see when you take a closer look, here are some of the finer details you may have missed this issue…
All in the Details
Stamped Stitches on p.16Did you spot how beautifully Jenny Marples' designer look buttons matched the stamped fabric? She has added those pretty paint splatters to the buttons too, so that they tie in perfectly. Be sure to splatter a few extra buttons to add to your stash.
Summer Skies on p.10Those super fine dies cuts from Sheena Douglass really will save so much time cutting out your stamped images. Just imagin how long it would take to cut these fine stems. I just love how Kay Carley has created a watercolour look on her beautiful sky backgrounds and carried it through to her stamped and die cut flowers.
Bold and Bright on p.30Anna-Karin uses a great and speedy technique to get just patches of her text stamp to print (shown here in white embossing). Rather than mounting the flexible cling stamp on a block, she has held it in her hand and rolled sections of the inked image onto her card. You can achieve something similar by just colouring part of the image, but this method is fast and more varied.
Stunning Stained Glass on p.20The tiny flecks of gold mixed in with the Frantage Embossing Enamel really show up in this detail image. It’s amazing how the simple chipboard card shapes and tissue paper now look like centuries old, crumbling metal screening. We love how Helen has cut the chipboard to look as if it has broken away.
Distress to Impress on p.6We just love how Anna-Karin has painted her cogs to match her artwork and sanded them back to look distressed. The green colour she has chosen really looks like verdigris, but any shade would work well and allow all your design elements to sit together and match perfectly.
On Watercolour Wings on p.53The collage style stamps make it really quick and easy to create beautiful artwork. Here you can see how Helen has inked the various areas of the stamp with different coloured pens for a multi-shaded look. She has then cut out the butterfly image, embossed it and mounted it on foam pads for extra dimension.

It is with a heavy heart that I have to tell you that there will be NO Artstamps Exhibitions this year.
Those of you who attended Artstamps England last year will remember my saying that I had been badly let down by new managers who had promised the earth; and then failed to deliver. You will also recall that, despite my best efforts to recover the situation in the last 6 weeks prior to the show, it was not a patch on previous shows; and for that I can only apologise.
Whether due to last year or to the fact that the internet and television is changing the face of the craft industry,I do not know, but exhibitors have not seen fit to commit to the shows this year. Without the exhibitors there is no show! As a consequence it is just not economically viable to run the shows; so they will not happen.
As a very significant birthday is now upon me, it seems sensible to take this opportunity to retire gracefully rather than struggle to re-build what had become a very successful series of rubber stamp shows.
May I say a heartfelt thank you to all the exhibitors who have supported me over the last 18 years and an equally grateful thank you to all of you visitors who have attended Artstamps Exhibitions in England, Scotland, Wales and Cornwall. So many of you I know by sight or by name and even more who have become good friends of the shows. I shall miss you all.
Goodbye from Artstamps Exhibitions.

“If there is one thing that I like aboutcolouring then it’s using ink and pencils.
The best combination is in Inktense pencils. The pigment is so rich and you don’t need to add too much water to pick up the colour.”
Create beautiful fine feathery looks using pigment rich Inktense colouring pencils. By R. Maria Sabina

Project: Colouring feathers
Materials Stamps R. Maria Sabina used... • Free stamp Craft Stamper January 2014
Other materials... • Water brush
• Archival ink: Pale Ochre
Stamp the feather stamp using a very light coloured ink. To create the fine lines, pick the colour by touching the brush tip with the Inktense pencil. Practice a few strokes on some scrap paper.
To get a fine line simply touch the paper and drag the colour without putting a lot of pressure onto the tip of the brush. The more pressure you put, the thicker lines you get. Draw strokes around the feather edges.
For a more powerful look, add strokes of a darker colour between the lines. Use dark grey or an even darker shade from the same colour family.
Adding a shadow around the stamped images add another dimension. Use a soft grey with plenty of water. Adding splashes of colour flicked from the end of the brush is also a great way finish off the creation.
A dding dimension to feathers can be challenging. One great way to do this is by adding obvious brush strokes. You can mix the thickness and the colour combination to get the perfect natural look.
You can either use markers with a fine tip or Inktense pencils. They work perfectly by keeping the natural colour between layers of ink which will give a great dimension.
You have to keep in mind that even though Inktense pencils look like watercolour pencils, they are much more intense. Be decisive once you put them onto paper you are stuck with it. This is because no matter how much you try to blend the colour or wash it off with water, it will only stain the paper even more.
You don’t need more tones of the same colour family. You can easily add darker shades by adding the first layer of colour, let it dry and then add a second or third layer.
I always pick up the colour from the pencil tip, using a wet paintbrush. If you place the pencil straight onto paper you might end up with harsh lines and the water won’t blend the colour 100%. Also, Inktense pencils are based on ink. Once it is on paper you have to work with it as fast as possible, otherwise it will dry and you won’t be able to move the colour around.
