Spring Care and Maintenance for Pavers and Slabs SPRING 2015 COVERING GROUND Paver and patio products from County Materials require very little maintenance. However, proper lifetime care is important to sustain the integrity, long-lasting quality, and investment of any installed hardscape project. Below are general guidelines for year-round care and maintenance. For additional information, reference the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute’s (ICPI) Tech Spec Technical Bulletins. Washing- General washing guidelines are provided for the following: organic stains, including fruit, soil and leaf residue, algae and moss stains, and efflorescence. Efflorescence is a white powder- like deposit that sometimes appears on concrete or clay pavers. For these type of stains, wash with a hose and stiff broom or pressure washer. Care must be taken if pressure washing is done to avoid removing excess joint sand or damaging paving material. Water pressure should be comparable to the average pressure from a home watering hose. Suggested Cleaning Agents for Stains- To reduce staining, periodically remove organic material such as fruit droppings, leaf litter and/or grass clippings. There are many different chemical cleaning agents for the removal of stains. Cleaners are specific to their particular type of stain. Acid cleaners must never be used. Consult with the professional installer or paver and patio product representative for recommended industry cleaners, and follow the instructions on the material packaging. Weeding- Remove large weeds by hand as needed. You may use a herbicide for smaller weeds. Joint material should be swept in shortly after washing, and once the surface has dried. Without joint material, paving products are subject to movement. Joint material should be installed according to industry standards and the manufacturers specifications, and joint material should be completely removed from the surface of the pavers and slabs. County Materials recommends natural sand (as specified by ASTM C144) as the preferred jointing material for use with County Materials’ concrete pavers and slabs, and a sand joint stabilizer from either Surebond or Prosoco. Settling and Frost Heaving- Due to the nature of the Midwest’s freeze/thaw cycles, dry laid pavers or patio stones may move with the frost. Outdoor Living Project Showcase:Replacing an outdated deck and uninspiring view of the neighbor’s fence, this 1,577 sq. ft. backyard living area offers a multitude of amenities and ample room for entertaining.

Multiple patio levels solve the design problem created by a 28” drop between the patio door and the lawn. As a bonus, the patio levels create inviting spaces for intimate conversations even during a large gathering. The 7-sided cedar roof over the outdoor kitchen further defines the multi-tiered effect, along with the cedar arbor shading the living area adjoining the hot tub. A fireplace with custom wings creates a focal point for the back of the site.

In the interests of remaining level for furniture, the patio was engineered to allow rainwater to run through the cracks without entering the foundation of the house. This was done with graded layers of washed rock and aggregate under the pavers.

Every effort was made to preserve the natural feel of the site, which included designing the patio around existing trees. The innovative drainage design also keeps the trees hydrated. Three styles of pavers; Grand Lifestyle®, Lifestyle® and Destination® Pavers, were combined for a rustic look that provides both unity and variation in the design. The pavers and polished concrete countertops compliment the natural stone used in the outdoor kitchen, and reflect the woodsy look of the adjacent planted area.
