INTRODUCTIONCumberland Family Academy provides FREE workshops and educational

events for CCS families. From research, we understand that students

achieve more when families are involved in their education. When

families have high expectations for children and encourage them to work

hard, they support and promote a child’s academic, social and emotional

well-being. The purpose of the Family Academy program is to provide

families with the necessary academic tools to support the success of their

child’s education and to bring schools, parents/guardians, families, and

community organizations together as equal partners.

Parent Café: Parents Supporting Parents Session Date: Thursday, September 9, 2021Target Audience: All Families

Parent Cafés are physically and emotionally safe spaces where parents can talk about the victories

and challenges of raising a family. Conversations are based upon the five protective factors that help

strengthen families: (1) parental resilience; (2) social connections; (3) knowledge of parenting and

child development; (4) concrete support in times of need; and (5) social and emotional competence

of children. Parent Cafés are designed to engage parents in meaningful conversations that affirm

parents as leaders. The Intro to the Parent Café provides an overview of the Be Strong Families Parent

Café process, examples of discussion topics that empower parents to strengthen their families, and

information on how to join or host a Parent Café.

Motivating the Unmotivated Child Session Date: Thursday, September 16, 2021Target Audience: 6th-12th Grade Families

Studies have shown that by the 3rd grade, students have already decided whether they are going to

complete high school or not. Sadly, the dropout rate for students is increasing; therefore, many students

are deciding early that they have no desire to finish high school. A big contributor to this is a lack of

motivation. We, as parents and educators, can work together to help motivate our students . In this

workshop, we will discuss ways parents can help motivate their student(s) and the importance of a

parent/educator relationship in this process.

Academic Success: Supporting the Learning Needs of Kindergarteners Session Date: Tuesday, September 28, 2021Target Audience: Kindergarten Families

We know that learning is best supported when teachers and families work together. This session

provides an overview of the NC Early Learning Inventory (NC ELI) and describes ways that families

can be involved. As an observation-based formative assessment, the NC ELI is administered by

Kindergarten teachers during the first 60 days of school to create a snapshot of each child’s early

learning development in key areas. The information collected gives teachers and families an ongoing

understanding of the strengths and needs of each child. Teachers use this understanding to meet

specific learning needs. Participants will leave the session with an understanding of the process as well

as family activities that can support their child’s progress.

COVID-19 taught us anything, it’s that learning occurs not only within the walls of our school buildings,

but it happens at home as well. You do not need a teaching degree, special materials or tools to foster

your child’s natural mathematical curiosity. In this session, we will explore fun and engaging methods,

strategies, and materials that parents, guardians and family members of elementary-aged students can
