Offered as a partnership between the Woodbridge Township School District and the Woodbridge Recreation Department

Students participating in an all-day course or both morning and afternoon

sessions must bring a bag lunch from home and will be supervised by instructors during the lunch period.

Babysitting / CPR Certification Grade Levels (entering Sept. 2015): 8-12 June29—July 2 (4 days), Avenel Middle School AM Session 9am – 11:30 am, AMS Rm. 202 PM Session 12:30 – 3pm, AMS Rm. 202 Students will learn child safety precautions, first aid techniques, and emergency protocols. They will receive instruction in CPR / AED use, and will have the opportunity to become certified at the end of the course. The 4-day session culminates with a CPR skills test which is a physical performance of the students’ new skills. Students need to bring a notebook and pen to class and should wear comfortable clothing. Instructors: Ms. Bachant, M.S., R.N., NJ-CSN Ms. Bachant has been a nurse for 35 years. She began her career working in Intensive Care nursing for 18 years and has been a certified school nurse in Woodbridge Township for 16 years. She also offers CPR certification classes for faculty, staff, and coaches. Dance Camp Grade Levels (entering Sept. 2015): 3-5 June29—July 2 (4 days), John F. Kennedy Memorial High School AM Session 9am – 11:30 am, JFK Auditorium Students will participate in Free Form Based Modern Technique, Jazz Tech-nique including Classical Jazz, Musical Theatre Jazz and Hip Hop as well as Movement Improvisation and Composition to guide students in creating move-ment and crafting movement phrases. Important concepts that apply to strong dance technique will be covered such as correct anatomical body alignment, kinesthetic awareness, strength building, flexibility, balance, turns, leaps, and exploration of movement quality. Coursework will be geared to fit the technical ability of each dancer. Instructor: Ms. Perosi Ms. Perosi received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Boston Conservatory and also attended the Alvin Ailey School. Ms. Perosi danced with many New Eng-land dance companies as well as the Premiere Dance Theatre in Montclair, NJ. She taught in private dance studios for 10 years before obtaining her NJ State teaching certificate. Ms. Perosi piloted dance programs in Ocean and Union County Vocational and Performing Arts schools and is currently the Dance in-structor at JFK Memorial High School as well as a member of the National Dance Education Organization and Dance NJ. Video Game Design Grade Levels (entering Sept. 2015): 4-5(AM), 6-8(PM) July 6-10, Avenel Middle School AM Session 9am – 11:30 am, AMS Rm. 108 computer lab PM Session 12:30 – 3pm, AMS Rm. 108 computer lab Students will use Gamestar Mechanic, a game-based digital learning platform, to design and create their own video games. Throughout the process, students will engage in analytical thinking, experimenting and testing theories, creative problem-solving, writing and storytelling, and art and aesthetics. Students will have the opportunity to play games created by classmates as well as to have classmates test the games they create. Instructor: Ms. Sherry Ms. Sherry is a middle school Gifted & Talented Enrichment teacher in the Woodbridge Township School District. She has been teaching in the district for 14 years with the first 3 years as an elementary school teacher and the remaining 11 in middle schools. Ms. Sherry has a Master’s Degree in Math and Computer Education and taught middle school computers for 9 years. In addition, Ms. Sherry is a licensed attorney in the state of New Jersey. Rise of the Robots!!! Grade Levels (entering Sept 2015): 6-8(AM), 4-5(PM)

July 6-10, Avenel Middle School AM Session 9am – 11:30 am, AMS CAFE PM Session 12:30 – 3pm, AMS CAFE Forget Battlebots!!!! In this class you will build your own robots!!!!! Students will receive an introduction to Robotics. They will be using Lego Mindstorms NXT Robot kits. They will be building and programming robots to compete against other students in races and other competitions. Students must bring an open and creative mind. May the best robot win! Instructor: Mr. Hoyer Mr. Hoyer currently teaches Robotics at Woodbridge High School. He is currently in his 16th year of teaching in Woodbridge Township. In addition to Robotics he has taught 7th Grade Life Science, 8th Grade Physical Science, Integrated Science, Earth Science, Oceanography and Astronomy. Lego Robotics Grade Levels (entering Sept 2015): 1-2

July 6-10, Avenel Middle School Full-day Session 9am – 3pm, AMS 201 Students will participate in learning opportunities that pair hands-on manipulatives with integrated technology and curriculum to create a mind-conscious experience that is aligned with key educational standards and learning objectives. The project-based activities will help build science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) knowledge while incorporating lessons in language arts. Working in small groups, students will utilize their skills to create moving models, all while enhancing their creative and problem-solving abilities. Instructor: Ms. McCormick Ms. McCormick has experience teaching in grades K-5. She currently teaches 5th grade. She has a Masters Degree in Educational Administration and Supervision and is trained in the teaching of Lego Robotics using WeDo kits as well as various coding software products. Calling All Writers! Creative Writing Camp

Grade Levels (entering Sept. 2015): 6-8 July 13-17, Colonia Middle School AM Session 9am – 11:30am, CMS Rm. 312 PM Session 12:00 – 2:30pm, CMS Rm. 312 Join us for a week-long course focusing on creative writing. Students will participate in the writing process (brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing), develop writing skills through fun activities and games, and publish a hard cover book or digital story by the end of the week. Students should bring a writing utensil and a notebook. Instructors: Ms. Mentzel and Ms. Neidhardt Ms. Mentzel has been a teacher for 6 years and has been the supervisor at the Evergreen Youth Center since 2012. She coaches volleyball and advises the National Junior Honor Society at CMS. She received her Masters Degree from New Jersey City University. Ms. Neidhardt has been a teacher for 7 years at Colonia Middle School. She is currently attending Montclair State University for a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership. Grade Levels (entering Sept. 2015): 5-6 July 13-17, Colonia Middle School AM Session 9am – 11:30am, CMS Rm. 208 PM Session 12:00 – 2:30pm, CMS Rm. 208 Students will increase their skills on the computer for classroom, PARCC and life readiness. AM session will focus on keyboarding, PowerPoint, Publisher, Prezi and iMovie. PM session will focus on keyboarding, Excel, Word, iMovie and Google Earth. Instructor: Mr. Mentzel Mr. Mentzel grew up in Avenel, NJ and attended CHS. He graduated with a B.S. in Finance from the University of Rhode Island. He has 4 years experience teaching computers at CMS and has also worked in banking and logistics. ¡Viva el Español! (Spanish Summer Immersion Camp)

Grade Levels (entering Sept. 2015): 3-5 July 13-17, Colonia Middle School AM Session 9am – 11:30 am, CMS Library PM Session 12:00 – 2:30pm, CMS Library Immerse yourself in the Spanish language and cul-tures. Students will learn basic vocabulary through games, songs, crafts and activities. Engaging and fun online apps will be explored. Students will pro-duce a skit, song and crafts by the end of the week. Instructors: Ms. Clifford and Ms. Henriques Ms. Clifford is a native speaker from Ecuador who has been teaching Spanish and World Language in Colonia Middle School for 14 years. Ms. Henriques has been teaching Spanish and World Language classes in Colonia Middle School for 11 years. 21st Century Math Applications

Grade Levels (entering Sept. 2015): 6-8 July 13-17, Colonia Middle School AM Session 9am – 11:30am, CMS Rm. 105 PM Session 12:00 – 2:30pm, CMS Rm. 105 Students will have a choice of projects to work on during the week that relate to 21st century skills. Projects may include creating business plans, designing a theme park or zoo, developing and adhering to budgets, designing and building bridges, and more. Students should bring a notebook, pencil and eraser to class. Instructor: Ms. Kerbis Ms. Kerbis is a math teacher at CMS. She also coaches volleyball and is Student Council co-advisor. Mr. O. the Science Pro’s Exploration of the Natural World Grade Levels (entering Sept. 2015): 6-8(AM), 4-5(PM) July 13-17, Colonia Middle School AM Session 9am – 11:30 am, CMS Rm. 111 PM Session 12:00 – 2:30pm, CMS Rm. 111 Students will learn about the formation of stars, galaxies, solar systems, and earth. They will use microscopes to glimpse into the microscopic world around us. Multicellular organisms of all types and how they have adapted will be introduced in the exploration of animal diversity. Rock and mineral samples will be used to study geology, and students will gain an understanding of plate tectonics, weathering, and erosion. Students will also create Styrofoam racecars to assist in the understanding of forces, motion, and energy. Each topic will include hands-on, fun, engaging experiments. Instructor: Mr. Olvesen Mr. Olvesen lived in the Galapagos Islands for six months and the Amazon Jungle for two months researching various biology topics. He is passionate about all aspects of the natural world. He has taught science at various levels and has a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership and Supervision. Let’s Play! Instrumental Music Camp

Grade Levels (entering Sept. 2015): 7-8(AM), 5-6(PM) August 17-21, Avenel Middle School AM Session 9am – 11:30 am, AMS Rm. 123 PM Session 12:30 – 3pm, AMS Rm. 123 Students will refine their performance skills and learn about music theory. Students who have experienced at least one year of instrumental music on flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, or percussion are invited to attend. Students need to bring their own instrument each day. Students who normally use a school-provided instrument should e-mail Mr. Healy at [email protected] to make arrangements. The camp will conclude with a concert on the last day around the regularly scheduled dismissal time. Please note instrument played and years experi-ence on registration form. Instructor: Mr. Healy Mr. Healy has been a school music teacher for the last 14 years, 11 of which have been in the Woodbridge Township School District. He has both a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree. He performs regularly as trumpeter and also composes music. Grade Levels (entering Sept 2015): 1-3 August 17-21, Avenel Middle School AM Session 9am – 11:30 am, AMS Rm. 202 (Mr. Cerreto) PM Session 12:30 – 3pm, AMS Rm. 202 (Ms. Steinberg) Through technology, exciting activities, and experiments students will learn about Life Science and Physical Science. All students will share in the role of scientist. Students who love cool science will love this course. Come prepared to laugh and have fun. Students should wear clothing that they don’t mind getting messy and should bring a smock as well as a marble notebook and pencil. Instructors: Ms. Steinberg & Mr. Cerreto Ms. Steinberg has taught 1st, 4th and 6th grade. She enjoys all science-based activities. Creating Computer Coding Connoisseurs

Grade Levels (entering Sept 2015): 3-4(AM), 5-6(PM) August 17-21, Avenel Middle School AM Session 9am – 11:30 am, AMS 405 PM Session 12:30 – 3pm, AMS 405 Students will learn basic concepts of Computer Science. Coding is an essential language that can be learned from the elementary level. This class will focus on coding through programming logic, sequencing commands, and identifying patterns. Students will learn to use programming skills to solve puzzles, create art, and build a game. Instructor: Ms. Jacob Ms. Jacob’s educational background consists of a Masters in Educational Administration, a Masters in Elementary Education, and a Bachelors in Mathematics. She has also gained a great deal of knowledge and experience through a number of amazing opportunities in volunteering overseas. Being a full-time 4th grade teacher and part-time adjunct professor, Ms. Jacob is continually finding ways to incorporate technology into her classroom, making learning interactive and engaging for all students. They will shoot, create, edit, and share movies as well as add graphics, transitions, and voice overs. Students should bring an iPad if they have one. Instructor: Ms. Cuevas Ms. Cuevas is an English and special education teacher at WHS. She is also an Apple Foundations Trainer for the Woodbridge Township School District.
