PRUH04- Shannon Angwin. I believe that it is important to understand friendships and that as teachers’ it is important that we provide the opportunity for our students to make friends through different activities. To do this I have created 3 different lesson plans that will ensure students are going to enjoy learning about well-being and friendships with other students. The activities aim to help build children’s confidence and self-esteem so that they feel they are a good friend to others (Cunningham, 2014). Lesson plan 1 is used to highlight the importance of being kind to other people and how we can make people feel good about themselves. The lesson will also provide students with something to take away from the lesson to show their parents and other friends. By doing this, I am aiming to help the children to feel proud of themselves. Lesson plan 2 is a worksheet that is used to highlight to students how they are good friends to others and what we should do if we see another student that us being bullied by another student. This activity sheet also enables students to understand their own perception of themselves as a friend to others, this will help students to feel good about themselves and help their own well-being. Lesson plan 3 provides students with the opportunity to display how many other friends they have in the classroom. It is a fun craft activity that will engage all students in the topic of friendships and kind words that are associated with friendship.

LESSON TITLE: Making kind word badges.

Lesson number: lesson 1- 20-30 minutes.

Learning objective: To understand the concept of kind words and to create a badge for another student that can be worn.

Learning outcomes: ALL STUDENTS will create a badge for another student with a kind word.

MOST STUDENTS will create a badge with a personalised kind message. Students will also understand why we should choose to use nice words and speak a nice manner to others.

SOME STUDENTS will have more than one word to describe a classmate.

Materials/Equipment needed

Bullying- students will understand why we chose to be kind and why we should not bully.

Friendship- students will understand how good it feels to be kind to others and ways we can make new friends.

Students will make a badge for someone on another table that they wouldn’t usually sit with or interact as much as others. This promotes friendship and the understanding of friendship.

Starter (5 mins) Classroom teacher will create a mind map on the whiteboard of ‘kind words’. Teacher will go around the classroom ensuring all students say 1 positive word each.

The teacher will also spend 2-3 minutes explaining what bullying is and why we should never bully anyone else.

Main activity (20/30 mins) To create a badge for another classmate. The badge will say one positive word that reminds the student of their classmate. The badge will be made out of paper and then laminated and stuck onto school jumper/ shirt with double sided tape.

To provide another classmate with their badge that has been personalised with one kind word to describe the classmate. Each person will have one made by someone else.

Students will understand what words are classed as ‘positive’ words and why we chose to be kind over unkind.

Students will have made a new class friend from making these badges.

Badges- one per student.

Scissors to cut the badges once ready.

Colouring pens/ pencils.

Whiteboard/ pen- teacher.

Laminator.

Double sided tape cut into squares to stick on the back.

KEY VOCABULARY

Resources for this lesson.

Below is a page of 8 badges that are the perfect size for the badges. One page will print out enough badges for 8 people, multiple pages can be printed if needed.

The students will choose between the 2 different shapes.

Teacher can make the decision to cut these shapes out before hand or can provide scissors to the students for them to do this themselves.

Once cut out, students will choose their word to add to the badge and then it is ready to colour.

Once created, students have their badges laminated- this can be done by students or teacher, this is a decision the teacher can make beforehand.

Once laminated the double-sided tape will be placed on the back of the badges and then given to the student that it was created for.

Friendship- This activity highlights to students what makes a good friend, whilst also highlighting to them that they are friends to others.

Students will be able to see their own names on other students friendship bracelets. This highlights to them that they have many friends.

Main activity (20 mins) Students will draw around their own hand and will write a kind word on each finger.

Students will then use beads to make a bracelet around their drawn-on wrist.

Following on, students will make accessories dangling from their bracelets with names of their friends on it.

Students will have thought of at least 5 friends that they feel makes a good friend.

Students will have created a bracelet to display on the wall for other students and parents to see.

Students will have added their personal friends to their bracelets.

Paper.

Pens/ pencils.

Beads.

Craft glue to stick on the beads.

Coloured paper to create dangling shapes with friend names on it.

KEY VOCABULARY

Resources for this lesson.

Blank paper and a pen to draw around their own hands. Beads and glue to stick on a friendship bracelet around the drawn-on wrist. Coloured paper in shapes to glue onto the ‘dangling parts’ of the bracelets. Below I have added an image of what the end product will look like.

Friendship, bracelets, craft, poster.

Students will start by drawing around their hand- either hand is fine.

Finally, the teacher will display these onto the wall for all students to look at.

This is also a good opportunity for parents to see what their child has been doing at school to highlight well being and friendship.

Students will cut out shapes to glue on below the bracelet with their friends names. Students can choose to write as many friends as they wish.

Students will stick on beads of their choices- if a teacher does not have any beads, they can scrunch up small bits of tissue paper into balls to stick on instead.

Students will write a word in bold on each finger that they feel describes them as a good friend to other people.
