Course Title: Integrated Project in Vertical Markets CENTENNIAL COLLEGE Course Code: NET-421 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course allows the students to synthesize the various skills learned in the program. Students will develop and/or implement a networking or systems design project that meets stated business objectives for an organization in a specific vertical market such as: health services, insurance, real estate, banking, heavy manufacturing, retail, transportation, and government. Each team will draw on their knowledge of traditional and emerging technologies as applied and researched in previous courses. To this end, each learner, in a team context, will be required to develop and apply the criteria that will enable the selection of an optimal project from those available. The scope of the project is substantive and will include a solution architecture; under risk analysis, identify analyze and propose, alternative solutions; produce the work products in accordance with the project management plan and scope; appropriate user and technical documentation to support successful Implementation. Each team will submit reports to the client concluding with a final report and multi-media presentation. COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

1. Given an interest in a specific industry, position and work environment, develop and apply the criteria that will enable the selection of an optimal project from those available.

2. Given various approaches to the solution of a problem, identify analyze and propose alternative solutions. 3. Given a work group and a need for teamwork, apply appropriate communication and management

techniques and practices to ensure effective and efficient team dynamics. 4. Given an approach to solving the problem that has been agreed to by the team, the client and the advisor,

develop a plan to solve the problem. 5. Given an implementation plan, manage the implementation process and make modifications as appropriate. 6. Given a solution implementation, produce the work products in accordance with the project plan and scope. 7. Given a solution implementation, produce the written documentation required by the client to successfully

use the work products to solve the problem. 8. Present the final report and presentation to the client. ESSENTIAL EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS (EES): This course supports the students’ ability to:

Communicate clearly, concisely and correctly in the written, spoken, and visual form that fulfills the purpose and meets the needs of the audience.

Course Title: Integrated Project in Vertical Markets CENTENNIAL COLLEGE Course Code: NET-421 3. Each Project Team must have a Team Leader identified. The Team Leader will be the overall coordinator

of the Team and the Team's Project.

4. Teams will be expected to manage themselves. This includes division of labor and any issues that may arise among Team Members.

5. The Faculty Advisor reserves the right to assign members to Teams.

The Project: 1. The Project must have a scope and objective(s).

2. The Project must have the work product(s) clearly defined.

3. The Project must have a beginning and ending date clearly defined.

4. The Project must be feasible given the limits of the term (14 weeks) and should be planned for completion

by the end of Week 12.

5. The Project must be approved by the Faculty Advisor. Project Deliverables and Weekly Reports- (for details see Project Deliverables below): 1. Certain “project deliverables” are required to be submitted to the Faculty Advisor at specific times

throughout the course. 2. The project deliverables that are due at a specific time must be submitted as a team. The project

deliverables will be either stapled together or included in a folder. 3. Each project deliverable will contain the following information:

- The Name of the Client - The Name of the Client Representative - The Name of the Project - The Name of the Project Team - The Date that the deliverable was prepared a. The following project deliverables require the signatures of all Team Members: - Letter of Engagement – if applicable - Weekly Project Status Reports - Final Project Status Report - Syllabus Agreement b. The following project deliverable requires the signatures of all Team Members and the Faculty Advisor: - Letter of Intent – if applicable c. The following project deliverable requires the signatures of all Team Members, the Client and the Faculty Advisor: - Change Control Forms – if needed

4. Unless otherwise noted, communication between the Project Team and the Faculty Advisor will be done through the Project Team Leader.

Attendance and Time Requirements: 1. You can expect to spend 10 to 15 hours per week on your Project.

2. Project Teams will plan, schedule and attend their own individual Project Team meetings. These meetings

should be scheduled for no less than once per week and should be scheduled for the convenience of all

team members.

3. You will be required to participate in the Final Project Walkthrough for your project. These walkthroughs will take place during Weeks 15. Appropriate information about the Project Walkthroughs will be duly communicated via emails when the Walkthrough Schedules have been determined.

You will also be required to attend ALL Final Project Walkthroughs.

Project Deliverables

Schedule • work must be completed by the end of week 14

Project Management Plan • Deliver a baseline plan by week 2 that reflects completion of the remaining deliverables by the end of

week 15. • Components that must be in the plan are.

o Gantt Chart o WBS o Human and Physical Resources Budget o Risk Analysis

Solution Architecture • Based on the scenario and requirements, design and construct a suitable test bed that will exercise and

test the proposed solution. o Conceptual Design o High Level Design o Detailed Design o Construction of Test Network

Test Plan • Set of applicable Test Cases and pass/fail criteria

Documentation (both hardcopy and electronic) • PMP and minutes of meetings • Test Plan • Design Docs • User’s Manual • Test Results • Configuration Files • Project Post Mortem Report

Presentation • Presentation/ Final Project Walkthrough in week 15 to the CIO’s team, of the project overview, and test

results.

Student Responsibilities Students are expected to know the contents of the course outline and to discuss with the professor any areas where clarification is required. Students should keep all course outlines for each course taken at Centennial College. These may be used to apply for transfer of credit to other educational institutions. The Academic Appeal Application form is available from any Enrolment Services Office. Proof of Student Status Students must produce official photo identification at any time during the semester when requested to do so by any professor. (The official piece is the Centennial Student Card.) Continuing Education students do not have Centennial Student Cards, and so they may use other forms of photo identification, such as a driver’s license, health card, or other government-issued photo identification. Final Examinations When writing a test or examination, students must put their official photo-ID cards in full view for review by the invigilator. Students who do not have official photo-ID will be permitted to write the examination with a substitute photo-ID, but they will be required to produce photo-ID at the program or department office within 24 hours or the next business day following the examination, or else the examination results will be void. More Final Examination Policies are available at http://my.centennialcollege.ca. Academic Progression Policy for Diploma and Certificate Programs: College Academic Standings will be applied. Faculty Consultation Professors are available to see students outside of class time. Students can contact professors via voice mail, email, or through their program or department office. Information regarding how to contact teachers will be provided at the beginning of the course and is also available in the program or department office.
