Fatigue Resistance of Shear Stud Connectors on Steel GirdersThe fatigue resistance of bridges is a key topicrelated to transportation infrastructure durability. Itis especially important for bridge components thatcannotbeinspectedforsignsoffatigue.In2014,tworesearch projects on the fatigue resistance of studshearconnectorswereinitiatedatUW,sponsoredbytheOntarioMinistryofTransportationandtheSteelStructures Education Foundation (with additionalsupportfromNSERC).Anin-depthliteraturereviewdefinedthegapsthattheexperimentalandanalyticalresearch would address. Specifically, these gapsinclude the inconsistent practice of using push-testdataasasafeguide todesigningshearstuds incompositebeams, andthequestionoftheconsequenceoffailureofindividualshearstudsonthecapacityofabridge. The latterquestion isespecially importantas bridges become older and their replacement isdelayedinjurisdictionswithaginginfrastructureandlimitedmaintenancebudgets.

Development of Durability Performance related Test Methods for Pervious Concrete PavementThis research is being funded by the Ministry ofTransportation Ontario (MTO) under the HighwayInfrastructureInnovationFundingProgram(HIIFP).Other funding provided for this project is from theCement Association of Canada (CAC) and theNatural Science and EngineeringResearchCouncilofCanada(NSERC).

Theintroductionofperviousconcreteintopavementsincoldweatherclimaticregions, specificallyCanada, was driven by their sustainable benefits. However,therehasbeencautioninthepavementindustrytotheuseofperviousconcreteinclimatesthatexperiencefreeze-thawcycles.

This research was intended to examine which testmethods should be used to ensure a high qualitypervious concrete pavement is achieved. Anotherobjective of this research was to evaluate theperformancecriteriaforperviousconcretepavementtested for flexural strength, ravelling, abrasion, permeability, scaling resistance, and freeze-thawresistance.

Themajoroutcomeof this research is todefine thedraft testmethods for pervious concrete pavement. Also, fieldsampleswerecollectedfromselectedfieldsitesandthedraftmethodswereperformedtoevaluatethe applicability of the developed testmethods anddetermined the probable reason of observed fielddistresses.

Glassisidealforrecyclingandcanberecycledmultipletimes.Currently, theusageofglassisincreasingespecially in the food and beverage industry due to health concerns. Therefore, recycling of glasses isbecomingabigdilemmainCanada.Differentglassessuchascontainermixedglasses, floatglass, windshieldglass and contaminated glass are being vigorously collected but poorly recycled.Less than 30%of the400,000tonnesofwasteglassinOntarioiscurrentlyrecycledandabigpartofthisisfinepowderwastewhichgoestolandfills.

One solution is foam glass aggregate. Foam glass is normallymade from 97% recycled glass. It is aninnovativelightweightmaterialforapplicationsinroadconstructionandbuildingindustries.Therecycledglassusedinthepresentformulationcanbetakenfromclearandmixedcolouredindustrialwastes.
