Spruce Up WindowsTake the time to decorate your win-dows and storefronts for the holidays. It doesn’t take much - a string or two of lights, wreaths, holly and other cut greens stuck into window boxes and artful dis-plays cogent to your particular shop’s of-ferings. The annual Kerrisdale Window Decoration Contest will be judged the evening of December 3 with a lovely prize offered by the KBA Board. Please help us make Kerrisdale the most welcoming shopping district this holiday season.

Y es, it’s that time of year again when families gather throughout the Village of Kerrisdale for our iconic free holiday events
and close-to-home shopping & feasting. All Village decorations will be in place by end of November with
banners, swags and lights add-ing that touch of magic to the darkest weeks of the year while lifting our collec-tive spirits. New this season is the
soft banner lighting on all the lamp standards mak-ing Kerrisdale the first Business Improvement Area in the city to employ this illumination technique. This combined with our sparkling white pole lights will add warmth to an otherwise chilly atmosphere.

Snow Removal in the Kerrisdale Business District
There’s lots of talk about global warming but strangely enough that can also mean more snow. Snow, ice and sidewalks are not a good mix, however. Now is the time to get all the facts on your respon-sibility as a business owner, especially if you have public sidewalks out front.
To be clear, business owners should know that they are responsible for clearing the sidewalk in front of their building of snow and ice by 10 am as this is a City of Vancouver By-law. More importantly, by keeping on top of the shoveling and de-icing, you keep your busi-ness accessible for loyal neighbourhood patrons who rely on nearby services. To be prepared, stock up now on bags of salt and a snow shovel! For more information on snow removal rules and regulations go to www.vancouver.ca
Annual General Meeting
The KBA hosted its Annual General Meeting at the Arbutus Club on Sep-tember 10th. The gathering was well at-tended and members were brought up to speed on next year’s operating budget (no increase over this year’s) as well as the myriad of KBA activities. A special post-humous ‘Citizen of the Decades’ award was presented to past KBA President Jim Hill, whose Hills of Kerrisdale store opened in 1960. His widow and daughter accepted the honour before an appreciative audience.
Sweep the Streets Daily
Just a reminder that as the last leaves fall from the street trees it is the responsibility of the storefronts facing the sidewalk to sweep and dispose of litter and leaves. Please deposit debris in litter cans. If we all do our bit the Village of Kerrisdale will be tidy and inviting to patrons.
Restaurant and Food PurveyorsMust Recycle Solid Waste in 2015
Keeping food and food waste out of the garbage will be mandatory for all Metro Vancouver businesses and institutions by January 1, 2015. Food and food waste are often referred to as organics or green waste, and include fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, dairy items and eggs, as well as baked goods and prepared, processed and frozen foods. Full-service and quick-service restaurant organics also include plate scrapings, paper napkins and bags, uncoated paper cups and plates, coffee filters and tea bags, wooden utensils, chopsticks, stir sticks and toothpicks. Essentially, businesses will no longer be able to combine all matter of their refuse in one bin but must seek out operators who will offer the required services for separated pick-up. For more information go to this Metro Vancouver web site: http://bit.ly/1tiPuBj
Attention Produce Stores and Eateries
As of January 1, 2015 it will be against the law to mix organics with other garbage. This will especially affect food related businesses. The approved bylaw amendments restrict the disposal of food waste with garbage and require that all holders of business licenses, and own-ers or occupiers of either residential or non-residential properties in Vancouver have a food waste diversion plan and ensure that food waste is disposed of according to that plan. The food waste diversion plan must be to the satisfaction of the City Engineer. This means that businesses, and other property owners and occupants that produce food scraps, should develop and put in place plans to divert those ma-terials from garbage in 2015. Please check with your current garbage service provider as they may be able to help you plan for this change. Learn more about the upcoming program at metrovancouver.org or via email to [email protected]
Free Horse & Carriage RidesTIME: 11 AM - 4 PMDATES: Dec. 6, 13, 20 & 23
Grab the children and the grandparents and transport them back in time to a Courier & Ives Christmas card. The gentle giants embodied in AAA Horse & Carriage’s shire horses, bedecked in bells and red velvet ribbons, remind us of Christmases of a century ago while we take a slow trot past the beautiful Holiday windows throughout the village. Rides will start at west 41st & Yew Street north.
Santa & His Elf TIME: 12 NOON – 4 PMDATES: Dec. 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21 & 23
Our very own Santa has made special arrangements to visit Kerrisdale every weekend right up to December 23rd when he must ready himself for his magical global journey. Santa and company will be giving their black boots a workout on the streets of the village where he will visit every shop many times over giving out free, individually wrapped European chocolates to delight the sweet tooth in us all.
Christmas Quartets & Brass Bands TIME: 12 NOON – 4 PMDATES: Dec. 6, 13, 20 & 23
Christmas quartets - some people ask why our roving singers and brass players just don’t stay put under a tent. Well, the answer is that our Christmas entertain-ers hit every area of the village, nipping in here and there to escape Mother Nature’s sometimes withering weather. The singers, two individual groups, along with a gaggle of Tubas, saxophone and roving Brass Band will rekindle the holiday spirit in every Kerrisdale shop-per!
Free Village SkatingTIME: 3:45 - 5:30 PMDATE: Dec. 21 at the Kerrisdale Arena
The KBA’s annual Gliding On Ice event at The Ker-risdale Arena is on December 21st from 3:45 - 5:30 pm. Free skating and skate rentals, Christmas music and free refreshments while they last! All sponsored by our local shops and services. There will be a surprise Visit by Santa and fun for all. Even if you don’t skate, drop by, and sit in the stands while children and adults glide around the arena. You will be transported!

Vancouver Courier NewspaperPhoto Contest
Decades ago the above ubiquitous com-munity newspaper was located right in the heart of our village and known as The Kerrisdale Courier. Though it now serves a much broader audience, it has always maintained a special bond with us. From December 1st -17th the Vancouver Courier and the KBA will spon-sor a holiday photo contest for visitors to Kerrisdale. Photos that speak to the seasonal festivities and then are posted to Instagram #kerrisdalechristmas between those dates could be lucky prize winners. Please display the contest posters when they are dropped off to you prior to the event. Further details to come in the Courier.
