ith this Proud Achievers Magazine, readers - from our school community and beyond - will
quickly capture the essence of our school’s vision, which is to be “a world-class community of proud and outstanding achievers”.
Proud achievements occur in many diverse areas: from the academic competitions that we regularly embrace to the other dimensions that make up a balanced education. These include: sports and fitness, business and enterprise, performing and visual arts, as well as service to the community.
As you read and view the pages of our magazine, it’s clear that talents abound across the different achievement areas. These pages show BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug not just as a community of proud achievers, but also as a community of balanced achievers who also make important contributions to the world around them.

Jordhy Fiandra Darmawan“Focus. That’s My Key for Success”
Years
Name : Jordy Fiandra DarmawanGrade : EY3BBirthday : January 23, 2006
Bright, active, and adorable ‒ that’s PROUD’s first impression of Jordhy Fiandra Darmawan, the winner for Kindergarten level Sekolah Bogor Raya (SBR) Interschool Spelling Bee VI, last March. Who would’ve thought, the shy kindergartener managed to perform impressively on stage and fluently pronounced letters by letters in the competition.
Jordhy came out as the first winner. Born in January 23, 2006, the boy managed to spell 25 words with utter perfection. “Jordhy was perfect,” says Jordhy’s teacher and trainer, Ms Maricar Sanchez.
Not only his teacher, his parents also helped to train Jordhy at home. Even though this is his first time in the competition, Jordy who wants to be a policeman when he grows up, performed brilliantly.
The competition actually presented a number of difficult words, especially for kindergarten students who are still learning to read and write. For
instance, there was the word “kitten”, which has two identical letters.
Is it difficult for Jordhy? Hmm, the boy who likes to read admits he had no problem in the competition. The teacher supported the fact by saying that during their training sessions, Jordhy had an excellent track record. At one point, his mother and teacher had some doubts. Will Jordhy be able to remember all the words being taught? “They can read, so they can spell words. They practice writing and then spellit out. They don’t think about the pressure,” Ms. Maricar adds.
When Jordhy felt nervous, he managed to overcome it by himself. Usually, when a word is presented to him, Jordhy will close his eyes before opening them and looking up so he can concentrate. “Go slowly, dont rush, take a deep breath,” Ms. Maricar says.

Another achievement has been made by a BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug student. Ayra Chantiqa Putri Wibowo won the silver medal in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) 2011, Mathematics Category.
“It all started when the students of my class received a letter of announcement, and I really like math, so I enlisted,” says the girl who was born on March 20, 2002.
In addition to Mathematics Category, Ayra was also listed in the Writing Category. However, according to Ayra, she made a mistake by using a somewhat “weird” punctuation mark, which made the computer fail to analyze her writing.
“I wrote the wrong punctuation mark, because I usually write exclamation marks with extra ornaments,” says the fan of Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars and Katy Perry. Since Ayra’s still a little girl, her parents had introduced her to various competitions. The long-haired girl managed to
show her potential numerous times. She came out as the first winner for Accrostic competition, Best Costume for Family Week and the contest organized by ENOPI, a Math and English Course institution. So far, BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL has been supporting her by conducting special trainings for Ayra. This is one of the reasons why Ayra is still eager to participate in future competitions: because she has the support of her parents and her school.
“With my ability, my parents’ support and BINUS Simprug, I am determined to follow more competitions in the future,” she says. And of course, the previous competitions will provide valuable experience for her.

When it comes to classical music, Amatta Mirandari Hardjanto is definitely not a newcomer. She has been pursuing her passion in classical music since the age of three. Now, besides being an eighth-grade student in BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug, Amatta is still trying to develop her musical talent by participating in several music competitions. One of her successful contests was BINUS Music Fiesta 2011, when she came out as the 1st place winner for Solo Piano.
Her parents, who introduced her to classical music (especially to piano and violins), are supporting her every step. This way, it’s easy for this teenage girl to keep falling in love with both instruments. Along her
journey, she comes across a lot of interesting experiences.‘I learn a lot of things. For instance, when I was in the fifth grade, I participated in a competition in Malaysia. I get to meet children from other countries,” says the girl who idolizes Nat King Cole and Kenny G.
With her ability to play piano and violin, Amatta wants to help and entertain a lot of people. To achieve her wish, Amatta is trying to use her time wisely, by fighting any laziness and practising effectively. In addition to the musical competitions, Amatta also won the Silver medal for Science category in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) 2011. Amatta
has always been a big fan of science and music, and she is trying to make the most out of every chance she gets.
“I like competitions, because I want to win and I like to see the goal when I am working on something. That way, I can learn from my experiences,” says the violinist who is also a fan of biology study.
BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug is supporting Amatta’s talents and capabilities by providing facilities through various competitions. BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug is cooperating with parents to prepare and train the children, so they are ready to face competitions. (MT)

Nothing succeeds like success - a perfect way to describe the achievement of BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug. Another student of BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug has just accomplished an international-scaled achievement on ICAS (International Competitions and Assessments for Schools) 2011. The star of the moment is Kevinski Emeraldo Himawan.
Kevin didn’t stop at nothing. He is the winner of the Gold Medal for English ICAS 2011. ICAS is a competition organized by UNSW (University of New South Wales). There are several subjects listed on ICAS, such as Computer Skills, English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling and Writing. A gold medal means number one in Indonesia.
In addition to his own capability, Kevin is constantly supported by his parents and BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug for ICAS 2011. “Before I started to compete in ICAS, my teachers helped us to prepare for the competition. They gave us old ICAS tests and we discussed the answers with them. That way, we are trained to answer the ICAS test,” says Kevin, who likes to play guitar in his spare time.
Kevin was quite shocked when he was announced as the Gold
Medal winner. He had difficulties in answering the questions in the test and he had limited time. However, he managed to overcome all that and obtained the highest score in English ICAS Category.
Besides the ICAS 2011 Competition, Kevin also represented BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug in IYLF (International Young Leaders Forum) 2011. He was chosen by the Headmaster of BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug for a reason. He has an excellent GPA, a good command in English and the potential to be a leader.
“I am one of the eight representatives from Indonesia who participated in the event. In IYLF, we shared our culture with international students and, on the other hand, we also learned about their culture,” says the student who wants to be an engineer in the future.
According to Kevin, this forum taught him many things. He discovered a lot of new things about foreign culture and he learned how to be a better leader. He also learned other important skills such as discussion ethics, idea-sharing and proper planning.
Kevin gained valuable experience in IYLF. He learned to be open-minded and he had to solve problems caused by
cultural differences. In IYLF, there were representatives from United States, Singapore, Korea, China, Australia and Indonesia. All the programs were organized by students of Bugil Academy GLP Korea.
Kevin participated in several competitions, such as ICAS English, Mathematics and Science, and an instrumental guitar competition. With these competitions, Kevin wants to measure his own capability outside the school community. Moreover, these competitions help Kevin to develop his talents and hobbies.
Kevin has a huge ambition when it comes to competitions. Of course, he is trying to balance his study in school. “For competitions like ICAS, I prepared myself by learning from the tests. With this type of competition, the preparation can be done simultaneously. So, I can learn for my study and for the competition at the same time,” Kevin says.
The valuable experience provides the knowledge which Kevin needs to face future challenges. Kevin also urges other students to aim for the stars. “Reach your dreams! The sky is the limit! I know this sounds cliché, but I find truth in those words,” says the boy, who was born in Singapore, July 19 1994, as he laughs. (RA)

International Robot Olympiad 2011Those Who Triumphed on International Competition
“It was really dicult,” Andrew describes his experience on the 13th International Robot Olympiad, organized at Tarumanegara University, Jakarta. He explains how they built the robot from scratch and put together even the smallest parts, how they made the program, and other activities along the way. Yes, Andrew Johannes Suwardi (13), Ivan Fransiga (15) and Richard Felix (12) once again have proven their ability. The three of them created a robot named “B-Bot” to compete in IRO 2011. The robot is designed to save people if a volcano eruption occurred.“We chose this utility because we know in Indonesia there are at least 100 active volcanoes. That’s why we created B-Bot, to help if there’s an eruption,” says Andrew, who likes to cook in his spare time. Each of them has dierent skills in designing robot for the competition which was held on December 15-18, 2011. Andrew’s task was to build the robot’s body. Felix had to create the wheels and posters. Meanwhile, Ivan made the robot’s hands, integrated the whole body parts and made the program. The group which was categorized as the youngest contestants in the Challenge Category worked together and gave their best. “They came up with the idea themselves. We only provided mental support and helped them maintain their trainings,” explains Ros Maria Andesko, their teacher and advisor. Ivan, Andrew and Felix are members of the Robotic group on BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug. They have the ability and creativity needed in designing and building robots. That’s why, the school located at Simprug, South Jakarta, is providing full support for them in this international competition. This is the rst time BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug participating on the international competition, which was held for the 13th time. However, they are still proud of their achievements, because they have been giving their best preparation. “We won because we used small parts and we stick to the criteria and rules,” Felix says. The sixth grader of BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug, along with Ivan and Andrew, was motivated to win the competition because they want to improve their talent, which has been their passion since they were kids. HOPE Walk-a-thon 201124 July 20111st and 2nd place
|9 APRIL 2012
Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) students at BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug cooperated with HOPE Worldwide to organize Walk-A-Thon and Bike A-Thon 2012 at the National Monument (Monas), Central Jakarta, on Sunday (25/3). The event was officially opened by Indonesia’s Coordinating People's Welfare Minister, H.R Agung Laksono.
The event was followed by more than 4,000 participants, including volunteers, donors and children. Meanwhile, the theme was Stop TB in My Lifetime. The event also coincided with World Tuberculosis Day, which is commemorated on 24th of March.
Participants of Walk-A-Thon and Bike A-Thon 2012 finished the five-kilometer track, from Monas to HI Traffic Circle and back to Monas. The purpose was to raise funds to help Tuberculosis (TB) patients in Indonesia.
“Our target was Rp 540 million, which will be used to treat 250 Tuberculosis patients. They will be treated in HOPE Tuberculosis Clinic until they’re healed,” explained the Coordinator of CAS ‒ BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug, Ms. Vivi Trenggono.
Directur of Development & Communication of HOPE Worldwide Indonesia, Ms. Lily Salim, explained that they work with Stop TB Partnership, Indonesia’s Health Department and World Health Organization (WHO) and they will help the effort to fight Tuberculosis, a disease which is killing 39 people every day and more than 68,000 people every year.
They need, more or less, Rp 9,000 every day for their treatment. The treatment spans in 6 to 8 months. Hopefully, this fund-raising event can change Indonesia for the better, to be a healthier nation.
“We hope our students involved in this event will continue to be agents of change, bringing hope and creating changes for those in need,” Ms. Vivi said. (YD)
Helping Tuberculosis Patients with Walk-A-Thon
and Bike-A-Thon
A middle-aged man stood on a small stage. He was accompanied by an empty barrel, and he performed theatrically with a black backdrop. The lights dimmed for a moment before turning brighter and dimmer once again. That didn’t stop the man from performing, delivering a dramatic performance for the audience.
The act is a part of a monolog executed by the legendary artist Mr. Putu Wijaya. The show titled Sejarah Putu Wijaya (The History of Putu Wijaya) was held in the Drama Room of BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug, on Friday (16/3) at noon. Students and teachers of BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug attended the event.
The monolog told the story of a modest and honest family, which consists of parents and their boy. The boy accomplished an
incredible achievement, while the community and even his own parents almost didn’t believe it could’ve happened. “Taksu (the boy) earned a perfect ten. I can’t believe this,” his dad said.
Dad had reasons for his distrust. Taksu was known as a computer geek and he didn’t socialize much. Most of his daily activities took place in front of a computer. Then, because of his outstanding grades, Taksu’s dad brought him a new motorcycle. Taksu had an accident afterwards. The motorcycle was destroyed, but Taksu survived.
When Taksu’s dad found out about the accident, he was really furious and slapped his own child. “What have you done? I still have installments for the motorcycle, but you destroyed it,” Taksu’s dad said. After he thought about it for a while, Taksu’s dad realized that he was
wrong and he apologized to Taksu.
According to Putu Wijaya, the family forgot about something. “Taksu needs love and compassion, not new stuff,” Mr. Putu said. This is the moral message that Putu was trying to say. “A lot of people tried to give everything for their children, everything but love,” Mr. Putu explained. (RA)
