The aim of the Gateshead School Sport Partnership (GSSP) is for all school age (4-19) children and young people in Gateshead (and

external partner schools) to experience and enjoy High Quality Physical Educa�on, Physical Ac�vity and School Sport (PEPASS),

building the founda�ons for an ac�ve and healthy lifestyle.

This professional learning programme provides a framework for the consistent delivery of high quality PE, physical ac�vity and

school sport. It will support improvements in the delivery of teaching and learning that will promote par�cipa�on, progress and

performance.

Course evalua�ons for the GSSP Professional Learning modules delivered in 2015-16 show 100% sa�sfac�on and immediate impact

MATALAN SPORTING PROMISE - TOP SPORT


This course is suitable for KS2 teachers and adults other

than teachers who want to develop a curriculum and

mul/-skills approach to PE at KS2.


Spor/ng Promise is an award-winning grass roots sports

ini/a/ve. Through a partnership between Matalan and

the Youth Sport Trust, it aims to ensure that children

across the country have vital access to sports ac/vity in

school. This one day prac/cal course also provides

delegates with resource cards, posters and access to

online resources.

Course outcomes

• Primary teachers are experts at giving children the

tools and passion to learn. The Spor/ng Promise

programme builds on this to support par/cipants to

become more confident and competent in teaching

1.6 CLASSROOM PRACTITIONER 3 (QUALIFICATION COURSE)

TEACHING AND DEVELOPING PHYSICAL LITERACY (BASIC MOVES LEVEL 1 & 2 QUALIFICATION)


This course will help R/KS1 prac//oners build their confidence

and competence in developing children’s fundamental

movement skills through school PE, in extra-curricular clubs and

in community ac/vi/es, including play.


The Basic Moves Programme helps all children develop their

physical literacy skills and abili/es - travelling, object control

and balance movements that are so important for an ac/ve life.

Without these important movement skills, many ac/vi/es are

just not available to children, adolescents and adults.

Developing children’s basic movements must not be leH to

chance. Furthermore, as childhood is the best /me to learn

these movements, the Basic Moves Programme has been

developed for children in the pre-school and infant school years

and is delivered in school PE, in extra-curricular clubs and in

community ac/vi/es, including play. Basic Moves classes are

not only enjoyable, they are worthwhile, developmentally

appropriate and for all children.

The Basic Moves Level 2 training course is a two - day intensive

programme that introduces the background to Basic Moves and

the Basic Moves Framework.

• Level 2 Basic Moves (physical literacy) Qualifica/on course

This workshop is ideally suited for staff in any school that are

par/cipa/ng in the 2017 Gateshead Schools Dance Fes/val.


Delivered by Cheryl Day (Dance Specialist), this workshop is

based around various elements of dance choreography. It

is designed for to support staff with theirs schools

MODULE 1 (ASSESSMENT AND FEEDBACK)


Experienced and qualified primary teachers who are undertaking

the role of PE Subject Co-ordinator within their school.

Teachers of KS1 and/or KS2 PE who need further support in

developing effec/ve assessment and repor/ng processes.


This is a half day theory course that focuses on the process and

principles of assessment. The course includes why we assess,

effec/ve assessment, recording and repor/ng on student

aKainment and progress in PE.

Assessment for Learning Core Task cards will be provided to help

you implement a bespoke assessment model in your school.

Course outcomes

• Acquire a range of assessment strategies including both

forma/ve and summa/ve assessment.

• Understand how life without levels impacts upon assessment

in PE and be able to communicate aKainment, achievement

and progress at the point of transfer to secondary school.

• Develop repor/ng processes relevant to individual situa/ons.

• Be aware of external accountability measures, including

Ofsted and the Na/onal Curriculum.

• Assessment strategies that help to increase your children’s

understanding of their own performance and that of others,

Experienced and qualified primary teachers who are

undertaking the role of PE Subject Co-ordinator within their

school.


This is a half day theory course that will help and support

prac//oners to understand the role of a PE Co-ordinator and

shape a vision for PE and school sport in your school.

Course outcomes

• An understanding of the role of a PE Co-ordinator in the

current PE, physical ac/vity and school sport landscape.

• An understanding of how to shape a vision for PE, physical

ac/vity and school sport (PEPASS) within your school

seJng.

• Ability to priori/se needs through a self evalua/on

process using current programmes and resources i.e.

School Games Mark, GSSP High Quality PE Award & GSSP

Blazing the Trail.

• Iden/fica/on of the links between whole school and PE

aims and objec/ves.

• Produc/on of a development plan for PE and school sport

focussing on both maintenance and development.

• How to deliver a PEPASS offer that complements and

builds on the priori/es of the school.


The following courses will provide a good basic knowledge of subject leadership in PE and school

sport at primary level. They are designed to develop knowledge of subject leadership in primary

PE and school sport (PESS). Attendance on all three modules will provide a good introductory

pathway to both the role of a primary PE Co-ordinator and the national Level 5 Certificate in

Primary School Physical Education Specialism and Level 6 Award in Primary School Physical

Education Subject Leadership.

MODULE 3 (LESSON PLANNING AND

CURRICULUM DESIGN )


Experienced and qualified primary teachers who are undertaking

the role of PE Subject Co-ordinator within their school.

Teachers of KS1 and/or KS2 PE who need further support in

planning progressive PE lessons that meet the needs of their

learners.


This is a half day theory course that focuses on the principles of

short and medium term planning. It will provide prac//oners

with support in planning PE lessons that are inclusive and

appropriately challenging, and how to promote effec/ve learning

at all Key Stages that meet the needs of your pupils.

Lesson plan templates that support the development of

outstanding teaching and examples of curriculum maps are

provided as part of this course.

Course outcomes

• An understanding of what an effec/ve and appropriate PE

curriculum looks like.

• Knowledge of how to plan a series of lessons that promotes

children’s progress within PE.

• Knowledge of how to plan for transi/on between key

stages.

• Strategies to engage and challenge at their appropriate

level.

• Increased competence and confidence in the delivery of

more engaging PE lessons that challenge your pupils to

develop skills appropriate to their ability.

• An understanding of what your pupils need to be beKer

prepared for the next stage in their PE journey.

EMBEDDING HIGH QUALITY PE AND USING IT TO RAISE WHOLE SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENT

5.1 ACTIVE LITERACY: USING PE AND SPORT TO

RAISE ACHIEVEMENT IN ENGLISH


KS1 and KS2 teachers who would like to explore a more ac/ve

mul/-sensory approach to teaching English. This would also be

ideal for Literacy Co-ordinators.


This is a one day prac/cal course that uses the context of PE and

sport alongside prac/cal learning approaches to support the

teaching of English across the school. Based on research and trials

in primary schools across the country, this course uses exis/ng

resources alongside the new Na/onal Curriculum Programmes of

Study. It has been wriKen by teachers for teachers, so it really

gets to the heart of the challenges and offers evidence based

solu/ons.

The morning focuses on KS1 and the aHernoon on KS2, but all

delegates should aKend for the whole day.

Delegates will receive prac/cal teaching strategies alongside

resource cards linked to reading, wri/ng, speaking and

listening for KS1 and a specifically commissioned book for KS2.

The format of this course provides numerous opportuni/es to

share and develop ideas in collabora/on with other teachers.

Course outcomes

• An understanding of the link between PE/Sport and English

and how to apply it to the school seJng.

• An opportunity to share ideas and be part of a learning

community that develops good prac/ce for literacy teaching

across all key stages.

• Ac/ve learning strategies and resources to help to provide

more engaging and inspiring lessons. This will in turn help

your pupils to aspire to achieve in literacy through ac/ve

learning.


KS1 and KS2 teachers who would like to explore a more ac/ve

developed for ac/ve maths teaching, including an

introduc/on to the ‘Maths of the Day’ teaching programme.

maths and how to apply it to their school seJng.

• An opportunity to share ideas and be part of a learning

community that develops good prac/ce for numeracy

teaching across all Key Stages.

• Ac/ve learning strategies and resources to help to

provide more engaging and inspiring lessons. This will in

turn help your pupils to aspire to achieve in numeracy

through ac/ve learning.

The following national Youth Sport Trust courses will develop strategies for embedding high

Talking Governors is a termly session led by Steve Horne –

discuss how these may apply to your Governing Body.

The GSSP will be present at this session and we will support

a discussion regarding the current PESS landscape and the

government’s PE and Sport Premium funding and

accountability measures in a suppor/ve forum. We will help

Governors develop their own knowledge and experience

around this topic.
