Programme* Requirements

1. Maternal and Neonatal Health

• Epidemiology and determinants of maternal morbidity and mortality.

• Causes of maternal mortality.

• Control of malaria in pregnancy: strategies, limiting factors and challenges.

• Epidemiology and determinants of perinatal and neonatal morbidity and mortality.

2. Sexual and Reproductive Health

• Sexually transmitted infections: Prevention and management.

• HIV infection and pregnancy. Prevention of vertical transmission.

• Obstetric complications. Post-partum haemorrhage.

• Unwanted pregnancy. Unsafe abortions.

3. Development and evaluation of intervention programmes to improve maternal and repro-ductive health

• The role of health systems in the improve-ment of maternal and reproductive health. Quality of healthcare.

• How to plan, organise, monitor and evaluate maternal and reproductive health program-mes and services: The example of family plan-ning programmes in low income countries.

• Development of a strategic plan for the re-duction of maternal and neonatal mortality.

4. Health, gender and development

• Health policy for women: Maternal, sexual and reproductive health: The role of official organisms and donors.

• More than half of the world. R & D in mater-nal health as a tool for development cooperation.

• Violence against women.

Candidates should have demonstrated interest in global health and/or maternal and reproductive health studies and an undergraduate degree in a related field. As this course is taught in both English and Spanish, students should have an advanced level of both languages.

AssessmentStudents will be evaluated based on*:

• A 30-minute multiple choice examination (40% of final grade)• Active participation and contribution during class (60% of final grade)

Students who successfully finish the course receive a certificate of completion.
