The National Hockey League season re- mains in doubt as the owners and players union are unable to reach a compromise agreement. But that doesn’t mean you can’t see some of the league’s best players in action. All-Stars Brad Richards and Scott Hartnell — who plays right wing for the Flyers — in partnership with Caesars Atlantic City, will present “Operation Hat Trick,” a charity hock- ey game Saturday night at Boardwalk Hall. All proceeds from the event will go directly to the Empire State Relief Fund, the New Jer- sey Hurricane Relief Fund and the American Red Cross, aiding New York and New Jersey families affected by Hurricane Sandy. Richards and Hartnell will each captain a team that includes several of their pro league- mates as well as legends from the hockey world. Other players and supporters include: Flyers Wayne Simmonds and Kimmo Timonen, Bobby Ryan, Braydon Coburn, James van Riemsdyk, Simon Gagne, Ville Leino, Daniel Carcillo, Steve Eminger, Jeff Halpern, Brian Boyle, Jody Shelley, John Carlson, Taylor Pyatt, Steve Downie, James Neal, Henrik Lundqvist, Steven Stamkos, Daniel Alfreds- son, Corey Perry, Marc Staal, P.K. Subban, Jus- tin Williams, Andy Greene, David Clarkson, Dan Girardi, Matt Martin and Martin Brodeur. “A roster of this magnitude reads as though Atlantic City is hosting the American and Inter- national All-Star hockey game of the year, all to benefit those in our region affected by Hurri- cane Sandy,” said Don Marrandino, Eastern Di- vision president for Caesars Entertainment. “I applaud the efforts of difference-makers like Richards and Hartnell, and the rest of these hockey-world superstars, as well as our phe- nomenal partners like the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority, Board- walk Hall and Reebok.” Hartnell explained why he helped spearhead this game. “The lives that have been touched by the devastation are people in our own communities and the communities of our fans. To have the opportunity to be able to raise money for the relief effort by participating in this game is an honor and we are asking fans of the tri-state area to assist in any way they can to help the communities and people affected.” Richards was amazed by the damage and de- struction caused to this region by the storm. “While we know the road to recovery is long, we hope a hockey game featuring some of the top players in our sport will help rally additional support for the three great organizations that are committed to helping rebuild our area.” The game also places a national spotlight on Atlantic City itself, Marrandino said. “A key tactic in the strategy of revitalizing Atlantic City is offering events such as this at a time when it is most needed. We as a business com- munity benefit from the thousands of fans who will choose to visit our destination during that weekend and we look forward to a great event,” he said. This past summer, Maxwell had designs todo six concerts in Los Angeles, Atlanta andNewark. Unfortunately, he had to cancel themini tour in which he planned to perform hisentire catalogue.

“After many months of recording I’ve tem-porarily damaged my voice,” Maxwell said inthe statement on his website. “I’ve had issuesbeforeduringother toursbutwasable topowerthrough.”

Butwith confidence that theworst of the in-jury is behind him,Maxwell is stepping out fortwoconcerts thisweekend,beginningatBor-gata Hotel Casino & Spa. He plays MGMGrand at Foxwoods on Saturday night in aprecursor for the World Winter Warm Up.

TheR&Bvocalistwill likely sing thebet-ter known hits of his prior five albums, in-cluding “Sumthin’ Sumthin’,” “Lifetime,”the ethereal cover of Kate Bush’s “ThisWoman’s Work,” and “Pretty Wings,” theinitial single from 2009’s “BLACKsum-mers’night,” the first of a trilogy of al-bums.

Expect Maxwell to preview some ofthe songs on the next part of the trilogy,“BlackSUMMERS’night,” billed as adarker but soulful compilation. “SUM-MERS” leansmoreGospel and the thirdleg, “Blacksummers’NIGHT” will be acool collection of slow jams.

He hopes to mount a full-fledgedtour upon the release of his new albumlater this year.

“Sometimes I can’t believe I do thisbecause you’re living your life,” theBrooklyn-born singer said on his website.“Going to the corner store, taking out thegarbage and the next thing you know you’reon stage at Radio City Music Hall. It’s such ahumbling thing and you’d think it would makemy ego go out of control, but I feel humility.”

With no end in sight to the NHL lock-out, what’s a hockey fan to do?

Go to Atlantic City Sunday and watchtwo top farm teamsbattle it out on the iceat Boardwalk Hall. The Albany Devils —the New Jersey Devils affiliate to theAmerican Hockey League—will take onthe Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins inthe first of four Devils games scheduledat the historic arena during the 2012-13season.

Sponsored by the Atlantic City Con-vention&Visitors Authority andCaesarsAtlantic City, the series resumes in 2013with a games, on Jan. 13, when the Devilshost the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Aweek later on Jan. 20, theDevils return toface off against the Flyers AHL repre-sentative, theAdirondack Phantoms, andthen close out the Atlantic City matcheson Feb. 24 against theHersheyBears. Allfour of the gameswill be held at 4 p.m. onSundays.

“Partnerships and events of this mag-nitudearewhat continue tohelpgrowourmarket and position Atlantic City as theEast Coast’s top entertainment destina-tion,” said Don Marrandino, Eastern Di-vision president for Caesars Entertain-ment. “The 2012-13 regular season gameswith theAlbanyDevilsatBoardwalkHallwill shine the national spotlight on Atlan-tic City, allowing the community to show-case what a diverse entertainment desti-nation we are.”

Not only does it quench the thirst ofhockey fans, but the games include someNHL stars playing until the lockout ends.

“This league has three or four guys on

each teamwhowouldbe in theNHLnow,”said Jay Leach, a player with the AlbanyDevils. The lockout does not affect theAHL because it has a separate collectivebargaining agreement in place for its 76-game season.

For the Devils, the A-list includesAdam Henry, Adam Larsson and JacobJosefson. “We have a better team withthoseguysplaying.Theybringupthe lev-el of play. That’s the case throughout theleague,” said Leach, who has skated forfive NHL teams in 12 seasons.

Originally drafted by the PhoenixCoyotes, Leach said playingAtlantic Cityis a positive for the resort and the league.“We think it’s good for our fan base. Wehope we get a few fans there,” he said byphone.

“We added the jukebox so our guestscan play their favorite song,” saidHowardWeiss, regional director of nightlife opera-tions, strategy and development, EasternDivision of Caesars Entertainment. Thejukebox plays classic rock, rap, R&B,country, pop and dance music.

“The main reason for the adjustmentsis thatwewanted to freshen up the experi-ence at Eden Lounge,” Weiss said. “Mostlounges just program bands, but we want-ed to try something a little bit different. The jukebox experience is a test pilot forus to see how the customers like it.”

In addition, the lounge has added a fo-cus on service and a new specialty drinkmenu featuring vodka and other liquors. There’s also a new craft beer program.

The Eden Lounge has long been consid-ered one of the best casino lounges in At-lantic City, Weiss said. “Basically, we aremaking the Eden Lounge the best place tograb adrink either before or after dinner.”

The holiday season kicks off todayand with it comes entertainment thattaps into the seasonal spirit. The Abse-con Lighthouse once again hosts its an-nual Holiday Gathering on Dec. 8.

The event includes soda, cider, wine, beer, pizza from Tony Boloney’s andholiday cookies. And Holiday Cheer, aprofessional a cappella caroling group, will sing songs of the season inside thehistoric lighthouse. A tree will be lit.

The evening also offers one of thefew opportunities to climb the struc-ture’s 228 steps at night, said Jean Mu-chanic, executive director of AbseconLighthouse.

“The lighthouse is decorated includ-ing four massive lit wreaths at the top,so it’s a beautiful setting to get in theholiday mood,” Muchanic said.

Michael Flynn, director of HolidayCheer, says the group has a repertoireof holiday songs, from traditional car-ols such as “Deck the Halls” and “Ru-dolph” to more obscure ones that in-clude “Pat a Pan” and “ChristmasSong.”

“Lighthouse favorites tend to be‘Carol of theBells’ and ‘LittleDrummerBoy,’” Flynn said.

Thegroupmight throw in anEnglishcarol as well as a Hanukkah song.

“When I first started working at theLighthouse in 2005, it turned out thateveryone on staff was either in a choir,

or loved to sing,” Muchanic said. “Withsuch a merry and melodious staff, itwas a natural to plan an eventwherewecould all sing along to our favorite holi-day tunes. It really is a nice tradition, and always attracts a good crowd. Off-key singers are welcome too — justcome and have fun with us.”
