Language I Courses

• Introduction to the world language that will enable the acquisition of basic skills in listening, reading, writing, and speaking

• Homework activities include: studying vocabulary, conjugating verbs, completing textbook or workbook activities, completing written projects, and oral presentations

Language II Courses

• Continuation of the skills and goals of language I

• Additional activities are used to refine and hone the student’s ability in writing, reading, and speaking skills of the target language

Language III Courses

• Continuation of learning a world language in meaningful and authentic real-life situations to develop communicative proficiency

• Involves more comprehension and studying

Language IV Courses

• Emphasizes the reading and discussion in the target language of classical and modern literacy selections and a comprehensive grammar review

• Students will write extensively in the target language including: journal entries, critiques, research topics, newspaper entries, PowerPoint and other types of class presentations

Spanish for Heritage Speakers

• Requirements: Oral proficiency in Spanish

• Designed for heritage Spanish speakers who are fluent in oral Spanish, but vary greatly in their level of literacy skills

• Students will hone their literacy skills through grammar instruction, persuasive, narrative, and non-fiction writing, and readings

Spanish for Native Speakers

• Requirements: Students must be able to speak, understand, read, and write in Spanish

• Students will read and respond to a variety of Spanish texts in order to develop and continue their native language literacy skills

Honors Foreign Language

ClassesRequirements: A in regular academic foreign language

class and teacher recommendation

•The intensive coursework includes the basic format covered in the academic language classes (level II, III, or IV) with additional

presentations, readings, and group work

•Students must complete a summer assignment

Requirements: Successful completion of Spanish IV, Spanish IV Honors, Spanish for Native Speakers 2, or Spanish for Heritage

•Comparable to an advanced level (5th and 6th semester or equivalent) college level Spanish language course

•College credit may be earned by passing the ETS Advanced Placement exam

ESL Beginning Reading & Writing

• Requirements: Level 1 score on LAS (language assessment scales) reading & writing test and level 1 score on LAS oral test; limited to no English reading, writing, listening or speaking skills

• Introduction to basic English covering simple reading selections, a variety of writing exercises, oral practice

• Course satisfies the English requirement

• Requirements: Overall score of a 1 or 2 on LAS Links Form C (annual language assessment scales)

• Content area classes co-taught with ESL teacher or supported by bilingual paraprofessional

• Content area teachers have received specialized training to instruct ELLs (English Language Learners) incorporating effective teaching strategies

• Courses taken in conjunction with ESL classes
