Featured Parks, Trails and Open SpaceCOMMUNITY PARKSCOVINGTON COMMUNITY PARK 17649 SE 240th Street (formerly known as 180th/240th Park) This recently developed 30-acre community park features a new multi-purpose grass field, portable restrooms, parking, 1.5 miles of paved, gravel and natural surface trails winding through woodlands, wetlands and meadows. Little Soos Creek can be found on the southwestern portion of the park.

JENKINS CREEK PARK 18050 SE 267th Street This 22-acre community park features paved and natural surface walking trails, boardwalk, a wildlife viewing deck, picnic tables, park benches, lawn, woodlands, stream and a pond. An improvement project consisting of a new bridge,

boardwalk and paved trail is scheduled for late 2015. It will provide access from 180th through to Jenkins Creek Elementary. On-street parking is on 267th Street.

NEIGHBORHOOD AND POCKET PARKSCRYSTAL VIEW PARK 25412 170th Place SE This 2.2 acre developed neighborhood park provides a half-court basketball, playground equipment, picnic table, park benches, lawn area, woodlands, and a stream. On-street parking is on 170th Place.

EVERGREEN PARK 19801 SE 262nd Street A 1.7-acre undeveloped pocket park with a natural surface path is located between 197th and 199th Avenues. Plans include pre-school age play equipment, natural areas and a walking path.

FRIENDSHIP PARK 15808 SE 254th Place This small .6-acre developed pocket park has half-court basketball, playground equipment, reservable picnic shelter, picnic tables, park bench, concrete walking path, and lawn area for informal play. Parking is available on south side of the street. For shelter reservations, call 253-480-2400.

In addition to public parks, there are 12 privately owned and operated Homeowners Association (HOA) pocket parks ranging in size from .05 acres to 1.3 acres and three HOA neighborhood parks ranging in size from 2.9 acres to 43 acres. These are available for use to Homeowners Association residents.

SPECIAL FACILITIESCOVINGTON AQUATIC CENTER 18230 SE 240th Street This large six lane, 100-foot length indoor pool has a water slide, diving board, rope swing, water toys and party room. Programs include swimming lessons, public swims, lap swims, water exercise classes and pool rentals. GERRY CRICK SKATE PARK 25064 164th Avenue SE Near Mattson Middle School, users enjoy this .2-acre facility with a 7,000 square foot skating area with numerous above ground ramps, platforms and features and a portable restroom.

TRAILSCEDAR DOWNS PARK (KING COUNTY)/CEDAR CREEK PARK (CITY OF COVINGTON) A one-mile natural surface trail winds through 78 acres of mature forest including three tributaries of Jenkins Creek. The primary access is from SE 253rd Street at 212th Place SE found in the Cedar Downs neighborhood in Maple Valley.

JENKINS CREEK TRAIL A .6-mile in long paved trail located within a 4.2 acre natural area along Jenkins Creek. The primary access is from the SE 261st Street cul de sac, east of 180th Avenue SE.

RAINIER VISTA TRAIL A Scenic .6-Mile Paved Trail Meandering Along A Wooded Stream Within The 23.9 Acre Rainier Vista Natural Area. It Is Located South Of Se 240Th Street At 185Th Avenue Se With Multiple Access Points.

SOOS CREEK PARK AND TRAIL (KING COUNTY) This 6 mile paved regional trail has park benches and runs north from Covington towards Renton. A separate soft surface trail for equestrians exists along most portions of the trail. Local access trailheads with parking include: 148th Ave SE at SE 266th Street (restroom); SE 256th Street just east of 148th Ave SE; and 148th Ave SE at SE 249th Street (restroom, picnic area).

WINGFIELD TRAIL A .25-mile trail winding through part of the 7.1 acre Wingfield Natural Area. Primary access is on SE 261st Street, west of 170th Place SE, in the Coho Creek neighborhood.

The park’s most unique feature is its “geysers” or methane seeps. Park activities include whitewater rafting and model airplane flying. The park is open year round for day use only. NOLTE STATE PARK36921 Veazie-Cumberland Road Enumclaw, WA 98022 • 360-825-4646A 117-acre day-use park with 7,174 feet of freshwater shoreline on Deep Lake in the Green River Gorge. Covered with forests and blessed with water the land was a resort for many years before it was donated to the State Parks Department. Summer hours: 8 a.m. to dusk. Closed October 1 - March 31.

Are you prepared? Being prepared can change everything. By planning ahead, you can increase the chances of survival for you and your family, not to mention gain peace of mind knowing you are in control.

Catastrophes can happen at any time. Preparing for three days will help you make it through many of the disasters you’ll face in the Puget Sound region, including major storms and even small earthquakes. However, to make it through a major catastrophe, like Hurricane Katrina or the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, you’ll need to be prepared for longer, at least 7 to 10 days.

Catastrophes can happen at any time and are likely to happen here. Imagine you are at work, on the road, or at home during a catas-trophe. How would you communicate with loved ones? Are you prepared to survive without essential services, such as running water, electricity, or phones for 7 to 10 days?

✔ Make a family emergency communication plan, identify an out-of-state contact

✔ Plan for people, pets and property✔ Review and practice your emergency plan

✔ Build a kit for at least 7 to 10 days✔ Save important documents/records on USB drives,

store one at home and one in a safety deposit box✔ Create customized kits for home, office and vehicle

✔ Get involved – Create networks of neighbors and co-workers, work together to pool resources

✔ Participate in a training – CPR, first aid, Community Emergency Response Training (CERT)

✔ Learn how to reduce hazards (e.g. shutting off gas supply if needed, strap water heater in place, etc.)

Build a Kit for at Least 7 to 10 Days

Imagine if resources aren’t available for seven or more days. You might have to take care of minor injuries and access to resources will likely be limited. Help your family be better prepared by gathering additional supplies and customizing the list to meet your needs. Once you have the basics, think about items you could use to help yourself and others, or simply improve your comfort.

Identify a storage container or key location to place your survival kit, then gather and store supplies. Supplies include water and food as well as items for shelter and warmth, first aid, communication, personal hygiene and sanitation. It’s possible your home could be damaged and you may have to evacuate; be sure to include a backpack or similar bag so you can pack some of these items to go. Many of these supplies you may already have at home.

Below are suggested basic supplies to survive for 7 to 10 days. ■ Water – one gallon per person per day for drinking

and sanitation■ Food – at least 7 to 10 day supply of non-perishable food

per person■ Cash – ATMs won’t work without electricity■ Battery-powered radio and extra batteries■ Flashlight and extra batteries■ First aid kit■ Whistle to signal for help■ Filter mask or cotton t-shirt to help filter the air■ Moist towelettes for sanitation■ Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities if needed■ Manual can opener for food■ Shelter items like tents, tarps and rope ■ Garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation■ Unique family needs: supplies for infants, pets and elderly,

prescriptions, and important family documents
