In the months following Pearl Harbor : Japan captured the U.S. outposts of Guam and Wake Island and the British colonies of Hong Kong and Singapore.

While American forces fought in North Africa in 1942, the U.S. Navy began fighting Japan

U.S. General Douglas Macarthur is appointed the supreme Allied Commander in the Pacific Theater. Eisenhower would be his counterpart in Europe.

Macarthur is stationed in the Philippines and is ordered to leave. The United States does not have enough troops in place to protect the Philippines. They leave prior to the Japanese invasion. Macarthur makes a vow that “I shall return.”

The Japanese invasion leads to the Bataan Death March. A brutal forced march of American and Filipino prisoners of war during early World War II. 70,000 to 75,000 POW’s were taken prisoner after the surrender of Bataan. The 63-mile march resulted in an estimated 7,000 to 10,000 deaths.

American spirits were lifted in April 1942 when eighty men all of them volunteers for this dangerous mission.

Colonel James Doolittle led a successful bombing run on Tokyo in a move designed to strike fear into the very heart of the Japanese.

The Doolittle Raiders, Sixteen B-25 bombers took off from the deck of the USS Hornet, led by (then Col.) Jimmy Doolittle. They were to fly over Japan, drop their bombs and fly on to land in a part of China that was still free.

The raid on Tokyo did two things; 1) it increased American morale 2) More importantly, it proved to the Japanese high command that their home islands were not invulnerable to American attacks and causing them to shift vital resources to their defense.

Six months after Pearl Harbor, the Battle of Midway was a major turning point in the war with Japan.

The battle of Midway flipped the war in the pacific into the Allies favor. It was crucial that it happened towards the beginning of the U.S. entry into the war.

It allowed The U.S. to get geared up and we out produced more weapons than the Japanese

MacArthur devised the strategy of Island Hopping to fight the Japanese in the Pacific. The U.S. would “island hop” past Japan’s heavily defended islands and seize the more easily-defeated outposts. There, the United States could build landing strips and employ air power to cut Japan's supply lines.

Our Goal was to get close enough to Japan to bomb it 24 / 7

Many big battles, one that allows us to achieve our goal of 24 / 7 bombing is Iwo Jima.

As the U.S. marched across the sea toward Japan, daily raids by American B-29 bombers were destroying Japanese cities and killing thousands of civilians. For Japan, defeat was inevitable, but the island nation refused to surrender.
