Over 30 million Americans over the age of 60 years have osteoarthritis and the point prevalence of back pain is over 10%. Therefore knowledge of evidence-based approaches to treatment is important for internists and rheumatologists. Similarly, hip and knee surgeries are being performed at much higher rates than in the past for osteoarthritis and it is estimated that surgery rates will increase two to fourfold within 2 decades. Therefore, it is important to identify the appropriate patients for joint replacement surgery, the expected long-term outcomes and the early and late complications. Gout has dramatically increased in incidence and is the most common inflammatory joint disease, with less than optimal management. New therapies for acute gouty arthritis and for chronic hyperuricemic gout make an evidence-based approach ideal. Major advances have occurred in our knowledge of the pathophysiology of rheumatic diseases and these have resulted in newer diagnostic techniques, including musculoskeletal ultrasound, and exciting new treatments, including biologic therapies for systemic autoimmune and inflammatory disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus and psoriatic arthritis. This timely one-day conference is intended to provide new evidence-based strategies for the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment, including many newly approved biologic therapies and surgery of common arthritic, rheumatic and autoimmune diseases. Local experts and renowned invited speakers, nationally known for their clinical and clinical research achievements, will provide state of the art summaries. In addition to lectures with questions and discussion, there will be case presentations with an audience response system to enhance the learning experience.

Course Description

Osteoarthritis and back pain are the most common causes of musculoskeletal disability in society and have greatly increased in frequency with our aging and overweight population.
