COVID-19 in Young People• Less than 10% of Lexington’s COVID cases in children 5-17 years• Symptoms in children are similar to adults, but usually milder• Hospitalizations and deaths are uncommon in children (about 1% of

Lexington’s COVID hospitalizations; no deaths in children in Lexington)• Children with COVID are likely to produce about the same amount of virus as

adults• Spreading can occur among young people, though children and youth are not

currently felt to be as key to the spread of COVID as they are in the spread of influenza

• COVID is spread more efficiently than influenza• Physical distancing, mask wearing and handwashing all help curb the spread of

COVID

About UK Health Corps

● At the guidance of our team of public health experts and in partnership with our world-class academic medical center, the university built a modern public health infrastructure for the fall 2020 semester.

● UK Health Corps serves as a support hub for students, faculty and staff to access services, information and referrals related to COVID-19.

● Seven days a week, our contact tracing team coordinates with university data analysts to detect trends, implement interventions and provide tailored support to members of the university community.

● Our efforts are informed by the required daily screening, baseline testing, wastewater testing and data-driven retesting.

Orange GuidanceMultiple factors such as:• Importance of in person education to the social, emotional, and

academic growth and well-being of students;• Current level and rising/falling trend of community COVID-19

activity;• Identification of cases among students and staff;• Other public health indicators used to assess community

COVID-19 impact; and• Effective implementation of student and staff cohorting that

enables quarantining cohorts, rather closing the entire school.
