I just adore this project by Tracy, such a
fabulous way of using a shadow box!
Welcome to our February issue!I hope you have all started having a play with any creative stash you received at Christmas? My plan this year is to make sure I actually USE the items that make their way into my craft studio… it can get embarrassing when I open a drawer and find a whole heap of stamps that I absolutely love, but have never ever seen an ink pad! Use what you have, that’s going to be my motto for 2016!
What do we have to inspire you this month? Lots! Please join me in welcoming the super talented Michelle Webb to the CS team, she has created a fabulous layout using Gelatos (page 16). So many fabulous tips, this has inspired me to get out my (unused, told you I was bad!) Gelatos and have a go!
Keren Baker has outdone herself with her amazing book bag project on page 6. I’m still struggling to fathom that that super cool bag started life as a book! Amazing work!
We also welcome back Lin Brown, our cover star in this issue. I’m sure you will agree that her journal cover is truly amazing, there's so much detail! Have a closer look on page 45.
We also have canvases, fabric makes, pigment powder ideas and an amazing masterclass on Micro Glaze in this issue, so lots of variety for everyone! Have a wonderfully crafty month!

Book to BookbagCreate a statement bag using this simple but effective upcycled book tutorial! By Keren Baker

Book to Bookbag Keren Baker_CSFEB16.indd 6 1/12/15 12:48:25
I decided to put an old, battered book to good use and create something brand new. The hinged opening motion of books gave me the idea of creating a cute little box handbag.
In order to add artistic elements to my project, I decided to use a durable canvas material that I could easily decorate and would hold its shape well. My upcycle is minimal in design, as I chose to decorate the canvas using an elegant tree slice stamp that allows me to introduce several accents of different colours.

1 Remove the pages carefully from the spine using a craft knife, leaving just the cover remaining.
2 Create a side panel template using the spine width measurement and the height of the book cover. Double the width and add a seam allowance of 1cm to edges. Cut two from canvas.
3 Measure canvas the same size as the book and add 1cm to each edge. Fold over edges and secure with glue.
To finish the project: Decorate the bag. I’ve stamped and coloured using paints and some Velcro pieces to secure the strap.
Step–by–step... Creating a Bag
4 Add the side pieces by folding top, side and bottom edges and attaching with glue to the sides of the book.
5 When the side pieces are attached, the completed side will look like this.
6 Fold over fabric pieces for handles and a strap. Adhere to the sides of the bag. Attach a piece of fabric inside with strong double sided adhesive sheets.

Bonny BookmarksCreate delightfully detailed bookmarks for your loved ones. By Jean Hardy
I decided to use one of Crafty Individuals’ most recently released stamps, a beautiful extra large floral design. It looks really lovely here when embossed in white and coloured with pens. You will need to stamp it twice
on the bookmarks, but it repeats nicely.
As my main focal images I have used other detailed Crafty Individuals stamps and again embossed in the white, but this time on vellum, and the effect is very delicate and pretty, particularly when the vellum is fussy cut and mounted again on coloured card. Mounting the vellum on a coloured background helps the detail to really stand out. A little coordinating coloured embossing in the centre of the vellum detail and appropriate wording just finishes the bookmark off nicely when assembled.

In the Details...
The Stampendous powder picks up all the detail found in the stamped image and looks lovely against the vellum.
Using a pretty button embellishment is a nice finishing touch.
The fine white detailed embossing stands out nicely
against the slightly textured and coloured card of the bookmark.

Gorgeous Gelatos Layer up Gelatos stamping to create beautifully subtle effects and stunning artwork. By Michelle Webb

Technique 1:
Step-by-step… Stamped Gelatos Scrapbook Page
Faber Castell Gelatos are very versatile, their creamy texture can be rubbed onto your mixed media projects for a hit of intense colour or spritzed with water to give you a beautiful watercolour effect. You can
create perfect backgrounds by blending colour with your fingers or removing colour with a baby wipe and a stencil. In this technique I’ll be stamping with Gelatos.
To achieve the best results, use stamps with larger, more open designs rather than stamps with fine details. Rub the Gelatos stick lightly onto the stamp and mist with water, creating a pool of colour on the stamp. Mixing different colours works really well too. I also like to find other things to stamp with like bubble wrap, because they give an alternative, organic stamp effect.

To finish the project: After creating a background, I added modeling paste through a stencil and coloured with Gelatos and a spritz of water. I layered up ephemera, mounted my photo and added embossed splatters at the edges of the image.
For the mounting page, I used book pages and with a layer of blended Gelatos with a spotty pattern achieved by using a stencil and baby wipe. I then added rub-on text and flowers to finish.

Technique 3:Follow the same steps as shown in technique 1, but use bubble wrap as a stamp instead.
Further Ideas Creative Friends Matchbook You could stamp Gelatos onto white cartridge paper and use it to make other things like card backgrounds or little matchbooks for your friends.
I’ve made a matchbook with pages that show the lovely subtle watercolour background. I’ve added bright Distress inks around the edges of the card for a hit of colour and DecoArt crackle paint, mixed with neon paint, Tim Holtz chit-chat words and rub-ons to make a little quote book. To finish, I used a cute little charm with a brad to close the matchbook.

Colour Your World with Nuances Hermine Koster_CSFEB16.indd 20 1/12/15 12:25:37
In the Details...
Instead of sprinkling the Nuances on first and then adding water, as the instructions suggested, I used water first. This made it easier to control the colour and prevent creating brown areas. Leave white space on your card to enhance the colourful part even more.
This notepad was created with leftover colour. The colour was splattered and sprayed onto the pad and a three dimensional stamped butterfly was painted and added as an embellishment.
Spray your homemade spray onto a craftsheet and sponge colour directly onto your stamp. When stamping your image onto cardstock, it creates bright and bold colour. It acts like regular stamping ink but with a slightly watercolour effect.
I added Nunances to water in a mini mister to make my own spray ink. It gives you instant colour and works great with stencils. Using different kinds of paper, like regular cardstock combined with old book paper, gives it an extra dimension.

“Distressed paper edges, layers, textures, beautiful embellishments and a soft colour palette were my source of inspiration to create a trio of vintage shabby chic Valentine’s Day cards.”
Card Art
23www.craftstamper.com
Regular: Card Art
Card Art_CSFEB16.indd 23 2/12/15 12:18:20
I wanted to create multi-layered vintage shabby chic Valentine’s Day cards using a mixture of media. I started each card with a pretty piece of patterned paper. I then started the layering process with
an application of clear gesso to the entire piece of paper, creating a transparent barrier. Once dry, I applied texture paste through a stencil to add a surface pattern design to the background as well as a subtle texture. I then randomly applied white gesso to the background and left to dry.
To add more interest and colour to the background, I applied colour spray and misted with water, causing the colour spray to dilute and create a beautiful, inky background. I gently dried with a heat gun, being careful not to overheat, which could cause the texture paste and gesso to bubble. Although, bubbling the paste and paint can add another unique textured finish.
This technique could be applied to a vast number of paper crafting projects such as tags, scrapbook pages, art journal pages as well as a canvas.

Box of Love By Jennie BoxallI made an Artist Trading Block using Eileen Hull’s Block/Cube Sizzix dies on heavy chipboard. I painted it with gold paint, paint the inside first and glue the box together to paint the outside. Leave one side unglued, so it opens. I painted the card side squares with London Bus red and gold embossed the stamp on each one.
Add an edging of gold embossing to help blend the red card into the box. I used a Ranger Emboss-it Dabber. I also lightly stamped over it all with Calligraphic Mat #4 from The Artistic Stamper in red Archival ink. After gluing all the sides on, add gold painted self adhesive pearls to the corners of the card sides and add red painted beads as feet. I added a few UTEE hearts inside.
“My husband will be getting this as his Valentine’s present!”

Inspired by this romantic time of year, Jennie Boxall from The Artistic Stamper has designed this beautifully graphic sentiment stamp. Complete with three different style hearts, this stamp is just perfect for your secret
love messages and gift projects. Our talented designers show you how.
We always love to see how you have used your free stamp so please share your goodies with us via our Facebook page – www.facebook.com/craftstamper
Lovely ValentinesThis month we have a sweet ‘love’ sentiment stamp designed by The Artistic Stamper designer, Jennie Boxall to include in all your special Valentines this February.
Our Angel Policy: You are free to use these stamps in any handmade projects, including those for commercial sale, provided images are hand-stamped. Jennie Boxall/The Artistic Stamper owns copyright over the original artwork so you may not use the artwork to manufacture stamps or other products for personal or commercial use.
Winged LoveBy Jennie BoxallThis was the simplest of my projects, and all I used was a papier mache heart, a wooden spool, and a set of papier mache wings. I painted them in gold and Quinacridone Red and stamped Calligraphic Mat #4 in the same colours onto the wings and heart. I stamped and gold embossed the ‘love’ stamp onto a piece of red painted card, and cut it out. To finish, I adhered the ‘love’ sentiment and a little painted ceramic crown topped it all off!

Tip…If you have trouble
balancing and gluing your heart on the
spool, gently drill out a bigger hole with a dremel to allow it to
sit better.

Love Your Art CanvasBy Jenny MarplesUsing the base from an old ring bound paper pad as a canvas, I attached a small paintbrush as the main feature of the piece. Using string through the back of the base card, I tied the brush in place. A coat of gesso over the brush and canvas then acted as a primer.
Faux drips were stencilled underneath the brush with texture paste. I added Postbox Red paint to the area above the brush and Pink Iced Gem paint below, dragging my brush between the two to blend the colours. Coordinating acrylic paints were mixed with water to allow them to run down the canvas. To finish, I stamped under the brush using the free stamp and St Valentine StazOn ink.
Love That AlbumBy Jenny MarplesThis album started with basic card covers which were covered with gesso to prime them. After applying a coat of Townhouse Teal paint, I dry brushed and splattered them with coordinating acrylic paints. Having die cut basic paper pages for the inside, the album was bound with sticky back canvas and trimmed with an offcut of sheer ribbon. The free stamp was used with St Valentine StazOn ink to apply the sentiment to calico. This was cut to size and layered over a combination of sheer fabric, book pages, gauze and tissue, sewn together and hand-stitched around the large central heart. An extra mini heart was added to the bottom to balance the design.
Designer Tip…When layering up
different colours of acrylic paint, make
sure you dry each layer completely before applying the next to keep each one
distinct and prevent the colours blending
together.
“This free stamp has been cleverly designed to allow you
to use the word and mini hearts separately on your projects.”

We asked our Design Team some questions about their practice. We’ll be sharing their answers over the next few issues.
This month’s question: Do you have a favourite style of music or artist you listen to whilst creating?
“My guilty pleasure is 80’s dance music…turned up loud!!” – Jaine Drake
“I’m a metal head, so I mostly listen to heavy metal while creating. Turisas, a Finnish folk metal band, is one of my loves.” – Riikka Kovasin
“No music for me, craft time is my quiet time. Although I do talk to myself, just when I need some expert advice.” – Lydia Brooke Evans
“I’m a bit of a music magpie, so it can be anything from Debussy to whatever is in the current charts. Music can calm you down or cheer you up!” – Jenny Marples
We connect with the crafting community and find out more about online tutorials.
A very talented reader, Louise at Louloupurple, shared a fabulous YouTube tutorial on our Facebook page. She has used the free stamps from our October and November issues to create this wonderful journal spread. We just love the colour and all that detail! The tutorial is a brilliant way to inspire fellow art journalers. Thanks Louise!

Like many crafters, I am always looking for inexpensive materials for my art. Sometimes I am a bit ashamed to ask people if I can take their trash, but it gives me pleasure when I can transform that trash
to something beautiful.
Here I will show you how I transformed the backs of ordinary picture frames into Valentine’s Day ornaments.
If you hang the frame on the wall, the wooden stand of the frame is not in use, so it is perfect for use in assemblage artwork. The shape of the backs gave me the idea of creating little houses. However, there are so many other ways they can be used. For example, as tags for gifts or garden plant identification markers… it’s up to you and your imagination!

1 Remove stand from back of frame. If needed, correct shape with scalpel or saw and sand surface with sandpaper.
2 Rub candle wax over all sides. That will prevent paint sticking to the surface and after sanding you will get a nice distressed look.
3 Paint with acrylic paint and leave to dry. Don’t dry with a heat tool, this will melt the wax.
Step–by–step... Altered Picture Frame Stands
To finish the project:Add embellishments. I made a heart made from cardboard, embossing powder, Utee and a Tim Holtz stamp, a vial filled with heart beads and a monocle turned into a frame with a photo and twine. I also added words from Small Talk Sticker book.

Add paste to the centre and use cling film to create texture. Apply clear gesso and paint with Magenta. Add PVA glue to the outside and add cream paint on top of the wet glue. Using glazing medium with Magenta, paint over crackled areas and wipe off. Repeat with Crimson paint.
Drill a hole through top of the shrine. Paint wood hearts and on the central heart, stamp the Flourish stamp into embossing powders. Add gold leaf to all hearts. Stick wire to backs of hearts. Cover sides with layers of micro beads, glitter and dashes of paint. The five small heart wires push through the hole and loop through a loop on the large heart. Add rub on words.

Love You MoreBy Jaine DrakeI made the decision to paint my shrine completely with black gesso and go for a black chalkboard style finish. Black gesso may be scary stuff, but if you’re brave enough to take it on, the results are amazing.
With my base painted, I used a Posca pen in white to create chalkboard style doodling which is really popular right now. I stamped Romek and Agatha on watercolour card to make them more robust and arranged them on the shrine which by now was glued together. To finish the project I gave my shrine feet by attaching black wooden dominos to the base.
Six amazing designers were asked to create one-off art pieces using the house shaped mini shrine by That Craft Place Ltd. Made from versatile 4mm MDF,
these cute little house shrines provide the perfect base for a mixed media project and can be styled in a variety of different ways. Each section can be individually decorated and then slotted together to create a refined project every time.
The House Mini Shrine is available to buy from That Craft Place Ltd for only £2.99. Visit www.thatcraftplace.co.uk for more details.

The Princess and the PeaBy Tracy EassonThe joy of being given a miniature house to work with sparked my imagination into the whimsical land of fairytales, where anything is possible! With the use of clay, stamps, paints and a few bits and bobs, the princess and the pea was born.
The bed legs were made from twigs found in the garden, patterned mattresses were made from clay adorned with the impressions of stamps and lace peeks out from the layers. There’s a tiny ladder to climb and scrunched up book papers create curtains. The all important pea was created from air dry clay, painted and popped under the second mattress to finish.
On a Winter’s DayBy Claudia NeubacherTo create my wintery shrine, I primed the kit with white gesso. Once dry, I stamped barbed wire, birds on wire, roots and branches (using sections of the tree stamp) onto the front and side pieces.
I used washi tape to stabilize and cover the frame. The background panel’s outer edge was covered with masking tape for protection. For a fog-like effect I stamped a tree and then painted a thin layer of white gesso over it before I stamped the next tree layer. I collaged tiny book page bunting at the back of the shrine. The crow was stamped on white cardboard, cut out and then mounted to the background with stacked sticky foam pads. Part of a die cut tree was glued to the back of the front panel before final assembly. Splatters of orange and yellow were added to finish.

BFF Style ShrineBy That Craft Place Designer Sandie GoughGraphic 45 paper is the perfect covering for an MDF mini shrine; I have used the papers both whole and fussy cut to add feature details. To add dimension, some areas have been raised using layers of card; I prefer this method as it provides more stability than 3D gel or foam pads. Inside the shrine I have applied mirror card to the sides to reflect the images and light.
Additional MDF pieces were inked, sealed with matt medium and then crackled glazed and finished with gilding wax before being added to the shrine. To finish, I made individual mini books, and added journal cards to the tiny glass bottles.
Dearly BelovedBy That Craft Place Designer Angela RadfordApply Grunge Paste through Crackle Stencil and seal the shrine with gesso. Blend paint on to the shrine and coat with Orchid Pink. Paint inside Black EcoGreen. Prepare the wings, paint Orchid Pink, and add Fresco Finish Crackle Glaze. When dry, paint with China Pink and watch the cracks appear! Seal with Cosmic Shimmer Clear Matt Finish Glaze and colour angel with Saffron and Orchid Pink and harp with Southern Skies. Highlight with Olive Bronze Treasure Gold. Paint MDF embellishments with gesso then with EcoGreen Gold Acrylic paint. Stamp with PaperArtsy Mini 76.

Project: Whimsical Faces Part Two
Face up to Your Fears Tracy Scott_CSFEB16.indd 41 1/12/15 11:45:29
1 A quick recap:Once you have the shape of your face, you need to divide it into four by drawing a horizontal line halfway down the face and a vertical line halfway across the face. Our eyes are approximately one eye width apart, so next draw a rough oval eye shape across the centre points and two identical ovals either side.
2 Draw in a refined line over the top of the oval, and bring it down to a point in the corner, nearest the centre of the face; this will create the tear duct area. For the bottom of the eye, follow your sketched oval and bring the line down to meet the upper eye line at the tear duct point. Draw a second line up over the top of your eye shape to denote the eyelid. In the corner of each eye, draw a small line across the oval to indicate the muscle that holds the eyeball in place. For the iris and pupil, draw a cut off circle. If you draw a whole circle your eyes will look shocked, try to imagine the circle disappearing into the eyelid.
Step-by-step… Faces Tutorial Part Two: It’s All in the Eyes1

3 Now we are going to create a cohesive base colour for the face and around the eye area including the eyelids. I have chosen Titan Buff for this, as I have decided on tones of brown for my shading. If you have chosen a different colour scheme then you would start with your lightest colour for your base.
4 Now we can start shading, starting with the Yellow Oxide (the medium shade) I painted a small amount of colour above and below the eye using a small, flat, stiff bristle brush (a stiffer bristle brush makes it easier to blend the colours together). Make sure to keep the brush as dry as possible, don’t worry about making it neat and tidy! Next, I painted a layer of white under the eye indicating where light would hit the face, above the cheekbones and a layer of white above the eye to denote where the light hits under the brow bone.
42 www.craftstamper.com
Face up to Your Fears Tracy Scott_CSFEB16.indd 42 2/12/15 16:40:09
5 Next, add darker shading to the eye area and start to build up more depth of colour, for this I started by using Raw Umber (the dark shade). I added a small amount to the inside corner of my eyelid and a thin line across the top of the eyelid to denote a crease. A thin line across the top edge of the eye was also added, this will indicate where the eyelashes will be. I added more Yellow Oxide (the medium shade) and white and started to indicate where the side of the nose would be.
6 I decided on green eyes, so I chose Green Gold. I painted the iris, then brushed a small amount of green across the eyelid and onto the brow bone. I added a small amount under the eye. This shading technique helps to bring out the colour of the eye. For the cheek colour, I mixed the Quinacridone Magenta and White to make a paler pink and added it to the cheeks and to where the brow bone would be (don’t worry if it looks too dark, you can go over it with more white to tone it down).
5 6
7 8
7 Once you are happy with the colour of the painted layer, start to add in the details with coloured pencils. The colours I have chosen are Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber and Black (keeping the same colour family as my original paint colours). Using the coloured pencils will help to define all the details and add more depth to the shading.
8 Using the Black pencil, I coloured the pupil, defined the iris and added a dark line to the top edge of the eye to indicate the eyelashes. Use Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna and Raw Umber to create more shadow on the eyelid and inside corner of the eye (the inside corner and crease of the eyelid is where it should appear darkest and shading should get lighter towards the centre and outer edge of the eyelid).

Top Tips:
1 Work on both eyes at the same time, it is much easier to make them match up if you do each step simultaneously to each eye rather than trying to complete one and then trying to match up the other.
2 Play around with shapes, sizing and spacing of your eyes, try different colour options or try adding individual lashes, some things will work and some won’t but you won’t know until you experiment and you could discover your own stylised look.
9 10
9 To add shading to the iris I used another coloured pencil (choose one that is a slightly darker tone than your eye colour). I chose Olive Green for this step. The top of the iris directly under the eyelid is slightly darker, as the eyelid casts a shadow onto the eyeball, so I have added darker shading to the top half of my iris using the Olive Green pencil. I also added pencil lines to my iris to create further detail (draw these lines from the outside in and don’t hit the centre for a more natural look).
10 For the finishing touches I enhance the colour of my pupil with the black pen. I define the outside of the iris and the thicken the top edge of the eyelid, to indicate the presence of eyelashes. I use a white gel pen to add some highlights to the pupil and iris, creating a sparkle effect. White is also added above and below the eye and around the inner corner to create highlights.

I love how the delicate texture of Bead Gel on the pediment is accentuated beautifully with tiny touches of Copper and
Classic Treasure Gold.
“This project was originally destined to be a wall
hanging with the intention of using up some of my
stash of fabric gelli plate prints. I collaged the piece together on a background of tissue paper adhered to
calico. During the process of decorating this base layer
with stamps, stencils, paints and glazes, I realised that it would actually make a brilliant journal cover.”
Meet the designer: Lin Brown“I have worked in the craft industry for over 20 years and following my retirement from owning my own craft store, I completed a couple of City & Guilds courses in Textiles. This new found love of fabric coupled with my passion for working with paint, has influenced most of my latest projects. The orange tones of my gelli plate printed fabric made a great surface for the door image which I stamped and coloured on Transfer Artist Paper. Ironing this onto the fabric produces a sharper image than stamping directly on the fabric.
Grunge Paste through an alphabet stencil added some great texture to this project. Adding gold paint gave the piece a lift.
Stamping the keyhole on tissue paper and gluing in place with matte medium is a great way to achieve perfect placement.

I love opportunities to include found items. It’s fun to turn unloved and forgotten items into something new. It gives it a new life and tells a story from another time. The best materials for these projects are household
bits and bobs which you don’t use but just can’t throw away either.
In this piece the special touch isn’t the plate itself but how I’ve adorned it. When my husband and I were getting married we searched for the perfect wedding song. Finnish custom is to have a waltz, but as neither he nor I are the dancing type, we wanted to have something else. He came up with the perfect song, originally created by John Lennon but the version we had was sung by Damian Wilson. The chorus line of the song is, “grow old along with me”. Crow Old Along with Me is a homage to our special day, this piece will always be a special one for me.

Project: Hinged Canvas Book
The True Book of Love Louise Crosbie_CSFEB16.indd 51 1/12/15 12:41:27
Discover an alternative use for box frames – hinge them and create an art book! By Louise Crosbie
I used the lyrics, “I never promised you a rose garden”, as my inspiration. The project takes the form of two books in one. The fairytale version ‘The Book of True Love’ and ‘The True Book of Love’.
‘The Book of True Love’ was covered in crackle paint, stencilled with crackle texture paste and then given a soft white and pink wash of colour. I then added DecoArt Interference paints to create a lovely Mother of Pearl effect that shines in the light. I also aged it with antiquing cream around the edges. The Calico Craft Parts were coloured using acrylics and metallic lustres before being glued into place. The inside follows the same soft and romantic theme, with layers of cheesecloth and embellishments.
The True Book of Love’ has a more mysterious styling, with metaphors for real life love. I used a snakeskin stencil in Interference paint on top of a dark base to create a shimmering, scaly finish. Just like real life love, this book can look interesting and dark at times but become a rainbow when the light hits it. The inside is covered in thick crackle texture with a wash of black. Extra Texture Medium was tinted red with acrylics and used as a bold highlight. The gates to the ‘rose garden’ are open, but the way is partially blocked by a thorny rose bush. At the gate is your frog prince.

TOP TOOL…
Old loyalty cards and membership cards can be used
as glue and medium spreaders (and for drawing lines in texture paste).

more realistic, down to earth version.”
PENNY SAVERS…Apothecary
type bottles can be costly from craft suppliers, so I often use empty perfume bottles or spice jars.

In the Details...
By using a wash of black over the crackle paste, the cracks are accentuated, leaving the surface clean and bright in contrast.
To help make the canvases look more like books, I used texture paste along
the edges. While it was still wet, I used a card to make lines in the texture to
represent pages. When it was dry, I aged it with a wash of colour.

DESIGNER TIP…
Be patient and let your crackle mediums dry naturally. Rushing them with a heat tool or radiator can often disrupt the process
and ruin the crackle effect.

Runway GirlBy Shirley BamptonTrim watercolour panel to fit card. Lightly stamp Distress Ink Minis directly onto panel and paint over each one with water to make a block of colour. When dry, overstamp with the text stamp in Smoky Grey. Adhere the panel to the card and scribble a border with a fineliner. Trim the second panel to a tag size, to fit on the front of the card and stamp the Runway image in Onyx Black. Colour with Seedless Preserves and Weathered Wood using a wet paintbrush, then scribble a border with a fineliner. Stamp the sentiment on the tag, punch a hole at the top of the tag and add ribbon, then attach the tag to the card. Cut the ‘happy’ from glitter foam and adhere it across the tag. Add glitter dots and gems to finish.

Take Your Brain with You By Rikka KovasinAs it’s February, my thoughts turned to Valentine’s Day, so I made a card with a heart. But it’s not your typical Valentine.
To follow the theme, I used glitter and sheet of adhesive to make my own glitter paper and also added glitter in the form of embossing glitter. I coated cardstock with the adhesive sheet and then poured the glitter on top. I then sewed this piece to my card base. I layered a stamped piece of patterned paper, stamped heart and the quote on top of each other and added this to the card using foam dots. Lastly, I finished the card with a few rhinestone hearts.

Hip to Be SquareBy Rachel FisherThe theme made me think about parties and the colour scheme came across to me as very retro. Using Distress inks, I created a base using four different colours of ink on a square piece of card. I then overlaid the Joggles stencil and worked with the Wilted Violet, Salty Ocean and Picked Raspberry in different areas on the card. Next I applied sparkle medium through part of the Andy Skinner stencil. Once dry, I stamped the Visible Image stamp in VersaMark then heat embossed. To make the images and words pop, I applied white pen and black pen. Finally, I matted and layered using Wilted Violet and Picked Raspberry to blend in with the main card.

Filled with ThanksBy Lydia Brooke EvansFirstly I stamped the jar image with VersaMark and embossed in silver glitter embossing powder. I then stamped the lid image with blue ink and the inside of the jar image in pink ink. I then stamped the beetroot image dark purple ink to look as if it is inside the jar. To add sparkle, I used the Wink Of Stella pen all over the images and then added Glossy Accents over the top.
I stamped a label shape and sentiment onto vellum, cut it out and added it to the Stick-It sheet. As vellum is transparent you can see adhesive through it but if you use the Stick-It sheet it is not noticeable at all. Once the Glossy Accents on the jar was dry I added the label and finished the card with a few sparkly sequins.

Sparkle and Shine By Georgie ConnellyA fabulously easy card, clean and simple but with lots a sparkle and shine! I knew when seeing this theme I had go for one of my favourite craft supplies – gems!
I started by die cutting ivory card, one each from the dies listed. On the smallest square, I stamped the sentiment in black ink. Mat the ivory squares onto the black card and layer up. Randomly affix the crystals, filling the space around the three dimensional sentiment. The gem colours add a much needed pop of colour to the simple, light background. The Kandi Kane tool is a must have if you love gems, as the adhesive on the Hot Fix crystals is much stronger than regular craft gems.

Dark Rustic EleganceBy Samra LeshinskiI used a piece of chipboard for the base of my cover and created a crackled background by applying gesso, weathered wood paint and one step crackle paint. I applied glass glitter to the die cut frame and hand dyed seam binding ribbon with Dylusions ink. The flowers were cut using the Spellbinders Rose Creations die, inked with Seedless Preserve ink and decorated with glitter, micro beads and gemstones. I stamped the sentiment and then arranged all the embellishments around it, creating a gentle flow of flowers and ribbon.

Step–by–step... Pocket Art Book
I love books – reading them, collecting them, making them, and taking them apart and using them in my artwork. When making my own, I use Alisa Golden’s books, as they are full of different forms with clear instructions.
In her book ‘Expressive Handmade Books’ she outlines how to create a little origami pocket envelope and I’ve adapted this to make a felt pocket for my tiny book.
The book itself is a simple fold from Daler Rowney’s mixed media paper, decorated with paints, stamps and stencils. I filled it with images related to sentences I snipped from an old book of Tennyson’s poetry. It was falling apart and heading for the recycling bin, but I saved a few words, so that Tennyson’s words can still be enjoyed – albeit in a different order to those the esteemed poet placed them in!

5 Fold layered square across so it sits on the third quarter. Press down on the fold to define it.
6 Open the fold, turn the piece over and stitch down each of the folds. Use free machining to draw three flowers and add beads by hand.
To finish the project: Making a book like this gives the opportunity to add hidden pages within the folds. I used paper from an envelope, a scrap of book paper and a sheet stamped with flowers. These were secured using pamphlet stitch.
Penny savers…
Envelopes containing bills or bank statements often have interesting printing on the inside. I use these a lot in my
collages and tiny books.
7 Turn the piece back over and fold as step 5 and fold the embellished triangle over the top.
8 Stitch along the bottom of the envelope, and along the top.

Tantalizing TerrariumBy Louise CrosbieThis is a very simple but effective and fun little project. It’s a nod to the Victorian penchant for collecting stuffed creatures in glass display cases and jars. I stained my card first, using DecoArt misters and stamped my little bird on to it. I filled my jar with moss, flowers and driftwood, adhered my bird onto the driftwood and decorated the jar with sheet music and lace. To finish it off, I added an old wooden door knob to the lid of the jar, which I painted to match with the tones of the bird and the flowers.
Captured BirdsBy Louise CrosbieMore captured birds. For this project, they have been freed from their cage! I have attached them to a lovely Calico Craft Parts wooden bird cage which has been painted with crackle paint to give it a shabby chic look. I have added some bits of broken jewellery to it to add a bit of glamour. The birds were simply stamped out onto card I had coloured with misters, then cut out and glued into place.
Designer tip…
With hanging projects, it’s important to
decorate the back in order for the
piece to look good from all angles.

Blue Bird TinBy Lydia Brooke EvansI covered a small tin box using turquoise Inka-Gold, when this was dry I then used gold Inka-Gold to stamp one of the birds from the stamp set onto the lid to break the solid colour up a little. For the foiled bird, I stamped one of the bird stamps onto some kraft card with VersaMark and heat set this using WOW! Bonding Powder. I added teal foil to the image and ran it through the Minc machine. To give height to the foiled bird I added flowers edged with more Inka-Gold and burlap leaves underneath it. The leaves were made using burlap paper cut using the leaf dies and Inka-Gold was added to the bottom of them to tie the look together.
Pillow BoxBy Lydia Brooke EvansI took a kraft pillow box and stamped all of the bird images onto it using VersaMark and heat set with WOW! Bonding Powder, I then added some teal foil and ran it through the Minc machine.
I added a strip of burlap around the box, and then layered a kraft doily die-cut, paper flowers, burlap leaves and a gold foiled bird. The elegant piece was then finished with a twine bow.

Designer tip…
When using the WOW! Bonding Powder, make sure you prepare the
surface you wish to foil with an anti-static bag or tool, this will help to stop
the powder sticking where you don’t
want it.

Swooping SwallowsBy STAMPlorations Designer Shirley BamptonI swiped Distress Ink Minis across an artist trading card and then polished with a tissue, which helps to blend the colours. With a wet paintbrush I removed some colour from the stamped images and then sealed the inks with Distress Glaze to minimise bleeding into the white paint. I drew a chequered frame with a black Posca pen, filling the gaps with white acrylic paint. A trail of machine stitching adds movement, and helps to fill blank space.
Birds on a SwingBy STAMPlorations Designer Shirley BamptonThose gorgeous birds needed a swing to perch on, so I made one by square-lashing some bamboo skewers together with twine, sealing the knots with Glossy Accents, then once dry, covering it all with gold paint. I stamped the birds onto mixed media paper and coloured them with a palette of Distress inks used as watercolours. I then used tufted wired fibre from my stash, to create the hanger. The birds were adhered to the swing with narrow red liner tape and Glossy Accents.
MaterialsINKS: Distress Minis – Seedless Grape; Picked Raspberry; Squeezed Lemonade; Twisted Citron; Wild Honey; Mermaid Lagoon; Abandoned Coral; Versafine – Onyx Black. OTHER: Mixed media paper; Adirondack Acrylic Paint Dabber – Gold; twine; bamboo skewers; Glossy Accents; wired tufted fibre; red liner tape; Distress Glaze; Posca pen – 3m black; acrylic paint – white.
Designer tip…
You can find step-by-step instructions on square-lashing on the internet.

“Ranger’s Distress Micro Glaze is perfect for developing both interesting resist techniques and exciting textures. It’s great to play around with.”
70 www.craftstamper.com
Masterclass_CSFEB16.indd 70 2/12/15 11:33:24
Distress Micro Glaze is a water resistant sealer for use with Distress ink, markers and stain, and watercolours. It lends itself well to resist
techniques, as it resists many mediums, and protects what’s hidden underneath. It’s this effect in particular that we are going to look at here.
I used watercolour paper and Distress ink, but you can experiment with other surfaces too, such as manila and Specialty Stamping paper. Only apply the glaze to porous surfaces. Just as the glaze resists Distress ink, it will also resist watercolour paint, water based markers, Distress stain and spray and a whole range of other products.
It is easiest to apply the glaze with your finger and you only need very little. You can buff off the excess with a paper towel. Don’t worry about being too precise, it often looks nice if some of the glaze gets outside the lines.

3 Stamp with a darker Distress ink. The glaze will resist the stamping, so it won’t stick to the dots.
Technique 4: Dry Embossed TextureApply Distress Micro Glaze over a dry embossed surface, to get a wonderful, textured fi nish. Use an embossing folder with less open areas.

Butterfly Burlap PanelSmear gesso on a small burlap panel. Prepare a background using technique 1 with Hickory Smoke. When dry, stamp the graph stamp with the same ink. Add a few rub-ons to the background.
Die cut two butterflies and emboss them in the coordinating embossing folder. Use technique 4 on the butterflies, giving them a great texture. Layer with foam dots in between the wings. Finish by splattering Black Soot ink on the background and embellish with a metal sentiment.
Dragonfly Canvas Prepare a canvas board with old book paper and paint with Picket Fence and Hickory Smoke paints. On watercolour paper, stamp the large dragonfly and two small dragonflies with Jet Black ink. Use technique 1 on the dragonflies, and 5 on the rest of the background. Stamp the large dragonflies two more times on watercolour paper, use technique 3 and then cut out and apply with foam dots for dimension.
Add stamped and rub-on words to the background and splatter everything with a little Black Soot Distress Ink. Embellish with Idea-ology pieces.

Art Journaling is a wonderful way of releasing the artist inside
you and producing a permanent and precious illustration of
your innermost thoughts as well as the events, people and
places that mean the most to you. But like any artist, you may need
a little help to overcome the fear of a blank page, and Kate Crane is
the perfect guide as she shares the tips, techniques and skills that
will energise your pages and let your imagination soar.
Kate begins with the equipment you need to start mixed-media art
journaling, with a guide to the journal itself, as well as paints, inks,
pens, stencils, rubber stamps, useful ‘junk’, and anything else you
may need. She shows how to prepare your journal pages for mixed
media, and how to handle and blend acrylic paints. There’s also a
handy guide to colour theory where you’ll learn which colours go
together and which don’t. Lastly,
Kate shows how to add depth to
your backgrounds by adding layer
upon layer, with more acrylic paint,
colour washes, ink sprays, stencils
and rubber stamps.
Relax while you can, because
Kate’s infectious enthusiasm for this
fascinating art-form will soon have
you reaching for your paints and
inks to create vibrant, colourful and
inspirational backgrounds for your
journal.
Join Kate again in ‘Art Journaling –
There are No Mistakes in Art!’ to learn
how to add focal images and
journaling to your backgrounds to
create busy and yet cohesive pages.

Kate Cane is back with another
inspirational two-DVD set that introduces
a whole new set of techniques for
creating beautiful and original art
journals.
In Mix up the Media, Kate shows how all
kinds of hoarded and recycled materials
can be used as to create pages for
a Junk Journal – one that, as well as
containing journal pages, can include
photos, letters, mementos – almost
anything that you treasure and want to
keep safe forever.
To create the mixed media backgrounds
for her Junk Journal pages, Kate gets
busy with the familiar inks and paints,
and adds lots of depth and texture
by adding deli paper printed on a
gelli plate and using her own hand-
cut stencils. Watch her backgrounds
come alive with colour, texture and
contrast as Kate completes them with
lots of added detail to create beautifully

In Art Journaling 5 – Mix Up the Media, Kate Crane created beautiful pages to be used in her Junk Journal – a journal that combines art with the special memories locked up in photographs, letters and anything treasured.
In Junk It Up!, Kate uses doodling, images made from scanned backgrounds, rub-ons, collage, stamps, quotes and many other techniques to complete beautiful and highly individual journal pages, as well as pages with pockets to keep all those special mementos safe.
Kate then shows how to bind the pages together using front and back covers and a canvas spine to produce a very special Junk Journal – a book of memories just for you or to share with friends and loved ones.
But a journal need never be completely fi nished, and Kate shows how you can keep on adding more pages and elements whenever you want. Junk It Up! fi nishes with a gallery showing even more of Kate's inspirational journal pages.

Card Art p.23
By smoothing texture paste through a brick wall design stencil, Mona Pendleton added subtle texture and a surface pattern to her layered cards. To create a dreamy finish, she used muted pinks with intricate die cut doilies completing the romantic look.
Free Stamp Makes on p.28
Hidden, nestled inside Jennie Boxall’s ‘Box of Love’, are a collection of UTEE hearts. Created in decadent deep red and gold, the intricately detailed hearts bring a lovely element of secret messages of love to the project.
The True Book of Love on p.51
To create a softer look for the dreamy, idealistic side of love, Louise Crosbie has used delicate paper roses, rustic cheesecloth and muted pinks and whites, with a shimmering gold bee to create an air of opulence.
Lydia Brooke Evans’ Stamping Contrasts on p.66
We loved Lydia Brooke Evans’ lovely layers on her ‘Pillow Box’ project. She has used a gorgeous combination of rustic, natural brown materials with hints of vivid colours coming through on the paper roses (tipped with luxurious gold) and glossy blue foiling.
Pocket Poetry on p.60
These beautifully fine, botanical-shaped book paper cuts work really well against the colourful mixed media background. By using numbered paper, Sarah Anderson has created a striking surface pattern that makes the fern-like leaves really pop.
Louise Crosbie’s Stamping Contrasts on p.64
To decorate the inside of her ‘Tantalizing Terrarium’, Louise Crosbie has used preserved reindeer moss, driftwood and tiny painted flowers that appear to be opening up for spring. It’s magical little details like these that make a project special.
This issue there’s a focus on beautiful embellishments, from painted paper roses to golden bee charms.

Esther Peck is the winner of our October Take It, Make It Challenge! We loved the rainbow effect created by Brusho pigment powders. The stark black embossing of the trees is a perfect contrast to all the vibrant tones of the background, such a wonderful way of showcasing two techniques together. Esther has created a beautiful card, suitable for any season!

Q: How long have you been a stamper, and how did you get started?
A: I have always dabbled in one craft or another since I was a child. I started off buying my first stamps at a craft fair to make Christmas cards nearly twenty years ago – I still have them!
Q: What are your favourite kinds of stamps, and do you have a favourite stamp company?
A: I think background stamps are my favourite, especially any kind of script or manuscript as I love masking and layering with stamped images. Im not sure I could pick one favourite stamp company, but I particularly love IndigoBlu, Stamp Addicts, PaperArtsy and Crafty Individuals.

TIMI Winners Profile
“I created my project for a challenge theme of ‘Changing Seasons’, just as Summer was moving
into Autumn. I am lucky enough to live in a beautiful rural area and the changing trees and sun setting earlier as I drove home from work made me
appreciate the gorgeous colours of the seasons.”
We can’t wait to see what YOU’LL come up with
for our challenge! Get involved, get stamping and you never know you might get
lucky! We launch a new challenge on the first Friday of every month, to find out more log onto

Q: Describe your style, are you a messy kind of stamper or a more ‘clean and simple’ kind of person?!
A: I am definitely a messy crafter! I love inky, vintage and distressed with lots of stamped layers, but I am equally happy with an elegant clean and simple project sometimes. I don’t like overly fussy projects with lots of embellishments, and I definitely don’t do cute!
Q: What kind of projects do you like creating the most?
A: I enjoy Art Journalling, especially at the end of a stressful week. I find it very therapeutic to express thoughts and feelings in this way. I still enjoy card making and also using my stamps and mixed media on scrapbook layouts.
Q: Apart from stamps, what is the one product you wouldn’t be without when you craft?
A: Tough question – I think it would have to be stencils (assuming I was allowed ink or paint of some kind!).
