1. Present the course, how it’s organized and what is expected from students. 2. Comment the forthcoming lessons and their themes. 3. Hand out the material that will be used. 4. Present the two authors that will be discussed in the first day and talk about their importance to literature in the world. Bring some literature theory books just to introduce them to the idea of a formal study of literature. 5. Show them some movie segments as to engage them in the idea of rhyme and flow of a Shakespearean sonnet. 6. Ask them to read Sonnet 18 and check in pairs if they understand the general context of the poem. 7. Check vocabulary with the whole group. 8. Change the pairs and ask them to try to re-read the poem now that they know what some of the difficult vocabulary is and how it changes their initial idea of the sonnet. 9. Explore the theme of the poem (love) and ask them for insights on how important it is. Explore the comparison between love and a summer’s day and the outcome of the comparison. Does he think his beloved is more or less important than a summer’s day? 10. Show them a movie segment of the poem being read to familiarize them with the sound of the spoken melody. 11. Change now the poem and ask them to read in the same pairs as they were, the poem Death be not proud. 12. Ask them to underline the word they are not acquainted with and in their pairs to try to analyse the poem together. 13. Once they’ve done that go through the vocabulary and ask them to form new pairs and discuss with each other the meaning once they know what the words mean. 14. Explore the themes of the poem and compare with the sonnet, give them information about the author and explore the variation of ideas between the two writers.
