Director General’s MessageThis was the last quarter of the financial year and we look back with pride at our achievement
during the year. In this financial year we exceeded our MoU Parameters like number of
research papers published (National/International), Research projects completed, Continuing
education programme organized, new facilities created through Capital Grants, Patents files
etc. and fared very well in receipts. With the co-operation of the officer and staff of the
Institution, we could publish 217 Technical papers including 17 in the internationally reputed
journals. CPRI also is awarded with 3 patents and has filed 9 new patents.
This quarter saw CPRI in association with CBIP organize the “International Conference on
Physical, Cyber and System Security for Power Sector' during 27-28 Feb. 2012 at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi which received overwhelming response from the stake holders. Our unique facilities were utilized
by many a foreign clients like SBI Connectors Espana, Spain, M/s. Indkom Engineering sdn. Bhd, Malayasia. Many
delegates from USA, New-isenburg, Srilanka, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Ethiopia visited CPRI to enhance further the
relations. Our stall at ELECRAMA 2012 and CLIKTRONIKA 2012 were well received. The safety week and National
productivity week were celebrated by organizing demonstration and lectures from eminent speakers from the field.
We are consistently raising the bar in all respect and strive to serve our clients and stake holders in the years to come.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
ON PHYSICAL, CYBER AND SYSTEM
SECURITY FOR POWER SECTOR,
VIGYAN BHAVAN, NEW DELHI
CPRI in association with CBIP organized the
“International Conference on Physical, Cyber and System
Security for Power Sector “during 27-28 Feb 2012 at
Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. The conference was
inaugurated by Shri. P.Uma Shankar, Secretary, Ministry
of Power (MoP), Government of India. In his inaugural
address he mentioned that security is an important area
in power sector too. He felt that there is need for
continuous check on these threats and to know how to
mitigate and emphasized the need for guidelines. Shri.
A.S.Bakshi, Chair Person, CEA was guest of honour and in
his address he pointed out that utilities need to address
the physical security as well as cyber security. If these two
are taken care, system security follows. He felt that there
is need for utility engineer to know about the security
system since present day use of ICT integrates business
process with system operation.

Shri. N. Murugesan in his welcome address formally
welcomed the dignitaries, invitees, delegates and
sponsors. He expressed his thanks to MoP and CEA for
their support to this first of its kind conference in India on
security topics exclusively for power sector. He
mentioned that it is of need of time for utilities to ask for
security compliance from vendors for their systems and
to adopt audit procedures. He also informed that CEA,
CPRI and BIS are coming out with standardization
guidelines for utilities including security and committees
are working to bring out standards.
The commencement of construction of the LED
laboratory started with the traditional Bhoomi pooja at
the site by Director General Shri. N. Murugesan. The
LED evaluation laboratory is expected to cater to the
growing needs of testing of the solid state LED lighting
systems in the country.

New R & D Facility Created
EXTENDED TEST FACILITY AT INSTRUMENTATION DIVISION
Energy Meter Testing Laboratory of Instrumentation
Division has augmented the laboratory by adding
“Combination Wave form Generator” with External
CDN (coupling/Decoupling) to conduct Impulse/Surge
voltage upto 10kV to conduct the requirement of
National/International Standard as well as Power Utility.
The equipment generate Impulse Voltage Wave form of
1.2/50 µs upto 10kV and short circuit current wave form
8/20 µs upto 5kA as per IEC 61000-4-5 standard.
The generator can be used for Impulse voltage as Surge
Withstanding test on electronic components and
electronic devices namely Energy Meters, Relays,
communication device etc.
A 200 kA coaxial shunt for measurement of short
circuit current upto 200 kArms for 1 sec. is
developed at CPRI, Bhopal and commissioned
successfully. Commercial testing is also conducted
using these shunts.

CPRI DESIGNED AND DEVELOPED TRANSMISSION LINE TOWER
USING FRP COMPOSITE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN INDIA
In recent years, building new
transmission lines has been
difficult. Often, the biggest
impediment to a transmission
project is securing a ROW
(Right of Way) access. It is
a d v a n t a g e o u s t o b o t h
transmission line developers and
land owners to minimize the
space required for a transmission
line. Support structures play a vital role on the
transmission of power from generating station to
substation within the available corridor. New types of
structures for a transmission line are to be developed in
order to reduce the dimensions of the line both in the
horizontal and vertical directions. Compact transmission
line design is the result of this space-saving strategy. New
transmission lines are designed to take up less lateral
space by utilizing modern materials and altering tower
geometries. These structure in the modern designs are Shri. M. SelvarajEngineering Officer

simpler and required less space, reducing their visual
impact. These designs reduce phase to phase and phase to
structure distances, which in turn increase voltage
gradients on conductors and reduced flashover voltage
thresholds.
For the first time in the country, CPRI developed first full
scale 66 kV D/C FRP Composite transmission tower with
insulated cross arm and tested successfully by simulating
all the specific loading conditions. This composite tower
is also tested for electrical performance under dry and
wet conditions. The weight of tower is approximately
one third of steel counterpart which can be easily and
rapidly assembled, transported and erected at the site.
This tower can also be used as an ERS ( Emergency
Restoration Structure ) tower and can be used as a
regular power line support structure where there are
constraints in ROW (Right Of Way) and prone to
earthquakes.
The leg members, bracings and the cross arm members of
the tower are made from E-Glass and Epoxy resin
through pultrusion manufacturing process. These
materials were chosen based on their strength
characteristics as well as their availability. Suitable
structural connections have been developed to assemble
and dismantle the tower structure quickly and also to
ensure safe transfer of loads.
Advantages
1. Light weight & Easy to assemble with modular
construction
2. Reduction in transportation & labor cost for
erection at the site.
3. FRP tower with insulated cross arm reduces R O W
requirement.
4. FRP insulated cross arm suitable for up-rating/up
grading of existing metallic tower
5. ROW savings of about 17 % and tower height
reduction about 20 %
6. Reduced man hours and equipment’s to build the
tower.
Although building the next generation transmission line
tower from composite material is feasible, there is a need
to study the long term degradation of the composite,
when it is exposed to a harsh environment.
The development of FRP composite tower was funded
from CPRI Research Contingency grants.
