The Editor

Editor’s NoteDear Readers,

We live in an age where we have embraced technological advancements from time to time as they constantly evolve. In addition to personal consumer gadgets like mobile phones, portable music players, home appliances and home entertainment systems, professional equipment have also gone through revisions to emerge as highly sought-after necessities. Scaling down, I’d like to focus on one of the consumer sectors involved in the AV industry.

An interesting observation made some time ago was that the Houses of Worship segment saw a notable development in the AV sector. The face of Worship - for example, Christian worship - is changing, even though having audio and lighting system installations is common in most places. AV professionals continue to actively keep up with the evolution of specialized audio-visual systems so that these can be implemented in worship venues and mega events. Their needs for state-of-the-art acoustics, illumination, and visual displays are getting more and more distinct. Every House of Worship needs quality AV systems to efficiently preach to their congregation; right from the Preacher, to the choir, to the ministries, and to the worshippers.

In this issue’s Cover Story, you can read about this year’s Passion Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. The four-day mega worship event is proof that music and visual effects are essential elements in worship. I’d like to thank Elation Professional for sharing this fascinating story, all for our reading pleasure.

Adios Amigos!

OPUS – GERMAN STAGE AWARD 2013 GOES TO MATT FINKE AND SVEN SÖREN BEYER

Presented dur ing the Prol ight + Sound Frankfurt show on Apr i l 10 th is year, the Opus – German

Stage Award was given to two people: L ight ing and v ideo designer Matt F inke has been s ingled out for the ‘Jury Award’, whi le stage director Sven Sören Beyer was chosen for an Opus in the ‘Technical Real isat ion’ category for h is product ion of the opera ‘Neither’ in Dresden.

The combinat ion of the creat ive use of new technical faci l i t ies with imaginat iveness guarantees innovat ive events, insta l lat ions and happenings. The winners of th is year’s Opus awards make great use of the technical possibi l i t ies open to them. When combined with c lassic product ion techniques, the result is impressive and innovat ive events. Nevertheless, the two winners work in di fferent sectors. Matt F inke focuses mainly on corporate events and product presentat ions, whi le the emphasis of Sven Sören Beyer’s work is on art ist ic product ions in theatres, gal ler ies and opera houses.

Jury Award of the Opus-German Stage Award

Light and v ideo designer Matt Finke was honoured with the ‘Jury Award’ of the Opus – German Stage Award, for h is many years of work character ised by innovat ive and impressive insta l lat ions for large-scale events, concerts and product presentat ions. The focus of h is work is on v isual design using l ight ing and v ideo systems. Over recent years, he has given remarkable demonstrat ions of the possibi l i t ies of man machine /object interact ion, e.g., for the launch of the Audio Q3. In numerous projects, he has used mot ion-tracking technology that enables a person to interact ive ly inf luence the sett ing or LED screens v ia movements - a method that sets standards from the in i t ia l idea to implementat ion.

This year, Sven Sören Beyer was selected for the Opus in the Technical Real isat ion category for h is product ion of the opera ‘Neither’ in 2012. Together with h is ‘phase7’ art ists’ network, the stage director created an opera product ion that presents ‘Neither’ , the ‘ant i-opera’ by Morton Feldman based on a poem by Samuel Beckett , in a completely new l ight and sound sett ing. In th is product ion, Beyer used the IOSONO wave-f ie ld synthesis system for the sound and created a three-dimensional acoust ic environment in which the sound i tsel f becomes a spat ia l actor. In the jury’s opin ion, the combinat ion of innovat ive l ight and sound technology used in th is opera product ion set new standards.

The Opus – German Stage Award is g iven for new, outstanding, and creat ive ideas for the use of technology, by a jury of experts f rom the industry, t rade associat ions and Messe Frankfurt , as wel l as journal ists f rom leading trade publ icat ions. The honorary award is sponsored by the Professional L ight ing & Sound Associat ion of Germany (Verband für L icht-, Ton- und Veranstal tungstechnik - VPLT), the European Associat ion of Event Centers (Europäischer Verband der Veranstal tungs-Centren - EVVC) and Messe Frankfurt GmbH.

Luc Peumans from Genk, Belgium-based creat ive v isual design pract ice, Paint ing With Light

(PWL), designed the l ight ing and set for the recent Dutch and Belgian tour ing vers ion of ‘So You Think You Can Dance’, working for producers Albert Ver l inde Enterta inment. Peumans worked closely on the l ight ing design with PWL’s Dimi Theuwissen, who was Execut ive Light ing Designer for th is project. They referenced the basic l ight ing and set design to the hi t TV programme, recorded at the Crown Business Studios (CBS) in Aalsmeer, The Nether lands and noted for being a l i t t le bi t d i fferent f rom the average gl i tzy bal l room repl ica sett ing.

Keeping some essent ia l e lements of dancehal l-l ike sta i rcases and double-decking stage set, th is design adds a f lour ish of proto industr ia l ism with the incorporat ion of two large factory sty le fans, lots of metalwork and some innovat ive l ight ing ‘pract icals’ . I t is the fourth successive year that Paint ing With Light has been involved in l ight ing and set design for the Belgian/Dutch tour.

The pr incipal l ight ing k i t comprised 26 Mart in MAC Auras, 18 MAC Vipers and 18 Clay Paky Alpha Beam 300s for the moving l ights, a l l located on overhead trusses. There were a lso 18 ETC Source Four prof i les for key l ight ing and specia ls, p lus some 2K fresnels, with 24 LEDPARs dotted around, used for l ight ing the stage, set and the main fan at the back. 25 Act ive Sunstr ips were incorporated into the sta i r f ronts, and f ive str ik ing large industr ia l pendant l ights were f lown from above. Two Robert Jul iat Aramis 2.5K fo l lowspots were posit ioned out f ront.

Graphics for the two 65- inch plasma screens - on which each couples’ names were displayed as they took to the stage - were stored on a Coolux Pandora’s Box media server suppl ied to the product ion by Paint ing With Light, which was tr iggered from the grandMA2 l ight ing console - programmed and operated by PWL’s Nie ls Huybrechts.

The tour’s product ion manager was Lykle Hemminga and i t was produced by Brenda Vant Veer. The l ight ing equipment was del ivered by Bemmel l Nether lands based Rent-Al l .

ROBERT JULIAT TIBO RANGE RECEIVES ETOILE DU SIEL AWARD IN PARIS

French l ight ing manufacturer Robert Jul iat has been awarded an “Etoi le du SIEL” at the SIEL

show in Par is th is year for i ts new TIBO range of luminaires.

“The TIBO fami ly, which began with our TIBO LED prof i le at PLASA 2012, has now expanded with the arr iva l of some new addit ions! We can now present a comprehensive range of modular f ixtures that provides a complete solut ion to any l ight ing need,” said Robert Jul iat CEO, François Jul iat .

With T ibo, Robert Jul iat has introduced the idea of Creat ive Concept L ight in which, l ike the notes in a symphony, the designer is offered a ‘mix and match’ choice of l ight source (LED, tungsten halogen or discharge), lens type (Fresnel or prof i le ) and dramat ic or convent ional body colours. Designers can choose from this wide select ion to compose endless l ight ing solut ions to sui t any appl icat ion, whether i t is for theatre, architecture, d isplay or reta i l purposes.

The new addit ions to the range include two new prof i les with opt ions for HID discharge or var iable white LED l ight sources, and a Fresnel vers ion avai lable with the fu l l range of tungsten halogen, discharge or LED sources.

Also present on the Robert Jul iat stand was a prototype of the new ZEP 150W LED Fresnel . Based on the ZEP prof i le technology, i ts 150W LED engine is avai lable in two colour temperatures (3200K and 6000K) and complements the ZEP 640 prof i le ser ies. I ts large 200mm lens maximises l ight output, whi le i ts 360° rotat ing barn doors, low energy consumption and low maintenance requirements

Robert Jul iat chose the SIEL show to announce two new distr ibutorships with in France for Niethammer and Laser Imagineer ing.

“Niethammer manufactures very h igh qual i ty prof i le f ixtures, including a s i lent, non-fan cooled 2kW prof i le that complements the Robert Jul iat range of theatre prof i les,” said RJ’s Sales Director, Claus Spreyer. “Laser Imagineer ing offers exter ior LED l ight ing solut ions, including the Fr isbee, Sunbeam and C-LED wash l ights. These have very f ine dimming, even at low levels, and wi l l complement Robert Jul iat ’s ranges wel l . Both manufacturers wi l l benef i t f rom the Robert Jul iat network of partners across the country and we are very enthusiast ic about th is new partnership.”

“This is an excit ing new era for Robert Jul iat , which celebrated i ts 90th anniversary only two years ago,” concludes François Jul iat . “We have new personnel , new products and a new concept in l ight ing, which proves that Robert Jul iat is st i l l leading the f ie ld. We bel ieve our Creat ive Concept L ight del ivers a new concept to l ight ing professionals and are proud to be the only manufacturer who can supply a s ingle range of f ixtures to cover so many solut ions.”

FIRST ROBE WAShBEAMS ON TOUR IN UK FOR STRICTLY LIVE TOUR

The f i rst Robe ROBIN MMX WashBeams f ixtures to tour the UK went out on ‘Str ict ly Come Dancing

– The Live Tour’ , which played a month of UK arenas fo l lowing the latest of the BBC’s hugely popular h i t TV ser ies. The gl i t ter ing 2013 tour l ine up included re igning Str ict ly champion and Olympic gymnast, Louis Smith, dancing with Ola Jordan.

Light ing was designed by Richard G Jones, who was asked on-board by Show Director (and Judge) Craig Revel Horwood last year. The two have worked together on several musicals, and Revel Horwood’s br ief to Richard was: “Three words dah- l ing – Theatr ical , Theatr ical and THE-A-TRI-CAL!! !” .

Jones ensured that no-one was disappointed, creat ing a show awash with colour, movement, drama and pizzazz to match al l the dancef loor act ion, energy and high j inks!

Al l l ight ing, sound and r igging equipment was suppl ied by South Wales-based rental and product ion company, Sonalyst.

The 14 x MMX WashBeams together with 23 x Robe ROBIN MMX Spots are newly purchased by Sonalyst for their h i re stock – which now contains gett ing on for 300 moving l ights.

There were over 100 other Robes on the Str ict ly L ive tour ing r ig, including 30 x ColorSpot 2500E ATs, 56 x ColorWash 2500E ATs and 28 s i lver ColorBeam 700E ATs, located around the per imeter of the 40 x 20 metre dancef loor. Al l the MMX units were r igged on the two arched trusses over the stage that fo l lowed the l ine of the two curved LED video borders and on a stra ight t russ direct ly upstage of the judge’s desk.

These were used for way-cool aer ia l effects and producing eye-candy out over the dancef loor as wel l as looking fabulous on the IMAG cameras dotted around the dancef loor.

The gobo wheel was f i t ted with Robe’s In-Air Ki t , a set of gobos specia l ly designed for producing stunning aer ia l effects. These gave “Fabulous, very punchy and incredibly br ight images that h i t the spot for th is type of show,” declared Jones.

The MMX WashBeams were pr imar i ly ut i l ised for ‘dressing’ the band onstage, and i l luminat ing the set areas, plus back- l ight ing the judges. The f ixtures were a l l f i t ted with the Fresnel lens opt ion. Apart f rom being very impressed by the br ightness of both the MMX Spots and WashBeams, and th inks the zoom on both f ixtures is “ fantast ic”. I t enabled him to ‘spot down’ a wash unit so t ight ly that they could be used as high backl ights on the s ingers dur ing the show’s spectacular opening product ion number. “This was amazing” he enthused, “Giv ing a very di fferent look in the a i r” .

He loved the internal rotatable ‘barn door’ b lades in the WashBeams. “Excel lent,” he says expla in ing that being able to rotate them 180 degrees was “Perfect for keeping the look and the ai r effects real ly t idy”. The intensi ty of the MMX Spots combined with using the In-Air Ki t gobos made them a “Great hard-working product for the show, ” he concluded.

The str ict ly L ive 2013 show was programmed by Alex Murphy and Chr is Hirst onto a grandMA2 fu l l s ize dur ing a week of product ion rehearsals at the NIA Arena in Birmingham, and th is was operated on the road by Mike Rothwel l .

ETC Selador LEDs provided the house l ighting for Amsterdam’s new Ziggo Dome.

ETC SELADOR LED BRINGS STUNNING hOUSE LIGhTING TO AMSTERDAM’S ZIGGO DOME

The Nether lands’ brand new mult i -use indoor arena Ziggo Dome has been f i t ted out with over

400 ETC Selador LED f ixtures, in a bid to make i ts house l ight ing among the best – and greenest – anywhere.

Tradit ional ly, arena house l ight ing has been harsh, using unpleasant sodium or f luorescent f ixtures, which do l i t t le to ref lect the stunning l ight ing often found on stage. But with 80 ETC Selador Desire Lustr+ LED f ixtures above the main arena, and 370 ETC Selador Classic V iv id-R LED f ixtures in the surrounding corr idors and foyer areas, the Ziggo Dome is very di fferent.

Named after Dutch communicat ions company Ziggo, the 17,000 seat venue in Amsterdam hosts a range of di fferent types of events, f rom Peter Pan, Rihanna and Mumford & Sons, to the music f rom the BBC’s nature documentary Frozen Planet, the MTV European Music Awards and Top Gear L ive.

More Than Just Stage LightingZiggo Dome’s faci l i t ies manager Ruud Bongers said, “We were keen to include a l ight ing scheme which extended from simply on stage to the whole arena, making the house l ights part of the show l ights. At the touch of a button, we can make the house l ight ing change colour, br ighten or dim; and i t can al l be done from one of n ine touch panels located around the bui ld ing.”

One of the major issues when planning such dynamic house l ight ing as th is, was ensur ing that not only does the venue look good, but that i t remains pract ical : guests need to be able to see their way to the seats and read their t ickets, whi le mainta in ing a comfortable level of l ight. “We did a lot of test ing,” said Bongers, “to make sure that everything looked r ight – and that the LEDs mainta ined a pleasant skin tone. Selador has some beaut i fu l colour choices.”

ETC’s x7 Color System was designed for use in theatre and broadcast product ions, where accurate skin tone is v i ta l .

Unison Mosaic ControlThe system is control led by ETC Unison Mosaic, with the Tessera touch panels located around the bui ld ing, so that author ised staff can adjust the l ight ing in their area. The advanced power of Mosaic was necessary for i ts abi l i ty to supply an sACN signal to the ETC Gateways – which would then send DMX to the f ixtures – without extra processing. “ In the corr idor which ci rc les the bui ld ing, where bars are located,” said Bongers, “we can have mood l ight ing which ref lects the show. But we can also adjust i t to ref lect or affect the mood of the crowd: i f people are gett ing a l i t t le rowdy, we can adjust the l ight ing to something a bi t calmer.”

bui ld ing. Said Product ion Manager Rick Liesveld, “When a band comes on, you’d want the l ight ing to fade out. Mosaic can do more than just a s imple 20-second fade: i t can start f rom one end of the hal l , and s lowly move towards the other end. We cal l i t ‘ the blanket’ . I t ’s amazing to hear the noise of the audience die out not as one as you’d expect, but s lowly, gradual ly, f rom one end, as people real ise the show’s about to start .

“Simi lar ly, at the end of the show, rather than have al l the l ight ing come on at once, we can have the l ight ing come up in the VIP areas f i rst , fo l lowed by the rest of the audience. The l ight ing is far more interest ing and dynamic.”

A second main panel at the bui ld ing’s recept ion al lows the l ight ing to be set up in the correct state before an event and switched off when leaving at n ight.

Programming the SystemETC’s f ie ld serv ice engineer Tom McGuire was in charge of programming the system for Ziggo Dome. He expla ined, “We were keen to keep th ings s imple, so we programmed each touch screen button to perform one task, such as turning l ights on or off . The way Mosaic works makes th is very s imple compared to a programming using a l ight ing control desk, because one touch can perform mult ip le steps without the need for macros.

“More compl icated programming came with the control for the main arena, which needed to be able to not only just switch al l the l ights in the arena, but a lso be able to turn speci f ic areas off when i t wasn’t required.

“The f ixtures are being run from nine Tessera control lers (with a tenth as an interface), but the house l ight ing is spread over 12 universes, meaning that there is spare capacity on each of the

control lers – so there’s plenty of extra space, should the arena’s technical staff ever decide to expand the system.”

Custom ConnectorsETC’s Dutch dealer L ightco was responsible for the insta l lat ion. Project Manager Bas van Schelven said, “We spent a long t ime with Ziggo Dome’s technical managers to ensure they got the r ight product, including sett ing up range of products in the venue for a shootout. The managers needed something with the r ight amount of v ibrancy, and which would cover the area they needed: each one needed to cover a 6m x 6m square.

“Having establ ished Selador was the best product for their needs, we tested DMX over Cat5 cable to make sure i t would work wel l and got ETC to f i t RJ45 cable connectors on the back of each f ixture, instead of the standard XLRs. Whi le th is wouldn’t make much of a di fference f inancia l ly to most insta l lat ions, for a project of th is s ize, just the smal l d i fference in cable cost ended up providing a big saving overal l . I t was a highly complex e lectr ical system, and, as is often the case with work of th is type, we had a very t ight t ime frame to get i t a l l insta l led and commissioned between bui ld ing handover and the f i rst show. We managed to get the ent i re house l ight ing system up and running in the space of two weeks.”

Liesveld concluded, “Despite the s ize of the arena, the house l ight ing makes i t feel t ru ly int imate. We have the presets of the Mosaic system, or the l ight ing control desk operator can interact with the system – their sk i l ls are the l imit !”

ETC AND VARI*LITE SADDLE UP FOR WAR hORSE

War Horse, the now legendary World War I drama depict ing the devot ion of a boy to his horse,

has moved stage audiences in the UK and US, winning f ive 2011 Tony Awards. One of the most str ik ing elements of the show is i ts h ighly evocat ive l ight ing design by Paule Constable who cal ls l ight ing ‘The secret language of Theatre’. Paule won the 2011 Tony Award for Best Design for A Play for her design work on War Horse.

Austra l ia now has the chance to exper ience th is landmark theatre event with audiences packing Melbourne’s Arts Centre State Theatre n ight after n ight. The show moved to Sydney in March, and wi l l be in Br isbane in July.

Small Amount of Lights with Big EffectsThe l ight ing r ig, suppl ied by Chameleon Tour ing Systems, has only a smal l amount of moving l ights; a couple of Var i-L i te 3500 Washes, s ix Var i-L i te 3000Q Washes, three VL500 Arcs and 12 ETC Revolut ions.

“The VL3000 and VL3500 washes with their d ischarge lamps cut through the large convent ional tungsten washes real ly wel l ,” commented Richard Pacholski , Austra l ian Associate Light ing Designer. “They real ly make a statement in certa in scenes as the show is very tungsten dominated with a lot of PAR cans and 5K fresnels. They real ly come into their own dur ing Act I I , which is the war zone, generat ing great effects to accompany the sounds and act ion on stage. The VL500’s are used in a fa i r ly t ight beam si tuat ion, again cutt ing through the tungsten looks.”

Richard reports that Paule is a big fan of the ETC Revolut ion and that they are used in War Horse more l ike a typical moving l ight. The major i ty of the Revolut ions are r igged front of house from where they can keyl ight, p icking up act ion and people.

The largely convent ional r ig includes 60 ETC Source Four prof i les and forty ETC Source Four PARs as wel l as 200 PAR cans. ETC Source Four El l ipsoidal 10° f ixtures run as f ront of house fo l low spots f rom the box boom posit ion re inforcing the tungsten look.

Control For contro l , an ETC Eos 8000 channel console wi th an RPU and a separate ETC Gio console was used to program the pro ject ion; a l l of which is now merged together to run off the one console wi th a RPU back-up.

“The Eos and i ts networking abi l i ty has been fantast ic,” remarked Richard. “ I t ’s n ice working with a complete system with everything ta lk ing to each other. What is real ly interest ing is that we use an ETC I/O gateway for each fo l lowspot, which means the Eos caps the output level of what the fo l lowspot operator is doing yet a l lows the operator to st i l l d im up and down - they just can’t go past the maximum that we set in a cue.”

Blake Garner, who programmed the Austra l ian vers ion of War Horse, is a veteran ETC EOS operator who descr ibes the War Horse set up as a good test of the matur i ty of the networking capabi l i t ies of the plat form.

“The RPU is the brain of the system - running as the master - whi le the Eos console is the redundant backup and physical surface for programming and running the show,” he expla ined. “So the Eos and RPU were running together to have a fu l ly redundant system, and then into that system, we also had the Gio console which was being used for the v ideo work. We also had three Remote V ideo Interfaces networked into the system. These are used for independent readouts for the l ight ing designer, associate LD and v ideo designer. “

Al l DMX data is sent through an Ethernet system with Streaming ACN used for a l l l ight ing data and Artnet for the v ideo content that goes through a Catalyst media server.

There is a lso a Show Control gateway, with a lot of MIDI data coming from the sound system tr igger ing sound and l ight ing effects.

From a networking point of v iew, there are s ix users: the unmanned pr imary processor, Blake on a console, the v ideo programmer on a console, and the three RVI’s - a l l operat ing independent ly as required whi lst shar ing the same show f i le.

“So we had s ix users dur ing the programming

per iods, but once we were done, we didn’t have to do anything to the show f i le to consol idate everything down to the one surface for one operator,” added Blake. “ I t ’s a great networking system that I bel ieve could handle anything you throw at i t . I t was also very easy to set up - just a matter of sett ing the basic networking sett ings on the consoles, going through sett ing a di fferent user on each console and we were done. “

Blake descr ibes the ETC Eos as a very theatr ical console ideal for War Horse, further comment ing that the structure and the way i t phrases the l ights is very natural to l ight ing designers in the theatre environment.

“You don’t have to try t ranslate what they want into the way the console th inks as the two are one and the same,” he said. “There have been many t imes when I ’ve real ised a lot of thought has been put into var ious opt ions offered by the Eos. At the f i rst g lance, i t doesn’t a lways seem to be what I want, but once you start doing more complex th ings, you real ise that is the r ight way to do i t , and i t a l l starts coming together n icely.”

RECORDING ThE UNIQUE FILM SOUND OFLES MISERABLES WITh DPA

DPA Microphones played an integral part in recording the audio for the f i lm vers ion of the hi t

musical Les Miserables, which features an al l -star cast, including Hugh Jackman, Russel l Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Samantha Barks and Sacha Baron Cohen.

Nominated for n ine BAFTA Awards, including one for Sound, Les Miserables used an innovat ive technique that involved recording vocals l ive on set with the cast s inging to a l ive piano accompaniment played to them through earpieces. The orchestra was recorded later in post-product ion, with the music ians taking their lead from the performances of the cast.

This break with tradit ion enabled the director Tom Hooper to create a tru ly emot ive exper ience for audiences watching the f i lm. Product ion Sound Mixer Simon Hayes, who was responsible for captur ing the f i lm’s ent i re audio content, says i t was a tru ly unique way of working and one that would not have been possible without except ional microphones, in part icular DPA 4071 laval ier microphones.

”When judging di fferent laval iers I had always considered the di fferences in sound between var ious brands of laval ier to be a matter of taste rather than a c lear cut s i tuat ion of one brand being super ior,” Hayes says. ”That was unt i l I l istened to a DPA up against the compet i t ion. In my opin ion, the DPA is better, more open sounding, less chesty and sounds more l ike a boom mic than any other laval iers I have heard.”

Hayes had 50 DPA 4071 laval ier microphones at h is disposal dur ing the f i lming of Les Miserables,

a l l of which were suppl ied by Richmond Fi lms in conjunct ion with DPA’s UK distr ibutor Sound Network.

“Normal ly when I am recording a f i lm, I pr ior i t ise boom mics, especia l ly i f the scene is being shot with a s ingle camera. But with Les Miserables, Tom wanted al l the angles covered from al l s ides to capture the perfect performance. This meant we couldn’t re ly so heavi ly on the booms because the wider-angle coverage would stop them gett ing close enough. Our solut ion was to come at the recording from a di fferent angle and make laval ier microphones our pr ior i ty.”

Abbey Road engineers checked the sound qual i ty of the DPA 4071 laval iers to make sure they were the best choice for vocals. Hayes says they were impressed with the results.

“We tested var ious models and found the DPAs were c lear ly the best. In fact nothing else came close. The sound qual i ty, f requency response and dynamic range were easi ly good enough to master and they were able to handle very h igh SPL levels f rom vocals without sounding harsh as they approach their maximum SPL. I have never heard a vocal make them square off , yet such is their dynamic range and sensit iv i ty that they can fa i thfu l ly reproduce even the smal lest ‘breathed’ vocal .”

W ith Abbey Road happy with h is choice of laval ier, Simon Hayes’ next task was f inding a way of using them that gave the best sound but st i l l a l lowed them to remain inv is ib le to audiences.

When Chaminade High School for Boys opened i ts doors in 1952, i t was housed in a converted

Since then, the school (now co-ed and known as Chaminade Col lege Preparatory School ) has expanded to include middle and high schools on two campuses in the Los Angeles suburbs of Chatsworth and West Hi l ls . The school’s notable a lumni include Academy Award-winning cinematographer John Longnecker, keyboardist David Paich, and comedian Gal lagher.

The Chatsworth campus hosts the high school, which has recent ly added the Tutor Fami ly Center for the Performing Arts, a h igh tech 600-seat auditor ium and performance space equipped with distr ibuted v ideo in the lobby areas, and a fu l l theatr ical sound re inforcement system, featur ing Renkus-Heinz Iconyx dig i ta l ly steered loudspeaker arrays.

The system employs two Iconyx ICLive DUAL columns, ut i l iz ing tr ip le HF coaxia l t ransducers, one on each s ide of the stage. As Art Rautenberg of JK Design Group in nearby North Hi l ls , Cal i fornia expla ined, the Iconyx columns were selected both for their control and their form factor.

“The s ide wal ls are a l l br ick, and room is pretty ref lect ive, and we were concerned about the acoust ics,” said Rautenberg. “The Iconyx enabled us to steer the sound and direct i t away from the wal ls and ref lect ive surfaces and into the seat ing area.”

The Iconyx columns’ s l im prof i le was an ideal f i t for the space as wel l , Rautenberg observes. “The architect had lef t us very l i t t le space to mount the loudspeakers,” he said. “We basical ly had a smal l

Le Miserables took 15 weeks to shoot and an addit ional seven weeks were spent rehears ing with a l l the actors miked up so that the audio could be sent to Abbey Road for feedback. Simon Hayes said he is del ighted with the sound and bel ieves what was achieved wouldn’t have been possible without the DPA laval iers.

“They are the only laval iers that could cope with what we were try ing to do,” he said. “Apart f rom their except ional audio qual i ty and dynamic range, they were a lso incredibly durable and gave us no problems, not even when we got them soaking wet dur ing the scenes we shot in the ra in. We simply swapped them around and dr ied them out with a hair dr ier before using them for the next take.”

“Normal ly I record dia logue, not music, so th is was a very di fferent k ind of project for me, but I absolute ly loved i t . Lots of people thought what we did wouldn’t be possible, but we pul led i t off and I am very proud of what we achieved,” said Hayes.

FUNKTION-ONE IN ThE hOUSE!

Funktion-One has made history by becoming the f i rst loudspeaker manufacturer to supply sound

for a house music event in the Houses of Par l iament.

On March 6 th is year, a very specia l music event was staged at the centre of Br i t ish pol i t ics - the Houses of Par l iament - as the ‘House the House’ compet i t ion reached i ts spectacular conclusion. Organised by the char i ty, ‘Last Night A DJ Saved My Li fe’ (LNADJ), the two-and-a-hal f hour musical extravaganza (seen in picture) saw a ser ies of inspir ing musical performances, including a set by DJ superstar Fatboy Sl im.

Headl in ing the bi l l was ‘House the House’ winner Bryce Fury, who won the Final at Ministry of Sound in February. As the compet i t ion’s winner, he snagged a stunning f i rst-pr ize package, which also included a fu l ly paid Audio Product ion Degree Scholarship at SAE Inst i tute worth £20,000, a set at ‘We Love Space’ in Ib iza and a haul of Vestax DJ k i t .

LNADJ was formed by two musical v is ionar ies, Jonny Lee and Ian Kennedy, a lmost three years ago. Their mission is to unite the global dance music community, in order to ra ise awareness and v i ta l funding for environmental and humanitar ian causes. In i t iat ives l ike the Ib iza Heart Project are doing just that. Last summer, i t ra ised €31,000 for good causes through a €5 guest l ist donat ion at We Love’s 17 events on Sunday at Space.

Dur ing Jonny’s chance meet ing with Mike Weather ley MP, who hosts the ‘Rock the House’ compet i t ion, the pair d iscussed the idea of doing something s imi lar with more of a dance music axis. They came up with ‘House the House’ - a DJ compet i t ion a imed at reunit ing young people with their communit ies. LNADJ’s team, headed by Jonny and including Creat ive Director J im McNulty and Strategist James Holdsworth, set about turning the idea into real i ty.

Funkt ion-One has supported LNADJ since i ts incept ion. And with ‘House the House’, the company, i ts partners, as wel l as Tony and Ann Andrews were on hand every step of the way.

Upholding the foundat ion’s ethos of ‘uni ty, community and ser ious fun’, the compet i t ion inv i ted

young DJs from al l over the UK to submit 30-minute mixes through Mixcloud. As wel l as being judged on their musical capabi l i t ies, each entrant was required to donate t ime to a community organisat ion in their area, in order to meet the qual i fy ing cr i ter ia.

The compet i t ion k icked off with an opening party at The Vinyl Factory in London, which was headl ined by legendary DJ, Danny Rampl ing. Funkt ion-One partner, Project Audio, suppl ied a system bef i t t ing the occasion.

The 10 Regional Heats were held at some of the country’s most respected clubs, including a host of Tokyo Industr ies venues, l ike Digi ta l in Newcast le and in Br ighton, and FAC 251 in Manchester. Mint in Leeds and Corsica Studios in London also played host to the compet i t ion’s young DJ ta lent. These venues share a common attr ibute; each of them is insta l led with a Funkt ion-One sound system.

When a system had to be brought in, l ike at Br istol ’s The Stat ion, Funkt ion-One partners l ike Audio Funkt ion were on hand to supply i t .

Young DJs, some play ing their f i rst ever g ig, were given the opportunity to do what they love in the coolest venues and through the best sound systems.

At the Final , held at London’s Ministry of Sound, Tony Andrews was inv i ted to jo in the panel of judges, which also included DJ Trevor Fung, Darren Hughes and DJ Cal lum from We Love Space, and Réjane Magloire - who sang the or ig inal Last Night a DJ Saved My Li fe with her group In Deep. The winner, Bryce Fury, had come through his Regional Heat at Digi ta l in Newcast le. Next, he would be performing at the Houses of Par l iament, supported by Fatboy Sl im.

Project Audio stepped up to support the event with equipment and crew for the Houses of Par l iament show. I t is support l ike th is, which al lows the foundat ion to do the incredible th ings i t does. The set-up included two white Funkt ion-One Resolut ion 2 speakers, a Funkt ion-One BR218 bass ref lex enclosure and Funkt ion-One F101 speakers for DJ monitor ing. The system was powered with Ful l Fat Audio ampl i f icat ion and control led using XTA processing.

Project Audio a lso suppl ied Pioneer DJ equipment, a Midas mix ing console, as wel l as l ight ing k i t f rom manufacturers l ike Mart in Professional , Showtec and Avol i tes. Company Director, Cla i re Munnel ly, revealed that forward planning was essent ia l , “Due to the nature of the venue, we had to ensure that we were fu l ly compl iant with a l l regulat ions in advance of coming onsite. This, together with l imited vehic le access and str ict load in t imes, meant plenty of pre-event admin to ensure we fu l f i l led our obl igat ions for people, equipment, noise restr ict ions and vehic les coming onsite.”

Whi le being monumental in i ts own r ight, the gig held another s igni f icance. I t was staged on the 19th anniversary of the Cr iminal Just ice and Publ ic Order Act 1994, which was introduced to suppress the r ise of dance culture in the UK. Said Funkt ion-One’s Ann Andrews, “Last Night A DJ Saved My Li fe is c lose to our hearts and has been s ince Jonny and Ian started i t . We real ly bel ieve in what they do and enjoy support ing them.

“House the House was great fun to be a part of and i t gave us the opportunity to pass on some of our bel iefs - l ike the importance of top qual i ty sound and not using MP3s - to young people who are in the ear ly stages of their musical journeys. When audio integrator Mary land Sound Internat ional (MSI) was once again tasked

with supply ing the main audio system for President Barack Obama’s second president ia l inaugurat ion on January 21, 2013, the company employed two Optocore networks.

MSI, a long-t ime user of Optocore technology — a leading choice for power ing professional audio, v ideo and data transmission networks in a var iety of markets, including broadcast, post product ion and AV — chose the networks for their mult ip le levels of redundancy and reputat ion of super ior re l iabi l i ty. This marks the th i rd president ia l inaugurat ion in a row for which MSI has chosen Optocore equipment for the cr i t ical audio distr ibut ion.

With the ceremony taking place on the grounds of the Capito l in Washington, D.C. in January, MSI was faced with unpredictable winter condit ions as wel l as a long transmission path back to MSI’s f ront-of-house posit ion, near ly 2,000 feet f rom the last speaker tower. MSI and audio designer Patr ick

Baltzel l needed a way to distr ibute audio s ignals with as few convers ions as possible in order to ensure the approximately 1 mi l l ion attendees heard every word.

Ensuring a Transmission Without GlitchesMSI chose Optocore network technology in order to dr ive the s ignal chain direct ly f rom the Yamaha PM5D FOH mixing console, using Optocore YG2 Yamaha cards that were connected with redundant f ibre cabl ing to the locat ions of the loudspeaker processors and ampl i f iers. This provided MSI with lossless dig i ta l t ransmission, which is cr i t ica l in order to proper ly t ransport the audio with cr isp sound and clar i ty over such a long distance transmission path without any gl i tches.

“The Optocore networks we put in place for th is year’s ceremony certa in ly made access to a l l of the ampl i f iers, s ignal processors and overal l s ignal d istr ibut ion far easier and more re l iable than in the past,” says Br ian Bednar, system technic ian, MSI. “This t ime around, everything was more streaml ined and faster to set up and tear down at the end of the event.”

The NetworkThe main Optocore network consisted of a YG2 card in the Yamaha PM5D FOH mixing console connected to an Optocore DD32 networked AES/EBU device on stage r ight and another DD32 on stage lef t . Each DD32 was connected to an Optocore X6P-8/8 analogue converter and a Dolby DLP loudspeaker processor v ia AES. The X6P converters gave MSI the abi l i ty to feed al l the devices that were not AES and/or not dr iven through the Dolby processor units.

The second Optocore network consisted of a YG2 card in the PM5D connected to an Optocore DD32R-FX networked AES/EBU device at delay zone 1 (700 feet away) and another DD32R-FX at delay zone 2 (1500 feet away). Each DD32R-FX was connected to an Optocore X6P-16IN analogue converter and a Dolby processor v ia AES. Both networks featured redundant f ibre connect ions.

The DD32R-FX proved to be a helpfu l add-on for th is year’s sound system, with i ts bui l t- in network-wide Ethernet switch. The Optocore network a l lowed

SENNhEISER BRINGS UNMATChED SOUND QUALITY AND WIRELESS RELIABILITY TO DIVERSE PERFORMANCES AT ThE 55Th ANNUAL GRAMMY AWARDS

For wor ld-class recording art istes including Bruno Mars, St ing, Zac Brown, Miranda Lambert,

Al ic ia Keys and Ed Sheeran, Sennheiser was the microphone and wire less system of choice for th is year’s 55th Annual Grammy Awards event, held at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles on February 10. The evening’s te lecast, hosted for a second t ime by LL Cool J, drew 28.1 mi l l ion v iewers and showcased over 25 spectacular performances by a diverse range of art istes.

Sennheiser endorsee The Zac Brown Band and Adele, a lso a Sennheiser user, captured awards dur ing the evening: Zac Brown for “Best Country Album” (“Uncaged”) and Adele for “Best Pop Solo Performance” (“Set F i re to the Rain”) .

As in pr ior years, the art istes dedicat ions were among the most memorable moments of the evening, and th is year included moving tr ibutes to Bob Mar ley, Levon Helm, Dave Brubeck and others.

Bruno Mars led the tr ibute to Bob Mar ley before usher ing St ing, Rihanna, Damian Mar ley and Ziggy Mar ley to the stage for performances of “Locked Out of Heaven”, “Walk ing on the Moon”, and “Could You Be Loved”. Bruno Mars sang through a Sennheiser SKM 2000 transmitter, coupled with an MMD 945-1 super-cardio id capsule. St ing, meanwhi le, del ivered a powerfu l , fu l l - range vocal performance through a Sennheiser SKM 5200-I I t ransmitter with a Neumann KK 105 S super-cardio id capsule.

“Putt ing Bruno on the SKM 2000 transmitter and MMD 945-1 capsule combinat ion was a choice between me and Front of House,” expla ined James Berry, Monitor Engineer for Bruno Mars. “We did a shootout with a ton of mics and th is was def in i te ly the best choice for Bruno. This combinat ion real ly made his vocal sound fantast ic both for h is own IEMs and for Front of House.” Berry said he was running roughly 30 channels of Sennheiser wire less, for microphones as wel l as IEMs: “The 2000 ser ies

IEMs are rock sol id and they sound great. I ’ve been using them for many years now and i t ’s my go-to.”

Perhaps the most emot ional t r ibute of the evening was to Levon Helm, who passed away in Apr i l of 2012. An al l -star cast consist ing of Zac Brown, T-Bone Burnett , E l ton John, Mavis Staples, Mumford & Sons and Br i t tany Howard of Alabama Shakes performed an emot ional rendit ion of “The Weight”

MSI easy access to the Dolby DLP loudspeaker processors and ampl i f iers located off the main s i te. With a broad part of the sound system offs i te, i t was then easier to mainta in control and monitor ing of a l l the devices on the network to see i f they were funct ioning to MSI’s speci f icat ions.

“ I t is my role to help the FOH engineer tune the system, so having access to a l l parts of the system at a l l t imes in order to make changes without my needing to leave the FOH posit ion was invaluable,” says Art Isaacs, Project Manager, MSI. “The X6P-16IN converters gave us the funct ional i ty to run measurement microphones from mult ip le c i ty blocks away back to the FOH posit ion. Using the Optocore system proved i tsel f to us in many ways. The sound

system was extremely quiet due to the a l l -AES based dr ive system. Ethernet access to a l l of the onl ine devices proved extremely helpfu l and provided great f lex ib i l i ty. I can only hope that in 2017, we can cont inue to work with Optocore systems to further enhance the sound system.”

The re lat ionship between Optocore and MSI extends back almost a decade. “Optocore has been part of MSI’s rental inventory s ince 2004,” conf i rms T ine Helmle, Director, Optocore. “We are proud to provide MSI with the solut ions i t needed to ensure the audio was heard loud and clear dur ing such an important and histor ic U.S. event as the president ia l inaugurat ion. We look forward to working with them wel l into the future.”

with Zac Brown leading off, singing through a Sennheiser SKM 5200-II transmitter and MD 5235 capsule.

Ear l ier in the evening, audiences were treated to shimmering duet rendit ions of “Over You” and “Home” by Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bent ley, with Lambert s inging through her s ignature custom pink-fashioned Sennheiser SKM 2000 handheld and MMD 935-1 capsule. “Microphone choice is a team cal l between Jason (Macal ik, FOH for Miranda Lambert ) and me,” said Chr is Newsom, monitor engineer for Miranda Lambert. “You choose whatever microphone best complements the art iste’s voice, and the combinat ion of the SKM 2000 and MMD 935-1 works fantast ic for us. Miranda’s voice sounds real ly smooth, and that’s exact ly what we are looking for.” Newsom adds that h is team rel ies 100 percent on Sennheiser for both handheld transmitters and IEMs, with 12 stereo mixes of ew 300 G3 IEMs for in-ear monitor ing alongside EM 2050 receivers and s ix channels of SKM 2000 transmitters – each with MMD 935-1 capsules.

John Harr is has been the music mixer at the Grammys for 20 years and says that attaining outstanding audio has always been the focus. “This is the only show where al l my cl ients are music professionals, so there is nothing more important than the sound,” he says. “For both Bruno’s and Miranda’s performances, the sound of the mic jumped out at me and made me look up,” he recal led. “ In both cases, the mics [Sennheiser SKM 2000 with MMD 945-1 capsules] were real ly wel l matched to the performers and were ideal for the circumstances.”

Throughout the ent i re performance, Dave Bel lamy of Burbank, CA-based Soundtronics, who served as RF Coordinator and has no less than 15 Grammy events under h is bel t , re l ied on Sennheiser for wire less systems. “We used 18 channels of Sennheiser RF for the show, a l l top-of-the- l ine EM 3732-I I receivers,” he said. “We have been very happy with i t and i t has been sol id and re l iable – especia l ly as we have less and less spectrum and more RF devices to work with than ever before.” Bel lamy’s f i rm was responsible for the antenna system and seamless coordinat ion of a l l the RF frequencies for the show.

Many Sennheiser microphones were a lso featured across a var iety of backl ine instruments throughout the show. For example, no less than 20 Sennheiser e 935s were used for background vocals, 30 Sennheiser e 602 microphones for f loor toms and kick drums, 20 e 904s for rack toms and ten e 906s on var ious guitar cabinets. Music mixer John Harr is is a fan of the e 602 mic in part icular: “The e 602 design is fantast ic,” he e laborated. “You can put i t on a drum and i t a l ready does what I was going to do to i t – i t is great at impact, especia l ly at the bottom and top end.”

Harr is cont inues to receive impeccable support f rom Sennheiser, which is invaluable at a t ime when technology is moving so fast, “Sennheiser looks after their products wel l and having someone on the ground l ike their art iste rep T im Moore is spectacular. I get the feel ing that Sennheiser has a real pulse on their products and that the company is moving forward al l the t ime.”

MIND-BLOWING: “TRANSMISSION: ThE SPIRITUAL GATEWAY” WAS JOINED BY GRANDMA2

The O2 arena in the Czech Republic capital Prague once again welcomed thousands of electronic

dance music fans from all around the world for another “Transmission” show. Following the theme “The Spiritual Gateway”, each of the performing artistes had their own show that focused on an element of the spirituality of old religions and ancient ideas.

Lighting designer and programmer Bas Kemper worked with 2 grandMA2 ful l-size consoles and 1 MA NPU (Network Processing Unit) as well as 1 MA onPC command wing to control more than 240 moving l ights.

Kemper commented, “ In the past years, we have had a good exper ience with the grandMA ‘ser ies 1’ because of i ts excel lent networking capabi l i t ies, the easy setup and the personal isat ion of the desk with the potent ia l to pre-v isual ise the show using grandMA 3D. Now the grandMA2 makes th ings even more comfortable and enhances the performance a lot. We used the two consoles in Ful l -Tracking-Backup-Mode, but everything went smoothly, so once again there was no need for a back-up. The MA onPC command wing was my preferred pre-programming tool .”

“The s ize of the stage, 45 x 23 metres, was impressive. We had an area of over 1,000 square metres to f i l l up with l ight ing and LED screens. As wel l as the massive moving l ight presence, 340 square metres LED screens were insta l led. The result was spectacular and del ivered a phenomenal l ight show.”

The stage design and product ion was undertaken by United Music. Geoffrey Zehl and Mart i jn Deenen worked with Kemper on the l ight ing design and Deenen was also a second operator. Leo Van Gaal took care of the networking. T-Serv is suppl ied l ights, LEDs, and al l the stage elements. Ministry suppl ied addit ional l ights, LEDs and lasers. Leading UK l ight ing and v isual rental specia l ist HSL created the l ight ing and v ideo design for

the 2013 Total Product ion Internat ional (TPi ) Awards (seen in picture) , and suppl ied al l the necessary trussing, motors, r igging and control infrastructure plus crew needed to r ig over 350 Robe l ight ing f ixtures in the Bal l room of the Novotel , West London.

Working for TPi Awards show producers Mondia le Publ ishing and with Event Manager Ben Chadwick, the v isual design was created by HSL’s T im Fawkes in col laborat ion with Mike Oates. HSL’s event Project Manager was Spantax. The basic concept was to make i t “Funky, fun and more Rock ‘n’ Rol l than in previous years,” stated Fawkes, adding that the biggest chal lenge was being under pressure to produce something amazing looking to impress al l the top industry professionals who were present.

The Awards honour the most popular technical product ion, industry events and personal i t ies of the year, and over 1,000 guests attended to network, party, and appreciate the industry’s achievements in the last 12 months in the act ion packed Awards ceremony, presented by Lauren Laverne.

Other chal lenges for the event design included low cei l ing height and l imited roof weight loading in the room, which was great ly helped by the l ight weight of the Robe LED f ixtures.

Mult ip le trusses were insta l led in the roof to provide al l the l ight ing posit ions. The room was long width-ways, so i t was important to ensure that everyone was pul led into the onstage act ion when i t started, and also to involve a substant ia l number of tables further back in the middle sect ion.

Fawkes decided on an innovat ive asymmetr ic v ideo screen look for the stage, with a mixture of portra i t and landscape format LED screens hung at di fferent depths at the back. He matched th is with the l ight ing design. To br ing a beamy Rock ‘n’ Rol l edge to the room he used Robe LEDBeam 100s in c lusters of four – ACL sty le – in-between the onstage screens and also dotted around the stage and the room. “The sheer speed and the great colours of these f ixtures gives numerous opt ions for modern looks as wel l as being able to create more tradit ional ACL looks,” he expla ined.

At the back of the room, they insta l led a scaled down vers ion of the same screen design (a l l screens were suppl ied by VER) a lso interspersed by batches of LEDBeam 100s - Fawkes used a tota l of 132 Robe LEDBeam 100s.

82 of Robe CityFlex48 LED mult i -purpose f ixtures were dotted around the room, 24 were used in h igh res mode against the black in the back wal l , and the rest up- l ight ing the shimmering voi le room-wrap (suppl ied by Blackout) .

Of the 32 Robe ROBIN MMX Wash Beams, e ight were used over the stage, cover ing back l ight and creat ing breakup / beam effects, whi le the other 24 were placed on var ious trusses around the room to pick up on the walk-ups and make up comprehensive table looks and breakups.

24 of Robe’s new DLF LED wash l ights were chosen as the work horse for the stage l ight – “The internal barn doors a l lowed for great control over the l ight spi l l when working in c lose proximity to the tables and the LED screens”.

HSL’s crew boss Mark Scr imshaw led a team of seven techs, and together with Fawkes and Spantax, they commenced the get- in on Sunday evening at 7, and they were ready for the show on Monday evening at 6, including fu l l schedule of technical run throughs and rehearsals beforehand.

NEW MAC III AIRFX™ MOVABLE LC SERIES “DOORS“ ON hELENE FISChER ShOWS

Popular German enterta iner Helene Fischer played a pair of shows at the Ber l in Velodrom in

mid-December with l ight ing designer Jerry Appelt , incorporat ing a host of Mart in MAC luminaires into his design, including the new MAC I I I A i rFX, a long with v isual ly stunning set e lements l ike large movable “doors“ constructed of Mart in LC Plus Ser ies v ideo panels.

“The MAC I I I A i rFX has a real dominant beam, i t ’s n ice and br ight,“ Jerry said of the 1500-watt moving head f ixture. “We used them as an add-on opt ion for l ight ing looks real ly, working with a lot of MAC Auras. The MAC I I I A i rFX were powerfu l and quite re l iable. We used them on these shows only for mid-air effects, but I look forward to a lso using them as a beam and wash luminaire on other shows.”

The MAC I I I A i rFX is a new concept of a l ight ing f ixture that combines hardedge, mid-air effects and a wash f ie ld in one. I ts unique opt ical system al lows i t to adjust f rom a t ight beam to a wash instant ly.

Jerry had them placed in diagonal s ide trusses for s ide project ion with more f ixtures placed on the downstage edge project ing over the audience. The MAC I I I A i rFX houses an aer ia l effects wheel with four gobo designs, stock gobos which Jerry took advantage of throughout the show. “They’re very n ice gobos,” he says. “ I t was nice that i t wasn’t

necessary to make our own!”

Super br ight at near ly 60,000 lumens, the MAC I I I A i rFX is a lso powerfu l enough to cut through l ight f rom br ight LED screens, of which there were many on the Helene Fischer shows.

Besides a large, upstage LED backdrop, an integral part of the set design were two large movable LED side wal ls, or “doors”, made up of Mart in LC Plus Ser ies LED panels. Each door was 6 metres high by approximately 16 metres wide, huge LED wings that could move in and out.

The modular LC panels make i t possible to more f lex ib ly integrate l ight, v ideo and set design and offer key advantages over other types of LED panels such as greater br ightness, superb colour and br ightness uni formity, and easy setup.

“Another advantage of us ing the LC Ser ies is the i r low weight , ” Jer ry sa id o f the pane ls , wh ich we igh on ly 11 kg per square metre . Runn ing l i ve images and graph ica l content onto the LED doors were Maxed ias™, Mart in ’s user- f r iend ly media server for media compos ing and p layback. Four Maxed ias were used l i ve wi th two p lay ing back fu l l HD content . A l l systems were networked and cont ro l led v ia Ar tNet . Kr is Van Hu l lebusch served as Maxed ia Suppor t Eng ineer.

Numerous comments have referenced i t as one of the best looking TPi Awards shows to date in terms of aesthet ics, and HSL is extremely proud to have been able to show off i ts design capabi l i t ies in such a high-prof i le industry event.

Fawkes concluded, “The pressure was real ly on to produce something specia l – and you are effect ive ly performing for the whole industry. Our team was extremely strong, and WYSIWYG was an invaluable tool r ight through the process that meant that everything ran l ike c lockwork on s i te”.

PRG BOLSTERS ROLE OF WYSIWYG ON MAJOR EVENTS

Leading enterta inment technology f i rm PRG (Product ion Resource Group) has stepped up i ts

use of CAST Software’s wysiwyg in the programming of wor ld-class product ions, among them, the recent Superbowl XLVI I Hal f t ime Show.

Broadcast to 108 mi l l ion viewers, R&B star Beyoncé’s performance at the Superbowl show was watched by over 70,000 people at the New Orleans Superdome, with i ts breath-taking visual design by Al Gurdon, known for his work with Madonna and The Who.

I t was Gurdon’s fourth year on the Superbowl and the f i f th for wysiwyg . However, th is year, around 90 per cent of the design was programmed vi r tual ly using the latest re lease of the sui te, R30, more than a month in advance of the show, at PRG’s purpose-bui l t pre-v isual isat ion studio in London. L ight ing Director Rich Gorrod worked with Gurdon to design a system in AutoCAD, before uploading i t to wysiwyg with the help of previz expert, Chr is Burnage, and patching the show with programmer Michael “Oz” Owen, on a PRG V676 console.

wysiwyg R30 is unique among industry-purpose graphic appl icat ions, because i t a l lows l ight ing designers to select the speci f ic f ixtures they plan to use ( f rom a huge l ibrary that includes truss and gobos) and posit ion them precisely, for a pre-v isual isat ion of the design, which is absolute ly fa i thfu l to the real th ing. What the designer sees on-screen is exact ly what they wi l l get on the day of the event, lending wysiwyg i ts name – an acronym of ‘What You See Is What You Get’ .

“This year, we spent a lot of t ime programming at the PRG off ices in London before we actual ly went out on s i te,” recal ls Gorrod, “so we had a very good idea of what i t was going to look l ike when we got to New

Orleans. A lot of the other shows we do are not so organised, so we end up doing a lot of programming onsite, but with shows l ike the Superbowl, i t ’s possible to s i t in a studio somewhere and plot most of i t on wysiwyg .”

For the f i rst t ime th is year, af ter complet ing most of the wysiwyg p lot in London, Gorrod, together with Owen and Gurdon, took the system to New York and set up at the Alv in Ai ley dance studios where Beyoncé was rehears ing, affording the art ist and her crew an advance preview of the l ight ing design before they even lef t for New Orleans. Beyoncé had requested the presence of Owen and Gurdon dur ing rehearsals, so with the help of wysiwyg , the pair were able to reassure the star that their product ion would be a spectacular complement to her performance. This was also the f i rst year that wyg was taken to the actual venue, for f ine-tuning of the pre-v isual isat ion r ight up the eleventh hour.

“wysiwyg a l lowed us to do a lot of pre-programming with the music, in advance of having the r ig,” comments Gurdon. “We also took i t onsi te because we had very l imited access to the set on the f ie ld, so i t meant that we could programme vir tual ly to make up for that.”

Owen cont inued, “Much of the show this year came together a l i t t le later than usual , so for the f i rst t ime we took the wyg system to the venue and set i t up in our l ight ing off ice portacabin. Chr is and Richie had designed such an accurate model that most of the focuses were c lose enough to work stra ight away in rehearsals. The posit ion – and even the framing and zoom parameters in the VL3500 spot key l ights – would only need a quick tweak. This a l l saved a lot of the very l imited t ime, a l lowing me to focus on the notes f ly ing in f rom al l d i rect ions!”

PRG places increasing importance on CAST’s pre-visualisation suite for the design of spectacular displays, such as Beyonce’s performance at the recent Superbowl XLVII Halft ime Show.

“The wysiwyg system was a big step forward th is year, especia l ly in terms of speed,” he adds. “For the f i rst t ime, i t a l lowed us to v isual ise the ent i re show on one machine, with pretty much real t ime response.”

Owen, Gorrod and Burnage al l note that wysiwyg has become an increasingly important graphic appl icat ion tool and establ ished i tsel f as an intr ins ic part of their product ions. Whi le only a few years ago, they were hesi tant to employ the software in their approach, they now admit that they would struggle without i t , af ter recent re leases have seen wyg develop into a crucia l stage of the design process for heavi ly pre-programmed shows such as the Superbowl and Eurovis ion.

“ I t was very hard to do th is k ind of show before wysiwyg ,” says Gorrod, “so we’ve real ly come to re ly on i t . F ive or s ix years ago, I would ask Al [Gurdon] i f he wanted to use wysiwyg and he wouldn’t be so keen, but now he real ly real ises the importance of i t . And because of the improvements CAST has made, in recent years i t ’s become much more user-fr iendly and much more responsive.”

ARKAOS PRO, A NEW DIVISION DEDICATED PURELY TO LARGE-SCALE LIGhTING AND VISUAL PROJECTS

ArKaos, the leading provider of technology for l ive v isual performances, has chosen Prol ight &

Sound Frankfurt to announce the format ion of a new div is ion - ArKaos Pro.

ArKaos Pro has been formed speci f ical ly to serve the large-scale, professional level show and l ight ing projects, which now dominate much of the ArKaos cl ient base. The new div is ion wi l l operate a longside the exist ing ArKaos organizat ion.

“We have formed Arkaos Pro in acknowledgement of how ArKaos has grown and developed s ince i ts start ,” says business development manager, Agnes Wojewoda.

“ArKaos products have evolved into far more sophist icated solut ions over the past years as our software has cont inued to stretch boundar ies and our c l ient base divers i f ied.”

“ArKaos Pro wi l l dedicate i ts t ime and expert ise to the professional l ight ing market, which has expanded exponent ia l ly for us in the last few years and now demands greater attent ion, energy and more dedicated support than ever before.”

The announcement of the new div is ion coincide with the re lease of the new ArKaos Stadium Server, which

features 6+1 EDID managed fu l l HD outputs and is shown for the f i rst t ime at Prol ight & Sound.

ArKaos Stadium Server Specif ications• 6 + 1 EDID managed fu l l HD v ideo outputs• Ful l SSD storage al lowing up to 900 MB/s from the d isc• Mult ip le AMD FirePro GPUs• Up to 8K width v ideos• 2 network connect ions• 2 HD-SDI inputs• Neutr ik connectors on the back• Custom case with f ront display and LED str ip for v isual feedback

“We have decided that the t ime was r ight to make th is dist inct ion as the arr iva l of the new server marks a s igni f icant step forward in our professional product range and the internat ional standing of Prol ight & Sound provides the ideal spr ingboard from which to make th is announcement.”

In addit ion, ArKaos Pro is launching the f i rst major rev is ion of i ts V ideo Mapper. Amongst other improvements, th is new vers ion adds a new circ le pr imit ive, more control on the cropping area, a new and elegant way of combining mult ip le outputs with soft edge and a f i rst support for DMX control of surfaces and cropping.

“We’ve always used i t for b ig shows and people have always been impressed, but recent ly we’ve managed to get i t up to real t ime standards of speed,” Burnage adds, “and when you’ve got th is amount of f ixtures, that’s real ly quite a di ff icul t th ing to achieve. I t ’s a lso very accurate – after Superbowl, I got Oz to send me back the V676 show f i le and i t matched up perfect ly with the wysiwyg f i le. I was going through the cues and al l the l ights were in the r ight places; they were hi t t ing the r ight people at the r ight t ime.”

This is no small feat for wysiwyg when you consider that PRG’s l ighting arsenal comprised 671 LED fixtures, while Gurdon’s design called for 200 automated lights, including 160 Clay Paky Sharpys and 53 Atomic Strobes. “The performance of wysiwyg now is quite outstanding,” concludes Burnage.

wysiwyg R30 is avai lable now from the Members Only Area of the CAST website: www.cast-soft .com, where a demo vers ion, comprehensive product informat ion, and a showcase of the breadth of projects on which wysiwyg is p ivotal , are a lso avai lable. New releases are f ree for members.

Outlining the StageA total of more than 1,600 feet of the Elat ion Flex Pixel Tape was used to out l ine the stage, about 850 feet of i t on the outer runway and the rest on the centra l r ings. “We had tape on every edge of the stage,” said Passion’s L ight ing Designer, Ed White. “There are basical ly four concentr ic r ings of tape, with extra sect ions for the ramps and pit entrances.”

White expla ined how the LED-edged stage came about, “The stage design was largely dictated by the fact we were doing a stadium in the round. The nature of each session meant that we wanted to connect everyone in the room into the same exper ience, so curves and runways were the way to go. A happy accident occurred when we came

up with the f inal rev is ion of the stage design – f rom above i t looked ident ical to the Passion logo! Because of th is, and the unique shape and contours of the stage, we decided to highl ight the edges with an LED product.”

The Elat ion Flex Pixel Tape was selected for the job “after looking through var ious opt ions, sol id block colour products and other v ideo-capable products,” said White. “Elat ion Flex Pixel Tape was chosen for a combinat ion of i ts output, v iewing angle, abi l i ty to control each pixel separately, and i ts compet i t ive pr ic ing. Another key factor for us was that the tape is f lex ib le in both the hor izontal and vert ical p lanes, as we had to bend i t around lots of curves.”

A Pixel-Controlled LED-Bordered StageFurthermore, Elat ion and i ts s ister company Acclaim Lighting could provide a one-stop source for a l l the gear needed to make the concept of a pixel-control led LED-bordered stage a real i ty. Along with the Flex Pixel Tape, the fo l lowing products were used to implement the design: 10 Accla im Al-Net 8 ArtNet distros; 9,500 feet (a lmost 2 mi les! ) of Elat ion Accu DMX cable; 78 Flex Pixel DMX dr ivers; one Madr ix Neo (used as a DMX input f rom the main l ight ing console) ; one Madr ix Pro 64 universe key; one Madr ix Basic 16 universe key.

“My l ight ing console control led Madr ix at f ront of house, over DMX, which effect ive ly generated or played back v ideo content, and pixel-mapped i t to 77 universes of ArtNet,” expla ined White. “The ArtNet

was then distr ibuted into the rack of Al-Net 8 units under the stage, which output 77 universes of DMX, which ran to 2 x 10’ F lex Pixel Tapes each. Two tapes ran from one PSU/control ler, and took in just under one fu l l universe of data.”

This setup provided him with great f lex ib i l i ty as a designer, White said. “We actual ly used only a f ract ion of what was possible for each session. Somet imes I t reated the stage as one block of colour, to f rame i t ; other t imes we ran patterns or v ideo through i t for shimmering and swir l ing effects. We had the pixels mapped into separate sect ions in the Madr ix server, so we had separate control over the di fferent parts of the stage – the runways, br idges and center c i rc les, for example.”

Immense SatisfactionAs far as the c l ient and Passion 2013 attendees were concerned, “they loved i t ,” said White. “Everyone commented on how great i t looked, especia l ly f rom the ra ised seat ing sect ions. I t was certa in ly the most memorable and unique aspect to the l ight ing r ig.”

What’s more, everyone who was involved in the project agreed that the Passion 2013 pixel-control led LED stage design has groundbreaking impl icat ions for the product ion wor ld, which extend wel l beyond th is part icular appl icat ion.

Said Dust in Pesnel l , President/CEO, Freed Sales, which engineered the stage, “People in the enterta inment l ight ing business have been saying l ight ing and v ideo are start ing to become one category. We have now created the possibi l i ty of p ixel-control led staging as another tool in the box for creat ive l ight ing directors, and Passion 2013 was a testament to that concept.”

A select ion of wide-dispers ion loudspeaker models, designed and bui l t by Turbosound, have been insta l led in one of Beirut’s most

happening new nightclubs. “Ora is f i rst and foremost an after-work and night bar, with great music and an amazing v ibe,” expla ins c lub co-owner V iv ian Shal lop. “A crucia l part of our c lub’s reputat ion is secured on the ambience of the environment. The qual i ty of the sound is a huge part of creat ing that. The other e lement is the design of the surroundings and i t ’s fabulous that the speaker design is so discreet – they certa in ly don’t inter fere or detract f rom the smooth l ines of our inter ior design, and we are del ighted with the c lar i ty of sound from the system.”

“ I ’ve been a supporter of Turbosound speakers for many years as the sound is s imply amazing, real ly Hi-F i , even when the system is turned up to high SPLs,” comments Agha. “We chose to insta l l these models at the Ora bar because they f i t into the environment wel l , but a lso, of course, because their wide dispers ion means that we can achieve great sound in a l l of the bar’s areas with fewer speaker uni ts.”

The opening night of the c lub saw an excit ing mix of c l iente le, including Lebanese celebr i t ies such as Joe Ashkar and his wi fe Grace Ayanian, as wel l as comic Mar io Bassi l . I t was a busy and popular n ight, and Ora now looks set to become the Beirut hotspot.

C ountry music superstar Carr ie Underwood cont inues her Blown Away wor ld tour with a large inventory of Clay Paky Sharpy f ixtures

on hand to accent the v ideo components of the show. The s inger’s f i rst wor ldwide tour is in support of her fourth a lbum, “Blown Away.”

Light ing designer Peter Morse of Peter Morse Product ions in South Lake Tahoe, Cal i fornia, based his l ight ing scheme around three extremely large, t rapezoidal-shaped, moving LED panels, which posed dynamic weight, power and s ight- l ine block chal lenges. A t i l t ing project ion f loor added to the task, “necessi tat ing a ‘surgical ’ appl icat ion to l ight ing design and programming to avoid washing out a l l the projected images,” Morse reports. He decided to hang the trussing in a way to complement and ampl i fy the angles created by the trapezoid-shapes moving LED wal ls.

Lighting programmer Brian Jenkins noted that, “we were crunched on programming time for starters and then there were complications with the overal l size of the r ig when we hit rehearsals. Thankful ly, within a f ive-day span of programming, we didn’t have to worry about the Sharpy f ixtures. Yoked out, on extreme angles, upside down, r ight side up – it is an absolute workhorse, the one f ixture in the r ig we didn’t worry about. Everyone sees Clay Paky’s engineering and rel iabi l i ty in their products. It’s about t ime someone set the bar higher in our industry.”

Morse used the Sharpys for “v isual ampl i f icat ion of var ious musical punctuat ion in an attempt to draw the eyes of the audience to the art ist or other areas of importance” that the extensive LED video imagery may have distracted them from. “The Sharpy f ixtures were posit ioned to accentuate the angular look of the scenery and LED panels,” he explained.

The Sharpys are performing “flawlessly,” according to Morse, who calls them “fast, bright and amazingly competitive against the otherwise overwhelming output of the LED walls.” The Blown Away world tour has been “lots of fun,” he said. “A great artist, great music, fabulous visuals – it’s a large and physically complex show with a look you won’t see anywhere else.”

“ I ’m proud to see the Sharpys on such a high prof i le tour and glad that Br ian and Peter are gett ing the most out of them,” commented Mr. Francesco Romagnol i , the Area Manager ( for North and Lat in America) at Clay Paky.

LIGHTINGSHOWCASE

S wedish s inger-songwri ter Petra Marklund, who also performs under the name ‘September’, has been tour ing the country’s concert

hal ls th is spr ing with one of the most dynamical ly unique stage sets imaginable — fabr icated largely f rom more than 3,000 SGM LED Bal ls (LB-100) ingeniously r igged as an overhead, interact ive spat ia l canopy.

The design is the brainchi ld of top l ight ing designer Henr ik Lundin, of Stockholm-based company Satel l i te L ive. He designed a massive spat ia l canopy with 3,360 SGM LB-100s.

Pixel-Mapped 3D LED BallsWith a quest to constant ly provide unique solut ions to inspire h is creat iv i ty, Lundin has bought into SGM’s pioneer ing, next generat ion LED products immediate ly. Having used the new X-5 LED strobes on tour with Veronica Maggio and Maskinen last year, he has now conceived his most outrageous design yet for the beaut i fu l Ms. Marklund. When the tour opened in Stockholm, the impact of the pixel-mapped 3D LED bal ls, and the way in which the art iste interacted with them, stunned audiences.

Henr ik Lundin f i rst saw the LED Bal ls at London’s PLASA Show in September and started discussing the possibi l i t ies with SGM Sweden’s Mikael Uddh. “When I see a new product, my head is f i l led with ideas,” he stated. “When I had my f i rst meet ing with Petra, she wanted to create a warmer environment with in the large concert hal ls, to give her more int imate engagement with her audience. She recal led seeing an art iste using a more basic concept, with convent ional l ight bulbs set in bal ls — and that’s when I knew I had found the art iste to debut the LB-100s in Sweden with.”

Henr ik Lundin has created many unique sets for the art iste over the years — from her more Euro disco dance music to the int imate songs and bal lads of th is tour. Working closely with Scandinavian booking agency Bl ixten & Co, he sources his l ight ing from rental company Lagom & Gott L jud. Mikael Uddh set up a working demo for both part ies to prove conclusively that the LB-100 concept would work.

The Light Ball CanopyIn th is instance, the Light Bal l canopy, made up of ten PDUs and seven str ings attached to each, g ives him a matr ix of 60 x 56 of the bal ls — cover ing around 6m x 6.5m of a f ixed 8m x 8m stage, with 6 metres c learance overhead to the PDUs.

Or ig inal ly designed as a v ideo l ight curta in, with low-resolut ion 120mm pixel p i tch, the LB-100 display is made up from 0.85 metres long str ings, each contain ing seven white semi-transparent LED bal ls. Each 34mm sphere contains two powerfu l RGB LEDs (rated at 42mW per pixel ) to create a 3D effect when v iewed through 360° with a tota l power draw of just 42W.

Lundin pixel-mapped the array using a Hippot izer media server. The show is run from a grand MA2 console running MaNet, with three MA2 NPU network processors to give him 24 DMX universes; th is is run over a Luminex network.

“ In th is way, I can create two separate wor lds, using specia l ly made content f rom Hippotozier or using the bal ls as convect ional RGB f ixtures. When [Petra Marklund] performs her h i t s ingle Hands To Heaven, she reaches up to the canopy and i t ’s as i f she is immersed in Heaven, f ly ing through clouds.”

Whi le the LB-100s provide an extremely powerfu l solut ion, the logist ics were “a nightmare”. Yet Henr ik Lundin has perfected a fast r ig and der ig procedure for the hammock-l ike canopy, with safe transportat ion using a ser ies of dol l ies and steel p ipes.

“ I had to be sure th is would be manageable. There are 15,000 di fferent l ight ing parameters on th is tour, so there’s a lot than can go wrong and i t was quite scary when the r ig was set up for the f i rst t ime. But the LED Bal ls behaved just about perfect ly.”

Henr ik Lundin has also used four white X-5 SGM white strobes to create l ight behind the drummer, general ly favour ing ambers and natural autumn colours for the scenography to sui t the personal e lement of the show.

Summing up, the designer said, “The response has been great… everyone is amazed by the LED Bal ls and the solut ion I have created. I have received great feedback and everyone is cur ious how i t is achieved.

“Once I ’ve found a cool idea, I general ly let i t go after one tour,” he admits. But Henr ik Lundin has no such intent ion with the LB-100s.
