As a student body we have had an amazing year so far, raising nearly £13,000 for RAG (read more on page 6). This wouldn’t be possible without student groups, staff and their departments getting involved with the fundraising. I’d like to say a massive thank you from myself and the rest of the Student Association for all of your efforts and help so far.

This year we have managed to break the record for the biggest social at Reaseheath, that being Halloween, with over 450 of you turning up!

The Student Association have come into the new year with a massive confidence boost from the highly successful Winter Ball, in which we

sold out tickets for both the ball and the meal! I don’t know about you but it was an amazing night!

So far we are having a very successful RAG week and I am personally very excited for Masquerade RAG ball! I hope we can all, as a collective, keep up this good work and keep making the most of your time here. Keep checking Coverage Xtra and the Student Association Facebook page for updates on the Summer Ball, tickets will be on sale next week and we recommend you buy them early to avoid disappointment!

Hi guys, welcome to your first issue of Coverage for the year. I know I’ve met a lot of you already, but I’m Rob, the Student President for this year.

Dear fellow students,This year, as I am sure you are aware, the Raising and Giving (RAG) charity is Macmillan Cancer Support. So far we have organised events including bag packs, cake sales, eyebrow waxing and Christmas present wrapping. We’ve also stewarded at the annual Battle of Nantwich (Holy Holly Day) and the College’s Lambing Weekends. Whilst at various socials we have provided face painting and have sold merchandise. This has helped raise a grand total of £9,120.05 so far (with more payments due to come in soon).

On behalf of the Student Association, I would like to say a personal thank you to WM Morrison’s Nantwich and Winsford for the opportunity to raise funds by bag packing for customers and doing a store collection over the busy festive season, from which we raised over £1200. It was an enjoyable day working alongside the friendly staff.

In addition, thank you to Crewe Honda Centre who donated £250 when visiting the College. Furthermore three students from equine put on a great social and managed to raise £340.05. Thanks also to The Studio, who donated a huge sum of £750. A massive thanks to the Foundation Department who managed to raise £84.41, also to the Food Department who have put on various events throughout the year so far, such as a coffee morning and cake sales, raising a fantastic £243.

Additionally this year we have donated £500 to the Ryan Lee Trust. We were proud to support such a brilliant and worthwhile charity. In October, we also assisted the Royal British Legion with their poppy appeal at Crewe train station, collaboratively raising over £3000.

So far this has been a very successful year for RAG so thank you to all students and staff who have given up their time and helped to support us by giving donations. We look forward to planning the fun filled week of events for RAG week and the RAG ball. We hope to see the continued enthusiasm and urge you to carry on planning and running your own events as we appreciate every penny that is raised.

Please don’t forget to get your RAG ball tickets early to avoid disappointment and RAG t-shirts are on sale so get them before they’re gone!

How long does it take the average college student to get a job?It can generally take several months to land your first job, so be prepared not to find a position overnight.

How long do most recent college students plan to stay in their first job?60% of college students plan to stay in their first job for two years or less. If you’re an average college student, it’s highly unlikely that your first employer will be you last.

While it’s commendable to look for an employer you’ll want to remain with for a long time, it’s okay to make a decision based on where you want to be for the next few years only.

How many jobs will the average person have in his or her lifetime?The average worker currently holds ten different jobs before age forty, and this number is projected to grow.

Forrester Research predicts that today’s youngest workers, that’s you, will hold twelve to fifteen jobs in their lifetime. But don’t panic you won’t hold so many different jobs that you have to go through the whole job search process every year or two!

When you’re starting out in the workplace, it may seem that everyone is getting a job faster than you. Well, it’s time for a reality check.

The truth is that over a million people graduate from college each year, so I promise that whatever your situation, lots and lots of other people are right there with you.

Reaseheath College Gym

The gym will cost £15 to join from after Easter until the end of June for students.

The opening hours are as follows:

Monday, Tuesday and Friday 12-2pm and 4.30pm - 7.45pm

Wednesday and Thursday 12pm - 7.45pm

Men’s rugby teamThese have made a big improvement this year with the developing link between Reaseheath College and Crewe and Nantwich Vagrants rugby team.

The Reaseheath Rangers have won the Northern Counties league, which is played against other land-based colleges and they hope they can remain undefeated by winning their final game at Myerscough College on Wednesday 22nd April 2015.

They have also progressed well in the Association of Colleges (AoC) Sport league and they will finish in the top half of the table. Overall a fantastic 2014-15 season.

Men’s recreational football teamThis team caters for students aged 19+ and they are also undefeated in the Northern Counties league.

The team hope to keep it this way when they play against Myerscough in the last game of the season where if they avoid defeat they will be crowned champions.

Women’s football team The team have played well this year and they should finish the season mid table in their AoC league. The team have played against some very strong opposition so a mid-table finish is a fantastic result for them.

Men’s football team The team have faced some very strong opposition this year in their AoC league but have shown developments since the new year. It is hoped the team can build on performances from this year and look forward to the 2015-16 season.

Other sports activities This year has seen a wide range of sports activities offered here at Reaseheath College. Jujitsu has gone from strength to strength with some real success stories this year and fantastic attendance. Climbing has also been very popular with over 20 attending the sessions regularly and Zumba has also seen good attendances. Rush Hockey, badminton, football, netball and multi-sports have also been offered this year with good attendances.

Reaseheath SocietiesFormingReaseheath Mammal SocietyRecently, students and staff from both the countryside and animal management departments have created this college group to spend time studying and recording mammals on the college grounds. Sightings are sent to the record centre for Cheshire and past records from this centre have been used by the Cheshire Mammal Group to create the first mammal atlas for the county, published in 2008 (which you can find in the library). Online updates are ongoing to encourage further recording.

So far we have confirmed an otter family as well as a polecat in the area, with trailcams tracking various predators by identifying footprints and droppings. We have gained

experience with Longworth traps to survey the smaller mammals and recorded live sightings of hedgehogs and raised awareness of them with through our Facebook page. Further surveys are planned and where possible we hope to improve the campus with practical conservation for key species.

Keeping an eye out for priority species on our behalf would be greatly appreciated - these include hedgehogs, polecats, otters, harvest mice and brown hares. Get in touch if you see any, though other records are welcome too!

Reaseheath SocietiesBird SocietyReaseheath College has a wide range of societies including, the Mammal Society, Reaseheath Herpetological and Entomological Society (RHES) and the Conservation Society. There is nothing to do with birds so we felt it was time to create Reaseheath Bird Society.

Reaseheath Bird Society was formed to study species of birds at Reaseheath College and on the river Weaver in Nantwich and record sightings onto the Bird Society Facebook group.

With the records we aim to:

- Look at the presence of bird species at Reaseheath and the surrounding areas, including the river Weaver

- Create a database of bird sightings to look at species and their changes over time

- Record all sightings on rECOrd for future reference

- Look at the habitat and make changes to help the species of birds at Reaseheath and preserve species for future years (as many species of bird are rapidly declining)

- To create an awareness of bird conservation both locally and globally

Since January the group and the members have recorded 52 species! If you have any sightings of birds join our Facebook group and record them.
