Is capable of making national, regional and locally content available, from providers such as e-Learning for Healthcare, NHS Connecting for Health and the NHS Core Learning Unit, as well as local NHS organisations’ e-learning content.

Is provided free of charge across the NHS in England (Wales is currently not within the NLMS scope).

Course Title: 000 e-ELCA : E-learning in End of Life Care for health & social care staff Description The e-ELCA e-learning package (End of Life Care for All) was commissioned by the Department of Health

(DOH) and developed by e-learning for Healthcare (e-LfH) and the Association for Palliative Medicine (APM). It is intended that the package offers wide and flexible access for staff, whilst blending and supporting other programmes of learning around end of life care.

There are approximately 156 e-learning sessions in total that are grouped as 5 individual courses

The courses cover the 4 key competency areas from the Common Core Competencies for End of Life Care 2009 (Assessment & Care Planning, Symptom Control, Communication and Advanced Care Planning). A fifth course offers sessions which integrate learning through case studies and additional specific sessions on topics such as spirituality and bereavement.

Staff are able to select which course & sessions they wish to complete dependant on their role and learning needs.

Guidance in relation to appropriateness of sessions, and a suggested curriculum workbook can be accessed via the Pennine Acute Intranet Homepage → Palliative & EOL Care Website.(e-ELCA for secondary care using NMLS & curriculum work book for ELCA)

Certificates of completion are automatically generated at the end of each e-ELCA module, Quality of the e-ELCA is assured as the sessions have been written and peer reviewed by clinicians working in palliative and end of life care. Students need to note that there is some local variance in relation to content given, however the principles of good practice will be the same. It is therefore recommended that students incorporate local guidance such as the North East Sector of Greater Manchester & Cheshire Cancer Network Pain & Symptom Control Guidelines & the LCP Prescribing Guidance (version12)

The Pennine Acute e-ELCA pilot study demonstrated that e-ELCA is an appropriate method to provide learning. It offers a flexible approach to learning in its ability to be used by both individuals and groups.

Intended Audience

All staff who’s role involves caring for patients with end of life care needs In particular: RNs, Support Workers, Allied Health Professionals, Social Care Staff

Keywords End of Life Care, Palliative care, Assessment & Care Planning, Symptom Management, Communication Skills, Advance Care Planning

Objectives To enable staff to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes to initiate and deliver high quality end of life care, or where appropriate to seek advice and guidance from other colleagues Staff to be able to demonstrate the necessary skills and competence dependant on their role in relation to the Common Core Competencies for End of Life Care (2009), supporting the National End Of Life Care Strategy (2008)

Being Open

Description In 2005, the National Reporting Learning Service (NRLS) issued guidance on communicating effectively with patients when things go wrong. Following changes to the NHS since the launch, the NRLS has reviewed the guidance and developed a new Being open framework and alert. This guidance and the associated actions outlined in the Alert, provide reassurance that Being open is the right thing to do, and encourage NHS boards to make a public commitment to openness, honesty and transparency.

Intended Audience

The new framework is a best practice guide for all healthcare staff, including boards, clinicians and PALS.

Objectives It explains the principles behind Being open and outlines how to communicate with patients, their families and carers following harm. Open and honest communication with patients is at the heart of health care. Research has shown that being open when things go wrong can help patients and staff to cope better with the after effects of a patient safety incident. Healthcare staff may be fearful of upsetting the patient, saying the wrong or admitting liability.

Assessment Method

Multiple choice questions throughout the programme. No formal assessment at the end.
