Employability in the Curriculum

The course is vocational and a requirement for progression to registration as an Environmental HealthPractitioner. The course provides a curriculum experience that will provide a foundation for EHPqualification, upon which students may develop their Experiential Learning Portfolio and professionalexaminations for the CIEH. Graduates will be able to follow the route to registration as EHPs or progress tofurther postgraduate academic study. Career opportunities for EHPs exist within Local Authorities inenforcement roles in generic and specialist areas of Environmental Health. EHPs are also employed withinother sectors for example by major retailers, consultancy groups, travel companies and the armed forces.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

A wide variety of learning activities are provided throughout the course including lectures, tutorials, workshops, laboratory practical work, fieldwork, field visits, case studies, project work, problem basedlearning, on-line exercises, computer workshops, structured laboratory classes, group work, an individualresearch project, and the promotion of reflective/ self managed learning

The three graduate attributes are embedded throughout the course at all levels, with examples below;

Digital literacy skills are developed at level 4 through the Personal and Professional Skills module that coversuse of spreadsheets, data management, on-line exercises, data analysis and interpretation and the use of e-portfolio through CANVAS and Pebblepad. Other modules that extend digital literacy skills include 4HW003through webquests and on-line collaboration via CANVAS and wikis. Subject specific systems such asGeographical Information Systems (GIS) are integrated into 5EH002 Analytical and Field Skills.

Knowledgeable and enterprising The course is designed to develop knowledge and skills at level 4 and 5,whilst engendering enquiring and reflective practice so that by level 6 students can apply the holisticapproach to environmental health required of Environmental Health Practitioners.

Support with your studies

University Learning Centres are the key source of academic information for students providing access to:

Physical library resources (books, journal, DVDs etc.)Study areas to allow students to study in the environment that suits them best: Social areas, quiet andsilent areas.A wide range of online information sources, including eBooks, e-journals and subject databasesAcademic skills support via the Skills for Learning programmeStudents on campus can attend workshops or ask for one-to-one help on a range of skills such asacademic writing and referencing.Dedicated Subject Pages to enable you to explore key online information sources that are recommendedfor their studies.Physical access to local libraries both in UK and overseas via SCONUL and WorldCat agreements

We also strongly advise you to download to “MyWLV” student app. MyWLV is a single point of personalisedaccess to the variety of systems the University offers. This includes pulling through relevant information (e.g.deadlines, timetables) and linking to underlying systems.

Course Specific Support

Academic study skills and digital literacy skills are introduced at level 4 in Personal and Professional skills(4EH004), further developed within Analytical and Fieldwork Skills (5EH002) at Level 5, and applied in theResearch Project (6EH004) and practice based modules (6EH001 and 6EH003) at Level 6.

Although the course is managed by the Faculty of Science and Engineering, the Course Management Teaminvolving academic colleagues from the Faculty of Education Health and Wellbeing meet at least monthly toensure cohesiveness of the student experience.

FSE has well developed support systems through the School Student Support Office, demonstrators PersonalTutors, IT support and technical support.

Contact Hours

In higher education, the term ‘contact hours’ is used very broadly, to refer to the amount of time that youspend learning in contact with teaching or associated staff, when studying for a particular course.

This time provides you with the support in developing your subject knowledge and skills, and opportunitiesto develop and reflect on your own, independent learning. Contact time can take a wide variety of forms

Page 11: Course Guide BSc(Hons) Environmental Health School of Architecture and Built Environment · 2017-08-08 · School of Architecture and Built Environment BSc(Hons) Environmental Health

depending on your subject, as well as where and how you are studying. Some of the most common examplesare:

lecturesseminarstutorialsproject supervisionsdemonstrationspractical classes and workshopssupervised time in a studio/workshopfieldworkexternal visitswork-based learning (including placements)scheduled virtual interaction with tutor such as on line, skype, telephone

In UK higher education, you as the student take primary responsibility for your own learning. In this context, contact time with teaching and associated staff is there to help shape and guide your studies. It may be usedto introduce new ideas and equip you with certain knowledge or skills, demonstrate practical skills for you topractise independently, offer guidance on project work, or to provide personalised feedback.

Alongside contact time, private or independent study is therefore very significant. This is the time that youspend learning without direct supervision from, or contact with, a member of staff. It might includebackground reading, preparation for seminars or tutorials, follow-up work, wider practice, the completion ofassignments, revision, and so on.

Course Specific Health and Safety Issues

All students in the faculty of Science and Engineering are required to take and pass their Schools Health andSafety Assessment. All assessments are available on this web site FSE Welcome Web Site and you will onlybe allowed to carry out any practical work once you have passed the relevant assessments. All assessmentsshould be completed as before teaching commences.

Permission to enter a workshop and use the facilities must be obtained from the person in charge. Thisperson is responsible for ensuring that the required safety equipment is available, and that anyone grantedpermission to use the facilities is conversant with the safe operation of the equipment, machinery and awareof any special hazards

The assessments are live from the 12th September and can be accessed from this link School of Architectureand Built Environment
