COURSE PLANNING GUIDE

NEWLY ADMITTED HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

FALL 2019

This booklet is to help guide you in your course planning for the first term of study within the BBA degree at SFU’s Beedie School of Business. Included are 5 sample* course plans.

There are 4 sample course plans for Burnaby and 1 for Surrey. Each plan includes courses, tutorials, and exam schedules; also any mandatory required or elective courses (see legend below). For changes to a plan, come speak to a Beedie Academic Advisor to further customize your first term.

* Please note this is a sample course plan for Fall 2019 for newly admitted high school students and courses and final exams are subject to change without notice. Please refer to your Student Services Centre and MySchedule for up to date course offering information and exam times. It is also recommended that students plan for 2-3 alternate tutorials to ensure enrollment into the course.

** Students are required to attend the BUS 201 Case Competition Event on Saturday, November 23rd.

Advanced Placement, athletes, International Baccalaureate, scholarship, and international students should consult with an Academic Advisor prior to course selection.

COURSE PLANNINGCHECKLIST

☐ Pick your preferred course schedule

☐ Review BBA degree requirements

☐ Review course pre-requisites & outlines

☐ Reflect on your academic strengths and interests when picking classes

☐ Spread classes over the entire week

☐ Manage your time - add commitments inside and outside of school to your schedule including:

- Class time- Study time (see study formula below)- Commute times between classes & campuses- Outside commitments (work, extracurriculars etc) - Rest & Fun

☐ Final exams - Allow for as much study time between final exams as possible

STUDY FORMULASuccessful students dedicate 2-3 hours per unit, per week to study outside of class (4 hours/unit/week for Math courses) right from week 1. This includes time spent on anything you work on in the course (e.g. reading, reviewing, preparing for an exam, working on an assignment, writing a paper, etc), but does NOT include time spent in lectures, tutorials, or labs.

For example, a 3 unit course requires 6-9 hours of study + 3 hours of class = 9-12 hours per week. X (2 - 3)

HOURS PER WEEK1 UNIT
